Prediction thread: Arizona-Nebraska
Posted by: Steve Sipple on December 29, 2009 at 6:53PM CST

I knew we were missing something on this trip . . .

A prediction thread has finally arrived.

I'll go with Nebraska 17, Arizona 14.

A very physical and intense battle.

A heartfelt goodbye to Big Suh. I honestly will miss the intense Suuuuuuhhh! cries. Fun stuff.

Look forward to your predictions.

Counselors have been brought in to deal with A's offensive players stress levels. Seems they are in Suh panic mode manifested by the shakes and all overs.

DONU will win, one point or a 100, it doesn't matter. Go Zac and Cody. To all the seniors, play the game of your life. A salute to all of you

BTW, Skers 24, AZ 13.

Im switching sides again. The many arguments made that our offense can't score against a good defense while Watson and Lee are running it have convinced me. Therefore, I'm making the logical prediction:

4 - 2 Nebraska!

The good thing about playing a fundamentally sound team, especially with this much study time, is that the players will have gotten a good idea as to what the other team is doing. I hear that U of A has a rather small, albiet speedy, defensive front. This could be just what the doctor ordered for NU to have success running the ball, so long as the O-line doesn't let the backside catch up and get ahead of them too often. Goo Big Pancake! Now watch, now that i said that i bet NU comes out in 4/5 wide sets and plays some Air Raid.

Posted by: Insidious1 on December 29, 2009 7:21PM CST

Right now I am not predicting going to predict a the score. But, I am predicting a solid Husker win.

Things that would be fun so see. Suh scoring scoring three TDs one the fullback position, one by interception and one by a fumble recovery. And Nebraska offense to score a TD in their first possession of the game.

Wow,
Talk about hype city. Tomorrow is the big lead up to what will be a long winter and spring of no Husker football. So if the Huskers lose tomorrow, is it a step back since we won the bowl game last year or a step in the right directions since it is suppose to be a better bowl game?

They really need to work on their free-throws. Going 9 for 18 as they have so far tonight just isn't going to cut it when they get to conference play. But, they are up by 21 with 9:00 remaining in the 2nd half anyway

The game I want to see...NU 31 AZ 7 ( AZ scores a TD late in the game when the third string is in and Bo scowls). The game I'll probably see NU 16 AZ 9.

Either way the HuskerTruck folds up Foles.
GBR!!!

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on December 29, 2009 9:34PM CST
Ok well I think our offense will be much different than what its been the past few weeks.

AZ is a good football team, but all those PAC-10 teams haved small quick teams. They really don't have any size. And, because of that they wont be able to compete with the size and speed that we have.

It'll be a tough fought game, but I favor our defense and I don't think their offense will be able to produce much.

Did you see that nasty hit on Jecoby Fords legs? Thats a big time Personal Foul... no call. I would hope that if anything happened to an NU QB that the other players would mark him out for punishment the rest of the game, make him scared to even step on the field... if a few low blocks went his way, so be it.

Posted by: Guido on December 29, 2009 10:05PM CST
Insidious1 - I posted my first comment on the front page of LITR for all to see the lack of coverage. I come here for all things Husker, not just football and am disappointed that they didn't even bother to throw up a blog of any kind. Doc's boys play hard every night and they deserve better coverage. Myles Holley is starting to warm up. He had 7 points and 11 rebounds in 14 minutes tonight. I'm looking forward to seeing how Standhardinger fits into the lineup soon too.

They may not be NCAA sweet 16 caliber yet, but Doc will have them knocking on the door for a bid this year. But, just like the football team, I think that next year is the year once the young players get bigger and tougher with more experience.

The women's team though is ranked 13th and 14th and has the 5th best RPI so far this year. Connie Yori is doing a great job with the Lady Huskers team.

Posted by: huskerfever on December 29, 2009 10:06PM CST
Is it just me or does wisconsin style of defense remind you alot of nebraskas?

Posted by: Guido on December 29, 2009 10:09PM CST
And ... Hankins-Cole had 15 points in 11 minutes - but only 2 rebounds (gotta have something to work on I guess).

Posted by: Guido on December 29, 2009 10:15PM CST
The Miami kicker recovered his own onside kick! How about that! Miami trails by 6 with 1:21 to go.

Go Badgers! Play some defense!

Posted by: Insidious1 on December 29, 2009 10:19PM CST
I like the fact that a G was able to snag 11 rebounds in that game. I think NU will suprise a few teams if they can keep the offensive output up, i'm not sure if they will be able to keep Aldridge and that Texas Center from scoring. I also hope they get that haymarket park idea back up and running, all they need to do is scratch Warren Buffets back a little bit.. I wouldn't mind going to the Birkshire Hathaway Haymarket park Arena. Now if only Warren would come off some chump change. A pipe dream.. perhaps, but i've been known to have a few of those.

Posted by: Insidious1 on December 29, 2009 10:21PM CST
Why did Miami go for it on 4th and 4 on their own 30? i stopped watching after that.

Didn't like the prevent defense though before the onside kick at the end.

D- was good and the O- was good.

NU need the O .....lets hope they have it tomorrow.

Posted by: HUSKER!!!! POWER!!!! on December 29, 2009 10:45PM CST
I predict our offense will have the ball a lot. Between the DL pressure and Arizona having to throw the ball a lot to move the ball, there's going to be a lot of chances to get some turnovers in this game. I seriously doubt Watson will have his $h*t together again for another week in a row so we'll probably get a couple of field goals and one touchdown, plus a touchdown off of a turnover so I'll go...

I'm hoping they've shown the offense film of themselves when they were playing well - help them shake off the mental funk they've been in. I look for the O to open up a bit tonight. I KNOW they're much better than what we've seen recently. In fact, every other team I watch play, I keep saying, "OK. This team can move the ball. You can't tell me we don't have the talent to move the dang ball." It won’t be perfect, but I think they’ll show major signs of improvement.

My Huskers: 24
The other guys: 6

My fear is the team may be listening to some earlier media stating how exited AZ is to be in the Holiday Bowl and how it means nothing to NU. I beg to differ. I think it’s a huge game for us and have been pumped about it. My other concern is Bo actually answered questions about next season. What!? I fully expected comments like, “Right now, we’re only focusing on the Wildcats. We’ll worry about next season after this game.” I’m a geek and not a shrink, but this makes me wonder how focused we’ll be.

Why am I so confident about this game???? Perhaps it has to do with the improvement the Huskers showed last year after the 3 extra weeks to prepare.

Granted that improvement came on the defensive side of the ball, which was the emphasis.

I just feel that the emphasis was placed on the O side this year and we will see results.

Oh well, ever the optimist.

no no one sided?

I would suggest that it is as three legged stool.

O...D...ST

I would also suggest that the performance of these units has both won and lost games.

Certainly the O has had its issues. But so has the D (texas and VT) and the sp (texas TT) and the O (iowa state)

I am just not so sure it has been as one sided as many have said

On another note The UW Badgers kicked miami butt. Being born a badger (did you notice the red tops) I was quite happy.

It is interesting though that the Badger color is Cardinal but as you can see it has drifted Red. And the corn color is scarlet but it to has drifted to Red.

Anyway I am getting set up for this game.

One of my "fab-four" has a victory in a bowl and I expect another one this evening.

No No. I am hoping to see it tonight. Not really a big secret just something we have not shown much of this year which, according to the coaches was out of necessity. The secret weapon is a productive offense. One that uses both running and throwing. We have not shown that for much of the year thus it is a secret to our opponents.

Clever huh??

Posted by: PT Husker on December 30, 2009 9:44AM CST
No No. GBRTex has been pointing out the coaching job that was done this year over and over.

I think the O accepted the limitations they had and embraced the role of not turning the ball over giveing the other team feild position..

If we got the ball inside the 50 then they were asked to step up a bit which they did at times. At least well enough to go 5-1 over the last of the season.

Lots of pride swallowing went on I am sure, but no complaining that we heard. Not from the players anyway. Lot on here but that does not count.

So, if they have done the work in the last 3 weeks that I think they have, we may see a mini expolsion.

At least that is my thearoy.

Posted by: Plattcop2 on December 30, 2009 10:09AM CST
You corn-niblets fans need to get off of the crack, crystal meth or whatever it is you are using. So many predictions your pathetic 102 ranked offense is going to score 25-30 points against a top 25 defense. Hats off to the NU defense for playing so well all year long but Arizona's offense is much more diverse than the Shorthorns attack (what's left after stuffing McCoy?). They do a good job of spreading the field with their receivers and can run the ball.

Posted by: dsdevlin on December 30, 2009 10:09AM CST

Mike Leach loves pirates and everything about them. He loves pirates more than TiffenCalvert loves M-A-S-O-N W-A-L-D.

rluben, don't know yet, I haven't been given my marching orders for the day. Game time is not to be messed with but I can't guarantee the time leading up to the game. Haven't visited with Hsb2 in a couple days, hopefully he comes on here today. Not sure about 007, haven't been on much myself, but I'm sure they'll both come on today.

Posted by: HuskerzRock on December 30, 2009 10:30AM CST
Whether or not SFH is BRG I don't care.

I agree with its points only, not the attacking, on the fact that it's the holiday season, the blog isn't anyones job, and that they do it as a service and if something doesn't get put up then it just doesn't get put up.

Perhaps Mr Leach Shanghied (sp) his Law Degree.

no nothing...I believe so....I don't think he like to be pushed around.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on December 30, 2009 10:36AM CST
Exiled...TT, and most HS down here, have an inside receivers coach, an outside receivers coach and some even toss in a TE coach though most include the TE with the inside receivers. We have 16 coaches who coach football at our HS and 8 more at 2 middle schools, many others have even more.

Posted by: PT Husker on December 30, 2009 10:36AM CST
The more that comes out on the Leach deal the worse the James family and Texas Tech look. Mr leach is gonna laugh all the way to the bank on this deal.

GBRTX

The finish of your post should of read: Which is why every school in the country recruits the well coached athletes out of the state of TX!!!!

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on December 30, 2009 10:41AM CST
GBR, the NCAA limits the number of paid coaches you can have on your staff, though. Does Ruffin O'Neal coach the whole Tech defense with no assistants?

Posted by: GBR in Texas on December 30, 2009 10:44AM CST
PT/no-no...Agreed. Leach's lawyers' statements appear to mark the circling of the vultures. By them stating that they suspect that TT is wanting to fire Leach in the near future they have set themselves up to go on the attack, which I believe they will. Since this is a prediction thread, though I don't do the predict the score thing, I will predict that Leach will coach the Alamo Bowl; Leach will collect his $800,000 payment; Leach will file a lawsuit against TTU and possibly the James family; Craig James will not be employed by ESPN in the near future. How's that?

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on December 30, 2009 10:44AM CST
No No,

You can obsess about recruiting nonsense for another 5 weeks, and then it's only a couple months until spring practice...

Posted by: GBR in Texas on December 30, 2009 10:45AM CST
Good point Trash. People just wouldn't believe the amount of money that is spent on football down here.

Morning

Leach is a lawyer/coach
Starting to remind me of another lawyer/coach who was constantly in trouble with the administration and tanked a couple of programs with his hubris. You may remember him, an honest golden boy type by the name of Rick Nuehisel.

Posted by: rluben on December 30, 2009 10:47AM CST
SFH does have some good points , I don't think anyone thinks he doesn't, he also can be pretty witty, and easy to get along with, but then that switch goes off.

Anyways, the whole Wats, Cody Green, Offense, this n that thing is so played out. There's not a fan on the planet of the Huskers that doesn't know we had some issues on O and at QB and with some of the play calling ect.

The only question is do you believe they will turn it around next year or do you think not.

I am pretty confident that they will, so I'm over it, even if it's the same ol same ol tonight. I also believe we will have some serious depth on O next year at most positions.

Oh....you were talking about the subject of his rant on the main page.

Well, I don't even have an opinion really about the subject matter, the LJS does what it does when it does it as far as I'm concerned.

But I can understand wanting a blog about a subject too, to maybe create some interest. The BB has been neglected this year, last year there were game blogs for it usually, but not a whole lot of interest.

Good idea, Guido can try that next time, all he has to do is post what's up on a blog subject and he might get some interest.

I'm working on a project at the hospital to put Huskers in suspended animation until the next season. The theory is I inject you with a med and to all your loved ones you act normal ie take out the trash, mow the lawn, the odd shopping with the misses when in fact your asleep and not aware of anything. You don't age. Then I wake you up in mid July. I need a volunteer to try it on, any takers?

Posted by: TomOs on December 30, 2009 10:54AM CST
Maybe someone else already mentioned it.. but how about Mike Leach for our OC.. that would shake up a few..

Posted by: NishBigRed on December 30, 2009 10:55AM CST
Yes Rluben,
I am the one who jinx the Husker back in 94. Thats why I have not betted on the Huskers since.
I felt just awfull when I collected my earnings for the bet.

PS
You don't wear you husker underoos no more? So it's you to blame for 2003 and on. underoos and Calahan, I can see a definite connection.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on December 30, 2009 10:56AM CST
Exiled...the NCAA does limit the number coaches a school can have, the number escapes me right now, as well as the number of GA's and part timers. But at the HS level no such limit exists. The HS in Dallas where Matthew Stafford went to school is one where almost all of the coaches who coach football do not coach a 2nd sport, whereas most other schools do have football coaches coach a 2nd sport. Offseason football is considered their 2nd sport.

Posted by: PT Husker on December 30, 2009 10:58AM CST
I think the off season will be just fine if we choose to make it that way. We can look at the progress the team is making in year 3 of the transition. We can be excited about the influx of talent that is coming off of Redshirts as well as new recruits. We can realize just how young this team was this year and the way they bonded together as a unit to maximize success.

To me the only slightly depressing thing will be life without Suh. I know the team will be fine but that guy was just a blast to watch. For that I will miss him.

Otherwise, I am excited about the future.

I know there will be Naysayers as that is the nature of things, but I will co exist with them as they have their opinions as well.

Except for No No, who is not a naysayer in my book. Just asks probing questions.

GO BIG BRIGHT FUTURE.

TomOs,

I don't think Leach can go back to being just a coordinator. He runs his practices in such a different manner than any other head coach...

Plus, it doesn't seem like he can handle respecting someone else's authority...

Posted by: Gofor2 on December 30, 2009 11:01AM CST
I think the writers are a bunch of lazy bums.
There's more info from posters about current stuff then from those slackers. They were way late on the SUH story.
But otherwise them seem OK, in fact I want their job.

Did anyone read the LJS article when you opened the Husker Extra page? The one to the left..."PELINI: No Finger Pointing Allowed!" Very good article. Kind of lends credence to what I've been saying for so long (said while beating chest)!

Todd Peterson, and I am sure you remember him, was interviewed by Bob Hamar of the Grand Island Indpendent in this morning's issue. He had some great things to say about Watson and Bo Pelini. He said while the offense has struggled this year he is not worried about it's directdion. He has watched the Huskers all year both on the sidelines and watching on TV. He sees this offense improving and getting much better.

He basically said what GBR in Texas has been saying for quite awhile.

Is it game time yet?

FoxTV in Lubbock is reporting that the Leach hearing is public but no cameras will be allowed in the courtroom. They are reporting that Leach's lawyers are saying that their belief is that if Leach wins the hearing that TT will fire Leach to keep him from coaching in the Alamo Bowl. That, or fire him immediately after the game. It is being reported that Leach is still in contact with the team and coaches thru all of this and is staying on top of the game plans and day to day goings on. This thing is ugly and is only going to get uglier.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on December 30, 2009 11:19AM CST

What does TT have to gain by firing Leach....do they have better coach in mind?

I don't know LCH. I'm sure he's difficult to deal with on a daily basis. I'm sure his drinking issues early on have come back to the surface. I'm not sure if he still has a "handler" but he did for a large portion of the time that he's been there.

Posted by: rluben on December 30, 2009 11:26AM CST
Yeah, that is a good article GBRTX, you could tell it is that way too throughout this season. Kinda nice how close knit they are as a team.

Call it attacking if you want.....I call it taking offense to something that was said...

I took offense to someone downplaying the job the LJS staff does....calling it "shameful"...give me a break.

And quit being such a hypocrite, BRG bipolar boy. Just 2-3 days ago you were BUSTING ON SIPPLE and basically calling him out on a thread telling him he wasn't doing his job very good or something along those lines.

Coulda been BC, but I think it was Sip you made the comment about.

Goofball, don't make me go find it bipolar boy.

So what you are saying is only you can call out the staff?

lol, like I said...pure goofball BGR stuff dude.

You aren't fooling anyone around here.

My thoughts,
It seems like every year (the last 2) there has been issues with Leach and TT. I asked this yeasterday, would Leach be a good fit coaching the Gators? I haven't seen anything if they have a replacement for Meyer?

I think it's time for Leach to move on from TT, he has taken them as far as they can go. I actually think Leach would be better suited in the NFL and the circus atmosphere.

Leech = Jerry Glanville is just me or is there similarities?

Posted by: Low Country Husker on December 30, 2009 11:37AM CST
Nish

Meyer is just taking a leave of absence so no need for a coach right now. But I agree he would be a fit for the NFL....could you imagine him coaching the Cowboys?

Posted by: Islander/Husker on December 30, 2009 11:42AM CST
Regarding the Leach issue, whenever courts and Lawyers are involved it's not going to end pretty.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on December 30, 2009 11:42AM CST
LCH, you would need more than one tent for that circus!

Posted by: NishBigRed on December 30, 2009 11:43AM CST
lol,
I thought of that the other day. Leach, Jerry Jones, only think TO is gone.
Can you imagine Leach telling TO to take his exercise bike and go sit in the closet?

TO needs to come out of the closet not, ride his bike in one.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on December 30, 2009 11:44AM CST
That is 'absolutely' true I/H.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on December 30, 2009 11:49AM CST
I am sorry, I just can't see Leach being successful in the NFL. Spurrier thought his passing offense would be be successful in the NFL, it fell with a loud thud. I think Leach's would as well.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on December 30, 2009 11:52AM CST
Islander

I was just kidding.....professionals wouldn't put up with his antics. Not sure what the truth is in TT but it won't matter now that lawyers got involved.

ESPN just reported that TT has fired Mike Leach!

Posted by: NishBigRed on December 30, 2009 12:06PM CST
Wowzza,
Now thats crazy.
First Mangino and Leach, who's next?

Posted by: GBR in Texas on December 30, 2009 12:12PM CST
Leach being due a bonus payment of $800,000 tomorrow has something to do with this. There will be a massive legal battle over this and TT will pay much more than that in legal fees. Yes, Leach is a 'goofball' of the 'Nth' degree. But that being said, he has been the best thing that has ever happened to TT football. I hope the James kid gets out of San Antonio asap...the term "frag" comes to mind!

BREAKING NEWS: 11:55a.m. - Sources tell FOX 34 Texas Tech has fired Mike Leach as head football coach.

Before the hearing this morning, Mike Leach's personal attorney, Ted Liggett, received a letter from Texas Tech signed by President Guy Bailey terminating Leach's employment effective immediately.

According to the letter, Leach is in violation of Article Four of his contract. That's the performance clause, which deals with the health and welfare of players.

Liggett tells FOX 34 Leach will be filing a lawsuit against the University "soon."

Oh how this is going to get ugly. If they fired him 'before' the hearing I suspect the TT brass were of the feeling that they would lose the hearing which would complicate the firing. It's official...the TT football program is in shambles. Expect a mass exodus in the way of players and recruits.

Posted by: NishBigRed on December 30, 2009 12:24PM CST
One just has to laugh,
In this day and age of wining at all cost.

Leach takes A program that has lost more than t won, builds them into a decent program. Even made some noise in the BCS by beating Texas. (Great game last year). I started rooting for TT hoping they would make it to the BCS last year. So he is fired, because of his antics.
On the other hand you have Hawkins who doesn’t win and isn’t fired because the University can’t afford to buy out his contract.

Then you have Mangino who would still be coaching if he had just listened to Jarred. So you can be fired as a coach, win or lose, or not be fired for losing. I’m confused.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on December 30, 2009 12:25PM CST
Spike Dykes did a good job for TT, really laid the foundation for what Leach took over. TT is a weird clan anyway, so I can't help but think this is almost a form of implosion of some sort.

Posted by: NishBigRed on December 30, 2009 12:32PM CST
GBR,
Great point regarding the exodus of their players and recruits.

So are we bad Husker fan or good Husker fan is we suggest we pillage TT of all their star players and recruits?

Posted by: Uncle Fester on December 30, 2009 2:00PM CST
GBR in Texas--Of course, I know nothing more than sources like ESPN put out, so you know where I start from. But with first a suspension followed the next day by a termination, it doesn't appear that the powers that be at TT and their lawyers really thought things out from the beginning and came up with a game plan.

Would TT suspend a professor only on the strength of one student's reported allegations without some kind of due process? Man, the teacher's union would go ballistic. And then the next day just before a hearing, TT fires Leach, making the hearing moot. Why didn't they just fire him the first day? And if they really wanted him out, just swallow hard and buy out the contract. To make matters worse, there could be no connection whatsoever, but when people read that Leach was entitled to $800K in a few days, like Sip, they draw a conclusion. What do think, GBR, is there intelligent life at the apex of TT?

Posted by: Guido on December 30, 2009 2:41PM CST
Does TT have any WR recruits that we were looking at too? :)
