St. Edward's Super Bowl lore
Posted by: Steve Sipple on February 9, 2010 at 7:55PM CST

Thank you to the loyal readers who pointed out that brothers Scott and Andrew Shanle aren't the only Super Bowl participants from St. Edward (population 700).

Ex-Husker Pat Fischer, born in St. Edward, played 17 seasons as a defensive back in the NFL (1961-77). He played for Washington in Super Bowl VII in 1973 -- a 14-7 loss to the undefeated Miami Dolphins.

"He never missed game, can you believe that?" Ken Fischer, one of Pat's five brothers, said Tuesday night from Sun City, Ariz. "He was a good little football player."

Pat stood about 5-foot-10 and weighed about 150, Ken recalled. Pat lettered at Nebraska from 1958-60. He followed to NU three of his older brothers -- Cletus (1945-48), Ken (1948-49) and Rex (1955).

Pat was born in St. Edward and lived there until about the seventh grade, when the family moved to Oakland, Neb., said Ken Fischer, whom I met as a reporter at the Grand Island Independent in 1990 when Ken was the head coach at Grand Island High.

The Fischer family is intertwined in the fabric of Nebraska football. Toughness is a family trademark.

Bam. Cletus Fischer came to my school when I signed my letter of intent to play for DONU.

Ken Fisher was a great high school football coach, I believe he won around 255 games and GI Senior High and Lincoln Southeast had some battles, he also won a State Championship. His teams ran the wishbone and always tough defense. A lot of his games were low scoring. He believed in playing Seniors, and would tell those coming in for their first year, they would not see much time on the Varsity until they were Seniors. He had both Junior Highs running the same offense and defense he ran, so by the time they got to Senior High, they had everything down pat. And yes, like all Fishers, tough as nails.

I have eaten too much bbq, drank a few too many brewskies but tonight was so special. Thx to the St. Edward Nebraska boys and so glad they got to share in this victory. They'll have the bling to wear for the rest of their lives and be known as Super Bowl Champions.

Sean Payton never put the Lombardi trophy down and waved it throughout the parade at the fans. From the jaws of such misery, death, and suffering to a day like this, words cannot describe it. It will take me a while to get over this, if I ever do. CoCa Cola put out special edition cokes today. Wish I could send everybody one.

Go Big Red

Pat was one tough dude. I remember watching him in the pros. Not so much as a Husker cause I was still in High school.

Posted by: PT Husker on February 9, 2010 8:38PM CST
Glad you enjoyed yourself Busie. You and your state deserve it.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on February 9, 2010 8:45PM CST
Busie, the players at the parade were just having a love fest with the fans. They seemed more in awe of the fans that the fans were of them. It's just an amazing connection.

My dad was a big Cardinal fan, back in the 60's, and the two players, he always talked about on the Cards, for toughness on D, was NU's Pat Fischer and a player named Larry Wilson, maybe some of you remember those two playing together?

Busiekcreek, Barbecue and celebrating for Super Bowl victory, are you in heaven yet? Oh, sorry, need a BF like Tebow, that will put you in heaven? "Heaven, I'm in heaven"

Now if the Cubs win the World Series this fall, well miracles do happen? Cubs winning, maybe that's a little too much believing?

The first line reads, "Thank you to the loyal readers who pointed out that brothers Scott and Andrew Shanle aren't the only Super Bowl champions from St. Edward (population 700)."

The next sentence, "Ex-Husker Pat Fischer, born in St. Edward, played 17 seasons as a defensive back in the NFL (1961-77). He played for Washington in Super Bowl VII in 1973 -- a 14-7 loss to the undefeated Miami Dolphins."

Since when is losing a Super Bowl mean you are a champion? I do believe that makes two champions and one participant.

Besides the oversight, this is pretty impressive stock coming out of St. Ed. I want whatever they are putting in the water.

Posted by: Busiekcreek on February 9, 2010 9:18PM CST
Wrestler, I am one happy mortal today. What's strange is I feel something huge is brewing in Lincoln. Just keep your glad rags pressed and ready for when the train pulls in the station. Funny, I remember my first post on LITR was with rluben and I mentioned little engines that could and hope.

Posted by: Uncle Fester on February 10, 2010 1:16AM CST
Yeah, that's not too bad. What about Kent McCloughan (is that the right spelling of his last name?). He played at Broken Bow, graduating around 1963, then went to NU and the NFL thereafter. I recollect he played with Oakland (perhaps among other teams), and didn't he make the Superbowl (or the NFL championship game that preceded it)?

Posted by: Uncle Fester on February 10, 2010 1:21AM CST
Wrestler, re the Cubs.

The Cubs will not win the World Series. That kind of miracle does not occur.

Posted by: Bloozman on February 10, 2010 7:54AM CST
The Cubs have certainly had their chances recently, and blew it, but I believe in Sweet Lou. There's always hope! Go Cubbies!!!

Posted by: SuperHusker17 on February 10, 2010 8:03AM CST
Heck at least the Cubs can make it to the playoffs to have the chance to blow it. My Royals haven't made the playoffs since they won it in '85. So I've yet to see them even make the playoffs in my lifetime (not quite the same as Cubs fans, I know). I'm pretty sure this will be the last year in KC for Greinke unless they do well this coming year. I think if the BoSox can win it with their "curse of the babino" then there's hope for the Cubs.

I bet Andrew is very proud of his Super Bowl ring. Those long days of mini-camps and the week in, week out physical and mental toll was well worth it.

Wait...he signed in December as a practice player. He didn't deserve a ring. He really isn't a Super Bowl Champion. Next story, please.

If you get the Coca Cola collectors cans, Busie. Keep them in a safe place. I have a six pack of Coke still in the cans from when the Redskins beat the Bills and kept them in the closet. My wife went moving things around and poked a hole into one of the cans. And it's not like the Redskins will be winning Super Bowls anytime soon.

Posted by: Huskerzone on February 10, 2010 8:43AM CST
If St. Edward's gave a big parade for the Shanle's, it would last what....3 blocks? I'm not knocking little towns, I am from one myself. Nothing to do, nothing there to damage, not easy to get into trouble.

Posted by: PT Husker on February 10, 2010 9:00AM CST
The Parade might only be 3 bloocks long but How long would the party last???

Posted by: Wrestler on February 10, 2010 9:19AM CST
PT, is this a math problem? Standard deviation problem?

So, I need to know the difference, from the statistical average? Meaning, I need to know, the difference between the fixed value of parties, in size demographics, to like cities, such as St. Ed's in NE. and compare it to this particular, or individual party, that would come from the Super Bowl win, impacting St. Ed's in this specific way?

Need, some help for establishing fixed values, to parties of this nature across NE., in towns, of like populations and size, please?

For the Cubs thing? With all above, "hope springs eternal"? As my parents always liked the Cardinals in baseball, so I chose to be a Cubs follower?

Somebody, has to like the down and out? But one wishes, the down and out, would rise like the Saints, did this Super Bowl?

Oh well, there are some pretty lousy, rugby teams over here in HK, as well as some good ones, so I always pull for the poor ones? It's my Cubs syndrome, I suppose?

Now the HK rats, that, I am a equal opportunity killer, afterall, a rat, is a rat, so no discrimination, on my part?

Let's see, not much Husker football to discuss today, so, any big news with any bloggers?

The latest news at my house is my youngest just passed his drivers test this morning on the first try, on his 16th birthday. Might not sound like much, but in our town this is a big deal as our examiner never passes any kid the first time.

Most people go out of town for the test, it's that bad, but dad is a hard a$$ and makes them all pass here. Anyway, I am feeling older now as I have no kids that are not drivers.

Otherwise, I can not stand the wait for next football season. After experiencing the highs of the 80's and 90's, and the lows of the decline in Husker dominance, I am damn ready for some more of what we saw this year. Hard nosed defense, and some ball control offense that can get 5 yds a carry against anybody, will be just fine with me for fall 2010.

This is about as excited about the future of Husker football as I have ever been. It's a nice feeling to believe that we have a legit shot at Big 12 championships again.

And, by the way, MU jumping to the big10 was on the news here in Missouri last night again. They were interviewing those pretentious MU alumni moneybags who were all for the "prestige" of joining the big10! What hogwash. One went so far as to make some lame comment about why would you settle for fast food when you could have gourmet, or some such rich guy crap. The real story, "we (MU) are a middle of the conference performer in all Big 12 sports, and we think we can have a chance in the big10."

And by the way, Gary Pinkel was on tv not sounding very happy about the direction that MU is going on this. His comment was about all the time and effort they spend recruiting in Texas that will probably not work so well as a big 10 team.

Hey, if this happens, it opens a spot in the north for our friends at Oklahoma. Bring back the rivalry! Then we can pick up TCU for the south.

GO BIG RED PHYSICALITY!

Posted by: Country Husker on February 10, 2010 12:09PM CST
And by the way, apparently "damn" and "crap" are acceptable on the new "G Rated" blog, but still no "a$$."

Interesting view of the language by the LJS.

Country, thanks for posting.
I was tempted to start a conversation with myself there for a while.

There's gotta be some lunchtimers out there with an opinion on something, right?

Posted by: Country Husker on February 10, 2010 12:09PM CST
Heck, Exiled, I got lots of opinions, but I'm beginning to think they are all wrong.

Posted by: SuperHusker17 on February 10, 2010 12:20PM CST
The whole Mizzou thing is kinda funny to me. "Well we kinda suck in this conference but what if we try a different one? Then we'll look really good!" I could maybe see if they did go to the Big 10, a good first few years since they would be coming from the pass happy Big 12 but they don't have the defense for the Big 10's run game. I say let them leave so they can talk crap and be mediocore in another conference.

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on February 10, 2010 12:25PM CST
Both the Big1T1en and the Pac10 are looking to go to 12 teams now.
This could mean a major shakeup in the Big XII. That, and the possibility of a TV network are going to be very interesting in the next 5 years.

Posted by: Country Husker on February 10, 2010 12:36PM CST
The big 10 tv network was cited by some MU boosters as a reason to join up. Seems sort of thin to me, "well, they have thier own cable channel so, ooooooooo, isn't that cool."

This is a great view into the minds of MU fans and thier desire for coolness. Only problem with that is that they are in Missouri, and no matter how hard we try, we're just not that hip. Heck, we're in Missouri, for christ sakes.

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on February 10, 2010 12:40PM CST
If CU bolts for the Pac10+2 and MU bolts for the Big1Te1n+1, what does the Big XII do?

I would guess add TCU and Houston and switch the divisions to State of Texas and Not State of Texas.

There aren't many teams that geographically would fit in with the rest of the North (important for lesser sports that travel by bus/van)...maybe Arkansas or Tulsa, I guess.

Posted by: Country Husker on February 10, 2010 12:47PM CST
Yikes, Exiled, the north gets tougher with Okie and Okie State. I think we're ready though, so bring it on!

Like I said, I like Oklahoma in the north so we can renew the annual rivalry. Nebraska v. Oklahoma at Thanksgiving would return college football to proper order which will renew the faith of all Americans in the system and in turn, restore the economy and cure our political discourse.

Heck, let's kick MU out of the Big 12 so we can get started on the NU powered American recovery!

You know I wish I could learn to at least like basketball. The foul process is what just turns me off. Always want to see them knock the guy out 'the way and dunk it. Somebody sneezes or hiccups and a foul is called. Oh well, to each his own. At least baseball season is on the way. Preseason polls have Texas ranked first. That's just fine. Hope my boys make it to Omaha and then we will see "who flung the chunk". Oh, woe is me, I want football season to get going.

Do you really think that CU would bolt for the Pac 10? I would think it's not as bad but somewhat like Hawai'i being in the WAC, I don't think they want someone "that far away" Not that they can't travel but I would just kind of think that they would probably look for someone a little closer to the Coast. If they want to compete then let Boise in there. Boise's been choppin' at the bit to be taken serious, there's the first step. As for the other, I'm not sure, I just don't know if CU would really leave for that. They have a pretty low budget as it is, if they had to travel to the coast just to play conference games, that might drain them even more. Sorry, it's the future SID/AD in me that looks at that stuff.

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on February 10, 2010 1:17PM CST
SH17, CU geographically belongs in the MWC.
That's indisputable. See map here.

Pat Fisher and Larry Wilson. Those little runts sawed Everyone off at the knees. I watched them every chance I got. The great Lombardi Packer teams and no one I have seen since had the courage of either of those two players. They were tiny. Tough doesn't begin to describe them. I heard radio broadcasts of Fisher playing offense for the Huskers. Wish I could have seen a few of those games.

I personally be very suprized if the Big 10 brass would be interested in Mizzu. What does Mizzu offer to them other than some rich alums. The athletic program has little flash outside of Missuri. Not exactly a household word in Ohio for example. Pitt or the Cuse would be a much better fit for them. Both are competitive in Basketball and Pitt is on the verge of being a player in football.

This sounds like dreaming on the Mizzu side of the fence. And they could get a way from us in football and kansas in basketball.

Won't happen in my view.

Exiled_in_VT, Thanks for inquiring, yes the official day for beginning Lunar Calendar or Lantern Festival Holiday is Feb. 13th, now going towards 3:30 am Thurs. 11th. So close but Chinese celebrate the whole month, so fireworks by individuals, have begun somewhat and will intensify on 13th and after? Since Chinese, make the fireworks, they love to shoot them off over here, with lots partaking of it? So, all through the night, boom, boom, boom and so on, it drives you crazy over time?

Now, for Misery contemplating switching, and LCH's vision of OU and maybe Okie Lite, returning to the north division, I like also? Anytime, there can be a reunion, of annual contests, for the Big Red's, such as in the past at Thanksgiving, it would be fantastic, for both programs for exposure, and recruiting and legacy to the past?

I am concerned, that a leaving of Misery, and maybe a CU to Pac 10, in future would bring replacements, of two more TX teams, that would shift the balance of influence, in Big 12 moreso, to TX's way of thinking? Sorry Coach, don't mean to offend, but don't want, one state to have so much power, to a conference of midwest states, with less populations?

Yes, Busiekcreek, I know you're excited, for your boys of summer, in baseball, as they're always in that elite grouping now?

I do want to see our Big 12 administrators, working harder for Big 12, in contracting things of value, for the respective schools, and with a UT, that does offer some realtime considerations from TX, for media concerns as well? So like it or not, TX and some of the school sizes, gives us a little more star power, in the media's minds of coddling, to the ratings etc.?

Yes, time to wait for spring ball, and anticipation towards the next season, and all the excitement surely, that it will bring for Huskernation?

"Can you feel that blood and pain"? I got a rat, about an hour ago, I am sure it did before it died?

Misery offers the Big 10 more media markets (St. Lewie, KC) than others.

Pitt doesn't bring any more television sets to the Big 10 because Penn State folks are already watching Pitt and Penn State fans vastly outnumber Pitt fans in Pittsburgh and the rest of Pennsylvania.

Posted by: SuperHusker17 on February 10, 2010 2:08PM CST
Yeah, that article is interesting but I found it odd that they didn't take the time to change the article to make it correct and just made a side note about the NU vs OU thing and then the recruiting stuff too. I guess I stand corrected about the CU thing being a stretch for them to go to games but I think they should for sure add Boise and then maybe a toss up between CU, Utah, BYU and I'd even throw Fresno State in there. The are usually pretty competitive in football and obviously won a CWS two years ago so that'd work in with baseball for them. I know CU would be the higher profile school but I guess I'm maybe still just not sold on them truly doing any better out there than in the Big 12

more Pac10 expansion speculation

The Big 10 should eye Notre Dame first and foremost, but since that ain't happenin' they're going to fall back on Mizzou, Pitt, 'Cuse, and NJ State (Rutgers).
Mizzou probably makes the most sense of any of those.

Colorado doesn't fit in anywhere--except in the MWC where they obviously belong, but they don't want to take that step downwards. It's in their best interest to stick with the Big XII and use the Pac 10 offers to negotiate some retention bonus money or something.

The Pac 10 is already a sprawling conference (know how far it is from Seattle to LA?). Maybe they'd take San Diego State and UNLV off of the MWC's hands and Colorado and Boise would jump into the MWC and make it that much stronger...

Posted by: Wrestler on February 10, 2010 2:21PM CST
Exciled, ND is a national draw for catholics across the nation? I think, don't know for sure, but feel in FB, Rockne and such that going to a league would hurt their fan support across the land making them more regional? In other sports BBall the joining to a conference was a good decision? But football and independent and appeal to entire nation is what they choose, and to others dismay they are the one school that can do it? GBR! Zhou Da Hong! GB12! Zhou Da Shier! Not meaning the only school but one that can do it with the success level obtained?

Posted by: SuperHusker17 on February 10, 2010 2:24PM CST
Well put Ex, I agree with you. I have to say that my 2nd team is Notre Dame and it's mostly because of their tradition in the past and I think that's their excuse for not joining a conference. They do play a lot of teams every single year like the USC's, Michigan's, Michigan State's, Boston College, Navy, that they have all these trophies that you never really hear about anymore. I like the idea that they do play all these teams because of the tradition but there are some years where the rest of their schedule is pretty cake. So it would be nice to see them in an actual conference to gain some respect again but will they ever do it? I'm not sure, and I don't know exactly what it would take for them to join. A few losing seasons? I dunno. It'd be nice to finally see them in a conference but oh well.

Wrestler, ND has their own TV contract and own carve-outs in the BCS agreement that give them so ridiculously much money, they'd be crazy to join a conference unless their level of success on the field fell to that of Army or Navy for a sustained period of time and NBC decided not to renew their TV deal.

Posted by: drivebyposter on February 10, 2010 2:28PM CST
from seattle to boulder it is 1300 miles

from seattle to tucson it is 1550 miles

Colorado in MWC? In the last decade the corn would fit nicely with the WAC... Based on performance

Actually the corn should go independent like ND

Posted by: SuperHusker17 on February 10, 2010 2:30PM CST
Well yeah, I suppose the money doesn't hurt that they get from all the BCS stuff. Maybe Kelly will bring new hope??? I doubt it if he can't even stay at his school for their own BCS game when they were undefeated.

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on February 10, 2010 2:36PM CST
dbp,

Like I said, CU to MWC would be a step down in competition for them...unless they could convince the Pac10 to take SDSU/UNLV, prompting Boise to jump WAC-->MWC.

Then, the MWC could be:
Boise St.
Colorado
Utah
BYU
Air Force
Colorado St.
Wyoming
New Mexico

Not a bad conference--certainly as good as the Big East...

Posted by: Wrestler on February 10, 2010 2:37PM CST
Exiled, I agree with you 100 percent about ND, some on here clamor for them, joining a conference and sharing revenues in bowls like others, but why?

For them, it would be a foolish mistake of huge proportions, to where they are today? Yes, have they slipped of course, but not because, of lack of funds? They will find their coach someday, with monies and climb back up again?

Universities, are big businesses, driven by successful sports programs, in lots of ways, ND its FB and the appeal to so many? Conference for FB, at this pt. in time, is not even in consideration?

Better! I have to agree with Mountain Man there are some salty teams in that listing Exiled? Very good teams that can play with the best of them across the nation? That would be an impressive conference? Oh and Puffs would have to play AFA, they would hate that one?

exile

but they would need 4 more teams to have a conference championship. It is all about the money and that is what is driving this

Pac 10 adds the denver/boulder market and the salt lake city/utah market

Missouri is stuck in the "big Texas" conference along with the corn.

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on February 10, 2010 2:48PM CST
dbp,

I understand all of this and can't really find an optimal solution for the Pac10.

I'm actually kind of hoping this might lead to the dissolution of the Big XII...or DONU to the Big Ten...

Posted by: PT Husker on February 10, 2010 2:48PM CST
Is the BCS pushing the Big10/Pac10 to add a conference playoff, or is it strictly the addl revenue that game would bring to the conference table?

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on February 10, 2010 2:50PM CST
and driveby, I'm not trying to disparage CU by saying they should be in the MWC...

I'm just saying that if you base it only on geography, it's obvious CU should be in the MWC. Of course, geography is not the only factor...or else Iowa would be in the Big XII North instead of CU.

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on February 10, 2010 2:51PM CST
PT,

It's strictly money-grubbing by the individual conferences.

Posted by: SuperHusker17 on February 10, 2010 2:51PM CST
I would think more than anything it's people wanting a playoff. It would be better if each of the big 6 had a championship game to help make up the bracket. I would think that the BCS wouldn't mind if it stayed the way it did. Or maybe that's just how I see it

Posted by: drivebyposter on February 10, 2010 2:55PM CST
The dissolution of the "big texas conference" would be acceptable.

PT, it is all about "show me the money" and the real or perceived prestege. CU as a research institution is rated in the top schools in the country. Rest of the big 12 north, not so much.

The pac 10 tried to get em before. Now with the "big texas conference" screwing the rest, it is time for CU to become part of the pac 12.

Posted by: PT Husker on February 10, 2010 2:57PM CST
The BCS may feel that, with A CCG for each of the 6 member conferences it legitimizes their picks a bit more. somehow I feel that the 2 "Idependant" groups are joined at the hip. Every thing they do is benificial for the other.

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on February 10, 2010 2:58PM CST
I think if CU or MU were to leave the Big XII, the obvious dream candidates to replace them would be Arkansas and Minnesota. Of course, I don't think either would leave their current situation.

Posted by: PT Husker on February 10, 2010 3:01PM CST
But, Can they afford it Drive. Perhaps the Revenue sharing would be a gain for them over the Big 12. But I doubt it. And If two member institutions get some sanctions in the next few years, what does that do to the revenue stream?

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on February 10, 2010 3:02PM CST
on conference championship games:

the only data I can find is that the SEC's 2007 game brought in $13 million in revenue and cost less than 2 million to put on.
So the profits for a conference championship game are approximately $1 million per year per team in the conference.

That's why conferences want the games. MORE MONEY. They don't care if it crowns a more or less worthy champion or is part of a de facto playoff or anything. People shovel tons of cash to attend and televise the games, so they want to put them on.

Posted by: Huskerzone on February 10, 2010 3:05PM CST
The exchanging MU and CU for TCU and Houston entices me a little. Houston is better than CU. TCU is better than MU in football. Houston has the history of Phi Slamma Jamma in basketball, but not sure how they've done since. TCU would take over as being probably the worst team in the Big 12 in basketball. The Big 12 being Texas (South) and non-Texas (North) doesn't matter at Texas controls the Big 12 anyways. Would TCU join the Big 12 to risk end up going 7-5 or 6-6 or stay where they are to always have a chance to end up undefeated until they play a real team in a bowl game?

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on February 10, 2010 3:06PM CST
Here's the income statement for UNL athletics:

Not exactly on subject, but you can see how football money is needed to pay for the rifle team's bus trips.

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on February 10, 2010 3:08PM CST
Zone,
Problem is adding more Texas schools doesn't add many more TV eyeballs since most people in Houston and the Metroplex already follow Big XII football.

Same with adding Tulsa--OU and Okie Lite already get every TV in the state.

Posted by: bigred-Ore on February 10, 2010 3:10PM CST
The problem with the concept of Mizzou/St. Louis-KC market, Colo/Boulder -Denver market or even Rutgers/New Jersey-New York markets is they are looking at markets not market shares. ........NO ONE IS WATCHING....These are pro markets. The Buffs hardly ever sell out their own stadium, Mizzou has yet to do it on a regular basis and almost every year Mizzou gets passed over for a bowl they probably deserve and relegated to a lesser bowl because bowl people know Mizzou people will not travel to support their team. And as much as I would love to jam on the Buffalos I am not when I say I believe they would be better off in the MWC. They simply do not have the money nor the dedication to college athletics to survive in the B12. Case in point; they are forced to keep a coach that they (and their fan base) would love to dismiss because they simply cannot afford to fire him. JMO

Posted by: Huskerzone on February 10, 2010 3:12PM CST
Very true exiled, but what other state would join the Big 12. Arkansas has no interest, they want to remain SEC. LSU probably the same (Busie may have a better ear on that). New Mexico State or New Mexico please! Colorado State? possibly. Iowa and/or Minnesota would seem the only other possible viable teams.

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on February 10, 2010 3:15PM CST
Zone, you left off Air Force and Memphis, but yeah...that's why I see the Big XII falling apart if these defections happen.

Posted by: Wrestler on February 10, 2010 3:20PM CST
Exile, great thinking again its about adding that adds to your media market ratings of appeal? Mn. and Arkansas would enhance media ratings, if not Arkansas, how about Memphis so so in football but good in Bball and it would have both states of Arkansas and TN following to some degree, also would gives us exposure for recruiting into SEC country?
If not MN. how about Cincinnati, better in FB now and good in Bball most years, and puts us in Ohio and we garner media attention from Big 10 country? Memphis and Cincinnati not just their programs but where they both are located and what that opens up for exposure? Just a thought? Benefit to all programs in Big 12 for recruiting markets?

DBP, spent a little time with my better half, I think you can understand?

The last 5 years have been hard on the buffs. but the previous ten were quite good.

The issue from my perspective is that in giving up the big 8 to Texas was a larget mistake then and now.

CU to the pac ten is a perfect fit. There are tons of cu alumni on the west coast. In fact lots of californicators live in Colorado

The current football issues of CU should not be confused with the big picture. CU was invited previously because of more reasons than they were dominating the big 8 at the time in football.

As stated in the article posted by exile, this move all starts with CU

Posted by: Huskerzone on February 10, 2010 3:25PM CST
Minnesota would be a good get for the Big 12. Lydon Murtha country. They grow their boys big up there. Cold as a witches upper torso though.

Posted by: Huskerzone on February 10, 2010 3:27PM CST
What is odd DBP is that it was the SWC that folded leaving SMU, TT, TAM, Houston, UT etc looking for a conference. 4 join the Big 8 to make the Big 12. The Big 8 made a deal with the devil and got burned.

Posted by: Wrestler on February 10, 2010 3:30PM CST
If Big 10 is interested in Misery and markets such as St. Louis and KC, and recruiting into Big 12 country, Big 12 should do the reverse and look into infringing on Big 10 country with programs and exposure and enhancing their future prospects? I read where Ohio lost a lot of their top prospects to other programs out of state? A little dissatisfied with OSU and its appeal? Michigan is down and they used to steal away? Why not Big 12 teams launching a Cincinnati into the league for direct competition for athletes in their populated states of appeal? GBR! Zhou Da Hong! GB12! Zhou Da Shier! When battling with other conferences don't give up and look elsewhere, fight fire with fire concept?

Gable went to Iowa to coach after wrestling at ISU and built their progam up by recruiting prospects earmarked for Big 8 and then not only did Iowa get good but the whole Big 10 conference followed along? We should do the same in FB in reverse against the Big 10 getting more aggressive on their turf?

Minnesota's rivalries with Wisconsin, Iowa, and Michigan are too strong for them to consider leaving, in my opinion.

Of course, I'd be fine with us losing our Big XII North rivalries to move to the Big 10 and then schedule OU non-conf every year...

All of you are missing the pt., if TV exposure for Big 12 games were now broadcast more frequently in Ohio, because of Cincinnati, NU would have a heyday for recruiting in Ohio, kids now tuned into big 12 play and wanting to play TX and OK and Memorial and Lincoln now has as strong of appeal to some degree, than horseshoe in Columbus?

If Memphis and TV games of Big 12 to Arkansas and TN. kids would now like Lincoln and Norman and other locations in Big 12 from getting connected to the more frequent exposure? Maybe some of them, choose Big 12 programs over alternative choices, for other schools in SEC? It works, exposure not to just the instate program, but all the programs in that specific conference?

GBR! Zhou Da Hong! GB12! Zhou Da Shier!

Building up Big 12, for expansion into other areas for recruiting and media exposure, is the way to go, not the desire to runaway? Just my opinion!

TomOS, got to disagree, and I am OU and Okie all my life? OU respects its legacy with NU, ESPN had a thing about how rivalry and admiration for both progams and fans so different than others, and yearns for it as well, on annual basis? OU loves to hate UT, and fans, as they inturn, do us? So your vastly wrong, in your thoughts towards OU and its attitude of NU, in general?

As evidenced, in reunion of 71 game two seasons ago, in Norman, OU lost that game, as it doesn't matter? And this season, the connection to former Heismans in Lincoln. Barry got a huge ovation at Memorial? OU's legacy with NU, runs much deeper and greater than UT, you must be fairly young, not to appreciate what the two have together?

DBP
Your points are well taken and actually seem to agree with my thoughts. The Buffs really have no solid "local" fan base and seem to lack for boosters willing to pony up for facilities etc. and my comments were not directed at merely the football program, but an overall indifference to the success of their universities athletic departments across all sports. The entertainment dollar in Colo. is spread out b/t the Broncos, Nuggets, Rockies, etc and there doesn't seem to be enough loyalty either local or distant from boosters or alumni to correct the problem. My point was merely to state that barring correcting this issue somehow the cost of doing business in the MWC is simply more in line with what CU seems willing to put out vs. the B12 or even Pac 10.

I do agree with your assessment that CU would be an excellent fit in the Pac 10 in alot of ways just not sure that it "cures the desease" if you will.

I know that it would never happen but if CU and Mizzou were to go then the only way to save the B12 (imo) would be to pull OU and OSU into the North and add TCU and Somebody to the South. Of course there would have to be considerations made to preserve the Red River Shootout.

I guess my point is if... OU had to decide between a game every year, JMO ...they would pick UT over NU.. if conference changes would take place...

Posted by: PT Husker on February 10, 2010 4:16PM CST
this has been a very interesting discussion that seems to be gaining momentum in the two conferences. It would appear that it will come to a head first in the Big 10 which will kind of force the hand of the pac 10. Hopefully the integrety of the Big 12 is not comprimised.

If you look at the geographic Neighbors there are few likely candidates out side of the State of Texas.

Not sure what if anything can be done but IMO we need to keep the raiders at bay.

DONU - in the Pac 10. I grew up in NE. I used to joke that the NE Coast Gaurd trained on the Platte. (No disrespect intended to the services at all ever) The point we are the furthest thing from a coastal school there could be. Not sure I care about CU leaving (wondering if Boise could be and option to fill their spot?) But I'm against MU leaving. Unfortunately, I am living there until I get back to NE and would hate to loose the B12 coverage (especially football) to the boring B10.

I agree with you PT, is Misery and CU, two of my favorite programs, to cheer on in Big 12, no! But, I still don't want to see our conference, compromised by the likes of Pac 10 and Big 10, also?

So, I think we have the stronger conference, in so many ways, that I don't think our members, should be looking elsewhere?

But if you're a program struggling, in the current times of course, you look for options, of enhancing your university's revenues? Instead of doing the more difficult task, of building your program up, in the conference it currently resides in?

Such is life in America, nowdays, sometimes?

Today is the 11th Thurs. and tomorrow is the 12th Friday evening, Spring Festival or Lantern Festival or Lunar Calendar Holiday (called by many names) our New Year's Eve in China, as official holiday, starts Sat. 13th and goes officially for four days running. 13th through 16th. But for most Chinese, all of Feb. will be celebrated somewhat? We will commence school before mainland China does, with students there taking off more time, until beginning of March?

New Year's Eve Friday night, we will have a large feast at a restaurant, of our choice, with family and friends, reserving a private room, for dining as custom? The meal represents a "chi wen hua", or "the culture of eating". Afterwards from meal, as in China you sit at large circular table, with a lazy susan glass on top of table and individual foods placed on glass, and you spin around to take what you desire?

A large screen TV will be in the private room, for us to watch until close to midnight for programs ushering in the New Year, year of the "Tiger", and then we will go and watch the fireworks displayed at mdnight at the Harbor. We will toast for many things, during the dinner, and I am sure some of the toasts, will be made for GF/KW and myself's, pending marriate coming soon? The toasting part is going to be tough for me, as Chinese men like to toast with baijiu, a very strong white wine type of drink that is like a vodka, but stronger taste to it? I have to do that at our wedding dinner as well, in this summer to come? So many bathroom trips for me, and thinking the results in bathroom, will remind of my making wt. days at last moment for weighins?
