RECRUITING: Some cold feet
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on December 18, 2010 at 1:45PM CST
Ah, the joys of recruiting.

Just a couple days ago, Husker fans were introduced to tight end Darien Bryant, who made a commitment to Nebraska on Thursday.

But Bryant's high school coach, Tom Phillips, tells Rivals.com Bryant decommitted within 12 hours.

"Cold feet like the wedding," Phillips told Rivals. "He went home and just didn't feel like he made the right decision. He's going to give credit to Coach (Ron) Brown and he's one heck of a recruiter. He and (Bo) Pelini did a great job on the recruiting process. I mean, I don't know what Darien really wants."

Phillips added that he didn't think the Huskers were eliminated from the recruiting race.

"Nebraska will stay in it," he told Rivals. "When you look at the offers, looking at football schools, it's probably the best he has on there in my opinion. Traditionally, everybody knows Nebraska is pretty darn good. Logistically, it's very doable for mom to go see him. So I don't know, that's a Nebraska call."

better now than a year from now. Good luck and I hope he changes his mind.

Posted by: wacky4huskers on December 18, 2010 1:58PM CST
He needs to be sure he's all N or go wherever he feels is the right fit.

We don't need recruits that don't want to be a Husker.

NU will live...

If not 100% N, then I prefer we look elsewhere.

Love how a Jamal Turner had a special "signing" at his house yesterday to declare he is 100% N. Hat, jersey, loved ones, coaches

Graduated, scheduled for classes 1/10, and ready to roll. What a stud. He is what we are looking for...all in.

Can't wait to have Turner competing at QB. He will be a factor early. Trust me

Posted by: wacky4huskers on December 18, 2010 2:16PM CST
Miami I believe you are right I expect him to be a stud Qback in the future.

I also can't wait to see how well Brion Carnes does

Hola Life In The Red!!

"So I don't know, that's a Nebraska call." What does that mean? Auburn offer more?

The Husker offense doesn't need an indecisive TE...They need a play maker!

Keep searching!!!

Anybody can get cold feet or a case of buyer's remorse. NU still has a good situation to offer. Calm down, Darien.

MBH, scheduled for classes 1/11, I think you meant to type...

Posted by: Brian Christopherson on December 18, 2010 2:25PM CST
GBR,

I believe he means it's Nebraska's coaches' call on whether or not they would still want to extend an offer.

Mt. Union vs. Wisconsin Whitewater
Going to be on espnu in a few minutes.

For those pure football fans.

Posted by: Nuke1970 on December 18, 2010 2:28PM CST
If a kid shows cold feet, would not surprise me to see Bo pull the offer. He only wants kids 100% sure this is where they should be. NU is not a place to beg someone to come to. It is an honor to wear the crimson and white and we don't need someone who wonders if that is the best place for him.

Posted by: throw46 on December 18, 2010 2:31PM CST
That's Division III.

Thanks Brian C! I was just messin!

Still a good looking player. Stats aren't crazy, but if NU can lock him down...could be good!

What's the scoop on losing EK? Is that going to effect any recruits?

Posted by: CornhuskerInOhio on December 18, 2010 3:24PM CST
Nuke 1970, I agree with wanting those who are sure they want to be at NU, but I was confused by your reference to "crimson and white." Alabama and Oklahoma wear crimson. Nebraska's colors are scarlet and cream.

We are in dire need of quality receivers.

A Crabtree or Broyles on the 2010 Huskers and we are undefeated. (Don't make me recap the horror show our receivers put on in our loses.)

We need a 6'4" receiver with good hands and a 4.4 40.

Posted by: rluben on December 18, 2010 3:54PM CST
Nuke, while part of me wants to agree that that's the way it should be, that's just not the reality of college recruiting and the decision process, some kind have to be sold on the idea.

So you think Tom shoulda gave up on Turner Gill because he was undecided between Oklahoma and NE or did he do the right thing by showing up there the same day Barry Did to pitch Turner one more time?

Was Tommy Frazier A lock from day one...or did he have to be recruited, sold, convinced to some degree?

You don't have to sell a Walkon from NE who has Nothing but Love for his home team and wants to see if he can compete at this level.

But more times than not you have to sell an out of state kid who has other options to consider.

Most often you have to do a better job of selling your staff and your program than the other coaches recruiting the kid.

Looked like a player with lots of upside potential, hope he reconsiders, if not, best of luck and I feel sorry for him if he ever plays against us, because he'll be on the losing side.

Posted by: wacky4huskers on December 18, 2010 4:04PM CST
What I meant by being all N is he should not commit until he is sure he wants to be at Nebraska and not commit and the decommit 12 hours later.

Posted by: drivebyposter on December 18, 2010 4:05PM CST
Hey Nish, you are out of time out. Is it cold in the barren lands of Vegas?

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas.

Posted by: fleaflicker on December 18, 2010 4:09PM CST
I like the way that Coach Pelini recruits......no grey area. The coaches lay out what they expect from the kid and they can then best decide if it's right for them. The prima donas that expect the moon would not even consider Nebraska.

It's a big decision for a kid.....personnally I think Bryant got caught up in the "Nebraska experience" and is now just catching his breath. I don't see any reason to brand this dude right now. If he chooses to come to Nebraska he'll know that he'll have to earn his way.

DPB,
Naw, just got done watching the Air Bender or something like that.

GF looking through her Chick flic movie files for the next movie to watch. I'm sure it won't be Rambo.

It has rained the last two days. You know if it rains in Vegas for longer than 15 minutes it floods.

So should I pay the 125 to go watch the Vegas Bowl? Boise St against Utah?

Merry Christmas Back at ya.

Are we still aloud to post Merry Christmas on LITR?

Oh well I just did. Merry Christmas everyone!

Crap.

Thought Darien would be perfect to shore us up at tight end.

Oh, well.

Just saw mention yesterday that we lost Ryan Hill forever, owing to concussions? More crappy news. We need to hit the trail, find another quality TE recruit, and a couple WR's.

Too bad for the kid. If he's not all in, lets move on.

Still wonder specifically what he meant when he said the coaches here were honest, and others weren't. I've heard that before, but I'd like to know specifics.

Soooo psyched for Jamal Turner. He's committed to Nebraska like a walk on from Omaha.

Without Jamal talking up the program to Aaron Green, I don't think he commits.

Inertesting......FYI....
Boo Jackson QB for Ohio was the QB for El camino
Jc, that was the team that beat Zac Lee / ccsf
In their championship game.

Posted by: joe9wicket on December 18, 2010 9:53PM CST
Drive by, the band is flying... last year the plan was to bus them, thus the reason why they couldn't go. $150,000 to do it, but those kids deserve it, they're on the field before the sun rises.

Ohio... WTH. Whatever reason Boo couldn't start, that's fine, Bates is not getting it done, and without Keller anchoring a D that really needs to sub to keep up, their boat is sunk with those refs allowing the no huddle Troy to get away w/ the 15 players on the field at times before the snap.

Yeah, I know... when Solich was at NU and the sideline huddle scuttle bu++... looks like Troy found a loophole by not having a huddle.

Double post to say double U tee eff. Carry on.

Posted by: Fitzy on December 19, 2010 12:25AM CST
Maybe Nebraska pulled their offer... and that is why the kid decom'ed. Maybe Nebraska is looking at signing someone else...different position or something... very few spots remaining.

Posted by: Fitzy on December 19, 2010 12:30AM CST
I cannot wait to see Aaron green and Jamal Turner and/or T Martinez in the same backfield(SCARY stuff)... Brion Carnes looked good on HS tape too and has had a RS year now to get better as well. Wonder how he is coming along?

There is no question we have plenty of rushing weapons out of the backfield... and if Braylen Heard qualifies ... wow.... Burkhead, Green and Heard at RB would be stellar.

Posted by: drivebyposter on December 19, 2010 7:52AM CST
With the thrashing of Fresno State, the noncon for next year just got a lot easier.

Posted by: rluben on December 19, 2010 8:19AM CST
Merry Christmas Driveby, nope no snow here now, had some a few weeks ago.

Doesn't usually stick around for long here.

Had some flooding and mud slide issues from rain all over the state and Oregon last week.
Was even raining in the mountains instead of snowing. That's a bad combo when it rains alot up there and is raining alot all the way to the coast.

Rivers and creeks fill up fast, and we have lots of mudslide issues in the hilly areas, which is just about everywhere around here.

Wasn't as bad as some years.

Posted by: rluben on December 19, 2010 8:31AM CST
A buddy of mine, a building contractor, is building a house for himself on a hill with a wide open view of Pugent Sound in Edmonds on a property he's owned for years.

He was going to start his foundation and t do the pilings on the downhill side this week, but can't because of the damage and the moisture content.

I can't recall for sure the exacts plan details, but I remember him talking about having to go about a hundred foot deep with concrete pilings on the backside downhill slope under the foundation or something like that to meet current codes.

He wasn't excited about that part of the build process, was rather expensive I guess. Probably have to use those heavy duty cardboard cylinder shaped forms stacked on top of each other for a hundred feet deep.

Doesn't sound like fun, not sureh ow they go about it for sure, never been on a build site on a steep slope to see them one done, so I'm guessing.

Building a house on a downhill slope in an area where mud slides are prevalent is ill advised IMO.

Posted by: rluben on December 19, 2010 9:03AM CST
He's at the top of the hill.

You couldn't build in 75% of WA if you didn't build on a slope.

Where they really run into problems is where it one hill after another , like a terraced slope and they clear too many trees.

Come visit WA sometime and you'll see what I mean about the terrain...we have way more hilly terrain than flat land.

If you rally want to have fun, go to Seattle in an old sports car with a slightly slipping clutch, weak brakes and no parking break and sit at a light on one of the hills while you also feather the throttle to keep your sidedraft webber carbs running.

Much fun, much fun

Posted by: rluben on December 19, 2010 9:10AM CST
We have some 45° give or take a few° hills in Seattle with stop lights.

Posted by: rluben on December 19, 2010 9:16AM CST
Mudslides aren't prevalent in Edmonds all that much, they have pretty strict building codes and have built things right for the most part and they have proper drainage, ect ect.

It's usually in older neighborhoods in Seattle and over on the Eastside of Lake Washington in the foothills that have the serious mudslide issues.

He's just dealing with over saturation issues I think...I half listen when a man who is well off financially is whining about something trivial like his schedule being thrown off.

Boo hooo.

Probably already stressing over his construction loan and finishing his house before the construction phase of the loan converts to a conventional mortgage.

Been around enough builders and home owners working off construction or remodel loans to know how they stress over operating under % only payments vs. conventional mortgage payments. Construction loans usually are 6 months to a year and then convert to conventional.

As a painter and finish carpenter I'm always one of the last trades on the project, so I've seen enough behind schedule...please save my a$$ jobs (almost every dang one to be exact) to know how it goes.

The Hands off Builders who have investors are the funnest to deal with, especially when they cry about interest payments blah blah blah...likes it's my problem.

Posted by: rluben on December 19, 2010 10:07AM CST
Had to vent about whiny builders who are always behind schedule and expect the last trades on the project to save their precious schedule...since my mind wandered to the subject.

Gotta love the picture of a dude who just got done spraying a ton of wainscoating and millwork sitting there all high on fumes listening to some whiny dude in a suit who rolled up in a paid for Hummer cry about interest payments and schedules as he looks around smiling and saying how amazing things look, blah blah blah, schedule this payment that...man how do you deal with these fumes, I'm hungry...I feel kinda dizzy....Let's go grab a beer and a burger in a Boston accent.

Wait, you gotta drive, you can't get in my Hummer like that...blah blah blah....wahh waah wahhh.

So how's things with you Russ, I'm buying.

Are you done yet, when can you be done, carpets coming tomorrow, blah blah blah.

It's all good fun 'til a schedules not met or a builder gets knocked out.

Posted by: rluben on December 19, 2010 10:12AM CST
Just musing a little, usually this time of year I'm deeply immersed in some behind 7,000 sqr ft palace for a Microsoft employee, or some big remodel project with a builder behind on schedule pushing me to get done, as I go through the daily struggle of trying to get my guys to the jobsite.

Miss it, but don't miss it lol.

Posted by: HuskerBuckFever on December 19, 2010 10:20AM CST
Tried to get some thoughts on another thread...maybe I'll try it here.

How about the OC's from Northern Illinois or Troy? They ran the ball when it worked adn then took what they wanted through the air.

The next question, how can they get big and big play WR's to their schools and Nebraska has to try and do what they do with pretty much walk-ons?

Could you imagine how explosive the Huskers' zone read would be with a couple of those guys lined up on the outside?

Thoughts?

I believe I have a legitimate question . How can the NCAA now, penalise SCHOOL IF A BOOSTER ,IN cALIF,OR BACK EAST contacts a kids dad now and offer him money for the kid to play at whatever institution they want?you won't be able to penalise a school for not knowing what someone else did. Cam newton decision I believe just opened a new can of worms on recruiting..Cam Newton should never have won the Heisman tropy. Again though the media and the Downtown athletic club have disgraced the true meaning of the award. from here on out ,it should be renamed { The college award for the highest paid athlete who didn't know his dad was taking money award]..So thankyou media and to the downtown athletic club for once again ,tarnishing this prestigous award. You guys arwe now the laughing stock of awards

The Huskers have good depth at TE, with Kyler Reed, Dreu Young, and Ben Cotton (among others). Still, the effort to sign another tight end during the last two recruiting periods has been frustrating. First, NU gets a commitment from the best Juco TE in the nation, Chase Harper, but he fails to qualify academically. Then, news breaks of an All Pac-10 TE transferring--Kavario Middleton--but, those plans hit a snag as well. And, now the decommitment from Bryant. Unfortunately, looking over recruiting lists, it doesn't seem like NU has a shot at any of the top 50 TEs that haven't already committed. If Bryant doesn't return to the fold, hopefully Pelini and Co. can secure a big-time TE in next year's class. GBR!

rluben...no a little of the slopes in Washington.
Also know a guy who is a steep slope foundation contractor.
He's a unique guy who is well know up there, he says that his client changes a soon a he takes / gets the job.
The client becomes the hill/mountain....whatever.
He's kind of a earth whisperer.

Anyway, he was called in by the city when they thru up their hands on a difficult section of roadway..........later was called in by Mr. Gates Sr. on a house site.

This guy btw won't get is civil engineering license, but he helped write /edit the code.

Anyway if your friend needs a solution, let me know and I'll forward his info....he's the man.

The good pass-catching TE's are developed in college anyway - not high schools where they are seldom involved in the passing game. So, I'm not worried about the lack of a highly rated TE in the class. It has never been a weakness at Nebraska as far back as I can remember as there had always been someone stepping up their game.

LarrySt,

Miami Beach Husker is right on. I've seen Jamal play 3 games this year and he is bringing good things to the Huskers. Speed, quickness, deceptiveness, good grades and no problems. He will be a very welcome addition in a couple of weeks.

This is a blessing for the Huskers. He is too wishy-washy to be N. Only 18 catches for 248 yards in a 10 game season is not that productive and he changes his mind every 12 hours. Carvajal is a better TE and has more potential if it is decided we need one this year. Hope Bo pulls the offer and see how he enjoys playing at "Northeast South Virginia State!!!!!!!!

Just curious about a few things...

Is Taylor healthy? Wonder if he is in Lincoln or back in San Diego?

Zac, will he play if healthy in his last game?

Will Wats ever use a combo of Taylor, Rex, Roy in the same backfield? What about the diamond formation OU runs....kind of shows a different look, and gives you options.

Maybe M McNeil can be showcased...he was invited to the Senior Bowl, quite a compliment for a player not used much at NU this year...

The Husker players need to take Driving and Drinking 101.......First don't park your car in the middle of the street..and then stay in it. And for goodness sakes turn your lights on.

I read that Washington has loss 4 D linemen. Should be pretty easy to run on these guys if Wats brings his "A" game.
