TO and Joe Pa together again; Delany talks title game, scheduling format
Posted by: Curt McKeever on August 2, 2010 at 3:26PM CST

After Jim Delany concluded Monday's Big Ten football media gathering with some insightful thoughts about where he sees the league headed, Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne made a well-timed stop to the stage (unquestionably all staged by the Big Ten Network) for a quick photo with the commissioner and Penn State coach Joe Paterno (who looks frail from a summer illness).

I plan to chat with Osborne after he gets out of meetings with Big Ten athletic directors, but he'll have a tough act following Delany.

About to start his 22nd year as Big Ten commish, Delany:

-- All but eliminated Notre Dame as a potential member of the league should it expand again, saying, "I don't see them as a player. I think (Notre Dame AD) Jack Swarbrick has been consistent about their commitment to the Big East and about their commitment to independence (in football)."

-- Offered that he expects the Big Ten to have a football championship game in 2011, and that it could be wise to settle on a one-year-only site before league officials have time to make a more thorough check of venues and cities next spring.

-- Expressed his desire to have a divisional structure in football finalized in the next 30 to 45 days, and for there to be a nine-game league schedule hopefully by the third or fourth year of Nebraska being a member. He also noted there might not be a need to split other sports into divisions.

Delany was besieged with questions about what he thinks is important to divisional makeup. The three main principles being discussed: Competitive equality. The preservation of traditional rivalry games. And geographic consideration. As for the competitive quality component of that formula, he cited 1993, when Penn State played its first season in the league (and also the point when scholarship limits were going from 95 to 85) as a starting point.

Delany didn't rule out further expansion but said the Big Ten isn't actively involved in any expansion initiatives. "One hundred percent of our energies are focused in on helping Nebraska transition into the conference," he said before adding later that where the Big Ten heads, "a lot of it will depend on the direction we get from our presidents in December."

BAM!!!

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on August 2, 2010 3:29PM CST
You can't blame Noter Dame for turning down the bigslow10.

The Big East is probably the better conference.

Posted by: LosSantosKid on August 2, 2010 3:33PM CST
HA HA HA !

The bitter orange make me lol...

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on August 2, 2010 3:35PM CST
"Delany didn't rule out further expansion..."

Hard to say if Texas would turn down the Bigslow10 like Noter Dame did... but it's worth a shot.

With tOSU AND Texas... we'd have one of the better conferences.

If the Bigslow10 brings in Mizzou..... then the Bigslow10 would become the Big12... but without OU or UT.

Posted by: Ray in Bellevue on August 2, 2010 3:37PM CST
All of this new Big10 stuff should be music to T.O.'s ears and should guarantee his interest in staying on as AD for who knows how long. We are really lucky that he was here at this crucial time in our history. This is history, big time, happening for the Big Red.

Amen and 2nd that Ray...

Posted by: CBHusker on August 2, 2010 3:52PM CST
As self-serving as they were in June, Texas did NU a huge favor in forcing Osborne and Perlman's hand in this thing. The B10 is everyone working together on the same page; while the B12 is all working for one. Somehow I don't see Delaney changing the rules 6 months from now. I'm sure it'll be a lot easier for Osborne to build up the athletic department this way.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on August 2, 2010 4:03PM CST
I believe Delaney said after Nebraska came in to the League, that they would not be pursuing any other Big 12 teams if they decide to expand. I don't think they want any part of Texas's drama.

Posted by: dwc13 on August 2, 2010 4:22PM CST
I believe Delany's comments about not pursuing any other Big XII teams (at that time) were aimed more at Missouri than Texas.

Delany's comments today regarding Notre Dame are interesting. Not sure if I buy it...

Posted by: PT Husker on August 2, 2010 4:27PM CST
The TV landscape will have to have a major shift for ND to consider a conference affiliation in Football. And if they begin to play better as some think forget about it.

IMO, Texas will soon follow their lead, beome independant and leave their followers wondering what happened. I will give it 5 years.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on August 2, 2010 4:32PM CST
Notre Dame though right now has it's on Television contract for football with NBC. If they join the Big 10, they would have to give that up. At this point they are not willing to do that. But NBC apparently is losing money on the Contract with Notre Dame and when it comes up for renewal, Notre Dame may rethink their Independent status and the Big 10 would be the most logical League for them to join. I see them staying Independent for the next three years or so. But stay tuned.

What if the Big12 dissolves?

Posted by: Blackshirtbacker on August 2, 2010 4:34PM CST
Any chance someone else is going to come out in these meetings pointing a finger at Texas? So far this summer NU, the commish of the Pac 10, and now the administration and head football coach at Minnesota have all made accusations towards UT about their lack of honor. Anyone else coming out like these fairly unrelated parties?

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on August 2, 2010 4:35PM CST
In other news... NFL draft guru Mike Mayock replaces Pat Haden in the NBC booth during Noter Dame games this year.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on August 2, 2010 4:36PM CST
Mayock has a bit of a lisp doesn't he?

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on August 2, 2010 4:37PM CST
Standing ovation for Big Ben at Steeler camp.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on August 2, 2010 4:37PM CST
PT - I don't think Texas will go Independent, though one could argue they are pretty much Independent now. It's really hard to schedule games, as Notre Dame admits, it is becoming more difficult of them to schedule teams. I think the benefits of being in a conference are a big plus. I think in five years or less, Texas will be in the Pac 10 along with Oklahoma, and A & M will be in the SEC.

Posted by: knapplc on August 2, 2010 4:48PM CST
What's up, folks? Everyone all excited for the Big 10 move?

Posted by: DustyRed on August 2, 2010 4:59PM CST
Hey LIR guys has Minnesota said anything about Texas vs Minn football schedual 2015, 2016 being canceled because Texas wanted all the revinue and video rights. "Joel Maturi said The kind of agreement we could not come to is the same agreement every other school on our schedule agreed to. Every other school in the Big 12 agreed to this."

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on August 2, 2010 5:11PM CST
Remember when people used to tell me not to put NFL stuff on this blog? That was funny! How many years ago was that?

Posted by: Islander/Husker on August 2, 2010 5:19PM CST
Step, I know you are a Eagle fan. What is Stewart Bradley's situation? is he 100%?

Posted by: CurtB2 on August 2, 2010 5:20PM CST
Blackshirt backer... don't forget about A&M's running dialogue... they don't want to be in the shadow of UT anymore, and that they want their money no matter what, or they walk!:)

That said, UT has put itself on an island. Don't see to many Life rafts around big enough to handle their ego, or with the desire to toss them a line. That basically means they need to live up to their bravado, or their sunk.
I'm not sure, but how good do Longhorns swim?

Posted by: BigAppleHusker on August 2, 2010 5:22PM CST
Did anyone notice that all the coaches had Proper Suit and Tie going on?

Does this mean that next year Bo will have to wear a proper suit and a tie?

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on August 2, 2010 5:29PM CST
IH))) Welp... Bradley is moving really well. He's making plays all over the field. He's in the backfield making plays. He's knocking down passes over the middle. He's running step for step with TE's down the seam.

Really... there is no question with his play. Only question is.... will the knee hold up?

Posted by: Islander/Husker on August 2, 2010 5:31PM CST
I my last post I accidently hit the enter for about two or three seconds, thus the large space between after my post. I like to take up space I guess.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on August 2, 2010 5:31PM CST
Bradley picked off a pass and returned it for 6 in today's practice.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on August 2, 2010 5:34PM CST
If I remember right he hurt the other knee when he played for us. That knee seems to have held up, so hopefully this one will too. But with these type of injuries you never know. If he stays healthy he is all Pro material.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on August 2, 2010 5:36PM CST
I still think the Eagles will regret trading McNabb. I am not convinced that Kolb is the guy. He might prove me wrong though.

Posted by: drivebyposter on August 2, 2010 5:36PM CST
The championship game. Nice.

Posted by: N_trepid on August 2, 2010 5:44PM CST
I thought Kolb proved a more efficient manager of the game in McNabb's absence. Seemed to make better use of his tight ends, better distribution of the ball, and I thought he showed better touch on his passes.

But, that's just me.

Step, you're a Huskers/Eagles fan living in Dallas? Bet that makes ya popular....

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on August 2, 2010 5:46PM CST
Whoops! The Bradley pick6 was Saturday... not today. Sorry.

Remember that Kickoff Classic against Penn State?

NU 44 Penn 6

It was fitting retribution for the previous year....

Knapp,

Hope you are doing well. It has been a while.

Posted by: N_trepid on August 2, 2010 5:54PM CST
br1,

exactly.

CLASS.

We've found some great partners for NU's future.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on August 2, 2010 5:58PM CST
IH))) Bradley has had a bad shoulder since high school also. He sits out practice periodically with shoulder pain. But when healthy... Bradley can really move out there for a 255 lb'er.

The Eagles have been good... but not good enough. They weren't gonna get anything better out of McNabb as he is on the downside. And with McNabb in the last year of his deal... even if Kolb isn't as good... it was still best to trade him and get something for him instead of letting him walk for nothing at the end of this year.

Also... the real problem was... the Eagles young studs(Jackson, Celek, Maclin) preferred Kolb as he is much more accurate and relies on the system more. Kolb has it all... but one question remains. Will he turn the ball over... or not? It's pretty much that simple.

obtw... the Eagles turned the McNabb pick into FS Nate Allen who looks fantastic so far.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on August 2, 2010 6:01PM CST
N trepid))) The StephRaZor is a veeery likable guy. They love me here in Texas just like all of youse do.

I live in Austin.

Yeah... no s***. 44-6 was right. Quite right! That PSU guy was about 3 yards out of bounds the year before. That ref was a disgrace.

Posted by: Big Red in Big D 007 on August 2, 2010 6:02PM CST
N_Trepid,

Step lives around Austin, way too liberal for the Dallas area.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on August 2, 2010 6:08PM CST
Kolb has only played in 3 games. So... hard to say one way or the other today.

Once... after getting demolished by the ravens for a half... they benched McNabb and Kolb came in and drove them right down the field to the 1 yard line... only to toss an INT to Ed Reed who returned it 108 yards for 6.

Then last year Kolb became the 1st QB in history to toss for 300 in his 1st 2 starts.

Once against the chiefs... he tossed for 300 and a bunch of TD's... which means nothing.

And once more Vs the saints he had a 300 yard game. But at the start of the 2nd half he tossed an INT that essentially lost the game.

So... just have to wait and see if the costly turnovers continue or not.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on August 2, 2010 6:11PM CST
Big Red))) I try to stay out of politics... but am certainly more Republican than Democrat.

Two weeks ago... I paid $600 bucks to have dinner with Ted Nugent in Dallas. A Dem would never do that!

obtw... the main course? Zebra! It was delicious.

Step,
just seeing if I could push the right button. I watch you stir the pot all the time.

Posted by: N_trepid on August 2, 2010 6:21PM CST
I think Kolb will prove to be an excellent QB. More reps with the #1's and more experience certainly won't hurt him.

Zebra with the Motor City Madman!

Beautiful.

I'm here in BigD as well, living behind enemy lines....

Posted by: N_trepid on August 2, 2010 6:26PM CST
Wasn't that Penn State referee removed from officiating after another questionable call?

Thought I remembered something about the same guy handing Penn State a victory over Alabama with some very creative officiating....

I didn't realize that Jo Pa had been sick, I hope he is able to continue coaching if that is what he wants to do. He is truly a class act. Does he have anyone in place to take over for him once he retires? I hope he sticks around until we get them on the schedule so that I can be there for his final season. GBR

Realizing of course that Delaney & crew have been working on possible scheduling possibilities, here's one that appears on UofI blog:

Be sure and read the comments

Yeah... Tom Bradley.

Bradley runs everything right now. JoPa is a head figure... but he doesn't deal with X's and O's anymore.

Posted by: AllThingsTen on August 2, 2010 9:26PM CST
3&Out, the word I get regarding PSU is that they are aware that JoPa won't coach for very many years and that PSU is recruiting specifically to make another run at the NC. Supposedly, they already have some great players. We'll see. tOSU is one of the hurdles that has to be overcome. Also, we'll have to see how a conference championship plays into their plans.

Posted by: RedDog77 on August 2, 2010 9:45PM CST
I hope Joepas farewell tour comes through Lincoln.

Posted by: 3&OUT on August 2, 2010 9:48PM CST
I just saw Jo Pa's interview and he did look very weak. Step thanks for the information.

ATT, although I wish Jo Pa the best if he gets a shot at another NC I hope it is not at our expense.

Does anyone else see Jo Pa as Joe Pesci's father? Seriously, if they did a movie on Jo Pa they would have a great look alike in Pesci. Hope that Jo Pa can get better. He's one of those guys that even if you don't like PSU, it's tough not to like Jo Pa.

Did you get all of ur dirt work done?

Posted by: PT Husker on August 3, 2010 8:33AM CST
By all reports from those in attendance for the first time. Jim Delaney came off very inmpressive. It is his party. He is in charge and everybody understands that.

He has been there 22 years and does not appear to be going anywhere.

Stability and harmony for the most part.

Kind of a nice feel during the honeymoon stage.

Another perfect season of hope is just around the corner.

Funny topic on one of the radio stations on my way in to work. They seem to be all excited about a recruit that was taken from UNL and has committed to KU.

I don't have anything against the young man so I will not comment further.

I just thought that it was funny how some people spin things for their ratings. The perverbial nonsense about recruiting out of your conference came up again as well.

It must be nothing short of a miracle that we have successfully recruited Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Kansas, Missouri, Georgia, Florida,...heck...
where have we not recruited from?

If a young man is interested in UNL then it makes absolutely no difference what conference we play in. As a matter of fact there will probably be no better time for ones family to watch their child play, in high definition no less - if not all now then they will soon all be in high definition, than once we take part in Big Ten play.

Of course, who would want to play the likes of Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan State, Purdue, Minnesota and Indiana? I know that I would but what do I know.

Posted by: charger on August 3, 2010 9:02AM CST
No matter what some of the teams in the Big 10 records were this conference always seems to get the luv from the media.

Posted by: PT Husker on August 3, 2010 9:03AM CST
Bleeding, I was in my car last night so I got to Listen to parts of Sprots nightly. A guy called in from Kansas and commented on the vitrol being spewed down there about the Huskers. Especially from K State. Lane Grindle dismissed it as jealously. I have found it interesting that CU has left as well but very little, if anything, is said about that.

Oh well, as the old saying goes, "walk a mile in their shoes". I am sure they don't fit very well about now.

Posted by: BleedingRed on August 3, 2010 10:09AM CST
Obviously it bothers a lot of people that UNL was able to make a move that will dramatically enhance their future.

There is not much that I or anyone else can do about others discontent and jealousy.

It is just annoying to constantly hear those left behind whine all of the time. Much like some that have visited here from time to time. When someone else does something that benefits them you don't whine about it. You find a way to accomplish your goals in a manner that is similiar to what others have accomplished.

It guess that it boils down to those that complain and those that don't. I have never thought much of the ones that constantly complain but never do the things that are neccessary to change their situation.

I actually think I may have summed it up pretty well...I feel better now. :)

Posted by: fleaflicker on August 3, 2010 10:15AM CST
Really it doesn't surprise about KSU.......they've always had terrible fans. Coach Pelini will use the animosity to fire the players up. I think Coach loves to play away games. I look for Snyder and the Mildcats to play their best game of the season....after all if they beat the Huskers their season is a success. That game could be closer than some think, IMO.

Posted by: BleedingRed on August 3, 2010 10:20AM CST
I think that I am in line with coach Pelini's thoughts on playing any game.

...It really doesn't matter who, when, where we play or under what circumstances. Regardless of the opposition we should be prepared as though we are playing for the National Championship every single game.

I would be disappointed if I found that any team that we play does not give us their best. That is what we want year in and year out. That is what we bring and I expect that our opponent does the same.

Later.

Posted by: fleaflicker on August 3, 2010 10:21AM CST
The CU/NU game will be a lot different this year. Being allies as the traitors our fans and CU fans will prob be holding hands during the game............yuck!!!!

Posted by: PlyNeb on August 3, 2010 11:23AM CST
I really don't understand the bitterness of KU, K St, and ISU. They continually voted with Texas and against Nebraska. Well they've still got Texas (even if they have to pay them to stay with them), so they should be happy.

Flea, I hope we shut sCUm out and hold them to less than 100 yards of Total Offense and less than 5 first downs.

Absolutely utilize this final opportunity to put an ! on a great run and head into the Title Game with Buffy's pelt...

I'll take a 7-6 win, mind you, or 41-40; but let's get real. We could be dominant and I hope the guys going into 2-a-Days have that attitude.
