TO and Joe Pa together again; Delany talks title game, scheduling format

After Jim Delany concluded Monday's Big Ten football media gathering with some insightful thoughts about where he sees the league headed, Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne made a well-timed stop to the stage (unquestionably all staged by the Big Ten Network) for a quick photo with the commissioner and Penn State coach Joe Paterno (who looks frail from a summer illness). I plan to chat with Osborne after he gets out of meetings with Big Ten athletic directors, but he'll have a tough act following Delany. About to start his 22nd year as Big Ten commish, Delany: -- All but eliminated Notre Dame as a potential member of the league should it expand again, saying, "I don't see them as a player. I think (Notre Dame AD) Jack Swarbrick has been consistent about their commitment to the Big East and about their commitment to independence (in football)." -- Offered that he expects the Big Ten to have a football championship game in 2011, and that it could be wise to settle on a one-year-only site before league officials have time to make a more thorough check of venues and cities next spring. -- Expressed his desire to have a divisional structure in football finalized in the next 30 to 45 days, and for there to be a nine-game league schedule hopefully by the third or fourth year of Nebraska being a member. He also noted there might not be a need to split other sports into divisions. Delany was besieged with questions about what he thinks is important to divisional makeup. The three main principles being discussed: Competitive equality. The preservation of traditional rivalry games. And geographic consideration. As for the competitive quality component of that formula, he cited 1993, when Penn State played its first season in the league (and also the point when scholarship limits were going from 95 to 85) as a starting point. Delany didn't rule out further expansion but said the Big Ten isn't actively involved in any expansion initiatives. "One hundred percent of our energies are focused in on helping Nebraska transition into the conference," he said before adding later that where the Big Ten heads, "a lot of it will depend on the direction we get from our presidents in December."
