Questions about Nebraska-Oklahoma game go here

It's 7-3 Huskers starting the second half. What's on your mind?

Why use the option?

Posted by: Bleedin' Red in VA on November 7, 2009 9:08PM CST
How much longer can the defense hold out without the offense generating a solid sound drive?

Posted by: NorCal Husker on November 7, 2009 9:19PM CST
Listening on internet radio here in NoCal. Anyway, all those red zone turnovers against Iowa State seems to have damaged the Huskers confidence. Is the problem with out talent, play calling, or both?

In the beginning of the year, I felt there was one strength we could count on for our offense, the TE. McNeil was coming off a record breaking year and we had Young to give us some depth.

So far this year, they are non-factors each and every week. Why are the tight ends not being used more?

Posted by: Miller on November 7, 2009 10:05PM CST
Don't ask Bo anything about the offense, he doesn't have the answers and can't figure out what their problem is. NU has big issues with this offense, they are just so painful to watch!

Posted by: Tadow on November 7, 2009 10:20PM CST
Can we win out?

Posted by: NorCal Husker on November 7, 2009 10:33PM CST
Ugly win versus OU somewhat eases the pain of the ugly loss versus Iowa State. The offense needs to take the defense out for dinner. Uh, someone be sure to drive Suh!!!

Posted by: BrianSm on November 7, 2009 10:35PM CST
What do you get when you cross the best defense in the nation, with the worst offense ?

NU.

The O line played better. The OC needs to be shown the door, IMHO.

Posted by: JTHF on November 7, 2009 10:35PM CST
I know Oklahoma has a good defense but what can we do on offense to turn this around? Is it the play calling or the o-line or what. It's a good thing our defense shows up each game.

Posted by: twall74 on November 7, 2009 10:35PM CST
how good is our fing defense???????????????

Posted by: KeithHe on November 7, 2009 10:39PM CST
Why can't our D stay on the field all the time?

Posted by: wildlovehog on November 7, 2009 10:40PM CST
Not that they'd even say, but is the quarterback going to be looking over his shoulder the rest of the way, because if they have a bad quarter, they're going to be yanked? Zac or Cody, doesn't matter really, is this how the rest of the season plays out? Cody one game, Zac the other?

Posted by: Ivy Mike on November 7, 2009 10:41PM CST
When can we expect an offense? Next week? Bowl game? Next year?

Posted by: BrianSm on November 7, 2009 10:41PM CST
Can we just punt on first down ??

Put Watson and Cosgrove together and you have a train wreck.

Mehhhhh

Posted by: KeithHe on November 7, 2009 10:43PM CST
Why couldn't we have had just 7 TO's against Iowa State and have one less loss?

I love our D, I love the Huskers!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: SoDakHusker on November 7, 2009 10:43PM CST
Did we not have reliance on our WRs, or did OU just take them away?

Posted by: NorCal Husker on November 7, 2009 10:45PM CST
The Husker defense has been consistently excellent. Unfortunately, the offense has also been consistent .... We may as well go back to a running attack for the lack of a passing attack!

Everyone loves Defence!!

Like a band of swashbuckling pirates, the Blackshirt D stormed the decks of the Sooner Schooner, and thoroughly destroyed all hopes of an OU victory.
Suh, Crick, Turner and Allen stormed aboard the sagging Sooner ship, with Asante, Haag, O'Hanlon, Dennard and Dillard swinging aboard right behind them. My, what a performance. My, what a statement. My, what a victory! THE BLACKSHIRTS ARE BACK!

Posted by: TommyOC on November 7, 2009 10:51PM CST
Very proud of Zac. Very proud of Roy. Still need to figure out why our OL is so inconsistent. It's a huge win for the team and they all deserve credit for gutting it out.

This defense should be the PROUDEST! O'Hanlon really redeemed himself tonight.

Are you people ever going to be happy. the game went exactly how we needed it to go for the skers to win. Only one fumble and very few drastic mistakes. Yall knew the defense would win this game for us and they did so stop your complaining and enjoy a classic husker victory!!!!!!!!!1

Ps this is absolutely the best defense ever at nebraska and Prince is flippin awesome!!!!!!!

Posted by: Boonies on November 7, 2009 10:53PM CST
I think a lot of us thought we'd be 6-3 at this point, but who thought 2 of em would be TT and ISU? Not me, that's for sure!

Wow, what a DEFENSE!

Posted by: HeiSUHman on November 7, 2009 10:54PM CST
Simply put: Defense=Good, Offense=Bad Carl Pellini=Stays Shawn Watson=Goes

ps- what a lack of imagination on Watson's part...good God! Get rid of him!!! Please!!!

Posted by: Sludge on November 7, 2009 10:56PM CST
YAAAAA!!! Our Defense comes thru and plays the greatest game Ive ever seen! Even my Okie coworkers texted me and they think so as well!!

THANK YOU DEFENSE for one of the greatest games ever!!

Posted by: TommyOC on November 7, 2009 10:57PM CST
I thought we'd be 9-0 and we could have been. I do like the way things are shaping up though. We just became bowl eligible and we're in control of the North if we win over KSU and Colorado. Who wouldn't have like that senario at the beginning of the year? They have to feel good after beating OU considering what they did to us last year. Great for the team, great for recruiting, great for the state of Nebraska and all the fans.

Posted by: Sludge on November 7, 2009 11:03PM CST
The BLACKSHIRTS just gave Coach Pelini a win HIS WAY!! There is NO QUESTION, we have the best defense in college football. PERIOD! Hats off to you, D-Line, LINEBACKERS, and SECONDARY. You just held OU without a TD for the first time since 96!

Good God, can you imagine if we even had an AVERAGE offense?! People would not want to play us...

I need to paint everything I own BLACK now.

Posted by: MattMiller23 on November 7, 2009 11:05PM CST
still can't stand zac lee. Anyone can hand off to roy for 139 yards. I love the offense. Let green play!!!

Now, you think we are hard on Watson?! HA! You havent heard nothin, compared to how the OU peeps will rip apart their OCoord Wilson.

Well, my girl is coming over, so peace out fellas, and have a great nite!

Enjoy the win, no matter how we get it!

Sludge, right on dude!!!
It's a shame we have Watson calling the play on offense.
I believe with someone with even an inkling of an offensive imagination, we would be at least at 8 wins, 1 loss...

Im so proud of our Huskers! What an unbelievable performance by our BLACKSHIRTS!!! Awesome, just totally Awesome!! We r on our way back!! U better believe that!!! With any kind of O at all we would be 8-1, or possibly 9-0! All of that negative s*** is past!! We'll just see u at the Big-12 Championship Game!!! Book-em Danno! lmao

Just a fantastic defensive effort. I haven't seen a defense play together like this year for a long time. The blackshirts are back. Great game. But i tell you what, come monday i'm gonna start worrying about kansas. Sure they've lost 4 in a row with KSU today, but Kansas is no push over, especially since our offense in none existent. I'm not ready to crown us big 12 north champs quite yet. Our next three games got me a little worried, but with our D playing like they did tonight we can do anything. Great Game. GBR.

ASK bO ..AFTER ALL THE INJURIES WE HAVE HAD,hOW DOES HE KEEP THIS TEAM RUNNING SO WELL?

Posted by: BenAr2 on November 7, 2009 11:44PM CST
CONGRATULATIONS to the huskers!! HUGE win, even though it was ugly. Eveyone one of the guys on the defense deserves a game ball, as well as Landry Jones. Mr. Watson, PLEASE STOP CALLING PLAYS WHICH INVOLVES ZAC LEE RUNNING THE BALL (OR USING HIM AS AN OPTION). HE CAN'T RUN, AND EVERYONE (but you) KNOWS IT. The zone-read and option, with Lee, is a big fat 0. Why do you insist?? They are, simply put, wasted opportunities; not fooling anyone and no success. Get a clue, please. That being said, can we stop with the "fire Shawn Watson" stuff . . . even though it may be best for the program, it would seem so much cleaner if we could simply point out his bone-headed play-calling, it seems a little less hostile. GBR!

I wish the star had the old layout for the forum! This one sucks and is too long to post

Posted by: StayTrue2NU! on November 7, 2009 11:46PM CST
i loved that watson FINALLY went with the heavy sets and used the fullback as a lead blocker(even though he kinda got knocked around)

but.... at what point do we start pulling out some big time plays... taking some risks ?? who are we waiting for ? what opponent do we have to face before he thinks we need to do some special plays ?! is our o-line so bad that we can't even do a quick slant or curl route in the passing game ?! sheesh... it's not THAT damn hard ! why not take some shots downfield and let our receivers go get it ? what reciever will want to come play for a team that throws for 39 yards ?! he calls plays like our players are not even CLOSE talent wise....

seriously... can we really not run a 20 yard post route with paul, a deep comeback with kinnie, a deep out with cooper ? the "F"

Posted by: VincentFo on November 7, 2009 11:47PM CST
now that we are bowl eligible,we can now turn our sites on winning the North

Posted by: Miller on November 7, 2009 11:50PM CST
I came close on my prediction I said NU 13 & OU 10. What a win, the D not just the players with blackshirts the whole D side wins this game and deserves it. They have been the backbone of the Husker team this year, they come to play eveygame. My hats off to the Huskers as a team, but especially to the Defense!

Posted by: costamesahusker on November 7, 2009 11:54PM CST
i agree i cant post

Posted by: BrentHa on November 7, 2009 11:58PM CST
Hey Suh wee.........we get it... shawn watson makes more money making one bad play call than you do ringing up 100 customers at Wal Mart. But get over it. Watson aint going anywhere, and Alco rocks.

Posted by: Miller on November 7, 2009 11:58PM CST
good night all!

Posted by: Albino on November 7, 2009 11:59PM CST
Congrats to the Huskers. This may be the best defense ever! We've had great Ds in the past, but they had an offense to help them! If this offense ever gets going, we'll be a top ten team!

Go Big Red!

Posted by: costamesahusker on November 8, 2009 12:03AM CST
watson is not the problem....we all loved him last couple of years, untill now... gotta have the players exacute.. oline is not helping not to mention whoever is at qb

Posted by: bcpdad on November 8, 2009 12:04AM CST
IMHO

"zone blocking" DOES NOT work when you run the option. It is not the players it is the coaching. (Watch how much "zone blocking" GT and Navy use)

The problem our O (or O line) is having is that the plays that are being called do NOT match the FUNDIMENTALS required to make the play successful. You cannot expect a read option play to work if the O line is standing up and shuffling their feet sideways (zone blocking).

You CANNOT run a zone read play with NO threat that the QB is going to throw the football.

In both of these cases NU's offense tries to prove these FUNDIMENTALS wrong. WHHYYY?

COACHES are responsible for teaching FUNDIMENTALS!!!!

MY QUESTION IS, WHEN IS THIS GOING TO HAPPEN!!!!

Posted by: duke of omaha on November 8, 2009 12:04AM CST
One pass to a tightend,, TD..
Where have the TE's gone?

Posted by: bcpdad on November 8, 2009 12:10AM CST

Posted by: costamesahusker on November 8, 2009 12:10AM CST

I believe in our boys.

I believe in our system.

I believe next year our freshmen will be sophomores....

Posted by: StephenSt on November 8, 2009 12:14AM CST
Why play zac if we're going to run option, zone read, short passes (even moreso than we did with Green)? Zac threw a nice pass on the TD and the one to Kinney, but he was again was off the mark on the pitch and several throws. He also was horribly indecisive on all the running plays and one of the two sacks. What did Green do so wrong? And what did Zac do so right, other than managing 3 and outs without fumbling? The penalties put Green in a huge hole on 3 of his drives. He didn't get a fair shake and likely would have produced far more on the zone reads, option and the naked boots where Zac got stuffed every time. In short, are we stuck with Zac as our starter? Green's the future and now we're back to a horribly inept offense making no progress toward the future. Winning 2 of 3 relying on the D to not give up ANY big plays and put 10 points on the board every game is a stretch.

Posted by: StayTrue2NU! on November 8, 2009 12:17AM CST
i was just waiting for the PA pass off the i-form runs we were being succesful with... never happened ! why not ?? fake the run, spin around and have TE running a corner route 12 yards deep, and a WR running a deep post 20 yards deep. watch the stron safety if he bites on the post, hit the TE... if he helps over the top on the TE... hit the post. PA ensures the free safety moves up a bit and struggles back into coverage on left side but leaves post open over middle if strong safety bites TE route.
pretty basic play with a simple QB read on the strong safety. and ANY QB worth anything can make a 12 yard corner throw or a 20 yard post throw. qb may need 4 seconds of blocking , thats it. put a rb check down in just in case he doesn't get the 4 seconds.

Posted by: bcpdad on November 8, 2009 12:24AM CST
StayTrue2NU,

You are spot on. The problem is; Watson and the WCO (West Coast Offense) Boys are way to smart to run a simple play like that.

Posted by: JeffNe1 on November 8, 2009 12:24AM CST
StephenSt pretty much summed up my question. Based on the type of plays that were called, why wasn't Green the QB? It sure seemed like the play calling fit Green's skill set much better than Lee's.

I do disagree with the "bad pitch" comment. He hit Helu right in the hands. On the other hand, calling that play, at the time, was not wise.

Posted by: Joisey Husker on November 8, 2009 12:28AM CST
Like Cosgrove's defense of two years ago, I refuse to believe that there is no talent on this ineffectual offense.

Watson's offense produced a good amount of points and yardage at the end of the Callahan era, so we kept him. But that offensive potency was an illusion: our defense at that time allowed so many points, no opponent needed supreme effort from their defenses to beat us.

Now, here we are.

I'll say it again: Definition of insanity - doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results. And I'll say this again also: Imagine if you did your job (whatever that might be) and produced the same level of success that Watson does. I don't know about you, but I'd be fired.

Posted by: StephenSt on November 8, 2009 12:32AM CST
Jeff, the pitch was behind and hit Roy in the shoulder. He also pitched it way too early. Pelini ripped Lee a new one on the sideline, he didn't go after Roy.

StayTrue, I don't think our coaches have any confidence that we have a "QB worth anything" that can make those throws. Landry looked like Lee tonight, over-shooting those guys in the middle making it look like he threw it right to the safety. I'm getting a very strong feeling we've go no confidence in our o-line either (although, for the most part I thought they held up OK tonight in pass pro on about 9 of the 14 passes we attempted.

Posted by: Albino on November 8, 2009 12:33AM CST
Keep giving Green more experience and more latitude. This offense will begin to congeal.

GBR

Posted by: duke of omaha on November 8, 2009 12:39AM CST
Outside of the Bg12 champ. game, we shouldn't face that good of a D that OU had in the remaining games. That's the good news. I say run the power game with a bigger fullback. Legatte's a little small IMO.

Posted by: StephenSt on November 8, 2009 12:46AM CST
Joisey, our o-line has no chemistry (I say because Barney couldn't name starters, much less positions for a lot of guys until game week), Lee's accuracy has been awful, even on the simplest passes and we had no real threat at RB for the last 3 games. I agree, Wats seems to be playing scared, with no real bread and butter plays working right now, but there's some validity to his concern when Lee can't put a screen or a swing pass in front of a receiver and our RBs are being met in the backfield. Anyway, we're definitely in a slump, but it all starts with the o-line. With the pipeline, everyone in the world knew what ten to fifteen plays we were going to run, but it didn't really matter.

Posted by: StephenSt on November 8, 2009 12:51AM CST
Duke, agree, but the scary thing is we couldn't score on Baylor, ISU or TT either. KSU put up 30 on OU. The D scored all 10 tonight and it was only 10. We've scored 39 in 3 games. We're not going to win many games scoring 10 points no matter how good the D is and it seems to me, we just went right back to the same thing that wasn't working.

Posted by: Smallville on November 8, 2009 7:47AM CST
Beautiful job Blackshirts!!! Question... What in the heck did Green do wrong? I guess Lee was brought in to be more "productive?". How on earth can Bo go along with Watson's horrible decisions? It was sickening. I actually thought that Cody was going back in when Bo lost his mind on Watson and Lee. Heck, you could stick Sipple back there to be indecisive and take sacks. At least Cody was trying to win as opposed to trying not to lose.

Great defensive game. How much more exciting can it get!

One major question:

When will the penalties stop? These penalities hurt us game after game.

Posted by: rankrider21 on November 8, 2009 8:46AM CST
Here is something that is off the subject. On today Yahoo Front page there is a big story about Boise St. Everybody should read it.

It talks about how nobody and in particular Nebraska wont play Boise St. They aren't asking for anything but a fair shake when it comes to playing the big boys. I think as the most knowledgeable and respected fans in the the world that we would want to apply some pressure to Harvey about playing Boise St. ESPN has already said that the game would be national televised.

I know that Boise St. has probably one of the best coaches out there and Chris Peterson probably get more miles from his kids then anyone could but I see as hey it really could help us in recuiting and boy could we use the help in recuiting some offensive players with speed and size.

I don't know what the answer is I just know that they are looking to play somebody Sept. 3 and oh by the way we have an open date that weekend and look at our schedule next year can you say that it really is pathetic.

I don't know where it became wrong to challenge our kids and if they fail it was the end of the world. Because being the father of three boys I know that I need to challenge the boys all the time so that they will be perpared for what life throws at them when they leave. Yes I try and pick them up after they fail but I also expect them to rise up also.

Our football team is the same are we preparing them for the next level the ones who make it or are we setting them up for failure.

I think that we should email Harvey and Bo and tell them as fans we want a tough schedule and the BCS be dammed. I say bring on a play-off and get a true champion.

This is just my opinion and I don't mean to make anyone upset with this. I would just like to know how other people see this.

Posted by: huskermike on November 8, 2009 9:30AM CST
anybody but me notice bo yell at watson after the bad pitch? yes, the pitch hit him in the helmet or shoulder and was too hard. maybe bo is seeing that watson is a problem. really, an option to the short side with a qb that can't run?

Posted by: TruBlueRed on November 8, 2009 9:54AM CST
Rerun the play in slow mo, the pitch hit him in both hands

Posted by: TruBlueRed on November 8, 2009 10:01AM CST
The game plan was to not make mistakes ala OK QB throwing on a great D and getting 5 picks and losing the game. That was the reason Green got yanked, (he is not considered the greatest passer) & his running was not working either, I think one of the coaches said Green was "nervous in the service" ;) Remember OK's D is pretty comparable to ours and Stoops said they played a great game. O scored 10 on them, they only scored 3 on us, we win. O-Line and Receivers are going to take a year or so to get ironed out much like the defense last year was not up to the offense (same coaches). Have some patience and enjoy some great defensive battles for the rest of the season......they are more fun to watch anyway;)
