'Rams should take Bradford'
Posted by: Steve Sipple on March 30, 2010 at 9:26AM CST

Interesting column from Bryan Burwell of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch newspaper. He writes that he considers himself a changed man. He has been beating the drum for the St. Louis Rams to select Ndamukong Suh with the first pick in the NFL Draft in three weeks. But Burwell has changed his mind.

Sam Bradford's the guy, Burwell writes after watching Bradford in his NFL pro day Monday in Norman, Okla.

Opines Burwell: Bradford came into the Evereat Center and put on a 63-throw clinic. He made every conceivable pass that an NFL scout, general manager or coach would want to see. He threw 10-yard hooks, he threw short seams, he flicked beautiful drag routes and touch-pass swings. He zipped deep hooks and short corners. And right when you were eager to know if he still had that NFL-caliber arm strength to air it out on deep throws, he gassed several balls across the field and left everyone who lined three sides of the practice field buzzing in awe.

"Time will tell (if he's a franchise QB), but he had a great workout," said Mike Holmgren, the noted quarterbacking connoisseur and newly appointed Cleveland Browns general manager. "In my opinion, I liked him all along. But I wanted to see him after recovering from the injury and he did fine. Nothing surprised me."

Only one ball hit the ground all morning, and that was a drop on a slant route that should have been caught. He was accurate as advertised — a mandatory requirement for a QB in the West Coast offense — and if there were any questions about whether his arm had lost any zip after surgery, he removed all doubt with many of those deep throws, including one that traveled at least 60 yards in the air and dropped down out of the sky like rain into the outstretched hands of an in-stride receiver.

Please God don't let Suh go to the Lions!

Posted by: Bloozman on March 30, 2010 9:36AM CST
Chiefs! Chiefs! Chiefs! Trade up and get SUH!!!

Posted by: SoDakHusker on March 30, 2010 9:38AM CST
Good for Sam. He took his chances by not going pro last year and being the #1 pick to survive injury and still become the #1 pick this year. He better hope he has some time to throw behind that "offensive" offensive line.

That being said, with apologies to Ted Nugent, just watch Suh become the Motor City Madman lining up next to Vanden Bosch next year in Detroit!

Posted by: Fitzy on March 30, 2010 9:52AM CST
I still see the Seahawks trading up to get Suh. The Hawks already have 2 first round picks. They could trade a first round pick and another later round pick to move up a few spots. Suh is from the Pacific Northwest(Portland) and Pete Carroll is a defensive coach and good friend and mentor of one Bo Pelini... it all adds up to me.

Posted by: SuperHusker17 on March 30, 2010 9:58AM CST
I'm with you Blooz, I love watching the NFL but I can't ever really seem to pick a team so might as well have him close. Just think him and Dorsey on the line, but coached under Bo. Plus the Chiefs are stealing all the old Patriots coaches, might actually be something to watch again.

Posted by: Haley on March 30, 2010 9:59AM CST
I like Sam Bradford. I've always liked Sam Bradford. I probably always will like Sam Bradford.

In fact, why would anybody want Ndamukong Suh? Character? Bull. Athletic ability? Bull. Acheivements? Bull.
Why would a guy like Suh believe he can pass as an NFL player?

(sarcasm, don't eat me)

Posted by: PT Husker on March 30, 2010 10:02AM CST
As long as we are dreaming, The Broncos need him. But then so does everybody else.

Lots of manuvering will go on between now and then.

Posted by: PT Husker on March 30, 2010 10:05AM CST
Haley, you just think Bradford is cute. Come on. Admit it.

Posted by: PT Husker on March 30, 2010 10:10AM CST
Haley, check your messages.

Ha ha I could somewhat see him being the next Tom Brady, going on the cover of GQ. As if QB's don't act like pretty boys already....

Posted by: Ted Sheckler on March 30, 2010 10:18AM CST
It seems like the Lions are really beefing up defense, so it may be a good fit for Suh. I think Tampa may be even better.

Posted by: throw46 on March 30, 2010 10:20AM CST
With the few throws that I saw on TV....he looked stiff. So I'm pretty surprised with all the reports.

Posted by: dsdevlin on March 30, 2010 10:24AM CST
As a Packer fan, the thought of Suh chasing Rodgers around for 10 seasons scares the s%$# out of me.

Posted by: NishBigRed on March 30, 2010 10:25AM CST
GQ meaning Guns and Quart jars? Bradford had to have a few guns hanging in the back of his truck, right?

Posted by: RobotMonster on March 30, 2010 10:36AM CST
IMO
Clausen is a better pro prospect than Bradford. He played in a pro style offense on a crappy team but still excelled. Bradford played on a very good Sooner team with tons of talent around him that helped make him look good.

Bradford was hardly ever under center which in the pros is a must. Not that Bradford is a bad QB but I think the learning curve for him will be higher than Clausens.

Don't take these breathless "predictions" too seriously. The Rams know who they want to pick. The question now is if they can get that player signed and in camp on time.

They may know that Player A is the best in the draft and the only real difference maker out there, but if Player A is going to pull a Crabtree, then they're smart to hedge their bets with Player B, Player C, and so on.

Not to mention that the smoke screen hopefully knocks down the asking price and drives up demand for teams to trade up.

Alot of teams need Suh but I think he'll go to Tampa.

Posted by: PT Husker on March 30, 2010 10:49AM CST
It is about selling tickets. Bradford is a good QB. So is Clausen. And lets not forget Colt McCoy.

Bradford is a country boy, as is McCoy. He will be very popular with the fans. Which sells tickets. At least for a while. If the Rams take him they better finds some folks to go with him and quick.

None of these bottem feeders have the team that it takes to make a move. So draft a High profile QB and people will pay to come and watch him play.

Not so much a D tackle.

Posted by: Bumarooskie on March 30, 2010 10:51AM CST
Taking Bradford is a smart move for the Rams. They need somebody like him badly. But I REALLY hate to see N Suh go to the the barren wasteland of the Detroit Lions. Matt Millen wasn't the only problem in that organization and they've since proven time and again that they are incompetent at running a football team. Plus, who would want to go to Detroit?

It would be great to see Big Suh in Denver, but they've been trading for Defensive guys so I don't see them going after him.

If Detroit takes McCoy (remember they're idiots up there), who's next in line to benefit from drafting the best player on the board?

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on March 30, 2010 10:55AM CST
Here are the top picks in the draft:
1 St. Louis (1-15)
2 Detroit (2-14)
3 Tampa Bay (3-13)
4 Washington (4-12)
5 Kansas City (4-12)
6 Seattle (5-11)
7 Cleveland (5-11)
8 Oakland (5-11)
9 Buffalo (6-10)
10 Jacksonville (7-9)
11 Denver - from Chicago (7-9)

Thanks Exiled.

As long as Ndomukong is happy where he goes, that's the most important thing. I'd just like to see him go someplace that he'll have a chance at a Superbowl ring in his career and not go the way of Toniu Funoti and never be heard from again.

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on March 30, 2010 11:00AM CST
I would say it would be good for Suh to go to Tampa--no income tax in Florida, right?

Though I think he'd like to be in Seattle, nearest NFL team to his mother in Portland.

Posted by: PT Husker on March 30, 2010 11:07AM CST
I am not an NFL owner. wouldn't be even if I could. But it would seem to me, that if my entire team sucked I would want to get several players rahter than shoot my financal wad on 1. Who is coming off an injury at that.

I would think that the #1 or 2 pick would be worth quite a little to some teams.

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on March 30, 2010 11:10AM CST
PT, you're right.
In this era of salary cap, but unconstrained rookie salaries, the #1 pick is more of a burden than a reward.

The NFL collective bargaining agreement expires this year. 2011 will have no salary cap...after that, no one knows. A strike or lockout is possible.

One thing the veterans want is either a rookie salary cap or slotting thing like the NBA has, or a limit to the length of a rookie contract--like 3 years. I don't think it's a terrible idea, though I'm opposed to salary caps in general...so what do I know?

Posted by: PT Husker on March 30, 2010 11:11AM CST
Can a player call his shot? "I don't want to play for you. I want to go to Seattle. I don't care about the number beside my name. this is where I want to play".

Probably not. but it sounds good.

Posted by: PT Husker on March 30, 2010 11:12AM CST
Now that I think about it, He could sign predraft correct?

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on March 30, 2010 11:17AM CST
Players have "called their shots."

Eli Manning did it (refused to play in San Diego).
John Elway did it (refused to play for the Colts...can't remember if they were Indy or Baltimore at the time).
It's generally frowned upon.

The team with the #1 pick can negotiate that pick before the draft, but I think they have to wait until draft day to sign.

Posted by: NishBigRed on March 30, 2010 11:22AM CST
John Elway did it with the Colts and Eli Manning did t the Chargers, so it can be done. Now who got the better deal with Manning and Phillip Rivers? Manning not wanting to play for the Chargers?
I will take Drew Brees over either one of those two.

Interesting conversation we have here. I've got kids coming in about 5 minutes, just popped in to see what was going on. My opinion is the Rams should trade that pick and parlay it into multiples to get the most help, and they are in need of help. That said, it's hard to pass on a franchise QB when one's available.

Posted by: PT Husker on March 30, 2010 11:23AM CST
I remembered Elway, forgot about Eli.

Anyway, it is kind of a strange place to work. If I have multiple options for my services, I can pick where I want to go. Which may not be the guy that pays me the most.

Not so much in pro sports. At least not in the beginning.

Exiled,
Sorry for the rerun. Guess we think alike.
Scary.

Lunch Time. Back in a while.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on March 30, 2010 11:32AM CST
On the Suh/McCoy thing...IMO what those in the picking order have to consider is what type of defensive front that they play. Both of these guys were 4-3 based DT's, a decision will have to be made by those that are 3-4 based as to whether or not either of these two would fit in their scheme. It is possible, not likely but possible, that 3-4 based teams might pass on both of these guys. Just a thought.

The smart thing to do is to trade the pick, but nobody wants to trade up to #1 because you have to pay the number one pick at least $40 million dollars.

If I'm a GM picking 2-10 I'd say, "Well, I could trade up and spend a bazillion dollars more to get a player who's slightly better, or I could stand pat, save money, and still get a great prospect."

"As long as Ndomukong is happy where he goes, that's the most important thing. I'd just like to see him go someplace that he'll have a chance at a Superbowl ring in his career and not go the way of Toniu Funoti and never be heard from again."

With the money he'll make, he should be happy anywhere.

Sadly, if you're one of the top picks, you're pretty much guaranteed to go to a terrible team.

Posted by: GreenBrterRed on March 30, 2010 1:29PM CST
Bo will draft him and give him four more years of eligibility at Nebraska. B12 QB's will transfer to any conference NU does not play. Several B12 coaches will quit and all will protest loudly. NFL teams will pay him not to enter the draft (unless they can get him). National championships will soon come rolling our way. LITR will change to SITR.

Nyquil and 151 rum sure make me profound...and smart.

Robotmonster, this time your opinion, about Claussen better than Sam, puts you in the 1 percent minority, of opinions, to all the NFL guru's, and Sam playing on a good FB team in college, well so did Tebow, and others? You don't think NFL guru's, are capable of assessing individual abilities?

He would have been a #1, signing for 40 million last year, and apparently survived the injury, and will be in that neighborhood again, for this year? But your know more than 99 percent concensus, of whose the best QB?

And the ones that like Sam, the vast majority, say the skill sets between the two, isn't even close?

GBR! Zhou Da Hong! GB12! Zhou Da Shier!

Posted by: Wrestler on March 30, 2010 3:57PM CST
but you know, sorry blog police, a guffaw on my part, at before 5 am in the morning, HK time?

Coach, I agree, Suh, was the best at any position, this year, and should have won the Heisman, in my opinion?

If they ever, give as much wt., to defensive players, as they do offensive skill players?

But Suh or McCoy choice, is exactly as you depicted, what skills that team needs, the most for a defensive player? Very finite decisions, for NFL?

Suh was the best, and McCoy not too shabby, also?

GBR! Zhou Da Hong! GB 12! Zhou Da Shier!

Posted by: Wrestler on March 30, 2010 6:04PM CST
One more thing, since this thread is about Sam? Great individual for character like Suh, so is McCoy, for that matter? You won't hear anything about these 3 athletes?

All 3 class individuals in character? Sam, a great role model, for his Native Americans? A great student, also? And a 3 star, winning the Hesiman out of HS? Shoots the star theories, a little bit?

And if not like Jason White, injury prone in college? Remember, won Heisman, his sophmore year? This past season of injury, was his junior, if not and would have played healthy, would have been, the greatest of OU QB's, in my opinion?

If he stays healthy, he will shine, in NFL, this I am sure of, he has the upticks, in the tools dept.? So he has what it takes, the physical skills, and has PMA working for him, as well?

GBR! Zhou Da Hong! GB 12! Zhou Da Shier!

Busiekcreek is so proud of Tebow and his character as she should, well 3 others for character that will go high in NFL draft are Suh, of course, and Bradford and McCoy?

Posted by: Haley on March 30, 2010 7:57PM CST
Got it PT.

Bradford is very cute, but that's besides the point. He's a damn good quarterback- and you know it too.

Posted by: Robka on March 31, 2010 9:56AM CST
Blah, Blah, Blah When UNTOUCHED & given a lot of time to throw, Sam is a good QB, but the problem with that statement is those variables rarely exist in the NFL. Once again, Sammy B. will fold like a cheep suit and the Rams will regret taking him and they will lose a 34 year fan in the process. Do the right thing Rams take Suh or trade down.

GO BIG SUHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
