Saban tactic not Pelini's style
Posted by: Steve Sipple on February 21, 2012 at 10:01PM CST

Perhaps you've heard about Alabama's rather bizarre recruiting tactic.

The Tide recently sent four-star RB Alvin Kamara, a talented prospect from Norcross, Ga., 105 letters -- in one day.

"Yea it was 1 days worth of mail!" Kamara said via Twitter. "I was shocked!! I didn't even know they could do that."

According to Yahoo! Sports, there were so many letters that they were overflowing out of the mailbox and onto the ground. Kamara scooped up all the mail, spread it on a table, took a couple pictures with it and then saved the lot in a shoebox.

On Tuesday, I asked Nebraska coach Bo Pelini about the recruiting tactic. He declined comment because he likes and respects Alabama coach Nick Saban. But I'm guessing such a maneuver isn't Bo's style.

Here's one issue I have: If you send 105 letters to one recruit in one day, what sort of message does that send to the rest of the players you're recruiting? Should you also send them 105 letters?

Or am I being a fuddy-duddy?

I also asked Pelini how coaches, during the recruiting process, go about assessing a prospect's toughness. See his answer in a Wednesday column.

A Yahoo! Sports photo of Kamara...

Junk mail is junk mail.

That Bama elephant has junk in his trunk.

Was it on Valentines Day...I think that's the real story here.

I'm thinking each player on the team and the coaches each made him cards little hand drawn hearts and lipstick kisses.

Oh Alvin Kamara won't you be mine, please be my Valanetne.

Hugs n kisses, and sweet Alabama wishes

Your Bama mama

Completely agree with Sip.

I think it's a stupid tactic, and Saban is a tool.

Glad that Bo is above that kind of garbage.

A lot of good trees died for that junk mail....

Make light of it, but I'll bet the kid goes to Alabama. At least Saban is trying and (pardon the pun) pushing the envelope. Face it, NU could use some 5 star talent to compensate for the lack of an offensive game plan week after week after week. Maybe a guy like this could grab a wobbly pass or pitch from TM and run it 90 yards.

Nish- good one

This has to be a secretarial mistake.

It is sooooo gimmicky.

Recruits want to believe that they can trust the people recruiting them. How does a gimmick help that?

Also, this is Alabama. They don't need stupid gimmicks.

My take: Form letters were going out to 105 different targets. The secretary is using some sorting program to put names in the letters and on the labels. By accident, this kid gets all the letters that were intended for him and 104 other targets.

I wonder if theres anything in Any of those envelopes about what does this young man want to pursue a degree in? What does he see himself doing when, or if Football does not become his career! Anyone who would stoop to such juvenile antics to recruit a player is a CLOWN! Wheres the Integrity at? Im Glad Coach Pelini has the Class, and Integrity not too stoop too this level! Does Saban give the Kid 105 copies when he takes his Scholarship to give to someone else when he Over-recruits the next Year? Classless! SEC is the new SWC! GBR!!!

This whole thing has me lmao- look at the kid's face- uh...let this never happen at nu...but it's a great laugh to go to sleep with.

Nah. Not buying it.

This happened because someone couldn't combine lists in computer program.

Think about it. Why 105 letters and not 100? Which is more likely, 105 has some secret, special meaning to the recruit or that is the number of targeted recruits on a list?

This is probably the work of a coach or student trying to send out a mass form letter.

It is easy to always believe the worst of Alabama. But my money is on honest mistake.

Even Bo, or especially Bo is not satisfied with his recruiting effort. Why else would he have hired an outside consulting firm to evaluate his approach to recruits? Well, that is the first step in problem solving, to admit that there is a problem.

Wouldn't it just be easier to hire assistant coaches who can recruit? There must be an honest broker somewhere who can sell the program. Just getting a committment would be nice, without the usual, "Well, think it over and discuss everything before making a final decision, take your time, check all the other schools out first, and if you still want to come to Nebraska, Great!"

The complexity of the psycho analysis used by the consulting firm sounds a bit like Dr. Osborne's Psychology 101 class. How can anyone believe what any high school student has in the back of his mind? They don't even know, themselves, what they want as we have observed from all of our decommittments in the recent past. Just ask Blaine and Tyler.

Well, we have one committment for 2013. Let's go for 2.

it sounds like the outside consultants will be helping with better, more efficient... target marketing, or...the identification process of sorting, sifting and screening whom our coaches should be spending their time with... of course i could be completely wrong. GBR

The Sip...any idea if anyone else in the B1G is utilizing this cutting edge professional service ??

Posted by: [gofor2] on February 22, 2012 1:35AM CST
I just woke up and I am settling back to sleep.

Saw the Sip article. Kudos to Bo. I will say more tomorrow. But I have been very vocal about recruiting, repeatedly. Really liked what Bo was saying. Loved it, actually. GBR!

Now back to sleep.

Posted by: Wrestler on February 22, 2012 2:19AM CST
Los, I don't think you're wrong? Cutting edge is a good way to describe it?

As a Business Prof, I always marvel at the need for outside consultants to firms or businesses for constructive methods, that sometimes a organization can't seem to do from an internal aspect?

So A for effort, on Coach Bo's attempt at enhancement?

Sabin is Sabin? Garnering some number ones in recruiting for last 5 years or so, well it's hard to criticize I guess? I suppose if Hawkins at CU had won a couple of NC's, all would be sending pizza boxes for the recruiting also?

With Bama's success and approach of the 105 letters sent, does this mean that if others copy Sabin's tactics, that it will qualify for a D1 FB subsidy for the Postal Service?

"don't put the cart before the horse"
I think that would apply for D1 FB subsidy for Gov't, wouldn't it?

Sort of a inverse relationship to Lee Iacocca's "Chrysler Bail-Out" situation?

Go Pot Bellied Pigs!

Remember season pending will be mutually exclusive of season past?

GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

Bo could kick Nick's butt in a bar fight. Also Urban's.

That much mail circulating from AL Abama should alert homeland security, I would think.

Posted by: stuckin tx on February 22, 2012 6:20AM CST
I expect 105 letters a day usually don't get mailed out of Alabama.

Posted by: atskooc on February 22, 2012 7:07AM CST
when was the last time a nebraska recruiting story made news in alabama?

saban knows what he's doing. questioning the man's judgement when it comes to recruiting and selling his program, especially given what he's done in the past 10 years in college football, is silly. i wish pelini recruited like saban.

So.....the only Gump who can count higher than 10 apparently gets confused when reaching three digits.

"100........105...........whatever it takes."

Posted by: Country Husker on February 22, 2012 7:44AM CST
"Coach.........coach...........what comes after 99?"

"How the heck should I know? Just send 'em another 5 or 6."

Posted by: Denver Bob on February 22, 2012 8:02AM CST
This just in........

"In a bold move, the University of Nebraska announced today that the entire campus and athletic facilities will be moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Nebraska residents will remain eligible for in-state tuition in addition to Ohio residents. At press time, no Regents could be reached for comment, but informed sources say that this unusual action was taken to improve the institution's athletic recruiting footprint."

GBR! ;0)

Denver, wouldn't you think we would learn from Lebron and take our campus talents to South Beach, with satellite campuses in Houston, Phoenix, and La Jolla, maybe share space with Cal-SD so we can also get some of the best international talent in advanced biology, maybe help out that Innov Campus too?

Posted by: mike5790 on February 22, 2012 8:36AM CST
I'm willing to be patient with Bo as long as he continues to attempt to improve, he doesn't jump the shark with the perception or real anger issue on field, and he returns that loyalty to Neb and doesn't jump ship the first chance he gets after a championship season (although, that last one, if you think about it is a moot point on my part). I imagine that the "counseling" Sip talks about in his article isn't from recruiting specialists per se, but with communication experts, the kinds of people that train HR types with getting the most out of job interviews. I think a few folks are pretty astute in the thinking it was a mass-mailing error, and if indeed that is what it was, their SEC brethren should eat that up and use it against Alabama... come to XYZ U... where you're not just a number... not just a line in someone's database...

mike5790.........

Until I saw your post, I was just goofing around. My God, your suggestion is brilliant!!

We can do this - Ray in Bellevue will help.

I agree this was probably some kind of mistake. Sending that much at once to one kid is just as likely to annoy him as impress. It would be awkward if nothing else. Athletes egos are big enough without stuffing mailboxes to impress them.

As for Bo bringing in consultants- it's good to know he's willing to get an outside view on their methods. It's one way to improve in an area that hasn't been his strength. Now if he can keep working on keeping that temper under control...

Posted by: Country Husker on February 22, 2012 12:45PM CST
CB,
Like I said, gumps can't count. They thought they sent 3.

Either that, or Saban told a room full of people "We ought to send that kid a letter" and all 105 of them jumped up and did it.

Denver Bob

As Valley would say, where's the money?

Posted by: Mark still in Denver on February 22, 2012 1:48PM CST
The real slimmy tactic is OVERSIGNING. As long as the SEC schools get to do it, and sign 10+ more players per year than they are supposed to, they will continue to win NC's. Duh. They get to cut their weakest 10 players every summer. It sucks and I'm very proud the BIG doesn't allow it.

They should just form their own semi-pro league, pay their signing bonuses OVER the table, sign all the players they want, and the rest of the country can play COLLEGE football.
