Postgame: Huskers 10, Sooners 3
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on November 8, 2009 at 12:27AM CST

Well, well, well....

The Huskers had seven first downs. They punted 11 times. They, they, won?

Yes, how about those Blackshirts?

"I'm just proud of this whole football team," Bo Pelini said. "There were 87 total (defensive) plays and they sucked it up and found a way and I'm proud of that team tonight."

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops didn't know if he'd ever been apart of a loss where his defense played so well. "You force 11 punts away from home, and I think they were 1-of-14 on third down, you feel like you've got a good chance to win the game. I would say the difference is (they got) the one turnover to set up their touchdown, and we didn't get a turnover. That's how close this game was, and defensively, we really did play well."

Phillip Dillard and Matt O'Hanlon both said they had the best games of their lives. O'Hanlon's three interceptions ties a school record. He also had a career-high 12 tackles.

Dillard was just as much a maniac on the field. He had eight tackles, two of those for loses, a sack and a huge interception.

"It just shows the character of this defense and everyone believes in the system and believes in each other," Pelini said. "It's like a brotherhood. We've got each other's back on offense and defense."

*****

A note on Larry Asante. He was injured late in the third quarter. Marvin Sanders said he was told Asante had suffered a concussion but hadn't spoken to the trainers yet. Asante looked fine after the game, fielding some questions from reporters.

*****

Zac Lee said "this is the best feeling I've had in football, to be honest right now."

"We have some great guys on this team and we love each other," he said. "That really showed."

Cody Green said it was an moetional game "and I guess you could say I just got caught up in it I guess. "There's really not much to it. Big game. People do that."

******

If you're wondering, OU field-goal kicker Tress Way has just been given that job two weeks ago. He obviously had a rough night, missing two kicks and having another blocked.

BAM!!!

The score is the only thing that counts at the end of the game.

Go Big Red!

BAM!!!

I ****ing love this defense!

This game happened to be the lowest scoring output for Oklahoma during the Bob Stoops era. AMAZING!

This may be the best Husker D ever. They are winning all by themselves!

Positive vibes! Excellent!

Will the fans enjoy this victory, a great defensive battle? Or will they spend the week looking at who should get fired again.

This is a young staff and a young group of kids. Maybe there will be changes made after this year, but nows the time to cheer for their victory. Support this team for the rest of the year and get behind them.

They all worked hard and deserve your support.

We won't face that good of a Defense until the Bg12 championship game I hope.
Great win!
A little tense at the end, but the Huskers found a way to close the deal.

Posted by: TommyOC on November 8, 2009 12:45AM CST
A little tense at the end? I was on the edge the entire game. That was one of the best defensive football games I've ever seen. Unfortunately, everyone will harp on how bad the offenses were. This is the same OU team that score 45 last weekend.

It was fun to watch a game like this. Don't get to see this in college much. Well, unless you watch the SEC. They are all defense. LOL

Posted by: JeffNe1 on November 8, 2009 12:49AM CST
Tommy, I agree that this was a great positive win.

SO..quit trying to bait others into bringing up the negative.

Posted by: boom.roasted on November 8, 2009 12:49AM CST
One of the greatest defensive performances I've ever seen. 87 plays, and only 3 points? jeez.

Posted by: SuperHusker17 on November 8, 2009 12:52AM CST
What a great day. Got to go down to the LJS blogger's ball before the game which was cool and then go to a game like that? I have to say seeing a blow out where we win would be kinda cool but close wins are always exciting and make it fun to be apart of. After seeing KSU and KU play they both looked terrible but I can't say our offense looks any better. I think it was interesting to see Lee stay in the game. I don't know that Green was really doing anything wrong but he was doing about the same as what Lee did. I just feel like if we have Lee in, put him under center, if we have Green in then have him in the shotgun. I don't think anyone is going to believe Lee is going to bust off a big run and it's not going to make people stay home on D. But after seeing how Landry Jones did so terrible it almost has to make you feel kinda good.

Posted by: Long Necks on November 8, 2009 12:57AM CST
Great win Huskers! We're getting closer and closer - now let's take down the rest of the North and get to Dallas.

Posted by: duke of omaha on November 8, 2009 1:00AM CST
Sooners moved the ball between the 20's but the Huskers really picked it up when it mattered. Like others have said , with an average offense, no one would want to play us.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on November 8, 2009 1:19AM CST
First OU game since 1998 where they haven't scored a TD!

Gotta say we are kicking some butt lately!

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on November 8, 2009 1:21AM CST
They should add henry had 481 yrds on those 11 punts... gotta be a record

Posted by: BleedingRed on November 8, 2009 1:24AM CST
This may be the best team defense that we have ever had.

What an amazing feat by the defense.

87 plays and 3 points by OU is beyond incredible.

Posted by: Viking Husker on November 8, 2009 1:24AM CST
When I die of a heart attack, it will be watching football. God willing, it will be watching a win similar to the one tonight.

Go Big Red. To death do us part.

This is the first time in the history of football that the "play not to lose" offense has won a game.

Somewhere, Frank Solich is smiling.

I kept waitng for OU to hit a big play on us like a dagger thru the heart...

BUT it NEVER CAME!

wooohooo, GBR!

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on November 8, 2009 1:50AM CST
bruNo:

We learned from VT and ISU how bad that hurts. Plus i don't think the team wanted to see tomorrow in the LJS the headline: OU Big Play kills 700 Husker Fans

lol

Posted by: NishBigRed on November 8, 2009 1:53AM CST
Well does the Zak vs Cody discusstion discussion go way for a week. Or starts tomorrow?

I think I'm outta here for now, gonna watch a few dvr games, then hit it, maybe pull a 'dawner'....

I'm so happy, woohoo!

nite to all korn peeps, sayers and naysayers alike!

Posted by: Viking Husker on November 8, 2009 1:59AM CST
bruNo,
You summed it up nicely. Believed we would win it, but waited on baited breath for the O'Sh!t moment when it all fell apart.

Kudo's to our beloved Blackshirts

Special thanks to O'Hanlon. You've O'made up for the O'sh!t moment against VT

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on November 8, 2009 2:12AM CST
Honestly O'Hanlon really didn't mess up vs VT imo.

He really did what he was supposed to.

He saw Tyrod Taylor scrambling and it looked like he might run out of the pocket and run for it... so he stepped up to stop that from happening and Taylor was able to get into a spot where he could throw it and that caused that WR to get open

I honestly think O'Hanlon was doing what he was supposed to

Posted by: Viking Husker on November 8, 2009 2:14AM CST
As the only remaining Husker fan still up at this hour, I'd like to say:

BRING ON THE HORNS!

GBR!

Posted by: Viking Husker on November 8, 2009 2:22AM CST
HSB2:
I respectfully disagree. I think we were in Cover 2, which means the safety, IE; O'Hanlon, has hash to sideline. As a DB, your 1st responsibility always has to be to respect the pass, regardless of any run fake.

So when the pass went deep, it was his responsibility to cut it off. IMO

Posted by: bcpdad on November 8, 2009 2:40AM CST
Did anyone watch espn saturday night?

This was a great win 10-3.

Did espn say a word about how great our D played?

180 yds total offense.

ISU 9 Neb 7 Seven points,, IOWA F***kin state.

Did anyone say how great our D played in that one???

If the O doesnt pull its head out, TX 43 KS f###ingU 7 in the big twelve championship game!

Apples and Oranges. KSU allowed 45 v. OU. We are not OU

Strike that. We are not KSu

Posted by: Husker Charmer on November 8, 2009 3:23AM CST
Glad we hung in there for the win. Our defense is a great thing to watch. Hope our offense can catch up soon!

Seemed like some of my fellow fans were trying to make a fool out of Berry Tramel who wrote a column this week about the courtesy and sportsmanship of Nebraska fans.

Posted by: Hypno Potomus on November 8, 2009 4:11AM CST
Wow! Went to the game and just rolled home at 20 til 4am. drank way too much. hell of a game by th e defense. good thing I'm typing because I can hardly speak.
My question is, why put in Zac Lee and continue running the same option, zone reads and traps that weren't working when Green was QB? I thought they would open up the playbook a bit. Lot's of upset folks in my section. The Huskers should have won by 21.
Anyway, feeling pretty damn good right now.

Posted by: Hypno Potomus on November 8, 2009 4:36AM CST
according to ESPN, 3 points is the lowest total in the bob Stoops era. Go Big Defense!

Posted by: Islander/Husker on November 8, 2009 4:54AM CST
I think at half time, Bo and Watson decided the way to play the second half, was to have no mistakes, no turnovers, try to run the clock some and just let our defense win the game. I know some fans in the seats may have been upset, but I think that was the perfect way to do it. Run the ball up the middle, don't go crazy with the passing game and come home with a victory. Each game has it's own dynamics, and the object is to get the W. We did that. I will not second guess. Great game, two great defenses, we won. End of story. Out defemse sold out. Played with great passion.

Saw an interview with Cody Green with 10/11, what a class act. No pouting, and he was smiling and very happy with the win. He said it was a very fun game to be a part of. He has his priorities in order. And Dillard, man this guy is another team guy, and the past 7 games has played better each game. I am so happy for him.

Go Big Red.

I'm here in Oklahoma and probably the happiest person alive in Oklahoma. It was headline news when the 10 o'clock news came on. It has been 11 years (1998) since Oklahoma had not scored at least one touchdown in a football game. That's back when Black was the head coach in Oklahoma. Great Win, Great possible turning point. Sooner or later the offense has to come around. All they have to do is improve just a little to make this team that much better! GO BIG RED!

Posted by: no nothing on November 8, 2009 7:11AM CST
The mighty spread offense has made two once great football programs, very average. One other thing, the 12th man and O'Hanlon had a great game last night. The bottom line is we won and now there are three more to go!

last night was probably the loudest game i've been to. Recruits had to be impressed. I was watching them walk off the field after the game, coach Eckeler was jumping around and hugging them. I'd be shocked if we don't get some commits.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on November 8, 2009 7:49AM CST
NO NO

It must have been an amazing game to see in the stands. What a great win for Bo and the program....the Team is getting better!

Posted by: Dave on November 8, 2009 7:52AM CST
I agree Corky, if any recruits who attended that game don't sign on the dotted line here, somebody must be paying them to go somewhere else.

It couldn't have been a better situation. Prime-time game on ABC, and the crowd was unbelievably loud and energetic for the entire game.

Impressive showing by the blackshirts.

Posted by: no nothing on November 8, 2009 8:18AM CST
LCH. It was a fun game and what a nice night for football. What I really enjoyed was the halftime presentation. They had a number of the great OU and NU players on the field at halftime. It was very nice. Sims, Rozier, Rodgers, Switzer, Tom, Shields, Crouch, Remmington, Pruitt, Kinney, Washington, Hyphel, Bradford in sling, and Owens. I am sure I am missing some of them and could be incorrect with some of them too. Anyway, that was nice. Barry received a standing ovation and that was kind of special IMO. Sorry about the spelling errors.

Posted by: WHTRASHERO on November 8, 2009 8:21AM CST
What a Defensive game. Thank God Sam Bradford was out. What a win! But seriously we have some major offensive issues. Barney Cotton really needs to get the line playing better Phsyically there not doing it and if that isn't bad enough Mentally there not doing it. A team should not have that many false starts and dumb penality's this late in the season that lays on coaching. Great win though! If Nebraska had some sort of an O there a top 10 team. Defense wins games and it showed!

Posted by: salmon_slayer63 on November 8, 2009 8:33AM CST
Well that was an ugly, ugly game. 3 yards and a cloud of dust.

Thank god Bo is here or we never ever win that game.

If we can find any sort of offense we will be ok. Play calling while boring was pretty good since we are prone to making big time mistakes. Play it close to the vest! Win on turnovers and special teams. Thats the playbook for this year!!

Posted by: no nothing on November 8, 2009 8:35AM CST
Brian.

I just read the game report card and you were very nice to them last night on offense. The win must have been the difference maker.

39 total yards passing for a West Coast, Spread or Multiple offense is a C?

This was a great game and I wish I would've taped to watch again today. I couldn't hardly sit and watch the whole thing, I was soooo nervous. Kudo's to the Husker Defense, WHAT A GAME, they played lights out and finished it through. The never give up defense, they really have changed and they are just soooo much fun to watch!

Posted by: Low Country Husker on November 8, 2009 8:37AM CST
If the result the rest of the year is the same as last night I can live with an under achieving O and an amazing D. The scoreboard is ultimately the most important factor in a game....get the W!

Posted by: Miller on November 8, 2009 8:49AM CST
LCH I feel the same way, but it is some what frustrating and painful to watch the offense, I just hope they can keep improving. I'll take a win anyway we can get it. Last nights game was sooooo awesome and so exciting, the Husker Defense has just been phenomenal. I can't wait to talk to Will Compton's dad to get his take on the game.

I hope we land some recruits that came in this weekend, any defensive player that didn't enjoy that game has to be nuts, and they would be coached by two of the best defensive coaches around the P brothers. All of our defensive coaches are great, just love Carl and Bo's mentality.

Posted by: Jedi Husker on November 8, 2009 8:49AM CST
The 12th man was INCREDIBLE last night! I watched the game on ESPN360 out here in Virginia, and listened to it on Husker Radio over the Internet.

The crowd was SUPER LOUD the entire game! I am so proud of our team, but even prouder of my fellow Husker fans. Husker Fans Rock!!!

Go Big Red Forever!

Posted by: huskermike on November 8, 2009 9:06AM CST
with this offense i think the basketball team may be able to outscore them.

maybe ohanlon blew it against vt, but didn't he also run him down to make the tackle? if he quits like in the bc days nu doesn't have a chance at the end. props to the "D". the offense needs to get it in gear or the recruits will go elsewhere.

Posted by: HuskerzVA on November 8, 2009 9:09AM CST
My blood pressure was so high last night I felt like I had a fever! What a defense!!! GBR!!!

Posted by: Low Country Husker on November 8, 2009 9:14AM CST
Did anyone else hear the announcers say that 9 of the starting 11 players on offense were playing injured/hurt? They made a point to say the entire O line is battling injuries....is that true? Would explain alot.....we've seen what happens when an exceptional player (Helu) tries to play hurt.....

Posted by: HuskerzVA on November 8, 2009 9:16AM CST
I hope we keep running out of the I formation.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on November 8, 2009 9:19AM CST
with only 14 passes attempted you have to believe the game plan was to just try to run and if that didn't work kick it as far you can and let the D save you. It didn't appear like they wanted to give OU a pick six opportunity.....if that was the plan they played it to perfection.

Posted by: TruBlueRed on November 8, 2009 9:23AM CST
OK defense is probably about equal with ours, so I will take the 10 pts the offense scored against them and happily enjoy the win. The O-Line problem and receivers won't be fixed this year, much like it took the defense from last year another year to find themselves......with the same coaches. So have some patience and enjoy some great defensive battles the rest of the year:) I think the atmosphere of the stadium and the way the team stood together will appeal to any recruits.

Posted by: huskergjt on November 8, 2009 9:26AM CST
Mr. O'Hanlon,

Some guys were trashing you on this site last weeek because you dropped a couple interceptions....thank you for prooving them wrong....and congratulations for playing your heart out for our DONU.

To the whole team congratulations.

Posted by: rankrider21 on November 8, 2009 9:27AM CST
Here is something that is off the subject. On today Yahoo Front page there is a big story about Boise St. Everybody should read it.

It talks about how nobody and in particular Nebraska wont play Boise St. They aren't asking for anything but a fair shake when it comes to playing the big boys. I think as the most knowledgeable and respected fans in the the world that we would want to apply some pressure to Harvey about playing Boise St. ESPN has already said that the game would be national televised.

I know that Boise St. has probably one of the best coaches out there and Chris Peterson probably get more miles from his kids then anyone could but I see as hey it really could help us in recuiting and boy could we use the help in recuiting some offensive players with speed and size.

I don't know what the answer is I just know that they are looking to play somebody Sept. 3 and oh by the way we have an open date that weekend and look at our schedule next year can you say that it really is pathetic.

I don't know where it became wrong to challenge our kids and if they fail it was the end of the world. Because being the father of three boys I know that I need to challenge the boys all the time so that they will be perpared for what life throws at them when they leave. Yes I try and pick them up after they fail but I also expect them to rise up also.

Our football team is the same are we preparing them for the next level the ones who make it or are we setting them up for failure.

I think that we should email Harvey and Bo and tell them as fans we want a tough schedule and the BCS be dammed. I say bring on a play-off and get a true champion.

This is just my opinion and I don't mean to make anyone upset with this. I would just like to know how other people see this.

RR 21

A good long discussion on that subject on the "party on" thread if you care to read all those opinions.

Posted by: Miller on November 8, 2009 9:33AM CST
LCH, on your last post about pick six and passes, you are right, they played that right and with OU's Deffense, we could've been in trouble. Thank goodness Stoops didn't plan his game that way, NU with 5 IT's, awesome and one to set up the only TD in the game. Also have to thank Way for missing FG's and Suh for the blocked FG. This game could've gone to either team that didn't make mistakes and luckily it was our turn and the mistakes went to OU for the NU win. Lights out Defense on the NU side and we have to give credit to our Offense for hanging on to the ball when they had it, 1 fumble and it produces 0 points (I think). WE WIN and that's all that counts!

I heard a little from Stoops but I didn't hear him say they played against a great defense, did he give any credit to NU, or just excuses for his team. Not to be mean, just curious!

I figured there would be a circle around OHanlons sack.

Look... dude caught 3 INT's. Good for him. He also came up and made a couple of plays in the run game. He had bunches of tackles. Good for him. He deserves credit for those plays. No doubt he is well coached.

On the other hand... he made one of the worst plays I have ever seen when he was standing around and got obliterated whilst Murray almost scored on a long TD run. What was he doing? Then he dropped an INT... of course. He made ZERO plays on the ball... of course. There is only one college football player with worse ball skills. Larry Asante. Anyways... he had a horrible holding call on a 3rd & long also. The bonehead plays continue.

Yeah... great game by OHanlon. Give him credit. The best he's ever played. Good for him. He's also average at best.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 8, 2009 10:01AM CST

Now on to everybodies favorite subject.

It's hard to say anything about the O. For those wanting a run game and option scheme. You got it. I will say it was the best scheme we have seen. That said... 7-14... 39 yards... 1 TD... is mindblowingly inept.

A 3rd & long shovel pass to Mike McNeil? Really? Wats thought that was gonna work? And people back him as OC? That is the kind of playcall that all you can do is laugh at.

Also... The CENTRAL IDEA... the WHOLE IDEA... when running an option play it to block a defensive player with somebody that normally could not block him(i.e. the QB). How long is it gonna take Lee to figure that out? SELL THAT OPTION AND BRING SOMEBODY TO YOU BEFORE YOU PITCH THE BALL! DAMN!!!

This is the last thing I'll say about Wats.

We... are... now... officially... running... CU's... offense... of... the... early... 2000's.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 8, 2009 10:03AM CST
PJ Smith came in and played well after Asante knocked himself out on that tackle. Good news for the future.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 8, 2009 10:07AM CST
I was surprised so many thought this game was over before it was played.

Another lesson learned for you.

Football is won up front on the LOS. When OU has their 3rd string C in there... and a guy that started at TE a few weeks ago as two of the 3 interior Olineman... and you have the nations best Dline on your side... you have a chance to win. Period.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on November 8, 2009 10:12AM CST
This is the last thing I'll say about Wats.

We... are... now... officially... running... CU's... offense... of... the... early... 2000's.
_______________________________

Not trying to sound too much like a smart A** but wasn't it a foregone conclusion that if you hire the Col Offensive Coordinator there is a great chance that he would implement the offense he was known for? I sure didn't think he would suddenly become a Power I guru because he came to NU. The fans got what they asked for an offense like the OU, Florida's and yes Colorado of the early 2000s. Not saying I like it but it is what it is....at least for this year.....time will tell if Bo will morph this O team into more of his style. (hard nosed and unrelenting)

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 8, 2009 10:13AM CST
The much maligned Oline and Oline coach... really came through for us. Good for them.

I had thought to myself last week. We oughtta just tell the Oline we are gonna run it 3 times... and if you can't get a 1st down we will lose. Well... basically.. thats what we did.

And I really didn't like it after I saw it.

I don't know what we are gonna do.

Posted by: Old School Husker on November 8, 2009 10:20AM CST
StepnRazor... get off OHanlons butt and enjoy the victory. He is just a college kid. you always act like king bully on here. enjoy the victory and bring your negative stuff to the table on monday. if you can't enjoy that game as a husker then you need to find a new "hobby".

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 8, 2009 10:23AM CST
LCH))) You would think they would have figure dthat out.

Truth be told... I thought Barnett had his greasy paws all over Watsons absurd offense of the early 2000's at CU. Then we have been seeing what we had seen. It was FAR from the 2000's CU O.

It's here now.

Technically... I like this style is better. Running Helu into a wall at -1 yard in better than watching Lee run around like an old woman till he gets sacked.

Both sides of Watson O are biuzarre and broken in todays college football.

In all honesty... I can't call Watson "Greg Davis" anymore. Greg Davis has a much more threatening O. It's a disgrace to the ultra conservative Greg Davis.

Posted by: RetiredArmyGuy on November 8, 2009 10:33AM CST
I wish we had CU's offense from the Friday after Thanksgiving in 2001 .............. thats the early 2000's isn't it

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 8, 2009 10:33AM CST
Old School Husker))) you get off OHanlons sack and enjoy the victory if and when we win next week.

This victory means nothing to me. Everybody jumped up and down after we beat Mizzou. I expected to beat Mizzou. I also said it would mean nothing if we didn't beat Teck the week after. We lost. I was right.... again.

I expected to beat OU. The true test comes next week.... and the next week... and the next week.

If we win the next 3... you'll see me on here enjoying the victory. Until then... this win means nothing.

Posted by: Viking Husker on November 8, 2009 10:34AM CST
I cannot remember a better defensive performance...ever. Great job, boys. Always sweet to prove the doubters wrong.

StepnRazor: I am not an offensive minded guy, but this offense has worked in the past with experienced, healthy kids. The fact that we are young and "dinged up" suggests that it may not be the scheme that is the problem.

actually they appeared to be successful running the ball when they ran with a FB and pulled the line...Helu was shifty enough to make that work

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 8, 2009 10:36AM CST
Retired Army))) Thats the one we are talking about.

Thats the one we'd all high 5 and laugh at... every other year than 2001 of course.

One game don't make a scheme brother. Watson is a joke.

If you give up 400 yards and 60 poijnts to Shawn Watson... you should get fired. And he did.

Posted by: drivebyposter on November 8, 2009 10:37AM CST
at some point the O has to break out. It will not be with green as he is well green

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 8, 2009 10:41AM CST
Viking))) When did Watsons O work?

He's only had one O that finished in the top 20. Ever. Thats what you want as our OC? I think we can do better.

In fact... we are going to do better. Watsons days are numbered. He's got this year and probably another. That'll be it.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 8, 2009 10:45AM CST
LCH))) Shocker! Not sure how Wats figured out a fullback would help.... but he did! Hooray for us!

He must be evolving into a thinking man. I'll bet he gets opposable thumbs 5 years down the road.

Posted by: Viking Husker on November 8, 2009 10:46AM CST
Step, here's my argument:

When Bo was hired we were specifically looking for a D type guy because our O wasn't an issue.

Bo kept Watson on because...well, our O wasn't an issue.

Just last year with Ganz, Peterson, Swift, and 2 healthy backs we scored a lot.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 8, 2009 10:49AM CST
Anyways... a fist pumping BAM!!! for the D.

BAM!!!

They did what we thought they would. Dominate a depleted OU offense.

I think we have a shot to beat KSU, KU and CU. And thats all we want. We want a shot at Texas and North "title".

This was a step in the right direction. But we have a loooooong ways to go.

Posted by: bruNo on November 8, 2009 10:51AM CST
When Busie and Step have their 1st kid(out of wedlock, of course) they will definitely NOT name him 'Shawn', of this we can be certain...

Great game. Had to watch on espn360.
Great D. NU looks to be back with the Blackshirts.
Now time to work on the O.

Posted by: bruNo on November 8, 2009 10:56AM CST
woohoo, was an army of 1 on the streets of Massachusetts, 4 a.m., singing, "..there is no place like NUH-braaaska...dear ol' NUH-braaaska UUUU....!"...

no one out here notices, of course...

Posted by: Corky on November 8, 2009 10:56AM CST
Viking, If i remember right, Osborne kept Watson on. Bo didn't have much to do with that.

Step, i hate to bash coaches after beating a team like Oklahoma, but i have to agree with you about Watson. If our game plan was to run the ball 98% of the time, why didn't we put Green back in after the TD. No rhyme or reason to some of the things he does.

I wonder what Oklahoma fans are saying about their offense?

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 8, 2009 10:57AM CST
Viking)) I know. We got many yards and points Vs the Big 12 D's... outside of OU and Mizzou of course. We also struggled Vs average defenses in Clemson and CU. Personally... I get a good ole deep down belly chuckle when I hear people talk about how great our O was last year. I though it kinda sucked.

We'll see what happens. My guess is... we lost a great offensive mind in HWSNBN. In a few months... our so called powerful offense has morphed into the CU O of the 2000's. Not a good sign imo.

But like I said... we'll see.

Just a warning though. What I predict... usually happens. For I am smaaaarter than the average monkey. I say Watson has 2 years left. Mark it down.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on November 8, 2009 10:57AM CST
Back in 1988 the Huskers beat OU 7-3....anyone old enough to remember if the fans were calling for coaches heads....I was out of country during that time so I don't remember why that score was so low....was the D's that good or the O's that bad?

Posted by: bruNo on November 8, 2009 10:58AM CST
Watson's offense is 'elementary my dear'...ha ha, made that 1 up myself...

Posted by: bruNo on November 8, 2009 11:00AM CST
LCH,
i dont recall the specs of that game, but I can tell you that any win over OU EVER was a celebrated thing, but I'm sure there was a faction of whiners back then...if we didnt win most games(exception of OU) by 30 something was 'wrong'.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 8, 2009 11:01AM CST
LCH))) In a 1988 OU had one of the greatest defenses in college football.

Why would anybody be crying for coaches heads?

Did we get 7 Vs ISU that year or something I do not remember?

Posted by: big red machine on November 8, 2009 11:03AM CST
What does it say about our future when Cody Green is not good enough to beat out Zac Lee? We have some major problems on 0ffense! Is our talent on offense just that poor, or is it what were trying to do not suited to their skill? I think we need to recruit some studs on offense! Hope the defense can shut out our last three opponents because our offense just sucks!

Step, what say you on the Fla/Ala conference title game? Just curious

Posted by: bruNo on November 8, 2009 11:10AM CST
They were saying last night that some pro scouts think Matty O can play @ the next level. If Scott Shanle can, Matty O can, IMO.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on November 8, 2009 11:11AM CST
Step

Since you asked the Huskers scored 51 on the clones that year....but a week before they put up 7 against OU they managed to score 7 against the puffs then went to a bowl game and scored 3 against Miami....that's why I asked what happened in 1988 at the end of the season......I'm sure some of the old dogs will remember it like yesterday......Islander, PT....anyone? Just curious

Missed you at the LITR Clive at Five.

Step
Who would you suggest hiring for an offensive coordinator?

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 8, 2009 11:12AM CST
Corky is right. Osborne recommended Watson and Gilmore stay.

Corky... the Green thing is mindboggling. I think it's because Watson always does what it illogical. And thats that.

After watching Lee struggle game after game... Green gets 4 series and is pulled. Your guess is as good as mine.

Anybody that thinks Bo and Wats aren't rolling in the dirt, scratching each others eyes over the starting QB... as was leaked to the media... you most certainly saw it last night when Lee pitched that ball to Helu's earhole. Bo no likey Lee in there. Wats is racist er something. He's gonna play Lee no matter what.

Now Watson not only has a neanderthal football mind, kills animals them shows them off on his feet... Mike Vick style... but now he's a racist. It's the only answer.

Posted by: bruNo on November 8, 2009 11:19AM CST
I am especially happy for Suh and Dillard--and Assante--those guys deserved this kind of win for their college careers @ NU.

They all played great last nite...

Posted by: rluben on November 8, 2009 11:21AM CST
Hey I'm just happy Wats listened to me and ran the ball out of the I, used some play action passes like I've drilled into his head and used the FB more effectively as a lead blocker.

Finally a straight ahead 22 iso with a FB leading the way...finally.

Wats needs alot more work on what play action he dials up and when for the most part but he's learning slowly.

Legate did a better job of blocking on lead run plays, took 2 backers out on one block, he wasn't as lost this week on who to block and how.

Our line seems to prefer to go straight at them altough it's kinda early in the take it to them phase and they aren't quite there yet.

Some of the pitch relationships were horrendous, way to close on that one missle pitch that was mishandled.

Finally a play action with a QB on a naked after the fake with a receiver coming across the formation underneath...was wondering when Wats would pull his head out and run that play I gave him 3 weeks ago.

My O might be kinda boring when it's being ran ineffectively, by newbies learning to walk
their way through it, but wait until they get it figured out next yr...going to be fun to watch it then.

Try a deep post off play action out of the I sometime Wats, ask T.O. about it, he'll get you squared away.

I can only do so much from the blog man.

Thanks for installing some of my plays though Wats, without them it woulda been a massacre again.

cr@p, I cant remember much from 1988, I was in Seattle and that's another story...

Remember I hated the Huskies though, back then...

You found a Corncat!!! DBP will be proud. I must say though, they don't look as mean, ferocious, and uncageable as he told me.

I envy all you Korn peeps that got to go to the game, PLZ, more details!!!

Posted by: TheNUorder on November 8, 2009 11:28AM CST
Step,

I think the Lee switch was a "minimize the risk" move. I think once the coaches saw we only needed two yards to score, whether Bo or Watson, they decided OU would expect Green to run for 4 downs to get it and decided to Let Lee change it up with a quick pass. don't think OU was looking for pass.

I think they felt after that score that the NU defense could continue to stop OU and even though Green had more upside, he also was higher risk of making mistakes because he was so amped up and inexperienced.

I believe they went with Lee becuase they felt the risk of QB mistakes was lessened since Green's pupils were bigger than the earholes in his helmet.

AS far as many bashing Watson, if the offense is really the walking wounded as was portrayed last night, Maybe the staff should be getting some credit for getting 11 offensive guys out there that can play period.

We saw what happened to Helu when he got injured and if the line is hurting, maybe playcalling and scheme aren't the real issues. Not saying I like our current scheme or execution, but maybe it is more of an injury issue than we know.

I do know one thing for sure tho, that was a great win for this team. NU 10 ponts off turnovers, OU ZERO points off turnovers.

Posted by: bruNo on November 8, 2009 11:30AM CST
shouldn't the corn be eating the cat? or doing something to the cat? I mean, the cat is KSUcks, right?

Posted by: rluben on November 8, 2009 11:31AM CST
And thanks for not running the sideline bublegum screen for a pick six or incompletion or backwards pass or into the dirt or out of bounds or for a loss of 12 or for hospitalization of a receiver....I could list more reasons not to have run it against OK, but you get the idea Wats.

Good job of not calling plays that would give Ok points off of...good job man.

Now that you've got that down let's start scheming plays that actually get us down the field besides the few I've installed for you that busted for decent runs.

Baby steps man.

That's a baby corncat, he grows up eventually into a tougher corncat, faster, meaner and taking bigger bites.

Poor little fella can't even naw himself off a decent piece of corn right now in his kitten stage, but as long as he keeps at it learning and growing he'll be fine.

It was a good time. I didn't go into the stadium, but enjoyed the walk up to the front with the herds. It was definitely a little more boisterous than it had been in previous weeks. Probably a little for the OU/NU stature, a little from the booze.

I sat in Champion's Club with a large crowd and the atmoesphere was pretty subdued when the offense got on the field. It was almost like pray we can get at least one first down, get a good punt and hold field position. It was great though.

Had a good time with PT, Blackshirt Retriever, Snow, Snow's bf, GBRtexas, Knapp, and Charger. Guido was there too, but I didn't get a chance to say anything to him. Hope I didn't forget anyone. Thanks for the fun LITR.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 8, 2009 11:36AM CST
Trashman))) I would hire rluben.

If he's busy... I would go for Turner Gill. If I was Bo... I would call Turner Gill and say "look... we need you to come back home."

What about Gerry Gdowski? If all else fails... we could get him for sure.

Or... throw the cash at somebody.

If you are determined to run WCO... how about ex-Eagles QB coach and current Miami OC.... Mark Whipple?

Speaking of the Eagles... how about passing game coordinator Doug Peterson?

How about Cardinals Oline coach... Russ Grimm? Tell me that wouldn't fit. I mean... if the game is won up front... and we need the big boys to dominate... who wouldn't want to play for Russ Grimm? He would also bring a dynamic run game package.

Basically... I would take anything besides the 2000's CU bang your head against a wall every week offense.

Green, really looked like a freshman in the first Quarter., The guy has skills, but still just a Freshman. He is still learning. On this fine Sunday Morning, here in Grand Island, Nebraska, it's all good. I am not going to point fingers, I am not going to critisize every little thing. It's a team game, and the Huskers walked off the field with the victory. They gave it everything they could, played hard all the time in every area. Lets give some credit to Oklahoma's defense. They are fast and outstanding. I am a happy camper. Beating Oklahoma is no small thing, especially after they took us to the woodshed last year. Our Defense is so much better, we have guys that just play hard all the time. The players were rightfully excited about the win, I hear the locker room was very noisy. Nitpick away fans, but I am proud how we won, physcial, gritty, tough, never giving in. Now as Bo said so well in his pressor, we need to enjoy the win for one day and forget it, because we have a game to play with Kansas on Saturday. Lose that game and win against the Sooners means nothing.

Go Huskers.

Posted by: rluben on November 8, 2009 11:59AM CST
Ok Bruno the corncat wasn't my idea I posted it for driveby's benefit.

He's been agreeing with me that our O needs to get tougher and learn to run the ball anytime they feel like it any way they feel like it, and if they learn to do that effectively they can then run any of their cute packages off of a dominant run package.

Got to establish the run first, almost always...preferably right at them unless a team is so hell bent on stopping it that you have clear advantages to take advantage of and then go about taking advantage of those advantages they are willing to give you.

Make a team stop the run, then it all opens up.

My play actions worked like I knew they would after he sorta established a bit of run game or at least the setup aspect of it.

Wats just needs to get more proficient on what play action to dial up and when, but he's improving in that aspect week by week.

I think Driveby kinda was referring to the Corncat O as a variation of the wildcat like Miami runs.

So I took the liberty to call the changes we are going through week to week towards what will eventually be our new look on O as the Corncat O.

It won't stick, but oh well.

Ok Bruno if this helps you out, I'll try to get your mind of K state in regards to the kitty n corn chewing avatar.

This is how I see it.

That kitten is a Husker doemstic farm kitty enjoying him some good NE corn like we all do now and then.

The corn represents Real Esate from goal line to gaol line and he's trying to tear off him a chunk of that turf n eat up some yards, only he's too young to take what he wants although he wants it badly.

He's an infant in this way of chewing up corn (yardage) but he's goign to grown up into a mean ferocious corn cat someday.

You have to open the mind a little to see the bigger picture.

The big 12 North is a field full of mice and tasty grains, Corncat will someday be hunting them down and tasting their blood on his lips.
Then he'll be moving onto bigger varmints in the big 12 South when he's all grown up.

Get it?

No K St inference here.

Although I knew someone would see it like that.

Posted by: rluben on November 8, 2009 12:17PM CST
But that's what I think of the kittens from K state too, they'll try to take some bites out of the corn and have about as much luck as this kitten is chewing with his baby teeth.

Either way it works, lol.

Posted by: rluben on November 8, 2009 12:20PM CST
Well crap it's the best corncat I could find for driveby Bruno, ease up on me man lmao.

I tried to find one wearing a corncob hat carrying a football under his arm with an N on his chest.

No luck there.

Posted by: bruNo on November 8, 2009 12:28PM CST
lubes,
k, now I sorta get it, 'corncat offense' as opposed to 'wildcat' or something. any ava with corn in it pretty much works, but I cant seem to get past that the cat is eating the corn...oh well.

So, I think that Wats has and does try to establish the run whenever possible, but it just isn't being established this year because of execution probs, i.e., the O line.

Now, maybe his whole schemology IS too complex for newbie college players to absorb fast, I buy that critique, and we haven't had an established QB and O line in his system, on the field for longer than a year and a half(Joey) and to me that's a huge thing.

But, Wat's thing looks like what many/most college programs are doing these days, generally speaking, so I'm not down on the guy. Plus Bo likes him and I'm all about BO, so thats what it is for me...

Posted by: bruNo on November 8, 2009 12:29PM CST
the cat looks like one of my cats, so its cool, maybe I'll try feeding the lil dude some corn...
