Schnellenberger's high praise for Bo
Posted by: Steve Sipple on September 5, 2009 at 11:33PM CST

Wrapping up Nebraska's 49-3 season-opening victory over Florida Atlantic:

-- Never thought the Owls would score only three points. I figured they'd get three TDs.

-- Schnellenberger praised Pelini, saying, "I think it's a team that has about the best coach that I've been around lately."

"I think they have some very good players, but I don't think they're overly talented," Schnellenberger added (and this stuff is very interesting to me). "I think the sum of the parts is a lot greater than the individual talent they have, and that's a compliment, it's not to take anything away from them.

"They play hard, they run hard, they block hard, they tackle hard, and they're a very physical football team. I'm sure they went into halftime concerned about how they had looked against us. They put it into overdrive, and I asked our guys to put it into overdrive, and we didn't have enough juice in the tank."

-- I agree with Schnellenberger regarding Pelini. Nebraska has taken on the personality of its coach. Generally no-nonsense. Aggressive. Demanding. Alert.

-- The Huskers' mood in the postgame interview session was interesting. They were upbeat, but not overly so. They obviously expect a lot from themselves.

-- I think we can agree that Nebraska's overall speed and athleticism has improved on defense. I really like the explosiveness that Sean Fisher and Will Compton, in particular, bring to the defense. Great to see Blake Lawrence come back from his concussion issues with a six-tackle performance.

-- Nebraska had only 12 picks last year (as if you need to be reminded). So getting two was obviously a very good start. But no sacks?

-- Nice to see Rickey Thenarse burst out of the starting gate with a team-leading eight tackles . . . Suh was a beast most of the night, as expected . . . Redshirt freshman DT Baker Steinkuhler played quality minutes off the bench and had five stops . . . Boy, does true freshman backer Eric Martin ever play with intensity . . . Dejon Gomes has some serious closing speed . . . Didn't see much from Colton Koehler (one tackle) and saw nothing from Phillip Dillard . . . Matt O'Hanlon showed great athleticism on the pick that was scratched because of the roughing-the-passer penalty.

-- Tough to get a great read on true freshman QB Cody Green at that point in the game, but he showed the impressive athleticism that his coaches have been talking about. By the way, now that he's played, Green will be available for interviews. He has a great presence about him for a freshman. Very precocious.

-- Anybody surprised they put Latravis Washington in for a few snaps at the end?

-- Enough for now.

Sorry, I have to keep returning to that one sentance..."I think they have some very good players, but I don't think they're overly talented." I just don't quite agree with that. Sorry Howard, a well coached team, with just OK talent would have won a close game with you.

Great game for Zac Lee, Burkhead, Roy Helu and the rest of the team.

Was a good game, just listened to it, but the team sounded pretty sharp, up a level or so from what they were at the beginning of last year.

yea, like Suh isnt talented. we have alot of talent AND the best coach(es) in the USA!

Conversely, FAU prolly has some talent since they are a FL team, but have crap for an HC. I think Schnell is scamming that school big time, just collecting a pay check.

Our schedule is kind of hard to judge now. Alabama had a huge day on offense against Virginia Tech! I still think we're going to do very well against Arkansas St. next week, mainly because I can see our defensive line stopping a power running team.

Schnellenberger is just talking about getting the max potential out of your team. Nebraska has good talent, but we don't have as much talent as OU, Texas, OK State... maybe not even Missouri, after seeing them today... But we're gonna play with those teams because Pelini's a beast. That's what Schnellenberger was getting at, I think. Schnellenberger was also ticked because he didn't feel he got the best out of his team today.

Bought PPV and am re watching the game on the DVR. Am seeing great potential in the linebackers. The sacks will come we just had to let the new and inexperienced players wet their feet. Now next game I am predicting a couple sacks on my PPV purchase.

HELU WAS A BEAST in the 3rd. Thought B-Rex was equally impressive. LEE looked real good except for that one bonehead pick he threw.

FAU coach = Impressive stash but not so impressive assessment about our talent level.

Go Big Red!

Go Big red.

I figured FAU had some pretty good talent, but they didn't produce much.

One interesting observation from the highlights. I didn't see the game in real time, but was suprised that when Schnellengerger got clobbered on the sidelines that it was red jerseys helping him up and not one FAU player in the vicinity to help their coach.

I remember one of our coaches saying the fans would be impressed by our players strength development.

Count me as one of them. O'hanlon and Amukamura looked like beasts, as examples.

Go Big Biceps! Nice job Dobson.

Front four pressure was good at times, but they held more players in for pass protection. That is even hard to stunt. Young LB's in their first game, Carl was letting play without putting more pressure on them. Smith was good at dumping the pass off too, sometime early.

I really expected more points from a talented FAU team Smelly. Your all american QB ect were held in check by some pretty "average" players!!!!

Three points. I was predicting you would score 21 or more.

Bo has this defense improved this year and we are more talented this year.

I know it is the first game, but I feel pretty good about the team. It could have been even worse if it werent for mistakes and dropped interceptions. Asante could have 10 career picks if he could catch the ball.

Just as no nothing said, I too am not surprised that LT got some snaps. He deserved them. This kid moved to QB at the request of his coaches for the betterment of the team. LT did this without blinking. Good for him that he got some snaps, good for the coaches to step up and reward him for what he did.

Biggest disappointment to me in an overall good performance was the false starts. That is concentration and has to improve.

Bo did not have the play book open very far on either side of the ball. Increase in speed is apparent. Especially on D. Nice first step guys.

Hard to understand why some people are taking offense to a compliment of our coaching staff? HS is not saying NU is void of talent, just that the talent level is not of past NU caliber.

It will be interesting to see what these same people say if and when the first loss rolls around.

Overall, I liked what I saw. You can see the beginnings of a quality team starting to form. Even though it was just FAU, you can see the potential of many a player.

Two stats particularly stood out to me: Of the 17 completions only two had to go to the RBs. To me this means Zac was throwing down field and not just dumping the ball off. This will be help our running game.

On defense, 25 different guys had a tackle. 15 of which recorded at least 3 tackles. This shows our defense is much more than just Suh.

Go Big Red

Good post Nostra, I agree that what Howard said was prolly spot on. Obvious to me that, with our youth and continued good recruiting it will just get better. This team has a shot at being really good because of Bo and his ability to get the most out of what he has.

A word for James Dobsen as well. The strength and speed of this team is noticeably better.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on September 6, 2009 11:37AM CST
The Dobsen comment is good to hear. That is "key" for this program to get back to where it once was. NU was the trend setter in this area for a long long time. We must get back to that.

On the talent issue: Schnellenberger was clearly making a backhanded compliment, but he's not wrong.

If you disagree, ask yourself how many NU players would start for USC? Or Florida? How about Texas or OU? Suh, Helu, and...that's about it. Those are the teams with the elite football talent, folks, and if NU wants to compete with the big boys again, those are the schools it must compare itself to.

NU has above-average talent right now, but it's not at the elite level yet. However, I think Nebraska does have an elite coaching staff, which can get the most out of the players we have, and hopefully bring in some top-tier players as well.

Well said festus.
