Three keys vs. Texas Tech
Posted by: Steve Sipple on October 15, 2009 at 7:44AM CST

Nebraska looks to improve to 5-1 and 2-0 in the Big 12. It's obviously crucial to hold serve at home. Here are three keys to doing so:

1. Open-field tackling. Like a lot of spread offenses, Texas Tech often gets the ball to its receivers in wide-open spaces. "They're going to make their catches. They're going to make their plays,"  Nebraska secondary coach Marvin Sanders said. "You just have to hold that 6-yard catch to a 6-yard catch. We have to tackle.

"Tackling's always important. Except there's a difference trying to make a tackle in a phone booth compared to making a tackle in the open field."

2. Be more physical on offense.  Nebraska rushed for 207 yards against a stout Virginia Tech defense back on Sept. 19.  The Huskers were held to 105 rushing yards at Missouri last week, and that total was bolstered by a late flurry. There since has been a lot of discussion about Big Red's lack of commitment to the run last week. But Ron Brown takes a broader view. "The bottom line is, we were not as physical offensively as we have been in the other games this year, as a whole unit," he said. If NU wants to control the clock -- as it did last year against Tech -- the Huskers will need to bring their hard hats offensively.

3. All right, broken record here, but the penalties are annoying. The Huskers were flagged 12 times (for 108 yards) last week. Cutting that in half would be a good start. NU is averaging 7.8 penalties per game for 69.6 yards to rank 95th nationally. It ranked 98th in the category last year.

BAM at TT

BAM, GBR

Posted by: winning_cures_all on October 15, 2009 7:49AM CST
Is anyone else concerned that Tech is about four plays short of being undefeated? And is a 10 1/2 point spread accurate considering how close the Texas game was?

Posted by: Stone on October 15, 2009 7:51AM CST
Other Key Points:
- Score more points than TT
- Hit the QB hard and often
- Ball Control
- No Turnovers
- Loud Crowd
- WIN

My virgin post, be gentle with me......

I can't wait for Saturday to see if we are for real. Run....Pass....I don't care as long as we score early and often. And what Husker fan doesn't enjoy some defensive dominance!

The Mizwho game made the season for me as I live among the enemy down here, hate to be so easy, but it's all good from here.

And, BTW, how bout that Husker volleyball team last night.

Gobigred!

I think Ron Brown's assessment will please alot of the Huskernation, it sure did for me? GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

Posted by: JoGale on October 15, 2009 8:13AM CST
IMO

Texas Tech is better than Missouri. So NU better be ready.

Posted by: PT Husker on October 15, 2009 8:17AM CST
No secret here. Tech puts the ball in the air. a lot. the pressure from the front 4 creates many opportunities for picks. I see that happening a lot. Asante and Amakamura have a monster day. DONU covers the spread with ease.

Pass the Koolaide.

Country Husker. Virgins are always welcome here.

Posted by: Country Husker on October 15, 2009 8:24AM CST
Thanks, PT.

I have been a lurker for quite a while, finally decided to join the fun.

Really I read the site just to check out wrestlers avatars.

pervy........ I know.....

I like you already. (Grin). Picking on Wrestler is a past time of mine. Oh Hi Professor.

Posted by: Denver Bob on October 15, 2009 8:29AM CST
I agree that TT is better than Mizzou. NU's offense will need to have a good day so that all the pressure is not on the Husker Defense. TT is crazy good at what they do on offense. A heavy dose of screens can be expected in an attempt to take advantage of Nebraska's push from the front four. Limiting TT Yacs will be the difference between TT scoring 17 or 34 points. Regardless, the NU offense (with the help of a pick 6 from the defense) needs to put up 35 to 42 points at home in good weather.

GBR!

Posted by: WyHuskerFan on October 15, 2009 8:34AM CST
Definately time for the offense to step up. Home crowd, good weather, and relatively healthy, they need to sustain long scoring drives and limit Tech's touches. With respect to penalties, it's hard to believe going into game 6 we need to harp on staying focused, but it's a recurring problem. Penalties on Suh in Columbia were bogus, really bad calls. Non call on Weatherspoon for the punch was the worst, and I'm surprised there's been no mention of it my the sports writers. GBR, Wreck Tech!

Posted by: PT Husker on October 15, 2009 8:35AM CST
Limiting YAC has been a wonderful suprize this year. the tackling in the secondary is markedly better. Yes, they will completeseveral passes underneath. that is what they do. but as the field gets shorter that becomes more difficult.

Maybe I am nuts but for some reason I am just very, very, confident about this game.

Posted by: Nebtech on October 15, 2009 8:39AM CST
I agree with PT husker... Lots of pressure to create the hurried throws!! I don't care how the Husker offense gets it done as long as they produce... As far as the clock is concerned.....Many times I have seen teams that were successful with the pass, have the lead and then go to the conservative ground game to burn clock, only to lose the momentum and ultimately the game!!! My hope is for the Huskers for find something that works and use it, while maintaining a balanced attack to keep the tech defense honest. Put the points on the board and let the clock take care of itself!!

BTW: Welcome aboard Country Husker!!

Winning_cures_all ... we are 1 point and a hail-mary pass from being undefeated!

Posted by: winning_cures_all on October 15, 2009 8:41AM CST
Between our offensive ineptitude last week and our recent history against Tech I see this game as a defining moment of this season. Will the big red pounce and make a statement or slide back to mediocraty? I'm hoping for the former but fear the latter.

Posted by: 4BigRed on October 15, 2009 8:47AM CST
Last year we won the TOP battle 40 minutes to 20 minutes. Needs to be close to that again this year for a chance to win, IMO.

Posted by: Nebtech on October 15, 2009 8:52AM CST
The Husker D has proven that it can get the job done.... This is the weekend for the offense to prove that they have what it takes... That will make it a little easier to predict how the season will go... I am not sure the MU game answered many questions about our offensive production. This game has the potential to prove or disprove how consistant the offense can be against a good team in good weather.

Posted by: PT Husker on October 15, 2009 8:58AM CST
the Pirate ship will be blown out of the water. Huskers set sail for the conference Championship on saturday.

Posted by: Bloozman on October 15, 2009 9:27AM CST
4BigRed, Last year the scheme was to keep their offense off the field, and it worked until Bo decided to give them the ball again by going for overtime. HUGE mistake!

Huskers need to get that offense on track cuz it will be very difficult to match TD's with these guys.

Posted by: joe t on October 15, 2009 9:36AM CST
Three things:

1) Will Lee show up to play against a quality team for 4 quarters?

2) Can the OL move anyone?

3) Can we win the 1 on 1 matchups on D?

Posted by: The Marlboro Man on October 15, 2009 9:38AM CST
My Keys:

1. Hit 'em in the mouth.

2. Hit 'em in the mouth again.

3. Limit the big play.

Posted by: fleaflicker on October 15, 2009 9:39AM CST
I agree with Wrestler's comment about Ron Brown. I'll be that Coach Pelini had a "sit down" with the offensive coaches and explained that the type of execution we all saw in the misery game is unaccecptable. I'm predicting a little more physical play out of our boys on O this week end.
BTW......I would like to see the player pulled out of the game and ride the bench for a quarter or two after they commit a penalty......namely the O-line. That crap has got to stop....drive killers.

Posted by: PT Husker on October 15, 2009 9:43AM CST
Joe.

Hope so.

Against tech, Yes.

Unqualified Yes.

Saw somehwere that many teams blitz to stop the run. I think Mizzu showed us some of that. We need to counter that with extra blockers.

The Tight ends become critical in the short passing game. Quick release stuff could go big with no body back there to stop them.

Hell this game plan stuff is easy. Just read the blog Wats. Your probs are over. He He He.

Pt........are you drinking Bloody Marys this morning? You seem pretty happy.

Posted by: PT Husker on October 15, 2009 9:45AM CST
Flea, that is a great Idea. Hadn't thought of it but I may sneak off.

Posted by: fleaflicker on October 15, 2009 9:47AM CST
Joe,

#4...can the receivers catch a ball.

Posted by: PT Husker on October 15, 2009 9:50AM CST
Flea, I guess I am just tired of All the gloom and despair. Reminds me of the Old Hee Haw song.

Rather hear more "don't worry, Be happy".

Posted by: fleaflicker on October 15, 2009 9:55AM CST
Pt.....I know...you'd think we're 0-4 this season. I'm pretty optimistic about how this process is working. We all knew there'd be bumps in the road along the way. But you gotta love the attitude that the players have.

Posted by: Ehusker on October 15, 2009 9:55AM CST
Media predicts N to win, however, I think it is 50-50 shot. Will our offense finally click and produce enough points to win this game?

Posted by: fleaflicker on October 15, 2009 9:57AM CST
Meant 0-5

Posted by: PT Husker on October 15, 2009 10:10AM CST
I guess we oughta listen to them. Reading this blog after a 15 point win has been really depressing.

Oh well I guess it is the new rope thing. glad the kids have a little moe optimism the we do..

Posted by: PT Husker on October 15, 2009 10:14AM CST
I mean it is all about, " Gezz we were lucky this happened" and "Well we shoulda done that better." And "if this doesn't change we are doomed".. Not ganna buy it. this is a group that finds a way and that is what matters.

The south is going down. And we are gonna bring em.

Go Big Red.

Posted by: fleaflicker on October 15, 2009 10:21AM CST
Pt......last year's seniors really started this "never quit" attitude and the team has bought into that.

I heard a quote yesterday on the radio:

If you keep predicting doom......you may become a profit.

Posted by: TommyOC on October 15, 2009 10:27AM CST
#5 - Be prepared to stop the mad man and his offense for 4 straight downs any time during the game, no matter where they are on the field. He's a nut and will go for it when ever he feels like it.

Suh and his band of brothers will get pressure, and look for P-Dilly to do some special stuff Saturday. I said many times when others were ready to write him off that he'd make a huge impact this year and he's coming on strong. GoBigRed!

Posted by: NishBigRed on October 15, 2009 10:33AM CST
I asked this question yesterday. Maybe none of the bloggers get to Memorial Stadium regularly, I will ask it again, but how loud does it get in Memorial on game day. The last time I attended a game was in the mid 80s. I don’t remember Memorial as a loud stadium. I hope that has changed. It would be a definite advantage if crowd noise could play a part and distrust TT offense and their ability to audible.

Posted by: PT Husker on October 15, 2009 10:42AM CST
Nish, I guess I have nothing to compare it with cause I don't get to many other stadiums. But It can be damn loud from where I sit. It has helped immensly now that the North End zone is closed in completely.

I will tell, this. That place was Shaking after Alex's fieldgoal last year. And It is not an obnoxious type of niose. Just yelling for the good guys is how I would describe it.

Posted by: Ehusker on October 15, 2009 10:57AM CST
The penalties need to stop if they want to become a championship-caliber team.

Coaches have to address that rather sooner than later and they need to get it fixed.

Posted by: NishBigRed on October 15, 2009 11:01AM CST
Isn't it actually Husker Power? I don't remember which on I yelled, but I know I spent a few Saturday afternoon, either yelling Husker or Power.

Thanks PT.
In the 80, I use to get tickest from a long time season ticket holder. There was an older couple who sat next to us. The Husband, poor fellow, couldn't see very good or hear. Most of the game he would turn around and asked what just happened or he would be complaining that we need to put the other QB.in Thing is the QB he was yelling for usually graduated several years back. I swear once he turned around and said "We need to put Jerry Tagge in!" God Bless him.

Posted by: PT Husker on October 15, 2009 11:04AM CST
I got a sneaky feeling that those penalties are discussed on a regular basis.

JMHO but it is not up to the coaches to stop those it is up to the player. Now if you have a repeat offender that keeps making the same mistake then maybe he needs to come to the sideline for a visit.. And I will also bet that is already happening.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on October 15, 2009 11:42AM CST
I've got a few minutes here, so here's my two cents worth. Penalties are penalties...make sense? No, not to me either. Try this...coaches don't like penalties but they're not going to react the same to all penalties. Those that occur because mental errors are probably the worst, those that are the result of aggression are mostly looked upon as unfortunate but typically don't draw the ire of the coaches. Holding penalties can fall into a few different categories, most often it's because the o-lineman didn't bring his feet with him and he is getting beat. Sometimes someone comes free and if you don't hold him he's going to kill your QB, so you sometimes have to choose to hold. Receivers are out in space and easily seen by all, theirs are mostly from letting their feet die and letting their hands get outside their framework as a result while the defender is trying to get away from him. Penalties happen but believe this...officials will call more penalties on teams that have a reputation for commiting penalties because they will watch more closely to "find" those penalties. Much more leniance is given to the team that does not have the reputation for penalties. I don't know why it's that way, but it "IS" that way.

Posted by: ArguingWithIdiots on October 15, 2009 12:06PM CST
Just imagine how those penalties get under the skin of the AD. He was Mr Execution.

Posted by: NishBigRed on October 15, 2009 12:08PM CST
Where is everyone this moring? They can't still all be in live chat?

Posted by: Crazy Jack on October 15, 2009 12:23PM CST
I don't agree with you Sip. Special teams is going to determine who wins the game. TT brings the leading punt & kick returner in the B12 to Lincoln. Their punter might be a weakness, they use their starting D end as a punter. They set their QB up deep and throw quick that might neutralize our front D. Their middle linebacker makes a lot of tackels so playaction passes over the middle will be available. TT can stop the pass by dropping a lineman into coverage. All this is a mute point if we give TT great field postion the whole game. We have to pin them deep and keep them there, that limits the plays they can run.

Posted by: TomOs on October 15, 2009 1:01PM CST
To me it all comes down to a pass rush and tackling,, and a consistent O..

Posted by: Outside The Box on October 15, 2009 1:16PM CST
HUSKER POWER WOULD MAKE MORE SENSE HOWEVER THAT'S NOT HOW IT'S STATED DURING GAMETIME SO YEAH
--------------------------------
You might also be surprised to know most of the cheers are performed differenly during gametime. For example:

RED, GO BIG
FENSE DE
HUSKERS! (clap clap clap clap clap) LET'S GO

Posted by: Mickelson on October 15, 2009 3:17PM CST
My three keys:
1) Stop the run
2) No tunrovers
3) Dominate special teams

We win 34-17 if we do this. This is the best team we have played so far this year.

Posted by: huskerdog/colo. on October 15, 2009 3:43PM CST
Memorial Stadium can be VERY LOUD depending on the opponent! If you happend to go to a game in 70's, 80's or 90's during our dominance period, the fans could be somewhat laid back vs. lesser teams that we'd routinely beat by 40+ points. Against your FLA STs., Okie Nooners, sCUm's heyday ('90 - '94) it would border on INSANITY!!! Bobby "I'LL NEVER RETIRE" Bowden said it was the BEST ATMOSHERE in college football!!!

Posted by: huskerdog/colo. on October 15, 2009 4:18PM CST
And yes this game should be LOUD & vs the MOONER NOONERS it WILL BE INSANITY!!! ISU, unfortunately, overall will be more subdued. One game that stands out for me was vs. sCUm '92 in a mosoon! We had lost to them in '89 (Boulder), '90 (Lincoln) co NC yr. for Bluffs, '91 (Boulder Freeze Bowl) 19 -19 tie. It was a CRAZY WET NITE - DONU won something like 52 -7!!!

Posted by: dsdevlin on October 15, 2009 10:33PM CST
Just got back to a computer...I love a vacation. No Blackshirts awarded yet? When we keep TT under 20 they'll be handed out. Defense is nationally under the radar but this is a really good TT offense. 12th man Memorial will help and watch for Mendoza to bust one long. Big Red D will score too.... The only problem with this season is that the games aren't every other day! Let's win some games and chase the weekass teams (Boise, Cincy) out of the top 10!
