Prediction thread: ISU-Nebraska
Posted by: Steve Sipple on October 23, 2009 at 10:36AM CST

Can Iowa State get its play-action game going?

Can Nebraska get anything going on offense?

(Sorry, couldn't resist).

Lee or Green?

NL or AL?

Isiah or Magic?

The Huskers will get enough going to win by a score of, oh I don't know, let's say somewhere in the neighborhood of . . . 28-10.

Bring it!

BAM!!!! 31-3 Big Red!!

Posted by: Ray in Bellevue on October 23, 2009 10:42AM CST
Lee will start, but be replaced by Green early-on if the offense stalls, which is likely to happen. And, Iowa State will provide us problems will the roll-out pass and QB runs, but not enough to win. Our overall defense will keep us in the game, unless we have a lot of turnovers. Your final score of 28-10 sounds about right.

48-13 Lee and Green each play a half. Receivers get open and we pass for 300 and run for 200.

If Green starts:

Zac and Cody split time and the Cyclone defense gets dizzy. The Blackshirts play smart and aggressive.

Huskers 38
Cyclone 13

Posted by: Denver Bob on October 23, 2009 10:58AM CST
Huskers 24-13.

Clones get 2 FGs and a "flukey" touchdown. Huskers go conservative and just move chains.

Huskers 35, Iowa State 21

Huskers put the ball in the endzone. Offense gets some confidence. Defense remains strong but gives up a late TD in slop time. Don't care who starts at QB, I trust the coaches will put the best player on the field.

Posted by: JCC on October 23, 2009 11:13AM CST
Offense still struggles but shows some progress. Play-calling still has question marks.
Defense has to shoulder the load.

5-3 Huskers. Can the offense come up with more than 3 points? Hopefully the defense can score a safety. Consider this a challenge to both the offense and defense.

Posted by: POWERHUSKERS on October 23, 2009 11:16AM CST
31-17 The coaches will continue to start Lee for the rest of the season but play Cody a lot more in every game to Come. Perhaps this is the best way to get Raise Cody in the big red as a frosh.

Nebraska by at least 1.

BAM

Posted by: FrontRangeHusker on October 23, 2009 11:21AM CST
My prediction is the offense looks just fine against the 'clones (led by..insert any of our qb's), since isu's defense is probably sun belt quality. I do not see their run game developing, Husker D line will have a field day. I do see Lee starting and handling the offense adequately masking his hesitancy (or fear to make a mistake), and thus prolonging the qb discussion/mystery for another week, or at least until we run into a quality defensive scheme. Not a lot of answers to come out of this one in my opinion. I do not know if C Green is a better option, as we have only seen him in select situations.
The real question needing an answer is Helu's shoulder, i remember after games last year, where he seemed to wince and reach for his shoulder, during post game interviews, after ku comes to mind....

57th ranked Offense & 12th ranked Defense equals a tough day for ISU in any weather. As the 4th quarter starts the clones will be heard repeating to each other..."i don't think we're in kansas anymore"

Posted by: Thor_4_huskers on October 23, 2009 11:59AM CST
In my opinion i say we start green! see if he can handle a weaker defense like ISU. if he dont, let lee play the next three quarters.

If lee plays i say it will be 24-10 Nebraska

If green plays and plays well i think it could be more like 41-10!

Posted by: huskers_40 on October 23, 2009 12:02PM CST
I'm going to have to say that Lee will start. Bo is still trusting in his starter but if things don't progress he will soon be replaced by Green.

24-13, with the offense still needing progress we won't put up big numbers. Iowa St will score and it will be early until the defense adjusts. After that NU defense will just dominate and overwhelm the Iowa St O.

Posted by: charger on October 23, 2009 12:03PM CST
I can't figure out why some folks think that the answer is Green.

Posted by: POWERHUSKERS on October 23, 2009 12:04PM CST
The best way to look at this season is a good opportunity for 2 quarterbacks to improve their game so that next year we have 2 very capable quarterbacks. Which is how I defend that we better have at least an 11 win season next year.

Posted by: MileHiHusker on October 23, 2009 12:04PM CST
I think if Green starts NU can potentially score about 17 more points than if Lee starts. However, Green will make some costly mistakes that gives ISU 10 points. But that is a net gain of 7 points if Green starts. Should win by 2 touchdowns anyway.

Posted by: Thor_4_huskers on October 23, 2009 12:05PM CST
Charger)))
because he gives us a better run game! and with helu banged up and no clear cut #2 he is the only hope of a run game.

Posted by: gtsum2 on October 23, 2009 12:11PM CST
I think the offense will continue to have some struggles consistantly going up and down the field. Husker D will keep the pressure on ISU. Close game for awhile, and Huskers come out on top 27-12

Posted by: TheNUorder on October 23, 2009 12:12PM CST
Lee starts. If he has a Sun Belt performance NU 49 IS 17.

If Lee can't get it going, Green will be in by 2nd qtr NU 38 IS 24.

I agree with you on the booing. We didn't earn the reputation as the best fans in college football for booing at our own players. People need to pull there heads and realize we are still in a developing phase. Next year will be the year to determine whether we are a top 5 team again.

Mr. Sipple mentioned in another article that people e-mailed him to let him know that they pay good money for their tickets and will boo if they want.....I say, give up your tickets then to people who would pay good money and not boo!

Posted by: Huskerzone on October 23, 2009 12:36PM CST
redrealist and huskers_40, GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT. THE CROWD WAS BOOING THE REFS, NOT THE PLAYERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Stillahuskerfan on October 23, 2009 12:40PM CST
I really don't see the D giving up more than 10. I say Lee starts, Green comes in the 2nd quarter and

NU = 35
ISU = 10

I hope Lee has a decent game, he needs and deserves one. Cody needs the time in a meaningful situation again to gain confidence. Should be fun to watch.

Huskerzone, read part of the article that Sipple wrote:

Thumbs down to the Nebraska fans who e-mailed me this week insisting that nobody in the home crowd was booing players in last week’s 31-10 loss to Texas Tech. Tell that to the fans who wrote me to say they pay good money to attend games and can boo players if they darned well please.

When Green gets in the game I hope he has some success. Otherwise we are going to be calling Kearney St. to see if we can borrow their guy.

From what I was told by friends at the game and read some articles it sounded more like booing for the huskers. I don't understand how you can boo the refs and then turn around and start chanting Cody Green for him to come in and replace Lee. Sorry it just doesn't make sense to me.

Good to know charger. I am old and bruise easily.

Posted by: RockHusker on October 23, 2009 1:08PM CST
I am hoping for the best. I was at the KU vs ISU game. I came away impressed with their offensive speed. I think they got away with pushing off on a couple of catches that were big for them. This game will be interesting. I think last week the players were reading too many stories about how they were back! Once we had the fumble we looked like a boxer who has his bell rung.

I am hoping for 31 - 17 or better this week. Confident we'll see both QB's. But more than that I would like to see a O Line that can move people and pick up a 3rd and 4. I don't care how young we are, run blocking is all about strength on strength.

OTB - Like the coaches who are never satisfied, I think it is ok for fans to have high expectations. But I just don't get fans who boo college players. They are young and doing the best they can. Just like my kids I am disappointed at times, but I never make them feel like they are bad kids.

I also know people believe the booing at the game was at refs, and most of it probably was. BUt there were boos aimed at Zac - How do they think that helps anything?

Nebraska real fans are not fairweather fans like I see here in Lawrence KS...... we support our team through the good and the bad.

This North Division is nuts. I have no idea who is good or bad anymore. I mean KU is giving up points like mad. Kstate scoring 62 points. What is up with that. Cu tried to melt down but held on against KU. that Brisco dude is crazy good for KU BTW.

the only thing I can figure out is right now none of us are as good as Texas Okie St. TT and OU. and Kinda in that order.

Posted by: Outside The Box on October 23, 2009 1:42PM CST
PT - the most shocking part of the KU-CU game was not how CU handled KU (or let them back in), it was that Briscoe dropped a clutch reception.

Posted by: RockHusker on October 23, 2009 1:43PM CST
Both Briscoe and Meier are good. Living here in wheathead land get to see them up close. They both great catches and compete for the ball well. Reesing gets to just throw it up and let them make the catch. I think he is a good QB but not great. Both of those recievers will play at the next level. I doubt Reesing does.

Posted by: PT Husker on October 23, 2009 1:54PM CST

As I've posted um'teenth times, its getting redundant! Have "DR." Watson sript 15 or so plays, that "Buffalo Bill" Cody & the team run to "PERFECTION", to begin the game! If he/team struggles, bring in "general" Lee or "president" Washington. Shannahan (ex Donkey coach) scripted a # of plays to start a game. I know our "esteemed" OC wants to take what the defense gives, but come on, this "O" ain't working! On another note, that Tech game turned on a couple of plays! The infamous "lateral" where nobody covered the live ball or gave chase (except 1), deflected pass caught by TT, deflected pass NOT caught by NU & the hideous pass interference call @ the goal line against NU! You can't tell me that some officials don't have AN AGENDA against NU!! That idiot (ref), pass interferenc call, was from TXASS! Calls over the years that have cost DONU NC's ie: FSU, Orange Bowl & PEEE St., '82!!! SCORE: DONU 28 - ISU 17

Charger You could be right. Maybe not for the reason you stated but you could be right. there have been flashes of what this team is capable of. Give us one decent drive with no penalties and the light just might come on. If it is Green that leads it then many on here get validation. If it is Lee then good for him.

But I could care less who does it. Just do it.

Posted by: NUCORNDEVIL on October 23, 2009 3:20PM CST
I hope to see some double back sets and single back w/Lee under center and little or no zone blocking. NU needs to focus on running the ball maybe 50% of the game. With substantial run blocking film, progress may be made in technique and execution, score is irrelevent, its the scoring process.
I clearly dont expect ISU to score.

There was some arguing earlier about whether or not players were being boo-ed.

Most of the booing was at the refs...but there absolutely was booing at the players.

It was entirely deserved... You have to score. You just had a lethargic 10 minute drive and wasted a ton of time. 4th down. And you throw the ball away?! Grow a GD pair Lee. You are the quarterback playing FOR the University of Nebraska...play to win or sit the f&$k down.

There is a time and a place for playing it safe...and there is a time to take chances and up to this point Lee hasn't shown the decision capability to distinguish the two. Hopefully Watson can coach him up.

As far as booing goes...I think it's important that the crowd shows some emotion in these regards. It shows they care. It shows that they can tell when its NU beating NU...and we most definitely beat ourselves playing TT.

I've been at games where we were clearly outmatched...in those cases the crowd understood that the players were giving their all but the talent level was to great to overcome. This game clearly wasn't that. It was mistakes NU made b/c of a lack of consistency and focus. The crowd could tell...and that's why they booed.

With all that being said those same people that booed are going to be back in Lincoln. Back in their same seat cheering the team on this Saturday. The support is and has always been there...

That was Perlman's decision to get rid of him, he just brought in that AD to do it. All because

NU 34 ISU 17 this and Baylor games should allow the offense to look better and regain some of its confidence I suspect? TomOs, interesting prediction on OU vs KU game? Busiekcreek, good luck to you against Auburn?
Attitude and intensity should be excellent for Huskers in game with ISU? So a bounce back game is in store for Huskers and fans, this will soothe only to a degree as all eyes are on pending game with OU on Nov 7th? Like the old Big Eight days, as both teams struggling now but still a game that matters to both for restoration to a season of dashed hopes somewhat? GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

DBP, you nailed it crazy year in the North for sure? Mildcats and the old coach you know he's not bad at resurrecting programs such as Mildcats, I for one questioned his returning, and maybe I am wrong in that questioning? Like him or not he has done wonders at "Little Apple". A & M's coach is probably gone at end of season? Coach Hawkins with switch to QB, can't help but wonder if he was prodded somewhat by AD and others to do so for a understanding of returning next year regardless of outcome for this season? But the switch has given some new life to the Puffs? KU's Reesing for his size and stature is a gamer no not a NFL guy but a very good QB at KU in my opinion? Line play of KU's is horrible yes worse than Sooners and NU so Reesing is doing his thing on the run and does it pretty well? Remember in sports if one has ever played don't have to like a team but should always show respect for athletes of accomplishment that is class! PT you have it right in my book also for South division UT is the best and only one can be a player now on national scene? Okie Lite with A game I think is a cut above TT, with their A game big if for up and down Okie Lite then TT close to Okie Lite and I would put Sooners in 4th this year in South also? GBR! Zhou Da Hong! I think now NU and OU game in Lincoln is a tossup with both solid defenses and struggling offenses!

I am confident we will win this game. Probably something like 27 to 13. We will have a better game on offense, but against ISU does that really matter? I wish Cody Green would start, but Lee will. Someone posted as to why we would want Green in there? Well, Lee's stats were better. That being said Green looked more composed in the pocket as a Freshman. It also looked like Green was trying to force some plays downfield because of the bad situation he was placed in. He was throwing some good intermediate passes though where he would LEAD the WR's instead of throwing it behind them. My MUv. NE prediction was off by 5, I picked TT to win- I thought it would be a close game though, so lets see how close I get on this one.

Evenin' Jerome...Lee gets 3 Td's in first half and fingers the crowd on the way out the tunnel!
...Other than that, I don't forsee anything else upsetting this crowd!

Most to the predictions here are giving too much credit to both offenses. Huskers 17-3.

What it is Newfie? Max, I believe that the offense is gonna answer the bell and come out swinging in this one. I haven't seen anything out of Iowa State that looks like a formidable defense.

Anybody else wanna see the D start throwing up the bones more often? I miss the days of Tomich, Peters, and the Brown boys. It always jacked me up when those guys would make a big play then get up and throw the bones.

Jerome, I hope you are right? I would love to see this game put away early. It will drive me absolutely nuts if ISU is still in the game late in 2nd half. However, from what I have seen the last two weeks, I think the O has lost some confidence. Regarding your comment about Tomich, Peters and the Brown boys I could add a few more names that I miss. What about Winstrom or Minter. Remember Dumas?

My prediction: Zac Lee has a coming out game and loosens up and has a great game. Zac's head has been so screwd up with Watson's continual "ball control..no turnovers" He's a great athlete and does things with his arm and his legs that we haven't seen yet. Cody comes in the middle of the third quarter for mop up.

GBR!!

This would be the perfect game to start Green....being that its Iowa and all...kind of a confidence boost to see what he's got.

But whatever...GBSuh!!

31-10 Huskers. Suh and Company shut them down and Green provides a spark to the offense with his feet at QB.

Go Big Red!!!
