Prediction thread: OU-NU
Posted by: Steve Sipple on November 6, 2009 at 10:05AM CST

Nebraska is yet to pull off a significant upset under Bo Pelini.

Beating No. 20 Oklahoma would be a surprise, for sure, considering Nebraska's recent struggles.

Beating a Sooner outfit that's one year removed from the national title game would obviously do wonders for Big Red's overall confidence.

Well, whadya think?

I had post my predictions on this game last week at 45-0, Husker win. That's my prediction & I'm stickin' to it. ;)

BAM
12-3 NU over OU in overtime
explanation forthcoming

Posted by: JoGale on November 6, 2009 10:07AM CST
sorry but with no offense and a confused offensive coordinator we can't win.

OU 24
NU 9

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on November 6, 2009 10:10AM CST
12-3 in overtime:

3-3 at the end of regulation.
NU gets the ball first in overtime.
Huskers get 1st and goal on the 3, but penalties push them back to 3rd and goal from the 36. CG finds Mike McNeill down the seam for the TD and 10-3 lead.
OU gets the ball and Suh chases Landry down 70 yards behind the line of scrimmage, where he gets flagged for intentional grounding in his own endzone (he runs straight back away from Suh, not outside the tackle box). Safety. Game over. 12-3 Huskers.

Snow, you snaked my bam. I may never forgive you.

Posted by: drivebyposter on November 6, 2009 10:13AM CST
I am sticking with corn 24 wagondrivers 17.

If the "Wild CornCat" offense is used it could be a much bigger spread.

Posted by: Stone on November 6, 2009 10:18AM CST
I cannot go against the white elephant in the room (no offense against non-Sun Belt teams)

NU - 10
OU - 34

I truly hope I am wrong and Watson comes out with a game plan this week.

Posted by: Miller on November 6, 2009 10:18AM CST
Well i don't like to post my predictions, I can only hope NU is the winner at the end of each game. As you all know I can barely watch a full Husker game without making myself sick. So today I am going out on a limb and posting my prediction, this is scarry for me but here goes. If Cody Green starts the game I am going to say:

NU 13
OU 9

I think the Offense is feeling the pressure and they are wanting to shut the media and fans up with the negative talk (I can only hope) and they have something to prove (fact). I think the NU offense comes out and plays an awesome game (please lord I am on my knees now) and the defense comes up huge also. NU plays this game like its a NC game, lights out (more praying on my knees to the big guy in the sky).

Posted by: Bloozman on November 6, 2009 10:18AM CST
We have NO offense!

OU-34
NU-Zip

Posted by: Ehusker on November 6, 2009 10:19AM CST
With Wats predictable play-calling and Cotton inept offensive line, we will loose this game regardless of QB. Defense will make it a relatively low scoring game.

NU 6 - OU 28

Posted by: Snow Bunny on November 6, 2009 10:20AM CST
Exiled, yep I'm the "bam" winner!

Every Husker game, I always predict the Huskers will win. However, I had felt a little uneasy about this when we played Virginia Tech & TX Tech. For some reason, I'm feeling really good about tomorrow's game. I just have this feeling that things are going to go our way. I sure hope this feeling I have is some women's intuition. Not sure I believe in this sort of thing but if we do win, maybe there is some truth to this. Guess we'll see soon. :)

Posted by: husker4ever on November 6, 2009 10:21AM CST
I can't predict this game. My husker blood hopes NU wins but my locigal brain tells me its a long shot given the recent offensive inconsistency. So I hope we win but i believe we don't have the fire power to win. Only chance is special teams or defensive scores to get a lead a d holds them

Posted by: joe9wicket on November 6, 2009 10:29AM CST
I stand by NU 28- OU 17.

OU fumbles the opening KO after Eric Martin pulls a Ruud awakening, picks up the ball he forced out for a TD. OU puts a drive together to tie. NU then runs back the ensuing KO. Trade punts til Halftime. NU drives the field on 1st possession to go up 21-7, then OU kicks a field goal. NU punts but OU fumbles again, and Helu has a 45 yard run on a stretch play. Both teams stall again, and OU finally scores w/ 2 minutes left, fail the onsides, and Green runs out the clock running the ball, gaining first downs and staying in bounds.

Question though, is it time for the crowd to rush the field?

Posted by: AMHUSKER on November 6, 2009 10:33AM CST
I'm going with 24-13 for NU. Landry gets hurt in the middle of 2nd qtr. and OU plays qb #3

Posted by: HuskerInExile on November 6, 2009 10:33AM CST
I'm with OU Vince. "It'll be a real defensive battle. OU 28-27."

Posted by: TheNUorder on November 6, 2009 10:35AM CST
NU 24
OU 23

Blackshirts get 3 turnovers, block 1 of two field goals and extra point.

Sooners score on long pass after broken coverage with 57 seconds left. PAT is blocked so Sooners go up 23 - 21. Huskers get ball on their own 20. AFter 2 plays it's 3rd and 3. Green breaks a long run off left tackle and gets the ball to OU 39 yard line.

Green spikes ball and clock stops with 4 seconds left. Field goal team comes on but no Henery. It's a new kicker. Looks like Mo Ney is now wearing number 90. The snap and hold are good and MO Hammers the ball thru the uprights. Kick would have been good from 70 yards. This Mo ney kid has got a leg. Sign him up Bo.

Posted by: black&bluehusker on November 6, 2009 10:36AM CST
If the score is indeed 45-0, it will be OU with the 45. If CG starts and has healthy running backs in the backfield it will be a close game, if not OU runs away with it

Posted by: TheOneAndOnly on November 6, 2009 10:38AM CST
35-14 Hillbillies.

Posted by: TommyOC on November 6, 2009 10:40AM CST
NU DLine - OU Oine = NU
OU DLine - NU OLine = OU

NU LB and DB - OU LB and DB = slightly OU

NU Offense - OU Offense = OU

NU Special teams - OU Special teams = NU

Outcome = Close game It could come down to field goals, and if it does, we win. Or if could come down to kick off or punt returns, or it could come down to who takes care of the ball better.

This game should be a close hard fought batter with these two, no matter. We match up with them well enough to win it. Our defense will keep us in it and so will theirs.

Who ever wins the batter on the OL should win this game. No matter what, it will take a great game for either team to get the victory. Sounds like we want to try and grind it out against them.

Posted by: Snow Bunny on November 6, 2009 10:40AM CST
joe9wicket, personally I hope our fans don't rush the field if we win. After all, we're Nebraska & we expect to win ALL games. The only rushing of the field I want to see is when we win National Championships.

Posted by: Snow Bunny on November 6, 2009 10:43AM CST
Well, my BF is getting his panties in a bunch because I'm still on the computer & not in the shower. He is getting anxious to get to Lincoln. Everyone have fun watching the game & I'm looking forward to meeting those that are attending the LITR tailgate.

Just for your info.. Vegas has OU at 4.5 to 6 pts favs and u/o at 42-42.5 pts.. interesting.. huh

Posted by: Ray in Bellevue on November 6, 2009 10:46AM CST
Oklahoma wins 40-17. Given our current offensive woes, I doubt whether we can score much against a top defense. And, unforturnately, we haven't shown much ability to defend against the deep pass which will allow the Sooners to score, in spite of the guys up front. The only hope is a lot of Sooner turnovers, and a coming out party for Green. Anything is possible in sports. That is why the game is played. Let's hope that everything needed to win falls in place, and the Sooners fall as well.

Posted by: Trashman on November 6, 2009 10:46AM CST
I'll have to ask Snow's BF about this panty wearing stuff at the LITR tailgate.

My first opinion is usually wrong, and my first opinion says we will get blown out of this game.

In the back of my mind I think it could be a special game win or lose. Might even be higher scoring than what we think...

Suh has 7 sacks and a pick. He says after the game, "Anything Crick can do, I can do better." The "No you can't"s "Yes I can"s ensue, Annie Get Your Gun-style.

Posted by: Trashman on November 6, 2009 10:54AM CST
I've kind of held offf on the predictions the last few because it seems we have no clue what's going at the QB position. I do think OU will be lucky to get past 20 pts unlike what a few posters are saying. I posted on a previous thread that my little bit of knowledge is that Zac Lee very well may start this game. Kinda strange. We'll need another defensive score to win this game if anyone saw how harassed the KU WRs and Reesing were against OU. What are our WRs gonna do?

It may take a fluke game to win, but we all witnessed ISU, right?

Maybe I'm a little cranky this AM, but I take a little exception to "Nebraska is yet to pull off a significant upset under Bo Pelini."

By my math, Bo has been the coach for 22 games now, but this will only be the 5th time we've faced a higher ranked opponent. And while two of those opponents took it to us, we played the other two to an OT loss, and a last second loss.

Even if we win tomorrow, it's still not going to be the "signature win" we hear so much about, as this is not the same OU as last year.

Here's a depressing question of the day:

Callahan never got a signature win; however, he had several contenders for signature loss. Which gets the prize?

Posted by: Jackson1 on November 6, 2009 11:15AM CST
Three and out just won't work against OU. The offensive scheme of running Cody Green & Roy Helu mixed in with dink & dunks will yield very little against OU's Defense.
Factor our Offensive woes with an Oklahoma Offense that miraclously has the most SEASONED QB that NU's Defense has faced in weeks and we're not nearly as likely to get off the field as successfully as we have against the NEW QB's TT, Ia State & Baylor provided.
I don't see where NU stands a chance in this one. Assuming we don't ICE THE BALL (aka Bill Callahan USC):

OU - 42

To your question, I'd toss out:

I got it.. thought it was after the two bad seasons 67 and 68.. 1969 was OC

Posted by: TomOs on November 6, 2009 11:35AM CST
Coaching career
In 1964, Osborne joined the Cornhusker coaching staff as an unpaid offensive assistant to head coach Bob Devaney; his only compensation was being able to dine at the athletic training table. After two disappointing 6–4 seasons in 1967 and 1968, Devaney named Osborne as offensive coordinator for the 1969 season. Osborne immediately overhauled the offense, switching to a balanced attack operated from the I formation. The revamped offense sparked the Huskers to the national title in 1970. The Huskers defeated LSU 17-12 in the 1971 Orange Bowl and finished first in the post-bowl AP poll, but third in the final UPI coaches' poll. (Through the 1973 season, the final UPI coaches poll was released before the bowls, making it a "regular season" title.) UPI awarded its title to Texas, which lost to Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl (#2 Ohio State also lost, to Stanford in the Rose Bowl). Nebraska was 13-0 in 1971 and a consensus national champion, defeating the next three teams in the final AP poll: Oklahoma, Colorado, and Alabama.

For those who are wondering about the starting QB, I would recommend that you take a look at who represented the offense at the weekly press conference. There was only one QB there and it wasn't by mistake (as Brian C. eluded to earlier this week).

Born and bread Husker fan here. Been through the good and bad times. Even in the good times it was tough to beat OU. That said I am picking OU by at least 10.

I just don't see us having enough offense to compete. I am not saying Sooner O is devastating I am saying ours is inept.

Last week proved we needed tons of help to score. Two weeks ago we needed tons of help to score.

If the Huskers get to 24 they have a pretty good chance to win. But I think getting 10 will be hard.

OU 21-good guys 9. TT proved they could move the ball on us even though they needed help. So a total shut down of OU isnt going to happen.

One down side that has not been discussed is Punting. alex is a GREAT short range punter and consistently pins folks deep. Less than spectular however on the long range stuff. If the O can move the ball against a much better D than we have seen this year (ya Better than VT), we might be able to keep the field Position in our favor. Still think it must come from the D and special teams. But it can be done. No score from me though.

We've allowed some big pass plays, sure. But the secondary has to rank behind the play of:
QBs
RBs
WRs
O Line
Special Teams

Well...Huskernation and the rest of the country are going to see how a 'Quality' OC prepares a "Young" offense.
As great as Crick, Suh and Pelini's genius can be, unfortunately they will struggle to keep OU under 50 points.
Any scoring consistancy will have to come from the NU defense, and believe me they will have plenty of opprotunities to score due to the fact NU's inept offense will be on the bench most of the game with loads of confused talent.
I would love to have higher hopes but facts are facts, i expect more of the same and pray for more Stoops compassion.

Reasoning:

I'm getting a positive vibe from channeling Bob Devaney, also I had to go to Seattle for a meeting and I'm going to meet for the first time and watch the game with the enforcer: RLUBIN, himself. So I see weird things happening in the Husker's favor for a change.

Prediction: Suh barrels at full speed towards the OU pocket, swerves to miss crick on the ground who was chopblocked, and runs straight into the pocket, taking out the center, OT and finally the QB in one of those classic compact car vs. freight train moments. 3rd string QB comes in, looks across the line into Suh's eyes and has a submission "wetting." OU forfeits from embarrassment.

or NU 20, OU 17

For all the reasons stated above - no reason to repeat what's been said by others:

OU - 28
NU - 6

Posted by: Redhead on November 6, 2009 2:37PM CST
The way I see it, the crowd is going to help determine the winner. The home crowd needs to be absolutley crazy loud to deafen the offensive calls of OU. We need to scream even louder when the SUH-Crick duo takes care of the OU offense. And then we need to completely lose our voices when our offense has ANY POSITIVE PLAYS. It will come down to the kicking team-possibly a repeat of the Colorado game last year. No true Husker fan should leave that stadium with any voice left at all.
We can't play the game for them, but we can certainly be the cutting and final edge for them.

Posted by: Blackshirtsdef on November 6, 2009 2:39PM CST
The performance will determine the outcome of the game...
if...NU plays like they can, minimizes penalties, turn overs and mistakes (drops, miss reads) Huskers Win!!

if...NU plays like they have been, penalties, turn overs and a rash of mistakes Huskers Lose!

plain and simple...They can win, but who's show'in up to play is what matters.

Jones + pressure in the pocket (OU's O line rivals ours) + DB's fingers can catch = turnover's baby!

GBSUH!!!!

Black shirt. No fair posting common sense. You are 100 % right but it is still no fair. In both posts. for us to have a chance, even if the O plays well, the D has to control their side of the ball and create some TOs or long yardage situations at the least. Hurting Jones would not hurt either, but Idon't really want to see that. Or at least not badly. (it is OK if they just put him out of this game)

Seriously though...if our "D" can control the game we've got a chance...if the Special teams can play grade "A" football, that gives us our best shot...if the "O" can at least produce, we're in it....If all these come together, NU smokes OU!

GBR!!

Well time to call it a day. It will be fun to meet some of ya tomorrow at the tailgate.

Like i said along with redhead we got to make OU's ears bleed no matter what. even if it gets a little rough. We can win this game if the players man up on offence like they did at VT and make no mistakes.

One other note don't know if or how many of ya caught Sports Nightly last nigh during the 7:00 hour, but coach Papuchis was on and guess what Bo called and gave him the buiz it was pretty funny. So don't think they don't know what's going on. GBR!!!!!!!!!

My same thoughts as you. My boys both play sports & were on some crapy teams but every time they took the field I always thought they would win. GBR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: BrianSm on November 6, 2009 3:31PM CST
OU's defense if not as good as we thought. K-State gave them fits. But almost any defense will look good against our offense. The defense will have to come up huge. OU has good skill players and the WR corps are better than most think.

How far can Cody Green come in one week? Will Helu return to form? Lots of maybes here.

OU 24

NU 10

with the defense getting the TD and Watson still scratching his head.

Posted by: BenAr2 on November 6, 2009 3:34PM CST
OU 27
NU 13 (with defensive or special teams touchdown)

Have seen nothing that would give me any faith that our OC can put together a plan that would enable us to move the ball against OU, or that we even know which of our players have big-play ability. Why is Mendoza not playing more in place of a hurt Helu? Why has Kyler Reed not been playing more? And, is he healthy for this week? If Helu isn't 100% and playing most of the downs, the score will be even worse. Unfortunately, more of the same from us on national television.

Well the good news is the Huskers should be able to play loose....I see about 30% of the posters actually giving them a chance.....so they might as well go out and have fun playing football. My guess is they have a 50/50 chance of winning...

OU-17

Or O starts slow then wakes up and takes out some frustrations.

D does what it does...17 is being generous to the Sooners.

You guys that watched the Cody Green interview on huskers.com should also watch the clip title get to know your Huskers: Cody Green...Dude really impresses me for a freshman.

-Suh and Crick set the standard for the game early on by making OU go 3 and out on first drive.

- Cody Green comes in and Leads the Huskers on a long TD scoring drive of 12+ plays.

- OU gets ball back and Huskers get a turnover on their side of the field.

- Cody Green comes in and leads the Huskers on another drive to score a TD.

- OU gets ball, and this time drives down the field but Fisher gets a sack that knocks them out of field goal range and causes 4th and long. They punt and Husker return the ball to the 50.

- DONU scores and takes the lead into half:

Half:
DONU: 21
OU: 0

-Second half starts and the Huskers return the kickoff for the TD.

- Game goes back and forth for a while. Then OU scores on its last two drives b4 the fourth quarter. A TD then a field goal.

- In the fourth quarter Suh gets two Saftey's due to Alex Henry's amazing punting ability, and Alex also adds a field goal.

Final:

DONU: 35
OU: 10

PT. If you like optimism you will love this story I heard on the radio tonight. I am not sure exactly when it was recorded but, it involved Jim Rome and Bo on Romes show. I believe it was in early 2008. Anyway, the discussion was that Rome was told that when NU and OU play in 2009, both teams would be in the top 10 and Rome wanted to know if he should purchase a ticket to see that game! Bo told him to book it! I wonder if he did?

20-16 OU

Our D is good for 7 pts and the offence good for 3 FG and out D will hold them to 13 or 6 pts but there will be 1 or 2 OU Defence scores so 20-16 in the logical score

Hopefull score 17-10 D Score 1 td and O gets 13 pts. the offence gives OU 7 pts. like i said hopefull

I won't be so bold to predict a score this week. But, if I was a betting man, I'd take the under 42.

See you all at the tailgate.

Posted by: Uncle Fester on November 7, 2009 3:26AM CST
There will be blood on the floor, all over the floor and scarlet in color.

I sure hope the offense rubs my face in it over and over again, but I think the defense, as in the ISU game, will save the offense but not enough to get a victory.

If NU wins, it will be because of injuries, turnovers, penalties, or other indeterminable variables. Take them out of the equation and NU gets a new face compliments of OU.

Been out of town for a while, but I had to get back in time for this one. I Would've quit my job, otherwise.

looks to be a close, hard fought game IF huskers do not committ turnovers. Our D will keep us in the game, but I highly doubt we score more then 14-17 against their defense. Our offense has not shown any reason whatsoever to make me believe they can score against OU - it will take, by far, the best game the offense has had all year to outscore the Sooners - and as such, I dont believe we are ready for that yet (especially considering the O line play this year, which to me, is the single biggest issue we have) - OU 20 - NU 10

Posted by: no nothing on November 7, 2009 6:05AM CST
I need to get a new radio for the game tonight. Do they even make small "transistor radios" any more. I do not need anything fancy, just an AM/FM with a decent headset. Any thoughts out there where one could get one. I have some time this AM before I go out on a breakfast date with two hot chicks.

I looked at some of the comments above again. You know, when some choose to not fall hook line and sinker over the second hand stories we are being told, that doesn't mean a fan/blogger/poster is a "pessimist, grumpy, or "P@#%$ed". These guys that are brought in here to generate money for the program must be held accountable for what they do and what they are supposed to do. Everyone has a different opinion of what the problems are with Nebraska football these days. You all know mine. They have not changed much since last year season ended.

I personally believe that the game has changed and in today's world it is all about the money. I don't mind the losing as much as the excuses that go along with it. At what point in time does this become the current staffs problem and not Callahan's. Here is another way of looking at it. Even Bill knew there were problems with the defense and look at the players he recruited that are stars right now. If anyone wants to believe that the current success of that line has to do with this new staff, I think you are kidding yourselves. However, let's say they are responsible for the defensive turn around, who is responsible for the offensive problems they now face?

All we hear is that the program is heading in a new direction. There is going to be a game in about twelve hours and I will be in the stands. What am I going to see? I don't really know and I guess that is why the game is going to be played. If I see the same things I have seen so far out of this staff, it could get interesting, real quick.

Anyway, the good fan in me says stay positive tonight and never give up. There are going to be some major challenges to overcome this evening (always is)and while the coach may be on the sidelines running around with his arms in the air in the "Y" formation, the players need to focus on their assignments and executing the play no matter how poor the play is for that given situation. Maybe OU will have a day like NU did with ISU. Remember, ISU created many of those turnovers! (All but one I believe)
Good luck Huskers.

Nebraska's defense turns in a good performance and OU won't run up and down the field on the Huskers. But it's not enough for an offense that continues to struggle mightily in this game. Oklahoma 21, Nebraska 3. Having said that, the X factor is Roy Helu Jr. If he went without the green jersey in practice this week, maybe, just maybe he's healthy. If so, NU 21, OU 17.

OH....OH....OH MY....OH MY G...... No that is NOT the sounds you heard coming from your roommates bedroom last night, rather Landry Jones as he scrambles to escape the oncoming rush of Suh, Crick and Co. D brings the heat and NU wins a close one. Huskerts 20....Sooners 17

Posted by: RocketHusker on November 7, 2009 9:46AM CST
If the defense holds OU to less than 20 pts. NU wins a close one. If OU scores more than 20 pts. OU blows us out something like 45-17.
