Predictions: Huskers-Tigers
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on October 7, 2009 at 2:17PM CST
When I looked at this schedule in the summer offseason, I circled this game at Missouri as the biggest on Nebraska's schedule. My tune remains the same. Win this game and there's going to be some kind of special buzz in Lincoln this October. Win this game and Nebraska has some kind of momentum.

Lose this game and... well ... they're 3-2 overall, probably out of the rankings and playing from behind in the Big 12 North race.

I think Nebraska wins this game. I think this team is much better than I thought before the season started. But I'm not ready to declare that with much bravado until I see what they do Thursday. The Virginia Tech game was a solid showing, but still a loss. This is a hurdle game for this program. Nebraska is just 2-17 against Top 25 teams in true road games since Tom Osborne coached. Nebraska needs to show it can close the deal on the road. I think they do this time.

I'll say Huskers 31, Tigers 23.

Rain might add some more drama to the occasion. Also, how ready is Roy Helu after a bout with the flu? Some things to consider.

What say you?

I really like our chances down in the Zou this time around. Through rain, sleet or snow, Mr. Helu will deliver.

While I believe the Huskers will make it into the endzone a few time in this game I still see Mr Henery kicking for 3 at least one time Thur nite.

We will get pressure up front. The difference this year is that we will not have blown coverage from the back 7.

First pass of the game to Maclin, nobody covered him, TD, ring any bells?

Also we have faster LBs than we had last year.

I think the Yankees will win tonight and the series in four. But the Twins are plucky and should have a nothing-to-lose attitude. I also think it's beneficial that Minnesota has been playing do-or-die baseball for two weeks while the Yanks have been coasting. I just hope the kid holds up well tonight under the hot lights.

This game is HUGE for Nebraska! The VaTech game was a punch in the gut, if we lose this one, it will be like being shot in the gut! A slow, painful death.

We will give up a couple of big plays on defense and special teams. However, two or three picks will happen due to Dennard and Asante. Defense will win this one.

Twins were celebrating last night like the had won the World Series. They used lots of pitchers, have a short turn around, facing Sabithia, I think Yankees win, 6-2.

This is a tough game to predict. Mizzou will have a couple of big plays, and probably score a TD off one, but I really do not see them slowing the offense down. I think Helu drives them nuts, then Burkhead comes in to break their hearts...

Nebraska, leading 28-24 late in the fourth, lets Missouri drive from their 20 down to the 10 yard line. 1st and goal. Gabbert gets pressured by Suh and throws his second pick of the game. Offense takes over and runs 10 straight running plays and scores with 1 minute left to go up 35-24 in the pouring rain. You can tell Missouri players are spent and Husker leave town with the win.

Posted by: Blackshirtbacker on October 7, 2009 2:59PM CST
Since Nevada should have had 28 points, and one game winner Bowling Green scored 20, maybe Nebraska will end up at least in the 20's, or more likely low 30's. MU struggles to get out of the teens. Remember the weather will not be good for this one which will hold the score down some. Good thing NU is pretty good up front on both sides of the ball.

I think in order for NU to win this game the offense has to put points on the board, and watch the penalties, they cannot rely on Henery's foot this time. I have faith in the D, (as I say a silent pray, please don't let me down). Win the flipping game and shut the tigers up and their fans!

Posted by: Islander/Husker on October 7, 2009 3:21PM CST
Last night on the "Big Red Wrap up" on Nebraska Educational Television, they had TO as the main guest. He said our defense has made a huge jump from 2007. One comment he made that stuck out. He said the players on defense are much more fundamentally sound than what he saw in 2007 and play with much more passion. While we all can see that, it does show that he did not have a high regard of KG as for as a OC or his coaching skills.

The Huskers have a lot of non seniors playing and so does MU but Nebraska has played good, hard football in all four games.....Missouri has just got by because of their compeitition. Our schemes are better, our talent is better, and our coaches are better than misery. Nebraska rolls by at least two scores.

Huge win! For Huskers as it won't entirely be easy in atmosphere at Columbia, but a great win NU 38 Mizzou 27 launching NU on the way to a North Division title and a even larger victory in a upset of UT in Big 12 Championship! GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

The biggest concern that I've heard from the Missouri fans is that the rain will keep making their crack pipes go out.

Posted by: Miller on October 7, 2009 3:35PM CST
IH they are horrible here, and I hate being in this area and having to listen to it. I just keep building my co-workers confidence that MU will win. I can't stand them, and they have only been winning the past 6 years, MU will never produce a National Championship team, but they will settle for the Big 12 North championship and brag about it, its a good thing but you can't settle for that, NU will go all the way to the top in the next year or so.

Miller, this year the tables will be turned and your victory will be exacted tomorrow evening. And a huge win in Columbia sends Huskers on their way for a North Division title. And who knows what can happen in a Big 12 Championship game? Upset NU over UT? So your desires could come to realization somewhat this year? GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

Posted by: Low Country Husker on October 7, 2009 3:46PM CST
So Wrestler what happens if UT doesn't make it the B-12 will NU automatically be crowned champion or will they still have to play that game......just messing with you....tired of hearing how only Texas and Florida have a chance to be anything this year. From where I sit OK and OK Lite are undefeated in B-12 play and have the chance to knock UT off it's pedestal. Nothing is carved in stone. If the media darlings don't lobby then it is very possible that neither Florida, USC or UT will be in the NC. I will let these guys compete on the field because I'm not convinced the top 5 now will be the top 5 in December. Okay I'm done talking.

Posted by: cuddyshack67 on October 7, 2009 3:47PM CST
"Nice catch Matt."

It's no Flea Kicker, but O'Hanlon seals the game for the Big Red with a spectacular INT as Mizzou is driving late.

21-10 final after the Tiger's score an early TD but find yardage difficult to come by for most of the game. Helu gains 150 yds on 25 carries and garners game MVP after his 2 TD performance. Lee is a steady 15 of 25 for 200 yds and manages the game well.

But it's the Husker defense who deserve much of the credit after hounding Blaine Gabbert with 3 sacks as well as several hurries and hard hits that ultimately result in 2 INTs and a lost fumble. Throw the bones and celebrate those well-deserved Blackshirts when they are handed out next week!!!

IH one better than that assuring a Husker win now that is perfection! But you're right a big stage with two good teams and winner taking a big step (Still KU in wings) towards winning the North division title, perfection is in the desired outcome? GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

Posted by: fleaflicker on October 7, 2009 3:50PM CST
Oklahoma has to be the most unluckiest teams this year. I cannot believe how many of their good players are on the side line in street clothes. A team can handle some of that but too many losses and I think the team chemistry changes and a team can struggle.....OU will rebound Wrestler....Coach Stoops won't have it anyother way.

Posted by: Ray in Bellevue on October 7, 2009 3:51PM CST
I think Nebraska will have trouble winning a night game at Missouri, where hardly anything good happens. The teams are evenly matched and the advantage has to go to the home team. Having said that, it is a season changer for both teams, and Nebraska is about due for a break there. But, you never know. Remember all of the years Nebraska would come from behind to somehow beat them at home. Maybe, Missouri has that same edge now, with wins the past 2 outings at Columbia. Let's hope not.

Posted by: Wrestler on October 7, 2009 3:55PM CST
Fleaflicker, thanks appreciate your comments, no excuses from me you play with the players you have and win or lose that is the virtual outcome. But a rash starting before BYU game with TE, everyone talks about Sam of course, but TE is 2nd biggest loss on that O and now WR receiver leading country in TD's coming into Miami game? But Fleaflicker they have a problem bigger than their injuries that would have doomed them in some big games and that is their Oline subpar very poor at times.
So not OU's year feel sorry for Sam and TE maybe looking back should have gone on into NFL? No spilt milk for me as Huskers are rising to take the mantel maybe this year in a huge win in Columbia and beyond! GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

Posted by: Wrestler on October 7, 2009 4:00PM CST
Yes if I miss on this one Miller, GF might not marry me? Just teasing, but still upset with me that I declared a victory in our VT game too early as I didn't see 80 yd pass coming at end of the game? I don't know if you ever choose for a loss in a game but how we lost with our total domination and then a big play ending, and now VT looking good really I think is the receipe for success throughout rest of the season! Meaning huge confidence est. after that game in spite of the loss for team and staff as well. And now seeing just how good VT can be also? GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

Posted by: Huskerzone on October 7, 2009 4:02PM CST
OMG, Wrestler, you sound just like my neighbor another OK fan. As we were watching the OU-UM game last Saturday he said "you lose players to injury, that's football".

Posted by: fleaflicker on October 7, 2009 4:03PM CST
Wrestler....As a fan, before the decline, it was easy to look ahead and think about winning Championships every year. I am really enjoying the rebuilding process and know that it is a process that can take some time. So I try not to look ahead as far......I try not to take anything for granted anymore. But the Huskers are capable of winning every game that they play in this year......as long as the process is not broken.

RayinBellevue right as your not in Chicago now or LA? Your tempered caution is warranted as I understand, but this NU team is special this year I can feel it, enjoy the ride, don't worry so much that you can't stop and smell the roses along the way? My mom always said to me when setting your goals remember to enjoy the process as much as the obtainment and you will max in life what it has to offer! Mom had all the brains as I didn't but TG she was my mom! GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

Posted by: Miller on October 7, 2009 4:10PM CST
I think this team is very special also, and think that they could go very far this year, I just think it is so much more nerver racking for this MU game because I live around and work with fans, they are the most mouthy fans to boot!

Posted by: Wrestler on October 7, 2009 4:13PM CST
Fleaflicker, on our side of regular season why can't Huskers win out if garnered a win in Columbia? KU will be a challenge but TT and OU are not the teams they were last year not even close! In fact I will root for Huskers against OU this year for the greater good of my two teams, do not want OU to be a spoiler type of thing? But I see us running the table for North title, yes beating UT in a championship game looms difficult but it they stay undefeated in south in 2nd place and Huskers do upset them and have only loss to VT they way they did? And VT and Boise State stumble and SEC can only send one to NC, stranger things have happened? Meaning everthing is still in front of Huskers for desired results, take them one at a time and we will see how this season unravels maybe into a dream season for Big Red, and Coach Bo and Huskernation? GBR! Zhou Da Hong! P.S. It starts in Columbia tomorrow night!

Posted by: RockHusker on October 7, 2009 4:13PM CST
My wish is NU 27 - MU 17. I know overall we have the better team. But down there who knows how the ball will bounce. We stop number 81 and I am sure we can win the game. But we have match up issues with his size. I think we may have something special planned, that is why I think Dennard will be playing corner to start the game. GO HUSKERS!

Huge win in Columbia and this could still be a very magical season ahead! CAN YOU FEEL THAT BLOOD AND PAIN! GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

Posted by: Miller on October 7, 2009 4:19PM CST
One of my biggest worries in this match up tomorrow night is the way the ref's make their calls, they were awful last year in more than one game and they weren't making calls for NU. I know that is stupid but it only takes one bad call and it could change the whole game. I definitely don't trust the ref's after last years crappy calls!

BRG, your very astute and I think Roy and Rex have to have big games also for our D meaning with more ball possession time and clock mgmt. it rests our D gives them fewer touches on O so puts more pressure on their QB to make it happen and with a rested D to some degree more intense pressure on him as well. Running game as Nevada did is crucial in many ways, Nevada showed us a way to effect Misery's offense just didn't have good enough team to carry it out? We do! GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

BRG :) Hell I'm pitting out thinking about this game. It's a combination of things but I just don't like Missouri and I don't have any respect for them either. There's no reason that when they've beaten us that they didn't take the high road and be classy about it......but no, their QB has to make false accusations and show us a total amount of disrespect. Their fans have always been hateful. That's ok......that's their choice. Now we choose to go to Columbia and play our best game so far and put the Big XII North's order back to where it belongs.

GBR!!

BRG, I do more than just scream at the TV, my kids know a whole new language and say it better than I do now. I get down on my knees and pray and cry all at the same time, with a cigy and a drink in each hand. I hate losing to MU also, gosh I hate MU and mostly their fans!

Posted by: Wrestler on October 7, 2009 4:42PM CST
BRF so my love for Big Red gives me a great mind and my love for Sooners gives me what a so so mind? So average between two minds, math problem I guess I got an OK above average but not great mind? No wonder GF calls me knucklehead (thanks to GBRTX)? GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

Posted by: Miller on October 7, 2009 4:44PM CST
BRG, I love the Big Red so much that I actually get in trouble with the hubby over it. I may not be a passionate person but the Huskers are my passion! Does that make sense? Hmm!

Posted by: Wrestler on October 7, 2009 4:46PM CST
Fleaflicker, when the juxtaposition happens tomorrow night between NU and Misery rest assured with Coach Bo at the helm this won't be a temporary thing, it will be for a long time!
BRG sorry not BRF? GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

Posted by: huskers4_eva on October 7, 2009 4:47PM CST
Bo and company will have this team ready to play. Im seeing a lot of close scores, but I see it in nebraska's favor easily. NEB 41 MU 24

Posted by: rluben on October 7, 2009 4:48PM CST
BRG it's time we put the past in the past.

Hey I was an ass to you, I admit that...it's because I was operating under a wrong assumption about you and your motives.

I was wrong, I admit that now and can man up on that deal.

You have great passion and are fun to interact with on the board.

Let bygone's be bygones.

My bad dude.

Just don't go bet the farm wrestler...literally, don't bet the pig farm man.

Busie will be mad as heck if you lose her god pig on a bet.

Posted by: Wrestler on October 7, 2009 4:51PM CST
BRG, I understand it is ok not to like for me not so odd. Big 8 days and mutual respect thing. And as a preschooler lived in Lincoln so first team to watch Big Red, I have family in both states so midwest kid loving both storied programs? When OU and NU played year after year at Thanksgiving it was special and nation was focused on those two teams. With most OU fans mutual respect for NU with UT mutual hatred and with Okie Lite like a nagging kid brother concept. But you can hate OU just don't hate me would be fine? GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

Posted by: rluben on October 7, 2009 4:53PM CST
ooh, guess I should have made that alien glow louder, can hardly see it in the thumbnail pic.

Posted by: Wrestler on October 7, 2009 4:54PM CST
Rluben, Gofor2 now we enjoy a cool relationship together sends me letters from time to time, he is always after Busiekcreek to relent and use her piggy for a pig roast? I get a kick out of that? I got a pic of her feeder pig now not so small? I will put on avatar next couple of days for you? GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

Posted by: Miller on October 7, 2009 4:54PM CST
Well I had to go out and buy another TV years ago and lock myself in a room to watch a NU game, my hubby would leave the house so he didn't have to listen to my language and deal with my drinking. I can control the drinking the language just rolls off my tongue without me even knowing it. I feel bad about, but I don't have the camera on me so a few F bombs aren't going to hurt and I am sure at those moments the good lord is hearing those same words thoughout the husker fans! LOL!

Posted by: Wrestler on October 7, 2009 4:57PM CST
Mller the good lord knows your heart that is what matters we all are not perfect you know, and getting to know you on here, I also know you're part of what makes the Huskernation so special! Stay the way you are Miller, class on the blog! GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

Posted by: rluben on October 7, 2009 5:02PM CST
Ok cool BGR, glad that's behind us.

Like I said before, there's alot of really cool folks on this n blog...I now include you amongst those ranks in my mind. Not that that means a whole lot, but it is what it is.

This blog is a little more than just the Huskers, it's about the devoted passionate that follow them too.

Heck driveby and huskertherapist are even decent folks, and the blog wouldn't be the same without their slapstick humor.

Ernie's pretty dang funny too.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on October 7, 2009 5:02PM CST
man all this Husker Love flowing on this blog I'm ready to sing Kum Bi Ya.....everyone in the key of "C"....a 1 and a 2 and a 3....wonderful, wonderful,wonderful.................LOL

Posted by: Wrestler on October 7, 2009 5:03PM CST
Now Rluben and BRG maybe you two are Okies, in disguise sounding a little bit cherokee to me? Glad you both can get along as both of you have a lot to bring to this blog for sure! We need everyone in tandem as we go down this path of success! Now BRG I will root for NU this year over OU, but never root for UT over OU in Red River Shootout, hope you can understand that one? If OU never wins again except 1 no make that 2 games this season let it be UT and Okie Lite! GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

Posted by: Miller on October 7, 2009 5:04PM CST
Thanks wrestler I am trying!

Sure would be nice if redinbend or is it redinguam now would pop in and say hi, let us know how he's doing and if he's getting his Husker fix.

And is Newfie deployed, haven't seen him on in a long time?

Posted by: Wrestler on October 7, 2009 5:05PM CST

Posted by: Wrestler on October 7, 2009 5:10PM CST
Now LCH when GF gets up I will show her your avatar, now that one she will like and Lady Busiekcreek will despise? Guess you will have to change depending on what women are on? GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

Does Laner or Taco ever come out and blog, I haven't seen them in ages?

Posted by: rluben on October 7, 2009 5:12PM CST
ESPN sure doesn't mention our matchup a whole lot on College Football Live, maybe they are saving that for tomorrow's show.

Just a brief mention and a spot promoting the game.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on October 7, 2009 5:12PM CST
story of my life LOL

Posted by: Wrestler on October 7, 2009 5:14PM CST
Yes GF has an affinity for ugly? Maybe a guilt thing? TG for her feelings as that helps me and my cauliflower ears? Sadly we will miss the big game it is our Fri. morning and I have lecture classes to do and she has a morning fashion meeting to attend. So hope all is happy when we check the gameday thread later on? GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

Posted by: rluben on October 7, 2009 5:17PM CST
Saw Laner once and taco maybe once.

Laner mentioned something about a new job or business that was keeping him really busy or some reason why he couldn't be around much. But was with us in spirit.

Posted by: Wrestler on October 7, 2009 5:17PM CST
Laner and Taco? I haven't seen either? But I am hit and miss also Miller so not for sure? Haven't seen Snow Bunny recently on here? Is she going to the game? GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

Posted by: Silicon Valley Husker on October 7, 2009 5:18PM CST
Wrestler, I was saddened to see you pick Air Force over my Navy team on last week's thread. Sad only because I knew you would be wrong...7 straight over USAFA for my mids.

Posted by: Miller on October 7, 2009 5:20PM CST
I did see Snow bunny out one weekend, but I wasn't on for long!

I have seen Newfie once since he returned, after a year long deployment he is maybe spending lots of time with the wife and kids.
But he did say he was coming to the NU/OU game this year before he left last year.

Posted by: rluben on October 7, 2009 5:26PM CST
err...I mean sandwiched.

He'll be wishing his toes were in the sand on some tropical beach instead of seeing stars on a football field and big monsters with Big scary N's on their helmets.

Posted by: Wrestler on October 7, 2009 5:26PM CST
Silcon, good hearing from you and yes saw where you were a submarine guy? I couldn't do that type of work claustrophobia would get to me? But thanks for your service I appreciate it! Oh, we took a trip one time for GF's business to a city called Zhanjiang China south of Guangzhou, southern most city in mainland China. A port city. And I saw a lot of Chinese Navy ships around and someone told me where most concentrated subs are located in China as well? In fact we were eating at a Pizza Hut, and some US marines came in from Japan doing joint exercises with Chinese navy?
As for AFA got attached to them from coaching at OTC in Springs for several years so sorry! Your turn now I suppose, but in days of DeBerry AFA ruled for many years also. GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

Posted by: Wrestler on October 7, 2009 5:31PM CST
Now for anyone editing my transmissions just a sports blog in general not caring about deployment of Navy ships ok? Got to cover my pigot somewhat? Never know? GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

Posted by: Silicon Valley Husker on October 7, 2009 5:35PM CST
Wrestler...yeah, DeBerry had our number. All service academies are going to get basically the same caliber athletes, so scheme and coaching win. Thankfully, Paul Johnson was the clear scheme/coaching winner the last 7 years and his successor was a disciple.

Modern US subs aren't as bad as the WWII boats many people have toured. They would have been a real chore to serve on. Modern is bigger and more comfy. Practically Club Med..well maybe not. Didn't realize our Navy and China's had done any joint exercises. Last "joint" exercise I remember was when they bumped one of our P3s, forced it to land and held the crew for about a week, oh maybe 5 years ago. Glad I wasn't in that joint exercise!

To back up Wrestler,...its nothing that satellites haven't already seen. :) Thanks for your appreciation...We worked hard on the sub, but very different from the folks today who are playing in the sandbox. They have my unwavering respect.

Posted by: Wrestler on October 7, 2009 5:41PM CST
Yep I remember that incident, yes now some joint exercises as I was surprised also but quite a few marines at that city and they are based out of Japan. And told me that they have some joint trainings with chinese navy now. So I was surprised also. Lots of things going on that we are not always privy too. My take is probably real generic and trying to build better relationships with each other even with military. They did work together also in Africa against the pirates recently as well. GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

There was an Admiral Crowe (Powell's predecessor as Joint Chiefs) who blazed a trail for these international exercises around 1992. We did some with the Russians and had their ships visit Norfolk VA while I was stationed there and then our ships visited them in the Pacific. He established close ties. He also did a guest appearance on Cheers, playing himself! While I was at Annapolis, the admiral in charge of the academy was from Omaha and a huge Big Red fan. His deputy had married into the family of the Dr. who delivered me in Hastings.

Silicon small world and what a connection to Big Red, I love hearing these stories. Everyone has stories of interest to tell on the blog and its fun to hear some of them as well. So what's your prediction mine is NU 38 Misery 27 as both can score? GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

tanner ive seen that youtube video before with the missouri fans heckling that poor jayhawks fan. But it doesn't surprise me, Missouri fans have no class. Ranking the best fans in the big 12, nebraska is clearly #1 but clearly CU and MU fans are definitely at the bottom.

Wrestler - I'd like to wrestle with your girl friend, or is that you! OF COURSE we get NO MENTION on espn. We're nobody! Small state in the middle of nowhere! Smallest pop. in B12. Also no mention of game in USA Today, in the paper or online! Tomorrow, begrudgingly, there'll be a story. Refs, could rear their UGLY heads again!! Who can forget VT, FSU '94 NC - OB, '82 PEE St!!!

Average NU margin of victory on these predictions is 16.25. Are we really that confident, or is that just wishful thinking?
