A frank discussion on story comments
Posted by: Victoria Ayotte Brown, interactivity editor on January 27, 2010 at 12:46PM CST
I posted this note on the Journal Star Web site Wednesday, Jan. 27, in response to some worsening interactivity issues:

Some of you may have noticed you get "An error occurred" notice when trying to comment on the abortion bill story. The Journal Star closed the story to further commenting after the discussion got out of hand with a multitude of personal attacks.

Unfortunately, our software at this time still shows a comment box even though you cannot comment. We have asked that that be fixed, because we do not want you to be frustrated after typing in your comment on what is a big issue in Nebraska.

This situation highlights a problem we've had recently on a number of articles. Regular commenters are calling other regular commenters names and otherwise violating our Terms of Use posted just above the comment submission box.

The Journal Star cannot moderate the comments upfront, so we rely on our community of commenters to flag problem posts by pushing the Report Abuse button. This isn't happening quickly enough in many instances.

While we value all contributions, this community should not and cannot be a place in which only the thick-skinned can tolerate the possibility of abuse by other commenters. The Journal Star provides this forum for civil discussion, and we will take whatever steps we need to take to keep it that way.

In some cases, that will mean banning longtime members. In other cases, it will mean closing comments if the discussion is getting out of hand.

The Bloomington, Ill, Pantagraph recently took the step of a "cooling off" period in which no comments were enabled for a few days. Other papers have turned off comments altogether or only allowed them on a few articles per day.

We hope that here in Lincoln we can keep our community a safe place for all readers to contribute to the discussion.

This is spot on. I've noticed that certain posters can't seem to compose anything without using demeaning terms and names when talking about the opposition. My feelings are that it is childish and lowers the intellectual level into the gutter. Some posters seem to be well informed, while alot of them seem to just be repeating something they heard on the radio that is nothing but propaganda. There is one certain poster who's hatred for the president and anything liberal rises head and shoulders above anyone elses. Makes one wonder how mentally stable this poster is. Could they be the next to go a shooting spree?

How does a political opinion deteriote to a shooting spree? This is the type of comment that leads to the emotional words typed.I tend to be conservative and defend the 2nd Amendment fervently, why should I be accused of going off the deep end? Just an example of the error in thought processes of some people. They don't know,or care about how they accuse people of things because they might not agree

I agree that you should not be accused of going off the deep end; everyone's help is necessary in policing the community. Please report such comments via the Report Abuse button.

I just want to know why I cannot comment on any story, it says you must login to comment and I do login and it still says I must login first.

Yeah you must still have problems with people bashing on a lot of articles as I couldn't post comments on the story about the Tour de Lincoln bikes even though I'd very much like to talk to Bonnie about the other 11 bikes not posted that friends and I, like CannellFan, also haven't found yet.

Like TheBrain, I too am having difficulty in commenting. the old so-you-think-you-want-to-post-something gag (sorry Maxwell Smart).

Commenters: You should make sure that next to the JournalStar.com logo on the story page that it says "Logout" vs. "Login." If it says "Login" you are not logged in on the journalstar.com side and it will give you an error. Send me a message if that doesn't work ...
