Tweet troubles
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on February 21, 2012 at 9:07PM CST
Be careful what you tweet.

Many high-profile people have learned this this the hard way. Now you add former Husker assistant coach Jay Norvell to the list.

Oklahoma's co-offensive coordinator made a Twitter error that could draw the attention of the NCAA.

If nothing else, it will likely have Norvell changing his phone number.

According to The Oklahoma, six recruits received the following message from Norvell's Twitter account:

“This is Coach Jay Norvell from Oklahoma. Cel (405) 431-XXXX Would like to offer you a Full Scholarship to Oklahoma. Call me!”

There were a few other messages from Norvell's account to recruits. It seems Norvell thought the tweets were private, which they would have been had they been direct messages. They were not.

The tweets were deleted but not before a picture of them were screen-captured by SBNation, a college football blog.

The Oklahoman notes that there is the possibility of a secondary violation given that the tweets came during a "quiet" period.

We'll see. Probably not much will come out of this one except a wrist slap, embarrassment and a new cell phone number for Norvell.

Tweet, tweet, ...

Was it taking a calculated risk to impress recruits? Or was it just a bonehead move, not remembering to check the box to mark the messages as private?

Don't they have a tech guy on staff teaching them how the microwave oven and other handy gadgets work.

You shouldn't be tweeting if you never learned how to program a VCR.

Norvell rocks in the tree tops all day long
Hoppin' and a-boppin' and singing his song
All the little birdies on Sooner Street
Love to hear the Norvell go tweet tweet tweet

Sounds like somebody got caught skimming the rules about contacts during a "quiet period". Shows how much some schools respect the rules. What's the saying... If you ain't cheatin', you ain't trying?

Norvell should "try" by texting next time.

The coaches know the rules, they can't plead ignorance....gotta eliminate the slap on the wrist secondary violations. Make the recruits ineligible to go to the cheating school, and sit the coach down for a month or two from all recruiting.

joe t - I like the punishment. But, unfortunately it won't happen. The punishment seldom fits the crime.

Put me down under the list of people that doesnt believe for a second that this was any kind of account hacking, mistake,or ignorance of the rules,Norvell was trying to cheat, plain and simple.
