Ward earns No. 3 RB spot
Posted by: Steve Sipple on September 2, 2009 at 6:43PM CST

Roy Helu Jr. and Rex Burkhead are Nebraska's top two running backs, hands down. We know that.

As for No. 3, running backs coach Tim Beck gives redshirt freshman Lester Ward a slight edge over sophomores Austin Jones and Marcus Mendoza.

"I think Lester's a little ahead," Beck said. "He's a little more consistent in his play."

"A lot of things will depend on the situation," Beck added. "Lester Ward and A.J. Jones are probably a little ahead of Marcus right now, just because there's still a couple things Marcus needs to do to detail up his game a little bit."

Mendoza spent the spring practicing at wideout before moving to RB on Aug. 21. "It's going to take him some time," Beck said.

Helu I hope stays healthy. I think he will probably get between 15 and 20 carries a game, Burkhead from five to 10. I have a hunch Ward is not going to see much playing time in the heat of the battle. We will be pretty much a two back system. We might see a fullback carry from time to time.

If your going to burn Rexs' reshirt, hope he gets plenty of carries to warrant it.

Yeah really, I'm surprised we've heard nothing about Collins.

Redrickman, I agree on Rex. He must be something else to burn it. I hope he is.

Well I've heard nothing but Rex is a pure talent, I think he would have gotten a few carries here and there even if Q was here but obviously we know what went down there. I figure at least we have someone like him there so our 1-2 punch that we had didn't just fall to a one hit wonder. Granted this is a level up and Rex is just a freshman but then again he was able to start as a freshman at Plano, that's gotta say something.
