Younger Fisher picks Hawkeyes
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on July 30, 2010 at 2:02PM CST
Cole Fisher, younger brother of Husker linebacker Sean Fisher, has committed to Iowa, according to Scout.com and Rivals.com.

That likely could set up a fun situation where the two Fishers are suited up in a game on opposing sides of the field when Nebraska starts playing in the Big Ten in 2011.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Fisher has mostly played safety for Millard North but is projected as a linebacker at the next level. Fisher did not have an offer from Nebraska, but did have one from Kansas.

Anyhow, exciting day for the Fisher family. Sean's and Cole's dad, Todd Fisher, was a walk-on cornerback for Nebraska who lettered in 1983.

Good luck young Fish at IU.

I don't know anything about Cole in terms of his skill level, but at this point I can't help but feel good knowing that our coaching staff didn't give in to pressure to offer him a scholarship just because his brother is here. He may end up being a good college player, but I have to believe he wasn't offered at NU because he hasn't shown that potential yet.

Very nicely put.

Besides we currently have 18 linebackers on our 2010 roster.

Nebraska likes to keep it in the family. If the little Fish didn't get an offer from Nebraska, then he isn't good enough. Wish him the best at Iowa, except when they play the Huskers.

Good stuff. Here is to hoping Fisher light can whoop some Big 10 butt. Good family.

I hope we at least gave him the due attention. Otherwise, he could have a huge chip on his shoulder when he plays us...and that can make all the "measurables" pale in comparison.

I am guessing Nebraska was hoping to get him to walk on... because of the family history. I also bet that they will keep an eye on him and may yet extend him an offer at some point and he could end up switching to Nebraska if they offer...

Nothing is done until signing day, particularly with in-state kids with strong Husker ties...

He had a good offer from a great school and football program in Iowa, he had to lock it up and take it while it is there... in case Nebraska does not offer.

I think there are a bunch of players out there that could be stars anywhere but at DONU and the same goes for our stars. Look at Jared Crick, I don't think the rest of the big 12 wanted him the way we did and if they knew he would become the star that he is here would have recuited him just so he wouldn't beat them..... does this make sense our has my brain just melted from the Heat!

OH my
gbr!

I guess what I was trying to say is that just because we didn't recruit him does not mean our coach's think he's not good enough to be a Husker. Bo might of called and Cole responded that he allways wanted to be a Hawkeye because he loves the TV show M.A.S.H. or something like that. Its all about fit and needs, and sometimes even about academics...Whitt?...

Where is all of the bashing of Cole since he is going to Iowa?

This site has been incredibly civilized when compared to other in-state recruits who have left Nebraska.

This is more like the Nebraska way to do things.

As for the decision. Did NU hold off on an offer since Cole tore his ACL last basketball season to see how his knee healed?

Did Cole want to go somewhere else to escape his brother's shadow and NU knew that up front?

Iowa does things correctly, as do the majority of Big 10 schools. It is unfortunate the NU doesn't currently have a spot for him. If his knee is ok, he'll probably end up being a "good get" for the Hawkeyes.

I dont think Cole was offered because we have too many L.B.s already, with Coach Pelini's "peso" defense we only have 1 on the field ata time anyway,I think they let him go because it was in Coles best interest to go somewhere else,it is a numbers game.

Best of luck to Cole, luckily He and Sean will be able to go facemask to facemask on some kickoffs here in a couple years. NU has had some decent brother/father/son combos over the years: Toby and Jimmy Williams, Charles and Irving Fryer, Guy and Mike Rozier, Ty/Baker/Dean Steinkuler, Tom/Bo/Barrett Ruud, Johnny and Terry Rogers, Jason and Christian Peter, the Bullocks, the Davises.... am I missing some?

Little brothers often choose a different school than their big brothers because....it was their brothers school.

There's something to be said for striking out on your own, making your own path.

If little Fisher was recruited by Iowa, he's no slouch.

Good luck being a Hawkeye, kid. You'll love Iowa City, and Ferentz is a great coach.

Go Big Red.

Agree with Viking.

If Iowa wanted him, he's a good get.

I'm pretty impressed with the level of talent we already have on the team. I see nothing but quality depth everywhere I look, and yet I still expect some homegrown walk-ons to shine. They always do.

My God, what a turn-around Bo Pelini has engineered in three short years!

Posted by: Codger on July 30, 2010 7:11PM CST
I will just offer an "amen" to trepied's comment. I used to think that the coach was not that big of deal. That talent would overcome all. (See Texas).

But I agree, thank god Bo Pellini was our most recent hire.
