Watson: QB competition intense
Posted by: Steve Sipple on August 10, 2010 at 7:41PM CST

As one would expect, the competition for Nebraska's starting quarterback job has been "very" competitive through four preseason practices, Husker offensive coordinator Shawn Watson said after Tuesday's workout.

"Everybody's fighting for reps out here, especially the last few days," he said. "It's been really competitive. The first couple days was getting their feet back underneath them, getting used to being coached, getting used to the tempo of practice. A 'coached' defensive look is a lot different than the look they go against in the summer.

"So they've had a little transition. The last couple days, they've been really sharp and it's been really competitive."

Senior Zac Lee started 12 games last season. He's now battling for the job with sophomore Cody Green (two starts in 2009) and redshirt freshman speedster Taylor Martinez.

Watson was asked if Lee, given his experience as starter last season, has taken on the role of leader.

"Right now, he's just being very quiet and is focused on the job he's got to do," Watson said. "I think the quarterback position is natural leadership. When you call the play in the huddle, you're directing the whole offense, and you're doing it at the line of scrimmage ... No matter who it is, there's a leadership role there."

Quoth DBP: "And the General shall lead them."

Posted by: BUCK4NU on August 10, 2010 7:46PM CST
Wow I truely thought Spano would be in the conversation, but I guess agter two blown knee's he just isn't up for it.

Posted by: big red 1 on August 10, 2010 8:03PM CST
Lee may start but he will not hold it. Green or Martinez will be in it thick or thin.Everything now is leading to a more run orientation and Lee is just a tad slow.

Posted by: Steve Sipple on August 10, 2010 8:06PM CST
BUCK4NU,

Spano is not on the 105-player roster for preseason drills. Still not fully recovered from knee issues, Pelini says.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on August 10, 2010 8:07PM CST
3 WR over 220 lbs....has NU ever had that before? Looks like the run game is coming back with a twist....big bodied receivers capable of fighting for a ball thrown somewhere in their vicinity.

Posted by: BUCK4NU on August 10, 2010 8:11PM CST
Thanks Sip. I really thought he would be in the battle. But having a bad knee myself I know how they can go.

Posted by: scrib on August 10, 2010 8:11PM CST
I think we should run a lot of wildcat with two qb's in there. We have the talent to run a lot of variations and keep the defense guessing. It is also a way to get more experience for the younger QB's. As for Spano, my son suffered an ACL tear while at NU and it took him 2 full years to get back his speed, stability, and confidence.

Posted by: Ray in Bellevue on August 10, 2010 8:15PM CST
Very competitive for the backup position. That's what Watson meant.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on August 10, 2010 8:21PM CST
I truly don't care who is behind center any more than I care who's running the ball, catching the ball, Blocking on the line, rushing the QB, tackling the opponent or breaking up the pass that would put that opponent ahead. All I really care about is that whomever is on that field is playing to the best of their ability and working hard to improve.

A usually reliable poster on another board indicates that Mike Smith is done for the year. Any truth to that rumor?

It is called

My daddy would only be 84. You are old as trash suggests.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on August 10, 2010 8:40PM CST
So I guess the horse is called Peso? Instead of Fred

Posted by: drivebyposter on August 10, 2010 8:40PM CST
Ray, you will have to ask lube. He is the disciplinarian round here.

Course trash has sent hsb2 to his room before.

Me? Corporal punishment rules.

New LITR buzzword: Old.

BR1

Good work. You do fit the buzzword, but are covering well for me while away......

Posted by: drivebyposter on August 10, 2010 8:44PM CST
Anyway, this qb deal is interesting and great. Course Green and Lee were in a "heavy competition last year as well."

Course Green is now a year older, but as Trash overlooks, so is the general.

I am hoping the General does great. And if not then play a qb who can play great.

Okay then, have you seen nono jogging while spying on the corn practices, and playing like niles and stopping at every tree?

His words not mine

Posted by: Ray in Bellevue on August 10, 2010 8:44PM CST
dbp. Whatever you do, please, not Trash! We will both behave, mother.

Posted by: drivebyposter on August 10, 2010 8:46PM CST
Actually low, Fred is his given name. How did you know?

Even stepn never would have gotten that, and he is a texas boy from phildelphia

As you can see Ray, you are too late.

the trashman cometh

Need Wats to coach up all 3 of the QB's and have them ready.

The Wiz predicts Zac will not make the whole year if NU continues to run the QB's like the Holiday Bowl.

Zac will be on a stretcher. Shifty, he is not. Takes brutal shots and has little ability to avoid the kill shot.

Who is #2 will make or break the season.

Wats, may I suggest you edit the yellow page play book edition, and have the Cody and Taylor just learn the execute the shortened version.

See OU, USC, or Baylor for how to play freshman QB and on how to work with underclassmen QB's.

Seems to work for them.

If and when Zac gets creamed, we need #2 to come in and win games.

HSB is grounded to his playroom, penalized to watch the USA/Brazil soccer match. He said he hates soccer and I believe him.

Plus I removed his window A/C in his treehouse.

Now he can just enjoy the Texas breeze and cool Texas nights.

Luckily he's not in the Nebraska heat or I would feel bad for him.

He has to comtemplate about other things besides golf.

This probably includes a lot of seclusion and thinking.

And no wife/ladies = tough times

Ask 007 how his golf game would be with no women in his life........

He would probably retire in Colorado to play "hundies golf" with DBP.

Evening boys. Competition is a good thing but you know how those coaches can be about their 'coach speak'. Ray's conspiracy is that no 'competition' exists, Wats only allows us to think that there is. Could Ray be right?

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on August 10, 2010 9:07PM CST
GBR))) I've got a 3A sleeper this year. Keep your eye on Wills Point.

Posted by: big red 1 on August 10, 2010 9:11PM CST
I have seen strange things in football GBR and I hope this is not the case. I think there is a fire under Watson to perform this yeas. We have very good talent and at least 2-3 deep in every position but after that is what worries me. Sounds like the people on 3-4 string are possibly not getting enough coaching. You were and are a coach so what do you think GBR ?

Posted by: big red 1 on August 10, 2010 9:12PM CST
years not yeas

Pretty much straight east.

Posted by: Trashman on August 10, 2010 9:23PM CST
GBR

Ray is always conspiring.

It is not coach-speak or a starter could of easily been named and told competition for the job will be going on until game week. Wouldn't kids work just as hard in that instance?

Well, only if they are 2+ years in the system minus lunar tides and leap years.

See how I "spun a Ray"?

Posted by: GBR in Texas on August 10, 2010 9:23PM CST
br1...I've got full confidence in Bo & Co. and their preparation methods. It's tough dividing up the reps for that many people but they impress me as being very efficient in their work habits.

Step...they've been pretty good if I remember correctly.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on August 10, 2010 9:26PM CST
They were good.... then went 1-9 and fired their coach.

New coach got them going quickly and they have quality coming back... including a solid if nto great QB. Not ranked tho. Therefore.... qualify as a 'sleeper'.

It's DEFINITELY football season. Driving around the Dallas area... nothing but shirts and yard signs claiming their team as the best. They are everywhere!

Posted by: GBR in Texas on August 10, 2010 9:27PM CST
Myself, I believe the competition to be genuine. I would love to be on the field to see it unfold, awesome stuff.

Problems...6 minutes of battery and no power chord equals bad combo. I guess I'll have to rejoin this conversation tomorrow. Night guys.

Posted by: big red 1 on August 10, 2010 9:31PM CST
Night GBR.

big red 1))) Whats you fav John Wayne film?

Posted by: PT Husker on August 10, 2010 9:35PM CST
Evening troops. The usual, "The coaches aren't telling us the truth" routine.

It won't hapen but If I were coach I might start Green for a series or two, Bring in Martinez for a while then let Lee finish. All in the first quarter. Next week I might switch it up a bit.

Maybe that would shut some folks up.

Actually, the coaches will make the right decision. and if it needs fixed they will do it in good time.

We want info, they give it to us, and we won't believe them.

Sheeez.

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on August 10, 2010 9:39PM CST
Looks like I will need to learn some coach speak to motivate my squad.
A strong group of starters return, but behind them, a whole lot of nothing, so they don't fear for their jobs...but they're good enough they think just by stepping on the field they'll win.

Much different than the Huskers' situation.

We can ask for no more.

John Wayne is my favorite USC football player.

That's all I'll say.

Posted by: TwinsRRus on August 10, 2010 9:55PM CST
So has someone said who the 105th player is? The one that was sick?

Posted by: 3&OUT on August 10, 2010 10:00PM CST
I am glad to see the linebacker corp. doing well. The QB's just need some reps with a defense in their face, especially Lee after he missed the spring. Wats is going to be fine with the improvements in the offensive line and some healthy QB's to run the offense.

oNe Nebraska, GBR!

I read that Sipple said Spano is not the 105th. Is Hicks still on the team or did he graduate?
I was thinking it might be Nick Ash. I thought he had a great redshirt year kast year from what I read of him and figured he would be in the top 105.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on August 10, 2010 10:14PM CST
Hicks graduated, Ash is not part of the 105 the same as Spano. Bo said Spano would start practicing on Aug 23.

Excellent early morning points NoNo.

Have a good run today.

Posted by: SuperHusker17 on August 11, 2010 8:25AM CST
Wizard, while I get the point you're trying to make, using teams that at best went 9-4 last year isn't the best analogy. USC was 9-4 but they were 5-4 in conference play and finished 5th in the Pac-10. OU went 8-5 but 5-3 in conference and finished 4th in the South. Baylor's stud obviously got hurt early but assuming their fill in QB's weren't all that experienced as well they still went 4-8, only 1-7 in conference play and dead last in the South. For NU having such a "problem" with Lee being our starter last year he still gave us 9 wins, not including the Baylor game where Green played the whole time.

Posted by: PT Husker on August 11, 2010 8:25AM CST
would we like it better if the coaches said these guys suck. Kind of like two years ago when they got here.

How about, "It does not matter how hard they are working becasue none of them are any good." Or, "We will be lucky to win 5 games this year."

And then there is always "Those other guys can work as hard as they want. We have picked our starters already.".

I could go on but I don't want to ruin my day this early.

Posted by: PT Husker on August 11, 2010 8:33AM CST
BTW, I do think Lee will start. It is not, however being given to him. He will earn it like everyone else.

Of all the positions available there might be 3 or 4 that are nails. Niles Paul, Alex Henery, Hagg, Allen, Crick, and maybe a couple others.

OK that might be 5 or 6 but it is not many out of 22.

And even those guys have players behind them that can and will step in for relief. And should the starter take a day off........ Well you get the point.

I would say that Prince and Dennard are "nails" as well. More so than Hagg and if Henery misses a few kicks even he could get pulled for Adi.
