Prediction thread: NU-UT
Posted by: Steve Sipple on December 4, 2009 at 9:10AM CST

(Big Red) Breakfast has been served.

Carl Pelini says Nebraska isn't putting Texas on a pedestal.

Are you?

I think the Big 12 title game stays close into the fourth quarter before Texas picks up a couple late scores and wins 27-14.

Bring it!

Does Oregon sell Bud at their games, I saw a couple of large signs in the stadium last nite?

In favor of kool-aid over starbucks: huskers go in with chip on their shoulder, play with nothing to lose. Upset texas with a last-ditch defensive stand 26-23.

I said it last friday and I'll stick to it

NU 31 UT 16

1 special teams TD, Defense will score or set up 2 short TD'S. Offense scores 10 points and less than 250 yards. Defense holds UT to 300 to 350 yards and 1 TD and 3 FG's.

GBR!

Dream scenario:
Longhorns score last second touchdown to cut Husker margin of victory down to 28-20. Bo screams at Carl on the sidelines.

If I had to bet lots of money scenario:

31-24 NU. Burkhead will bring back memories (to us old guys) of Jeff Kinney's day in the Game of the Century when he was not to be denied. Gutsiest game by a Husker IB in NU history. Lee and Green in the Wildcat with Lee throwing shovel passes to Green for huge gains. Zone read with WR reverse to Brandon Kinnie. Passes to the tight ends on short routes across the middle sets up a long TD pass to Niles Paul. Henery has 3 punts downed inside the 5, along with a 47 yd field goal. The Blackshirts take it to McCoy and Big Suh's performance wins him the Walter Camp award and at least a trip to New York for the Heisman ceremony. Gomes and Haag contain Shipley all night. Midnight dancing on O and Dodge streets. Nebraska Furniture Mart declares bankrupcy for all the big screen tv's that were purchased with the agreement that they are free if the Huskers win the Conference Championship. Did I miss anything?

I was just down in San Antonio earlier this week (wearing my red Husker jacket, of course!), and those darn Texans are simply overconfident.

I see the Huskers hooking the Whorns on Saturday.

Posted by: Trashman on December 4, 2009 9:43AM CST
The 4 year starting QB makes all the difference in this game. He's relaxed, poised and there's very little we can throw at him that's gonna faze him. Folks, he's completing nearly 72% of his passes and Suh will be doubled with even better athletes than he's seen all year. Pressure and containment will be tough with his ability to move.

I think that last second lost to Tex Tech will be a strong reminder for Mack to use against his players. I would bet you it's been beat into their heads at will.

Just because the TX fans are overlooking this game (as we did with CU and rightfully so) doesn't mean the players are. Mack will have them well prepared

Sipp's was right on with where I was going.

For me: TX 27 NU 16

NU will still represent well, we're just not at this level yet.

Posted by: ScottF on December 4, 2009 9:45AM CST
Hope the Huskers can pull off the upset, but will have to hold Texas to 21 or less to do it. Not enough offense to stay with the Horns...

UT - 30
NU - 13

Posted by: Ehusker on December 4, 2009 9:47AM CST
NU offense will struggle against a very good Texas defense. Bo Pelini will rely on his defense to create turnovers but it will not be enough to stop Texas offense from scoring. We have to put points and outscore them, which I believe it will be hard to do. Not with the offense that we currently have.

We stick with the run game, go plus 3 in turnovers, House of Spears introduces himself to Colt repeatedly and our defense and special teams will set us up with a short field 4 times. They will all come together for their 1st complete football game giving us our 1st of many Bo lead conference championships.

Posted by: salmon_slayer63 on December 4, 2009 10:12AM CST
I live in Oregon. If any of you all watched the game last night u saw a valiant effort put on by OSU. Even with 2 or 3 TO's by the Ducks. OSU couldn't win the game without making TD's.

Tomorrows game will play out much the same unless we score 35 points. TD's and not FG's are necessary to win the game. IF the Huskers are getting FG's and not TD's Huskers might stay close but lose in the end.

I also havent seen the pressure on the QB's late in the year that we saw early. Colt is a pretty mobile QB so it makes it harder to sack him. Bo and Carl will need to draw up some unusual blitz packages and take chance to help get UT off the field.

Most importantly NU on O will need to make 1st downs. Going for it on 4th down and making it going to have to be the gameplan. Alex punting 10-13 times is not going to be a recipe for winning. I think Alex has been great and the field position has been adventageous lately but scoring and putting pressue on UT are the winning ways.

Let us say an argument can be made that the best player in college football will be on the field for Saturday's Big 12 title clash. And an argument can be made that his name ISN'T Colt McCoy. Ndamukong Suh is his name. He has achieved greatness at a higher level. Named: All American Team, Big Twelve Defensive Player Of The Year. And many more awards soon to come. Along with the NFL first round draft pick and millions of $ soon. Regular season stats for Suh: 70 tackles, 16 for losses, 7.5 sacks, 22 qb hurries, 10 pass break-ups and an interception that turned the game against Missouri.
He will go down as one of the best in Husker history and that is saying something. I along with many others will miss this tenacious competitor with a motor that never quits. He exemplifies every aspect of college football from hard work to his humble kindness.
As Husker fans we can only hope that he has opened the door to other God gifted talent to come to NU. He did nothing to hurt us that is for sure. We have seen what one man can do to create better people out of others. That is leadership at it's core. He put that team upon his shoulders and carried us to this point. So as Suh has put it: It's us against the world " Get ready to see some action. We have a weather update for conditions inside the DOME;;;;;;; Get ready, there is a SUH-NAMI on it's way............. GO BIG RED.

DONU will need to score 32 and Texas something less than that.
I've got to believe there will be some offensive plays we haven't seen yet but have been worked on all year.
If all cylinders click and we win the turnover margin....35 - 31 NU GO BIG RED!!!

Salmon_slayer63:
To your point about the OU, OSU game last night . . . The biggest difference with that out-matched OSU team and NU, is that OSU has an AWEFUL defense! In fact, both of those teams last night leave much to desire on the defensive side of the ball. They gameplan to outscore teams.

I'm not saying that touchdowns are not important, I would love to see us convert at a higher endzone percentage inside the red-zone. However, our gameplan is completely different, centering around ball-control, time of possession, and our "bend-don't-break" defensive mentality. We will never win a "shoot-out" with Texas, like Oregon did with OSU last night, and we can't really count on simply outscoring any team on our schedule.

We are outmatched, talent-wise, as OSU was last night, but a great defensive scheme, great coaching, physical play, and a little bit of luck (hopefully some trick plays) on offense could bring us out of Dallas with a close win.

Good morning,

Picking Nebraska to win will lead to heartache and pain.

Enjoy what you have.

Posted by: PT Husker on December 4, 2009 11:10AM CST
McCoy is at his best when he scrambles. Many have flushed him and that is when he hurts you. His recievers are also great at adjusting routes when he is on the run. EVERYBODY has to stay disiplinced for the entire play. On offense we must be opportunistic and take advantage of of and short feild that we get.

Souns easy huh. Not sure if we are up to it for 60 minutes which it will take to win the game.

Texas 24 NU 17.

I predict every time Lee runs the Option something bad will happen and that if we throw any bubble screens we'll lose yards or get picked.

on the better side of the ball I predict Suh will harass/sack/hit McCoy to the point that Colt will temporarily lose his iffy texan accent.

Several weeks ago, I was listening to Sports Nightly. Right after the Iowa State debacle, a caller said Nebraska would have a losing season. The host of the show said he would give up his seat on the show to let this blowhard have it for one night if Nebraska ended up with a losing record. Thank God I would have the right to shut off the radio if that thing happened, just as I have the right not to read what therapist off says.

Nebraska "hard hittin' last men standing" - 23
Texas "steers and hiefers, its whats for dinner" - 17

Some other predictions -

Number of times Suh and Crick are held -
Same as the number of offensive plays by Tx.

Pass break-ups by Gomes -
However many times they throw to Shippley, maybe minus one or two, which he will strip.

Number of Bruises by Larry the Assasin -
Dozens

Number of Personal Fouls by Larry the Assasin -
.........hey, he plays hard and fast

Yards by Rex "the hammer" -
100+, 90 after first contact.

Yards by Roy "the bullet" -
80+ ground, 50+ recieving (we haven't seen that in a while so I'm thinkin......)

Great reads by The General -
10

Bad reads by the General -
Ok, maybe a couple, but hey, he's a first year starter.

Nasty Attitude Inflicted by the O-Linemen -
How many guys are we rotating, again? cause I'm thinkin they all got a chip by now

Time elapsed in game before Colt McCoy hits the ground -
depends on who kicks off first.

Quarter in which Colt starts to look a little beat up -
3rd

Smiles from Bo during the game -
0

After the game -
1

And then the usual things

Bo yells at refs - can't count that high

Bo yells at Carl - every play on defense

Henery punts inside the 20 - every other one.

Kunalic touchbacks - all of them

The General hits Niles Paul for a big gainer - at least once.

Big plays by freshmen players - many

Pass breakups by the Defensive front - 5

Int's by O'hanlon - 1

Years Watson coaches at NU -
As many as he wants in my personal opinion. Don't care what you say, the guy is a good fit for us and given some good direction will produce in the future. Hey, he's shown he can learn some new tricks, so lets support him and see where that takes us.

Some other stuff will happen, too, but mostly it's just bad for Texas.

I like reading the kool-aid picks; gets me going!

I guess my question is: would people have expected us to beat OU with Bradford playing? I would say not a chance. He's the injured, but current Heisman trophy winner we fortunately did not have to face. We are now playing the frontrunner for the 2009 Heisman winner with every bit as much talent (probably more) than OU.

Unfortunately, a star QB > a star DL. We have a small chance of a injury to Colt or excessive turnovers, but that's awfully hard to hang a prediction on.

I know that NU's plan is to run the ball on offense, but in order to make that happen Lee has to be able to pass the ball with greater success than he has. So the problem is will Watson be able to get him into a rhythm early? For any QB, isn't this important to be confident?

If Watson does get Lee in the grove, does he get lazy and stubborn and rely on the pass?
So, how long will Bo let Watson run the rhythm thing?

Good questions. I can't see Zac really getting into a rhythm where NU is passing a lot in a drive. If we're forced that way, probably in a lot of trouble. Watson has learned his lesson and won't go that route unless it's ugly IMO.

Lee has to make 8-10 sizeable pass plays, probably each one going for a minimum of 15 yards. He's going to have his chances, because the defense will go one-on-one all day until Lee proves they can't. Texas is going to do everything they can to force Lee and not our OL or RBs to beat them. Gonna be fun!

Posted by: BrianFi on December 4, 2009 11:50AM CST
LoLo I like that game plan..... better than your previous. I can see it now Suh running from the left and Crick from the right, on a bee line to destruction and the timing is perfect, out goes the ball and up comes the guts of McCoy. Pick up the pieces and restart the game clock. Fresh meat at QB for the Husker Defense to devour. Might even out the odds:)......

Heck, trashman, reality is for work and raising kids and the rest of life, this is a Nebraska Fan Blog.

I'll never put up anything except the best possible outcome. These kids deserve props from us for playing thier hardest despite lots of turmoil during thier time at NU. Hell, it's simpler than that, they deserve our respect and admiration for coming to Nebraska and playing for the RED. Don't care what the nonbelievers say, they do not have it easy.

I don't think the offense is ready or can get anything going. Defense will play a great game and keep Texas to a low scoring game. Now if the offense has been holding back some plays that they haven't been showing all year, then we could come out on top of this and win it!!!

Big Wave Dave - congrats on your fourth grandchild. I have three with one more on the way next June. If I would have known how much fun grandkids were going to be, I would have had them first.

Now Texas is a outstanding team no doubt. they are used to playing in Championships. They have a National Championship game on the line. They are the favorites and deservedly so. But in 56 years of being a Husker fan, I have never went against the Huskers, not going to start now. Huskers 21-Texas 15.

My nephew and friends are going to be at the game-5th row, on the 35 yard line immediately
behind the Husker bench. I told him to make a sign with SUH on it and he will be on TV for sure. I also told him that if he comes home with ANY voice left, he will have to answer to me. We were all at the NU-OU game and none of us had voices left. The BIG RED FAITHFUL(those lucky enough to be going to the game) will need to re-create the atmosphere from the NU-OU game, as much as possible. It will be the edge that BIG RED needs to cut up some steers and grill them on a RED hot fire.

Hey Charger, how's it going?

Or should I call you Jason Peter!?!?! Just kiddin with ya cuz that's what he would say time and again on "The Spread" with the attitude and trying harder thing. It does work in a lot of instances.

I guess I just feel that TX wants it every bit as bad as we do, almost trying to "fix" what happened to them last year with the loss in Lubbock. Add that to the talent level and it's a tough sled....but I'll be on here for you to tell me "told ya so" if and or when it happens! (Trust me, I hope it's the case).

After reading some of the comments posted here, I've changed my mind. We don't have a chance.

Texas' offense is unstoppable. McCoy never gets rattled and ALWAYS hits the open receiver. Their defense is better than any we've ever seen. Our offense is terrible. We'll be lucky to get a first down. AND, of course, the better team ALWAYS WINS.

Is it too late to forfeit the K-State game and let them play Texas? Oh, woe is us.

I'm just looking at this way because the majority of fans beleive that we have a lack of talent on this team, and i strongly dissagree with that. Tx has only really played one tuff team in OU. IMO. I believe in what Joe Ganz has said over the course of this year and really these kids can play the game. Youth & inexperiance have been the biggest problem and towards the end of the season they are starting to get it.

Hell I'm just a fan.

Nebraska has just a good of chance to win this game as Texas does. Anything can happen in a football game. We heard all this no chance to win stuff when we played Michigan in the 2005 Alamo bowl.

You know.. realistically.. we stand little chance of winning, according to stats and pundits... their O is superior to ours, no doubt, their D is good .. well I would take ours.. theirs has not had much pressure, their running stats are slanted because most teams were behind and went to the pass.. the one little gleam that I see is the OU game.. Sam played what, 1 1/2 quarters is all, I think.. they beat them by 1.. they arent all that.. sure we will need to be a little lucky with the bounce.. who gave us much of a chance against OU.. who gave Ia St much of chance against us... all I know is Big Red will play with alot of heart and desire and with that anything can happen.. So what you are saying, Country Husker, is 23 - 17 NU?
NU will score a touchdown if the defense or special teams is able to. Otherwise NU might have a few chances for some field goals. The offense is just not there. 38 - 8 Texass.

Good post. Although I would say that a lot of people including myself thought we would beat OU being here and against a backup. Probably 50-50 chance for most. However, versus ISU I gave them about a 1% chance of victory. We've got at least 10 times that (no matter what Todd Mcshay says!).

Most of the snow has moved out of Austin but it is still too cold for the tea sippers. The roof will be closed at jerrys world and the doors will be open in the end zones (the wind wips through there more than you might think). Game time temp in the low 40's and falling. These people don't like the cold and yes that is cold to us ( I know my blood has thinned out in my 25 yrs here) NU-23, UT-20. Nebraska and under. GBR

Its gonna sound something like this.

Reporter: Well coach thisis the 2nd year in a row your National title hopes have been dashed.

Brown:
We are only a 1 loss team. Take nothing away from Nebraska. they played inspired. But we still deserve a shot at the title game. No disrespect to TCU but we play a much tougher schedule. And we are TEXAS. Who would you rather watch on TV? And all those holding calls we got, what were we do do? Let Suh Kill my QB? What were those Refs thinking. No disrespect to them mind you. But its not fair. We are Texas.

And on and on and on.

YOu get the point.

Posted by: rluben on December 4, 2009 1:38PM CST
What you think I'm going to give those goofballs respect and call them UT?

lol it's not like they've ever done anything with their 10 win seasons 'cept once because a once in a lifetime QB carried them on his back.

Pretenders about to get exposed.

Posted by: Country Husker on December 4, 2009 1:38PM CST
Lets see, in my 23 -17 prediction, I think we were gonna score 1 defensive td, pick-6, fumble recovery, something close for an easy score, etc. The second TD comes late in the 4th quarter to win the game after 3 Alex Henery field goals. I think that adds up to 23 (7+7+3+3+3).

Poor Texas is gonna get 1 TD per half and a late field goal that they think seals the deal at 17-16, until that Zac Lee to a wide open Niles Paul or Mike McNeil thing (after Rex and Roy have thumped on them for 55 minutes) scores our first offensive TD.

Thats what Bo and Tom and Wats and I have schemed up this week, anyway.

......all in fun.

Everyone is afraid of the Whorn offense, but the telling stat to me is this:

Texass has only played against ONE defense ranked in the TOP 30 in college football. That team was OU and they held the Whorns to 16, so I am at least somewhat optimistic that NU can play with the steers from Austin.

We are the greatest fans in College Football, and the most determined bunch of internet junkies, apparently. Go Big Red Bloggers!

For the "mandatory dose of reality" fans, of course he will not win the Heisman unless he sacks Colt 5 times, intercepts 2 passes and scores 3 touchdowns, but who cares. We won the poll, lets celebrate by beating Texas!

GO BIG RED!

Posted by: IBleedRed on December 4, 2009 1:50PM CST
Anything is possible, but Tx is just too tough this year to get our hopes up. We are outmatched at every position with the exception of Suh whom they can double and they are three deep on the bench. Tx would have to have a terrible game and Nebraska the best of the season AND catch a lot of breaks. My heart is with our boys but my head says Texas. Tx 28- N 10. IN bb N 72 -Creighton 60.

No team is too tough...are we outmatched in spots? Yes, they do have more "talent" in some spots, but do they have more "determination" at those spots. It is for this reason that the game is played and it doesn't always turn out the way it is "supposed" to! If they do beat us it will be because they outplayed us and there is no shame in that. My prediction...there will be a "war" in Arlington, Texas on Monday night. I do believe the Texas players will come away from this game wondering about the future and will have reservations about playing NU from this point on. This is a "respect" game for us and when a team is in that mode anything can happen.

1) Congratulations and best wishes, Big Wave Dave!

2) I, too, share in the profound concern about no-calls on the Horn O line as they hold on to our D line for dear life (and their QB). However, I also believe that our D will, under the fierce in-game tutelage of the brothers Pelini, get into the Horns' heads as no other D has this season. I think we get at least one pick 6 and another score from the D this game to rattle the Horns' cages. (Maybe "corrals" would be a better choice.) And

3) I think the offense plays a control game featuring stout, workmanlike performances by Burkhead and Helu. Added bonus: fullbacks carrying the ball. (Miracles still happen.) You will hear my screams of anguish on most called first down passes--if you can hear anything over your own.

A nail-biter, but if we play loose, we pull it out somewhere around 13-10, or 17-14. And marvel what a quality leader at the helm can pull off.

Posted by: PT Husker on December 4, 2009 2:33PM CST
Tex, Glad you caught that Monday thing casue I was gonna.

And all of the things we have been saying is the reason for Playing the game so I am with you there. Only game Tex palyed that I watched much of was aTm and the defense got exposed there a lot. But it was done by a mobile QB so I don't know if that is fair.

But I do think ours is better top to bottem than theirs so I would disagree somewhat with Inbread.

My concerns rest with our secondary, that is much better than last year, but maybe not good enough and If our offense can take advantage of the opportunities they get during the game.

Sticking with 19-17 NU cause I want them to win.

My therapy Dude predection would be more like 27-10 with the game closer than the score indicates.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on December 4, 2009 2:37PM CST
The key defensively won't be how many times we can sack McCoy, but rather how many hurries and knockdowns we can get on McCoy. Being able to collapse the pocket will have much more effect creating less precise passes which in turn could produce one of those pick 6's. My suspicions were that Mack would do everything in his power to showcase McCoy in an effort to win him the Heisman. Word is that's exactly what is going to happen. If that's the case their priorities are in the wrong place which can be very dangerous. I hope that's the case, if so it would be a major plus for our defense.

Country Husker, welcome to the dissertation subset of posters? Rluben, No Nothing and myself are defn. in this grouping that Busiekcreek, so aptly identified? Sometimes GBRTX or Coach falls into that subset as well?

Have you purchased some steeltoe boots for coming here to HK, and joining me for some stimulating rat hunting?

Ok, I feel it in the air? That air drifts along ways from Huskerville to here? Say around 10,000 miles or so? But while FU and I were doing our TM exercises before our daily workout last night, I had a vision and it was exciting?

Colt gets dinged somewhat by Suh and company in 1st qtr and has to leave the game similar to "Bradford" like? And UT's backup comes in for duration of the game? The backup throws 10 picks, OU's 5, times 2, and we win in a rout 38 to 3? Yes, on those 10 picks, 4 of them go to the house, so offense picks up another 10 on its merit of average? Go Big Defense and Suh for Heisman?

Hey it's my vision so no criticism please? You don't see this scenario happening, you say?
Ok, how about this one, 17 to 13 Husker upset as D plays lights out, and O does just enough to garner the win? Still like my vision best? GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

I'll be damed if I'm going to come on here and pick anything but the Huskers. Texas gets the ball and the Blackshirts get a turnover in our red zone and our O puts it in for a quick 7 point lead. The D rides that momentum and Suh and Dillard get into Colts head (Colt is thinking about the Heisman pose rather than playing a football game) and rough him up and get him completely out of rythum. The offense runs right at the Whorns and we physically take it to them.

There have been more than a few sports pundits who predict a Nebraska upset. Hmmm.

Going off-topic here . . .

Do you folks back in the ol' stomping ground know about The Irish Rogue in NYC? It's a typical bar-n'-grill in midtown Manhattan, but on NU football game days, it's a Husker bar. From the concrete jungle, you cross the threshold and instantly you're in Lincoln. The place is filled with Nordic-looking people wearing red. The Nebraska game is on dozens of screens. Sureal! I haven't been able to make it there in quite a while, but what a great way to spend Saturdays in autumn.

Oh, my prediction? I just don't think we can outscore the Horns, even it they only score once.
