Welcome to my.JournalStar.com!
Posted by: Victoria Ayotte Brown, interactivity editor on July 19, 2009 at 8:22PM CST

The Journal Star has recognized the need for more robust interactivity on our site. As such, we are launching more interactivity options.

This includes forums in which you can start your own discussion threads as well as groups and real-time story commenting (you no longer will need to wait for me and my ilk to moderate posts). You also could create profiles, create your own blog or submit pictures. We are not totally abandoning moderation; each post will have a link to "report problem," and we will review the problem reports and remove those that don't meet our Terms and Standards as soon as time allows. This would function for story comments and forums much the way our blogs do now.

We hope that responsible commenters will lead the way for others by starting discussions and participating in the community early. It always takes a few early comers to get the party started. Once we reach a critical mass, the real fun will begin.

As well as being fun, our goal is to make my.JournalStar.com a civil and safe place for advancing public discourse. We hope you enjoy it and look forward to getting your feedback as you explore my.journalstar.com.

VAB - have you considered having User Moderators? Lots of forums do this.

Posted by: Victoria Ayotte Brown, interactivity editor on April 15, 2009 2:08PM CST
We definitely are thinking of having user moderators. That would develop after we get the communities going and leaders in various forums emerge. Thanks for checking it out! Hopefully we'll get more people on here.

Hmmm. Moderator. Mwahahahaha!

Posted by: knapplc on April 15, 2009 2:20PM CST
I think you should pick mods from a pool of users who are able to figure out how to use the image upload feature. Anyone sporting, say, a sower as an avatar should be discounted immediately. It's the only way to be fair.

I'll .... ummm .... consider that advice!

Brown noser.

I just haven't changed my avatar yet, because I haven't decided yet what sort of awesomeness to unleash.

VAB..

Is there a specific place you guys are looking to receive feedback? Say for broken links, bugs, and the like?

Posted by: knapplc on April 15, 2009 3:14PM CST
I tried a few things, but the image gets squashed and distorted. This was the best-looking of the bunch. Can't go wrong with the Tolkien symbol.

Yes, you can send it to webmaster@journalstar.com. I know they're getting a good list going! Thanks so much for checking it out as we work out the bugs.

VAB - do you anticipate eliminating that "security code" thing you have to type in any time soon? It's a bear.

Posted by: Rygolf on April 16, 2009 12:18PM CST
Wow Knap, I nominate you for a moderator for sure...this thing is in its infant stages and you already have a million posts! :)

You mean the captcha? I will pass that concern along -- I know there's always a concern about spam.

Hello, is there anybody out there?

Posted by: Busiekcreek on April 16, 2009 2:56PM CST
Well, at least I got a post on here.

Has MyJournalStar officially launched now, or are we still in Beta?

Yep, we're up! I was out of the office; sorry it took so long to respond! I encourage all to begin threading the forums to get things going.

I've always been impressed with how the site improves its features. You know why? There's this one time that I needed a help about my research paper and one of our registered users opened the topic I needed. Such a coincidence right? That is why I became loyal with this site because the discussions are informative.
