QB to visit NU next weekend
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on January 12, 2010 at 3:36PM CST
Brion Carnes, the quarterback out of Bradenton, Fla. and cousin of Tommie Frazier, is planning to visit Nebraska on Jan. 23.

The quarterback is committed to South Florida, which is having its own coaching drama with the firing of Jim Leavitt, but still has visits to NU and Western Kentucky slated before national signing day on Feb. 3.

Carnes, who attends the same Manatee High School that produced Frazier, was impressed by the Husker offense in the Holiday Bowl.

"I liked the way they used the quarterback in their offense," Carnes told Scout.com. "I can do a lot of the same things."

Concerning the situation at South Florida, Carnes also told Scout: "It's hard for me to go somewhere if I don't know who the coach is going to be."

Stay tuned.

He might as well commit to DONU, either way he is playing in Lincoln this year, might as well be on the winning team.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on January 12, 2010 3:42PM CST
Good point LCH, you should let him know that.

Posted by: Ray in Bellevue on January 12, 2010 3:45PM CST
Even if he commits to Nebraska, would Watson ever play him, anytime soon? The WCO takes 3-4 years for the QB to even get comfortable. We have a dysfuntional offensive that is better designed for pro football. This is a Callahan era holdover which will continue so long as Watson is OC. Hopefully, Watson will be gone after next year, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Ray

you're probably right but can you explain how Taylor came in and learned the same offense in 6 months and led this offense to a high ranking? Was he a genius or was it just luck?

IMO the coaches are better at doing what they do then we think. It would not suprise me to see Wats leave next year or the year after....but he will leave a proven winner and will leave for his chance to be HC......

While were at it go after some of the USC recruits since Carrol left.

There has to be lots of athletes waivering right now. Dont show any mercy Bo. Go get some more players.

Western Kentucky? A coachless South Florida? Really? Even if I take off my Husker goggles, this is a no brainer.

Posted by: Albino on January 12, 2010 4:00PM CST
It's nice to have him come from the same high school as TF, but it our competitors are W. Kentucky & S. Florida, I have to wonder how good he actually is.

The athleticism is there, I wonder if it's an academic thing or Mama saying you need to be close to home. Maybe Tommie's family will help ease the concerns if that's the case

He's a 4 star recruit, with plenty of other big time schools looking at him. He's just not looking at them.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on January 12, 2010 4:09PM CST
Pay no attention to Ray. He's a negative nancy and has no clue what he's talking about.

We no longer run the WCO ray. Get that through your thick skull. We run a spread scheme with WC principals. Meaning build the pass off the run and use short passes to open up longer ones later in the game.

Let me repeat for you, we do not run the WCO! The WCO does not line up in shot gun very often, does not run zone read plays, does not use the option, and def. does not let the QB run the way we want them to run.

Here's the School's that tried to recruit him. I think he would be a REAL Steal

South Florida COMMITTED
Cincinnati
Clemson
Nebraska Medium visits 01/23/2010
Western Kentucky Medium
Georgia
West Virginia
Florida State
Louisville
Miami (FL)
Middle Tennessee State
Notre Dame
UAB

According to Scout, Brion also had offers from Clemson, Georgia and Louisville. I can't say if he was offered at QB specifically from those schools, but they are high-profile nonetheless.

Posted by: Ray in Bellevue on January 12, 2010 4:12PM CST
Low Country Husker. I think Taylor ran the same offense in Junior College so he was more of a natural fit. Also, he was more mature than high school graduates and picked up things faster. Lee understands the system, but doesn't have the physical skills to make it work.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on January 12, 2010 4:15PM CST
Remember while there may be potential recruits available on the market because of coaching changes, we only have a limited amount of schollies to offer this year. I have heard around 18 is what we have available. We already have most of our verbal commitments, so we can only offer maybe one or two more. Bo has said he is not going to sign a QB just to sign a QB, but if a guy standouts enough, he will make an offer. I know he is looking at several QB possibilities.

You know every kid has a different learning curve. Some pick up things right away, and some take longer. Taylor was a good example of that. It probably took Ganz two years to get it down pat, but by the time he was a Junior he was ready.

Another example at another position is Burkhead, he picked up the offense very quickly, others like Robinson took a little more time.

Another examples for QB, although a different offense. Frazier was ready as a Freshman, and Turner Gill said he was not ready until he was a Soph. Scott Frost in his first year with us had troubles picking up the offense, but boy, once he learned the offense, he played great his Senior year.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on January 12, 2010 4:19PM CST
Ray

you could be right about Taylor I just remember a comment by Callisham that took credit for the success of Taylor, Kellar and Ganz because of his offense.....at the time everybody agreed how great it was. 3 QBs in an 18 month period with marked success, stats not wins are the sign of success right?

I understand what your saying but I choose to disagree that Wats is the only problem that caused the issues last hear.

Huskersincebirth2.

First of all, my comments are intended to get viewers thinking about how we can improve the program. If you think they are negative, then that is your problem.

Second, the offense that Watson is running is commonly referred to as the WCO. It may not be the pure form, but it's main focus is using short passes to move the ball. It is just the opposite of what you said. In other words, the passing game sets up the run, not the other way around.

It is true that the WCO does not use the zone read and option plays. That is a variation that Watson has experimented with this season, along with some other things out of necessity.

Now, if you want to criticize my comments or others, you can do so without using the phrases "negative nancy" whatever that means and "Get that through your thick skull." This blog is susposed to allow everyone to give their opinions without personal attacks from dissenters.

Thanks!

I can think of several words to describe Ray and his commitment to taking the critical stance but not in a million years would I call him a "negative Nancy" LOL

Posted by: JayBr on January 12, 2010 4:50PM CST
Taylor learned the WCO at a junior college? A junior college is a 2 year school. Why would they run an offense that takes 3-4 years to learn? I agree that Z Lee does not have all the physical tools to be perfect in our offense or any other in the country, but I would suggest that C Green backing up Z Lee had more to do with an inability to read defenses at the collegiate level than it did not being able to pick up the offense.

Posted by: Robert_Fl on January 12, 2010 4:54PM CST
Brion Carnes ended the Saint Thomas 33 game winning streak in the semi finals here in Florida -- he is a play maker.

Posted by: TruBlueRed on January 12, 2010 4:57PM CST
LCH, maybe not but he is consistently "negative Watson" LOL
BTW, from what I have heard the defense may be as tough to learn as the offense, thus the reason you are seeing a lot of D players spending more time in the film room. Different personnel learn at different paces regardless of O or D

Posted by: TruBlueRed on January 12, 2010 5:02PM CST
JayBr, exactly, that is why they limited CG to only a couple of reads when he went in. Lee is much better in that department.

Posted by: Outside The Box on January 12, 2010 5:02PM CST
Usually when I try to get folks thinking about how we can improve something, I try to get things started with a (hopefully positive) suggestion, not negative and derogatory statements.

But that's just me. To each their own.

Posted by: joe t on January 12, 2010 5:02PM CST
If special stud recruits want to come to Nebraska we WILL make room for them. That means dumping the dead weight, errrr, I mean "encouraging" players to seek playing time elsewhere or due to medical, i.e.:

Chris Williams left
Javario Burkes medical

There will be more PLUS always a surprise or two. Happens every year.

Posted by: Trashman on January 12, 2010 5:03PM CST
Ray doesn't like Watson? Huh, I never made the connection.

Posted by: Ray in Bellevue on January 12, 2010 5:05PM CST
TruBlueRed. You are right about me being consistently negative on Watson, and I will continue to criticize him until the offense consistently moves the ball for TD's, not FG's. Our offense looked better in the bowl game, but it still needs a lot of work. I would rather see a run oriented offense, but I am not against any offense that works consistently with the available personnel.

Posted by: joe t on January 12, 2010 5:07PM CST
The failure of the offense is 50-50 to blame. Wats needs to know his guys limitations and play to their strengths. The players need to learn the system and execute.

Wats still lacks the "bread and butter" play to find some identity. T.O. excelled due to repitition and execution and make sublte changes in the O as the year wore on. Wats has tried to throw the whole package together in the first 3 games of the year. It doesn't work that way in the college game.

Posted by: TruBlueRed on January 12, 2010 5:10PM CST
Ray, I too hope the O is consistent next year and I too liked what I saw in the bowl game, hopefully a preview of things to come next year!

Posted by: GBR in Texas on January 12, 2010 5:11PM CST
TBR is correct, the defense is most probably as difficult to learn as the offense. You can't be a 'dummy' in today's world of football. Well, I guess you can in a few spots but not many. Today's game requires players that can think on their feet...be able to make adjustments to adjustments, all while on the move and in action...that's both offense and defense. There's alot of maturity and trust that has to take place before any of this stuff works well.

Posted by: From The General on January 12, 2010 5:13PM CST
Is there a QB out there that Nebraska can recruit that actually will throw 1st & run 2nd?

Is this too much to ask for?

Posted by: Denver Bob on January 12, 2010 5:13PM CST
I hope that NU gets this kid. Some of you need to take your blinders off about Cody Green. Nobody, including me, thought that Cody would end up being a "project".

Posted by: HuskerBruin on January 12, 2010 5:24PM CST
Before we get too excited about Carnes, we should all know that the consensus on this kid is that he is extremely athletic, but very unpolished. He's definitely a redshirt guy. I think he would be a good get if for no other reason than we could move him to another position if he can't get the QB position down.

Personally, I like QB Darian Godfrey much much more. He's got the legs AND the arm, he led his team to a state title in TX and he was the 2009 POY for his class in TX.

GBR in TX

Yea, Pelini's defense is no piece of cake to learn......remember last year when he continually said the players weren't executing on D......this year the light came on for them as I suspicion it will for Lee (2nd yr) and the O next year. Injuries were a huge part of problem with O this year

Posted by: HuskerBruin on January 12, 2010 5:31PM CST
Note that NU hasn't offered Carnes a scholarship. We are considering three QBs for the 2010 class - Carnes, Kain Colter and Darian Godfrey. NU hasn't offered any of them.......yet.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on January 12, 2010 5:37PM CST
HuskerBruin, the Godfrey kid is a good one but I'm not sure how well he would fit into this offense. I believe Tulsa wants to make a receiver out of him, not sure what KSU's plans for him are.

TBR, I don't necessarily think that Bo's defense is all that complicated but the precision that he expects takes getting used to. Now that he has players that demand that precision of themselves, and their teammates, those that follow in their footsteps will keep those expectations high. I would venture to say that sometime in the near future the offense will get to that point. I think Bo expects that...I think he will demand that.

Rivals says that NU 'has' offered Carnes a scholarship.

Ray:

The fact is you are wrong with your comments. Your comments are intended to put people against one of the coaches on the team. We do not run the WCO like you say. We have elements of it in our offense, but we run a spread running scheme. Our first priority is run run run. It is not pass pass pass. If it was you would have seen more of that all year long. The WCO builds the pass off the run or vice versa, but the way we do it is to build the pass off the run. Also, the WCO does not use shotgun very much. For the most part it uses the I formation with an offset FB in the back field.

And if you know anything about sports you will know that it does not matter what scheme you run. Whether that be a triple option attack out of Wing T or if you run a spread attack out of the A-11 offense all it comes down to is execution.

You also fail to see that all season we had injuries. For almost every game we only had 5 healthy Offensive linemen (and how many do you use in a game?), our QB had a torn tendon in his throwing arm, and at one point in time we were using our 4th and 5th string IBs.

It is not the scheme that resulted in the offense struggling this year. And, I am tired of hearing that. Remember after the 2008 season when Watson was being courted by a number of teams to take a HC job everyone, even you!, were begging him to stay! You must look at the whole picture and see that there are some things coaches cannot control. One of those being injuries, like the ones we had to deal with this year. You saw what a healthy Husker offense could do in the Holiday Bowl, and despite what people may think, that Arizona defense was no push over.

Ray - Maybe it would be good to just chill on the whole Watson thing? Maybe just give this staff another year to see if they can gel and bring home some bigger trophies. No one thought we'd be National Champs this year.

If it doesn't work out to where the offense improves dramatically, then I would agree there should be some changes made. Of course Wats will be the likely candidate to be at the top of the list.

I just happen to think we're going to see a much improved offense this next season. If coaches are being scrutinized, then Barney is the one I'd like to see get his butt kicked out, or at least get it in gear. So goes the OL, so goes the offense.

On the subject of QB recruits - (which was the subject of this blog thread) Some of USC's commits seem to be wavering with Carroll's exit. Their 4* QB commit (Scruggins) could be another one we might have a shot with. He's apparently not too happy with the coaching change.

Are there any other schools that could fire a coach before signing day? lol

Coach or GBRTX, That's why I could never play your position QB, not for dummies? I too agree that there is some sophistication about evolving into a great QB at D1 ranks, and some accelerate faster when coming from what types of programs they played in for HS and the coaching, such as yourself as coach, they were exposed to during their HS days? If you come from the bigger stage of schools in TX as a QB, that is probably to your advantage, than a small rural school that doesn't bring you along in your skill sets as fast? Just my opinion?

I did go to a competitive bigger HS in OK, but at my time in HS, coaching didn't matter for the assistant's son, innate dummy, should have tried out for the movie with that title in it? But in recruiting for wrestling, sometimes we look for potential of development, when that athlete has the chance for growth, within a productive system of coaching, for success at university level, I imagine football has those gem athletes as well? Wow,
USC is having some problems getting someone to take their coaching vacancy.
You think the Trojan job would be the crème de la crème of college coaching jobs. There are reports that Steve Mariucci is interested in the job. He would be their third choice. Guess we know how that feels.

Posted by: Wrestler on January 12, 2010 6:11PM CST
TommyOC, to go after USC's athletes of a program in complete disarray, would be wise, as with Reggie thing I thing the hammer will be strong for violations? So the future is not looking good for those committed to that program, like the SMU thing of the past? GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

USC did get the lion's share of excellent athletes in Pac 10 before? Now more parity for that conference in the future I assume?

Nish, if I was a coach I wouldn't even consider that job... well, unless they wanted to pay me some ridiculous amount of guaranteed money and give me my own satr on the walkway. Sanctions along the likes that UDUBB went through are on the way I bet.

USC will could be back to their old mediocre 80's n 90's ways for at least a decade, maybe longer.

They won't get the death penalty like SMU, because I don't think the NCAA will ever do that again, but it won't be pretty either I bet.

Posted by: Ray in Bellevue on January 12, 2010 6:19PM CST
Huskersincebirth2.

Thanks for being more civil in your comments! And, we agree on more things than you realize.

You are right that execution is the key to any offense, no matter what the scheme. If we had the players, we could win with the wishbone.

You are also right about injuries, many of which the fans were not aware of, in the OL and with Lee, which affected the quality of play. Also, this was Lee's first year of playing Division 1 football, so there was a learning curve.

You are right that in 2008, Watson looked like a genius because he had Ganz, a 5th year QB, who had been in the system long enough to master the mental aspects and who also had the physical attributes to make it work.

But, if you go back to my original posting, before all of the rhetoric, I said that the WCO, or whatever you want to call it, under Watson takes the QB 3-4 years to get it down. That it was a holdover from the Callahan era, and that it was more suited to the pro game.

My point was that it takes too long for a QB to master it, to be effective at Nebraska. Also, that Watson is glued to this system, no matter what, and unless he can get some results soon, he should be long gone. Our offense should not be 102nd worst in the country under an OC who has had 4 years to recruit his own players, no matter what the excuses.

Now, if you think that I am wrong with my comments, fine. I respect your views. But, I would like to hear more about what you would do to improve the offense unless you are satisfied with the results from last season. Or do you think that things will naturally get better after one additional year?

If Watson can gear up the offense, I will be his biggest supporter, but if the offense sputters again this coming year like last season, I will continue to complain. And you should too.

I see no reason why Cotton and Evans could not be greyshirt guys if required to make room for some of the talent on the board. If some of these top rated recruits in positions of real need indicate they want to come to NU, I would hope Barney could suggest to the staff that he's good with something like this. From all I've heard, Evans is a real project, but might have the speed to become a valued guy at some point. I'm sure this staff is considering every angle right about now. Anyway, I hope they are.

I bet more comes out than just the Reggie thing, he wasn't the only player getting paid there or flirting with agents and w/e else.

Back in the day it first started at Udubb with I think it was Billy Joe Herbet or whatever his name was having some overpaid cushy job in the summer for a booster...something like that. I think complaining is pretty much what we all did when our offense found it's snail mode this past season. They have explained the reasons why they did it. We ended up 102 in D-1 more by design than anything. It would be nice to just allow this season to be at an end and give the coaches and players all the support they'll need to get it back on the right track for next season. I think they will definitely be pushing to improve the OL and the overall offensive production. I don't see the O becoming a pass happy TT like approach. Bo and Wats both want to be a strong running team. No need to panic about being 10-4 and North Champs in only this staffs second year, but hey, if they can't win the MNC this next year, I say we call for all their heads. lol - kidding of course.

Posted by: StayTrue2NU! on January 12, 2010 6:33PM CST
coach cotton's son should NOT warrant a scholarship ! it is STUPID... first... he's not good enough to use a schollie on when we need other things more badly than a lineman who might play 3 years down the road, second... his dad makes enough money coaching to put him through on his own dime plus I'm sure some kind of discount is assesed since he coaches here! he should absolutely volunteer the schollie for use elsewhere... imo. they can't do these things just to appease our love of Nebraska kids gettin to play... preferred walk-on and get another wr from florida or california w/ it! jeez...

Posted by: rluben on January 12, 2010 6:35PM CST
Hey Ray,

You know how I felt about things this year and how I wanted a more physical less finesse style of O, and still do, without losing the ability to go vertical or be explosive.

Well, I think we are going to get that, but it could take until mid year for it all to come together.

I just feel good about where it's headed, not sure why, but I do.

Maybe because Bo's in charge and Homey don't play that lose by one point crap when your D is playing lights out.

He's much too competitive not to get it fixed and running on all cylinders, or at least light a fire under that entire side of the ball... coaches down to the last player on the scout team O.

Heck, Bo will get in the waterboys' face if he isn't getting it done right.

Bo no likey to lose.

Posted by: TommyOC on January 12, 2010 6:38PM CST
I got no problem with Cotton's kid's getting schollies, but I do wish he'd just teach them how to block so they don't get our QB killed. lol Cotton's boy should get a greyshirt and if he's worthy of the full ride after year one, give it to him. We need some room for this class. 18 ain't enough with what's still out there for us. We have some serious need for playmakers.

Good advice Rluben, I will try! Maybe her cold is my pneumonia, well worse ways to go I suspect?

Rluben good seeing you here and your perspectives on Husker football? If offense evolves moreso, like you and No and others want it, with that stellar D watch out, see the 90's possibly returning to Huskerland, do you think?

I just honestly, hope for two Big Reds again, at the top of the food chain in Big 12 and country, like old Big Eight days? Yes, a Okie at birth liking NU, could be worse, a Okie at birth liking UT? See always worse things? GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

btw... sounds like next years recruiting class could end up being epic ! already 2 o-lineman on board who figure to be 4 and a 5 star players respectively, then a qb from dallas that LOVES us and looks to be a 4-5 star kid, add in Aaron green who will undoubtedly be a 5 star! NICE !! and more will follow.... players look and see 4 5 star guys on your board to start and wanna be a part of that. wr's fall in, defensive guys will still wanna come to continue the tradition after another great year from the BOfense. lookin at a top class there guys...

When USC actually gets put on probations I will actually believe in miracles. Some of the stories I have heard about USC football and how they take care of their players (Bush), if they don’t get put on probations then no school other should ever be put on probation. The NCAA has a list of untouchables and UCS is top of the list. If the NCAA didn’t or wouldn’t find anything wrong with Miami in the 80’s then maybe USC has nothing to be worried about. The NCAA not being able to find something wrong with Gangster U or USC would be like going into a brothel and not being able to find someone having sex. That dog don’t hunt!

I don't know, I still scratch my head sometimes wondering why they didn't redshirt Cody when he just played a token amount plays this year and Latravis Washington could have easily done the exact same thing with one eye shut....maybe two.

Just boggles my mind what the thinking was there with wasting a year of eligibility was. I don't see it as much more experience than he could have got going more good on good than they do and a little more scrimmaging.

At least Bo says they plan on doing more of that next year in practice to make them more competitive and more physical.

Got to go to school heading for 9 am Wed. morning in HK. 10 degrees Celsius this morning, chilly, like 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Later, Big Dogs!

Wrestler,

Did you send me anything about lifting?

This qb sure looks like he had some people trying to recruit him.

How much room do we have left? Not much I am guessing.

Posted by: Wrestler on January 12, 2010 6:57PM CST
BR, got to go, but yes in your personal box I replied to one of your letters and put info in for you, we can continue with ongoing dialogue over time for workouts etc.

Got to run, no sorry I ride my bike to school? GF drives her Mini and I ride a bike (bicycle) what's this world coming too? Woman Power! GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

OK, I'm back. Who's still in the neighborhood? We're having a cultural diversity night at school, so the superintendent came to speak. I'm dumb but I'm not stupid, he knows I was there and laughed at the appropriate times.

Posted by: rluben on January 12, 2010 7:10PM CST
If I may, I'll offer smoe lifting advice.

When picking up a keg use your legs, not your back. And if you are toting a couple 24 packs, carry one in each hand to balance things out, don't try to carry them both tucked under your arm and on your side...unless you have woman hips...then I suppose it's ok.

I hope that helps a little.

Oops! Sorry I missed you Professor.

Nish, I think the NCAA found that the 'death penalty' that they dished out to SMU turned out to be much harsher than they had intended. Truth be told they probably could have slapped the entire Southwest Conference with the same penalty at that time. They were all playing the 'bidding wars' game with cars, cash and women. The stories I've heard...

Posted by: GBR in Texas on January 12, 2010 7:20PM CST
What's goin' on rluben? I hope the LJS 'blog police' were able to sniff out a way to end what took place last night. I'm more than a little uncomfortable with people saying things using my name. Maybe I'm a little paranoid, but teachers get fired for things that turn up online that are found to be distastful, even if you weren't the one who said it. I'm sure they would say 'well, you shouldn't have been on a public forum.' This is the only thing like this that I partake in, I'd hate to have to give it up.

Posted by: TommyOC on January 12, 2010 7:21PM CST
Yeah, I'll believe USC will suffer any real consiquences when it actually happens. Until then, I'll just hope they are made to pay for their sins. They have been quilty of a lot of infractions and Pistol Pete just continued to turn his head the other way the entire time.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on January 12, 2010 7:25PM CST
I don't see anything major being thrown at USC. Maybe a couple 'hail Mary's' and a slap on the wrist with a ruler. If the NCAA hasn't done anything to Lane Kiffin and the Vols program after they just basically turned their nose at the NCAA, well I just don't see them doing much to USC.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on January 12, 2010 7:32PM CST
TOC, I wasn't there for the whole thing, 16 yr old needed my laptop. The consensus is that the former BRG, who took on several different names after being banned, came on and figured out a way to copy individual blog names and avatars and was posting under those names. He was using several names and then settled on mine. I'm not sure how long it lasted after I left around 7:30, I didn't make it back until this morning. But it looked like it went on until around midnight. He had posted something on the main page under my name that I wasn't too thrilled with at the time.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on January 12, 2010 7:33PM CST
dbp, it was reported that his name was on the list. Did something happen that I don't know about? It's still me btw.

ESPN is reporting that USC has contacted Boise State's Peterson.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on January 12, 2010 7:40PM CST
TommyOC...typically I don't make disparaging remarks but at some point I posted "Why am I having 4th grade flashbacks?" I think that might have steered him my way, so I guess I should blame myself for that one.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on January 12, 2010 7:43PM CST
To answer your question, finally, TommyOC...no, it wasn't my real name but the blog name with the same avatar. Not sure how I would have handled it if he had divulged my real name and used it.

GBRTEX. BRG was several different folks last night. Me, you Low, even rluben. Fact is Rluben was agruing with Rluben for a while. Victoria was made aware of it by several of us.

They are working on the tech thing that allowed that to happen. Meantime I think he is gone again as I checked and several of his ramblings pretending to be other are gone.

I have asked the LJS legal staff to check into it as I feel that he may have violated some privacy laws or something. Probably not but, like you, I was not happy. At the very least he was guilty of slander and misrepresentation.

Posted by: Silicon Valley Husker on January 12, 2010 7:54PM CST
GBR....it got much worse than 4th grade later in the night. I think Victoria got more than a few complaints. I think SFH was off the meds for a few days.

Ray....and others....I remember seeing one of TV show clips (can't remember the name of it..something show in Lincoln) and they interviewed Damon Benning, who was very well spoken. They asked him about the offense being too hard to learn and he said that this was greatly exaggerated. He didn't feel that was a problem today.

I think its more likely that at a D1 level at most schools, a freshman or soph is usually not ready to start. Even Barkley at USC struggled greatly this year and his prep pedigree was pretty outstanding. Gabbert had a decent year but struggled some and he was a soph. I find it more likely that Cody is a great athlete but not quite in the category of people who are ready to make a huge contribution as a freshman. If Barkley just got by this year with the power of USC (and a Pac 10 schedule) behind him, that tells me something. Their offense isn't overly complex and they dumbed it down for him. He got outplayed by redshirt freshman Luck against Stanford.

I think Zac was still adjusting to Div I and B12 speed and the injury. The more I look back at the rebound when healthy, the less I put this on Wats.

I called Kiffin last night on the Carroll thread (or was it BRG under my name?). I wasn't entirely serious......man, Tennessee must feel burned.

Just a comment on Brion Carnes. I live in Florida and saw him play in the 5A championship game. This guy is a great athlete but a true QB he is not. Some of his passes were Mickey Joseph like, as in bounces to the WR's. Personally would like to see Godfrey myself.

i say take them all including the colorado qb,they are all athletic enough to switch positions if qb doesn't work out. also with academic casualties, etc. we can get creative with the scollys. overbook like the airlines..we can squeeze them in or ask others to get out.what about guys like cruz barret and the tall receiver from texascan't think of his name, that never plays. they are still senior projects? i say make room....,,

Just a tip I am in my office, at school and when I first came on as like GBRTX or Coach, this is the only blog in my life, I have ever partaken in and with GF/KW and me, we have some private concerns for our lives etc.

And so with my dad's help in setting this up, I used a friend of his from the past living and working here in China in business, of course he was in on this also. So any info goes to a email box registered to him that we both can access! I knew, we didn't want to give up our privacy, for a myriad of reasons, to ones like him or worse yet, ones you never hear on here, but are lurking for the wrong motives?

I know in some things I do, you can never be too careful, if you want to protect loved ones etc. So we are very guarded, but knowing these things, then we can enjoy those that are decent and good people, as most are at least discussing on here? Got to go?

Sorry I missed you GBRTX or Coach earlier? PT, it seems to me, last night has slander tones, as he personifies others in his comments, giving the appearence that it comes from those select people? I think you have some real legal issues, with his false impersonations of others? Way out of bounds, for a public sports blog? GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

Always watch your back, in the crazy society, we live in today, throughout the world? Now protecting privacy issues, doesn't mean being deceitful, as others suggest on here also? I am many things wrong, but not deceitful is one of them, just careful?

LOL, that thread last night was a classic. I wasn't paying attention and thought for a second PT and GBRTX and a few others were on Lube. Didn't make sense, but I was ready to throw down for a second.
Kiffin to USC, with Monty and Chow in tow. This season has been a freak show coach wise.

For all of those hammering on Watson and the offense, a perspective from an old HS QB and college RB: It's the offensive line and the execution!!! QB's can find open receivers if they have time, but it is really hard to do when you have to run for your life. I can guarantee you that running backs have a lot more fun when the OL opens nice holes to run through.

The OL takes the longest time to put together and is the most complex of all. The Husker OL definitely struggled at times this past year due to inexperience, injuries, etc. With the complex defenses, you and the player next to you have to make adjustments nearly every play. If you and each of your partners are not on exactly the same page and paragraph, someone will get killed. Usually a QB or RB.

This is why I hope BO grabs another monster O lineman rather than a 6th scholarship QB. How many QB's can you play at a time, anyway? Usually not more than three in a season. Right now the Huskers have at QB: Two (?) seniors, three sophomores, a redshirt freshman and possibly some walkon's. As for the OL, usually about 10 to 15 will get significant playing time during a season.

You do not need superstuds at QB if you have superstuds in the OL, as Tom Osborne so ably demonstrated for 25 years. But you definitely need QB's who can read and adjust to defenses. Neither Alabama nor Boise State have superstuds at QB, but they went 28-0 this past season. Both QB's were sophomores. Both of their OL's did a nice job. The Boise QB heading into his junior year is 26-1 as a starter, he can't run worth a darn, and doesn't have the strongest arm either. But what he can do is read defenses like a comic book, lay the ball in the hands of open receivers and check off plays.

Posted by: huskersincedevaney on January 13, 2010 11:57AM CST
I pretty much echo the sentiments of Huskersince birth 2. Watson is a darn good OC. When BC was here, he was definitely calling the shots on offense. When Bo became head coach, then Watson and Bo started working together on where they wanted too take this offense and it is still a work in progress as they keep "tweaking" it until they get it too where Bo wants it which will probably be another version of a spread option, but at any rate it will be multiple which is good as far as I am concerned. What happened on offense last year was a direct result of inexperience and injuries and Wats did what he had to do and he did a good job. This was only the 2nd year for this coaching staff and you better believe Bo knows where he is going with this offense and when they have been here long enough to have recruited their own players and they get through "tweaking" and the players learn and become experienced with Bo and Watson's offensive system, it will be darn good and fun too watch. It takes players suited for the style of offense Bo wants to run, the players buying into the system and becoming experienced in the system, execution and also recruiting "difference makers". It all takes time. I remember well how TO ran the power I/option for years and had trouble beating good teams and then he changed defenses from the 5/2 too a 4/3 and in the 90's recruited gobs of difference makers on both sides of the ball and then reeled off 3 N/C's. Like Barry Switzer used too say, Its not the x's and O's (schemes), its the Jimmies and Joes...(difference makers.) I think everyone should quit ragging on Watson or the scheme and just be patient and let the coaches do their thing. I for one am excited about the future of Husker football.
