Blast from the past: Barry Sanders v. Huskers
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on March 10, 2010 at 10:06AM CST
I know this week is mostly about Husker basketball, but it's now just two weeks until spring football.

In anticipation, here's Sipple and I providing some safety tips. And if you can still stand the sight of us after that, here we are giving a little Big 12 spring preview.

*****

As you know, during the slow season I'll sometimes post "Blast from the Past" moments in Husker history. Today, we remember a game 22 years ago when Oklahoma State and Barry Sanders hung 42 on Nebraska and still lost by three touchdowns.

Steve Taylor was awesome that day. So was Barry, on his way to the Heisman Trophy. Gotta love how he just flips the football to the official after each venture into the end zone.

Also present is a young Mike Gundy, long before 40.

Wow PT you were there...... was that a home game then? Ahhhhh the Big Eight..... I miss those days.

Posted by: RockHusker on March 10, 2010 10:37AM CST
Hey Step will be mad....no Bam. I never did understand it, but I just went with the flow. Which I should not do that either. darned if you do darned if you don't

Posted by: RockHusker on March 10, 2010 10:38AM CST
PT - did you get my message in your inbox?

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on March 10, 2010 10:38AM CST
Barry Sanders' junior season was the most statistically impressive season in modern NCAA history.
I got sick when people compared Reggie Bush to Barry. Barry's worst game his final year was as good as any of Reggie's best games. And I'm not making that up.

Check out the stats here

I'm not sure which game was his worst, but I guess one where he only scored 2 TDs...

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on March 10, 2010 10:39AM CST
2 weeks until spring practice for the Huskers.
I'm excited.

Posted by: RockHusker on March 10, 2010 10:40AM CST
I had always hoped when Barry retired that he might somehow end up in KC with the Chiefs, at that time all they needed was a good RB to make a run in the playoffs

Posted by: RockHusker on March 10, 2010 10:42AM CST
Ex ..... yes I hate these dead periods after signing day until spring ball. Then the summer dead period. Spring ball should be interesting.

Posted by: drivebyposter on March 10, 2010 10:43AM CST
He PT,

I know you will be excited about this. The Buffs are favored to win another national championship this weekend

Go big ski team.

Trash how is your bowling team doing this year?

I heard the General is ahead of schedule on the rehab.

go big general

Posted by: drivebyposter on March 10, 2010 10:45AM CST
Also PT

Snow on the way.

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on March 10, 2010 10:45AM CST
It's not often that an athlete is that much better than his peers the way Barry was. If you took a person who'd never seen football before and had them watch one game, they'd immediately be able to tell you Barry was the best.
I'd compare it to Shaun White in the Olympics. I don't follow snowboarding and don't quite get why a double McTwisty corkscrew 1260 is so awesome...but when Shaun did his thing, all I could say was, "Wow, that guy is head and shoulders above those other putzes."

Posted by: PT Husker on March 10, 2010 10:50AM CST
Rock, Got your message and replyed.

And yup it was awesome. Best individual performance I think I ever saw. Gale Sayers was another. And Dante Culpepper who also almost beat us.

I know I am old.

Hey Ex, I'm probably going to sound a little stupid but I was trying to make a link clickable like your's above but couldn't figure it out. Any ideas for help?

Posted by: RockHusker on March 10, 2010 10:51AM CST
DBP - No snow please..... had all I can take for a season

Posted by: Trashman on March 10, 2010 10:54AM CST
DBP

My bowling team disbanded about 4 years ago. However, I went out on top indivudually winning the $100 year-end tourney. We were very good at being induced bowlers. I'm sure that's what you were asking.

The General is actually behind in rehab, so I took this as an opportunity to invite him to our water aerobics class for strength building.

He declined saying the coaches have actually switched his throwing arm to lefty so his strength is not as necessary as quickly. They told him it was what was best for the team to win and would at least "give him a shot" to beat out the unbelievable Green.

Evidently the tackling dummies have not figured this crafty maneuver out by Watson and are picking off much less passes. He was only sacked twice thus far by them as well........

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on March 10, 2010 10:56AM CST
dbp, my alma mater is undefeated heading into Steamboat Springs and the championship this weekend.
Eastern teams don't tend to fare too well out west, though.

PT - I have tried to reach out to Busiecreek but to no avail. I guess maybe people don't check Inbox much. I have a book that I would like to send and have it go to different blog members who can read it (sign it) then send it on to another blog member. I tried one member who politely declined. The book has very little to do with the title and much more to do with football and the midwest in general.

SH17,

Here's a site that shows the HTML code needed.

Otherwise, if you are using Firefox, you can just hit CTRL+U (or go to View: Page Source) and it will show you the code for the entire page you're viewing. Do that here, and you can search for my post (CTRL+F and then type a word near the link you want to look at).

Rock, What are the locals, or at least the intelligent ones, saying about Gill?

Posted by: RockHusker on March 10, 2010 11:01AM CST
IE: How nany people knew Iowa was the cornhuskers first, they decided they didn't like that and went for Hawkeyes and the Bugeaters went for the Cornhuskers. I also didn't know we were known by so many names over the years. I am glad Iowa gave up Cornhuskers.

Posted by: RockHusker on March 10, 2010 11:02AM CST
PT - Gill is starting to charm everybody here now. They call him "genuine" we all knew that already. I am actually scared how good he will probably make the Jayhawks

Posted by: SuperHusker17 on March 10, 2010 11:03AM CST
Thanks guy, just trying to spare everyone from long url links when I actually do find something

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on March 10, 2010 11:03AM CST
dbp's tutorial link is slightly better than mine.
I tend to add the target="_blank" in my links so that stuff opens in a new tab/window because that's how I like to browse.

Posted by: RockHusker on March 10, 2010 11:04AM CST
I wrote Gill an email,,,, first got the form reply which is what I expected, but a few weeks later I got another from a private email address that I believe to be Coach Gill. He was very nice and thanked me for all the support regardless of where he was.

Posted by: SuperHusker17 on March 10, 2010 11:06AM CST
that was supposed to be guys*, I'm just havin' all sorts of problems

Posted by: PT Husker on March 10, 2010 11:08AM CST
Rock, If you send someone a message it is best to let them know you did it. Otherwise I don't think folks check them to often. At least I don't. and it does not always tell you that you have a new one. Example, yours that you just sent me did not show up as a new message and I had to click my inbox to see it.

Posted by: rluben on March 10, 2010 11:09AM CST
lol Exiled I had a heated discussion with my Husker Buddy out here when he started trying to compare Reggie '3rd down back' Busch to Barry Sanders. For some reason that set me off and I went off on a tangent. He hasn't done anything to deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as Barry.

A situational back is the best he will ever be. knew it then. Bary's one of the best ever in my in opinion, top 5, easily top ten...Busch aint even top 75.

Posted by: RockHusker on March 10, 2010 11:11AM CST
Thanks PT - I will do that. I just have not been on here much. So been trying to catch Busiecreek to no avail.

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on March 10, 2010 11:12AM CST
Barry's last bowl game: 200+ yds, 5 TDs, didn't need to play the 2nd half

Bush's last bowl game: stupidly tried to lateral for no reason, giving the ball to Texas. Choker.

Posted by: RockHusker on March 10, 2010 11:15AM CST
Rluben roger that..... Barry was so good. I would think top ten for sure. To quote Lyle Bremser " he is twistin and turnin like a black rubber band" Lyle got in deep do do for that quote.

Posted by: drivebyposter on March 10, 2010 11:15AM CST
Trash;

"the coaches have actually switched his throwing arm to lefty"

Seems plausable and he would still have the best arm of the corn qb's

Go big lefty

Posted by: RockHusker on March 10, 2010 11:16AM CST
For the record that was not a B Sanders run quote, forget who the running back was, probably Johnny the Jet

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on March 10, 2010 11:17AM CST
Has anyone seen Sanders son? He's pretty dang good.

Posted by: PT Husker on March 10, 2010 11:18AM CST
I really hated to see Barry give up the NFL early. He was on his way to Sayers and Smith type numbers. "The Natural" If god ever invented a running back. he was it.

Posted by: rluben on March 10, 2010 11:18AM CST
Yes, it's a good idea to add the target = blank part of the code so it opens in a new window or tab for the person and doesn't take then away from the blog.

It's the right thing to do, like Barry handing the ball to the ref and acting like he knew he was going to score and it was no big thang, just another day at the office.

HSB. Looks like North Texas is going to the Dance.

Posted by: rluben on March 10, 2010 11:20AM CST
Hey DBP, I saw that you made the switch from model A to Shelby Cobra.

Now if they could just figure out how to make FF launch faster without an external helper program.

Posted by: rluben on March 10, 2010 11:21AM CST
I saw that last night PT, was flipping through the channels and saw the end of their game and thought of HSB.

PT Husker:

O yea! Im freaking excited... ESPN has already deamed us the "Cinderella" team for the tourni too lol

Im just hoping we get a good bracket so we can at least get 2-3 games deep.

Posted by: rluben on March 10, 2010 11:23AM CST
I was like hmmm...that is a real school afterall, he wasn't making it up.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on March 10, 2010 11:23AM CST
Aww... rluben i feel honored lol

Well we needed it considering how bad our football team was this past season.

Posted by: drivebyposter on March 10, 2010 11:24AM CST
good point on FF. But I do like it

Posted by: PT Husker on March 10, 2010 11:26AM CST
Russ, How goes it out west? work picking up?

Posted by: Trashman on March 10, 2010 11:26AM CST
Rlube

The colors of North Texas really get me going.

Makes me think of Kathy Ireland kicking FGs, Sinbad paving the lane, and Scott Bakula directing the crew......

Okay, that was really unnecessary.

Go Mean Green

(Funny thing. After attending UNT now, my closet looks like im ready for Xmas b/c UNL is Scarlet and UNT is Green lol)

Hey DBP you ever seen the factory Five Cobra kits, I'm thinking of building one in a couple years.

They use a 5.0 mustang as a donor, Superperformance has a turnkey replica and there are 2 companies in NE that do real nice replica kits, but the factory five kits seems the quickest less wallet painful route.

Trashman:

Whats funny is that Black isn't one of our colors... idk why they have black jerseys for Bball...

our colors are Green and White.

Posted by: PT Husker on March 10, 2010 11:29AM CST
DBP, hat to admit it but the Buffs could shock somebody. Who did they draw?

Posted by: rluben on March 10, 2010 11:35AM CST
Nope still slow for me right now, some small repaint here n there for a property manager I've worked for forver but he's a cheap bstrd, but it's better than starving.

But got a call end of last week from a builder who has a nice project (15 custom homes) starting up this spring sometime wanting to know if I was available. So maybe that will turn into something,

He and his twin brother haven't done spec homes in about 6 - 7years, so that surprised me, they usually build custom homes for Microsoft folks, so maybe lending and the market is getting back towards normal for the New construction market.

PT

CU will beat TT today.

HSB

Yep, green and white. Just like the Fighting Armadillos of Texas State.

Bakula made me think of "Dream On" everytime I saw him though. Brought back a lot of good teenager years....and a drive to want my parents to pay for HBO.

Posted by: PT Husker on March 10, 2010 11:40AM CST
Good luck with that Rlube. I think things are starting to ease up a bit as well.

Must be the Huskers return to dominance that is doing it. :)

Posted by: rluben on March 10, 2010 11:48AM CST
Coincidence...or not?

Yep it must be PT, Huskers put things right in the universe when they are who they should be.

Posted by: rluben on March 10, 2010 11:53AM CST
Trash n HSB, I was wondering about those colors, the black didn't seem like it was part of their colors from memory. But I thought it looked good, as good as black and green can anyways.

It wasn't their fault. The defense let them down.

BR ALERT! I made a final comment, to you about your exchange, back on anchor thread, with Yeu Mei? My bad, for not being with her, to help assist her? I also sent comment in your personal box?

Barry, is my favorite modern player, of all times in NFL? Yes an Okie Lite guy, from Wichita, and a thrill for me, to be able to sit with him, at a sports banquet in Wichita?

Class personified, like in TO type of quality, none better, than he, in my book of athletes? Too bad, he couldn't have played, for a team that could have risen to the SB, during his fantastic career?

I remember watching Okie State play DONU in Lincoln...I was sitting about halfway up in the south endzone next to some plesant OSU fans. Thurman Thomas was grinding it out for OSU, and doing a great job against the blackshirts... About the end of the third quarter I told the OSU guy next to me, "Wow, Thurman Thomas is as good as advertised!" The guy stared at me for a second and said, "If you think he is good, you should see the second stringer..."

Posted by: Wrestler on March 10, 2010 3:46PM CST
ThePancakeMan:

Great story! Loved it!

I was at a banquet, that Glen Mason former coach of KU was at one time, and he told a story about his first trip to Lincoln, very funny?

His team was on one end of the field warming up day before the game, whatever? And on the other end were Husker players, on the field stretching etc. As he left the field with his players, he said to a service person, wow those Husker players, look big and strong?

The service person said to Coach Mason, those are the JV guys, the varsity are still in meetings? Coach Mason said, I knew we were in trouble then?

Didn't Kenny Clark out-perform Sanders in both total yards and yards-per-carry in that game?

Posted by: memory of on March 10, 2010 5:41PM CST
wow, 609 yds rushing for NE

Posted by: lincolniter on March 11, 2010 1:14AM CST
Ken Clark took it to the house on the first play from scrimmage. I remember Pavelka saying "if you would have told me before the game that OSU would have scored 42 points I would have said Nebraska lost.

Posted by: lincolniter on March 11, 2010 1:34AM CST
Barry Sanders 35-189 4tds

Ken Clark 27-256 3tds

Steve Taylor 11-140 3tds

Bryan Carpenter 7-76

Tyreese Knox 10-53

Now thats how you smack teams up side the head by putting up a 35-0 lead after 15 minutes of play. WOW! It give me goosebumps.
