Perlman: Report untrue
Posted by: Steve Sipple on May 10, 2010 at 2:24PM CST

A radio station in Kansas City reported Monday that the Big Ten has extended offers to four schools to join the league -- including Nebraska.

Here's the link...

Asked via e-mail whether the report has any validity as it applies to Nebraska, UNL chancellor Harvey Perlman replied, "None whatsoever."

Expect there to be many more of these reports until the Big Ten announces something officially.

Just aas expected, pure hype

Posted by: Albino on May 10, 2010 2:38PM CST
Just what Harvey would say, until all the relevant schools have given their answer ...

GBR

Posted by: Dave on May 10, 2010 2:38PM CST
If it is true do you really think he'd say "Yes, there's validity to it"?

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on May 10, 2010 2:39PM CST
Im gunna go out on a limb here and say Nebraska hasn't been offered by the Big Ten... but rather they've been invited to join the SEC... (sarcasm)

Posted by: kilNtime on May 10, 2010 2:40PM CST
If it were true, Harvey wouldn't confirm it until the Big 10 announced it, nor should he.

Posted by: Ted Sheckler on May 10, 2010 2:41PM CST
I wouldn't expect anything until it's official from the Big 10

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on May 10, 2010 2:41PM CST
Dang... ESPN got wind of this...

Big Ten says, "No comment on the matter."

Usually that means there might be some truth to it. ESPN reports it different than the radio station though.

They say that the schools have been told they would be WELCOMED to join. So it doesn't sound like an official invitation has been sent out yet.

IF they have though... wonder when we have to RSVP by to get in on the party :)

Posted by: LosSantosKid on May 10, 2010 2:42PM CST
Harvey won't dare confirm this right NOW...LOL

Posted by: LosSantosKid on May 10, 2010 2:45PM CST
"Official" invites won't be sent out until the B10+ meets later this Spring...duh!

A good friend that WORKS in the B12 office sure seems to believe the story line. I wonder why? LOL

I believe we have been and are playing our cards VERY well during this next MAJOR phase of reallignment as we head towards a True national championship format including a REAL playoff...

Posted by: knapplc on May 10, 2010 2:46PM CST
There are a lot of negotiations that have to occur before any kind of move takes place. Those negotiations take months in the planning for something this big. The Big 10 is talking to relevant schools right now, including Nebraska, and likely have been talking to them for months.

When an announcement is made, most likely in July, it's not going to be because Jim Delaney just picked up the phone that morning and asked to speak to Harvey Perlman. They're talking right now, and we'll have to wait until the summer to see how those talks pan out.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on May 10, 2010 2:46PM CST
If anythings been done already I bet they wont announce it till after this coming season

Posted by: LosSantosKid on May 10, 2010 2:47PM CST
Who joins sCUm in the P10 expansion?? Do we care??? LOL

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on May 10, 2010 2:49PM CST
I wonder if my aunt and uncle who work for DONU have heard anything... I might give em a call later today lol

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on May 10, 2010 2:50PM CST
LosSantosKid:

Utah, maybe BYU (but they have so many rules cuz they are Mormon idk if the Pac-10 wants em), maybe TCU

Posted by: LosSantosKid on May 10, 2010 2:50PM CST
It will be announced in July so that the paperwork can be completed and submitted to the B12 Office (In Texass) before the deadline to count this year towards the transition period.

What will the Big Texass Conf. do to counter? Probably not much and certainly not enough.

And since the REST of the doomed Conference's members NEVER side with the Great Red of the North in matters, adios and Vaya Con Dios!

Posted by: hskrnut on May 10, 2010 2:53PM CST
pssssshhhhhh...

Posted by: LosSantosKid on May 10, 2010 2:54PM CST
Utah is a good bet for P10 expansion.

Will they stop with 12 (sCUm and Utah)?

Someone else, maybe 2 more from the almost defunct Big Texass Conf., would be my bet if they go to 14 schools.

Boise St.? Maybe. I wouldn't be surprised to see an up and comer from a Major Market in the West/NW to be included.

Again, who cares but it is intriguing to some degree...

Posted by: hskrnut on May 10, 2010 2:55PM CST
just someone lookin for some money for their radio station

yippie for speculation

Posted by: Bumarooskie on May 10, 2010 2:56PM CST
1620 the Zone in Omaha (also Sip's part time job) is having a lot of fun with this report.

Can't imagine a radio station in KC being the one to break this story ahead of everybody else, but even the National Enquirer has been getting them right lately.

Posted by: LosSantosKid on May 10, 2010 2:56PM CST
Just heard Fresno St. is on the P10's mind...do they field enough relevant sports programs?

FB is decent to very good at times. Baseball is excellent. Basketball?

Hawaii was mentioned as well.

Posted by: Stone on May 10, 2010 2:56PM CST
The guy at 810WHB is well connected to the Mizzou program and is pretty much right on with his stories about them in the past. I believe the story has a lot more truth that what everyone is saying.

What does everyone expect Harvey to say - "Sure we have been contacted, but we do not want to talk about it yet." I believe they are using this as leverage with the Big 12 and Texass. NU gets a bigger piece of the pie and more say so in the league or the Big 12 leftovers can pound sand and figure out what they should do next.

The story states that this could be effective for the 2011 football season. Now that puts a very small window to make a decision for all parties. I believe that NU will be leaving the Big 12 in the near future as will MU and CU.

Posted by: cornsker11 on May 10, 2010 2:58PM CST
Hopefully this article is true and we join the big 10. We at least then could maybe win a conference baseball series.

Posted by: LosSantosKid on May 10, 2010 2:59PM CST
Buma, it should be no surprise that a KC, *Missouri* radio station with several Mizzou grads on staff would be the ones to 'break' the story...although, maybe they just want to sink the whole deal, eh? LOL

Posted by: hskrnut on May 10, 2010 3:00PM CST
CU is as good as gone

I just dont wat to have to watch big 10 or however many, football it is the weakest major confrence as far as football is concerned and that dosent sound exciting to me

Posted by: LosSantosKid on May 10, 2010 3:03PM CST
cornsker11: hahaha!

It certainly WILL NOT hurt the baseball program IMO.

I believe it will also be good for the basketball program. Much more of a fit in many ways.

Women's sports will enjoy the New Kickbutt Conference, that's for sure...

Posted by: Bumarooskie on May 10, 2010 3:03PM CST
Now ESPN Radio is repeating the report. I love it!

Posted by: Stone on May 10, 2010 3:04PM CST
The kicker is the guy that reported it is a KSU homer, however connected to MU.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on May 10, 2010 3:04PM CST
LosSantosKid:

Boise St. will never get out of the WAC. They are lucky to be in the WAC period. Their other sports are no better than High School Varsity teams... and I could get a better education going to my high school for another 4 years than attending Boise St.

Boise gets good football players because their academics are horrible and they recruit the kids that just want to play football and want to put very very very very little effort in the class room. They also play in the WAC where they have maybe 3 bowl eligible teams once in a blue moon.

Posted by: hskrnut on May 10, 2010 3:04PM CST
wonder how many hits that web page has by now?

Posted by: Albino on May 10, 2010 3:06PM CST
hskmut: Remember, the Huskers & Sooners were in a league (B8) with six other weak teams, and they created a great rivalry and thrived. For decades!

GBR

Posted by: LosSantosKid on May 10, 2010 3:06PM CST
hskrnut,

The B10+ will become a much MUCH better FB conference with this expansion.

In fact, with the Big Texass Conference disintegrated, it could leap to the top of the heap and stay there for a run like the SEC has had...IMO

Posted by: Bumarooskie on May 10, 2010 3:08PM CST
I can sure see the Mizzou connection playing a part at the KC radio station.

If Mizzou gets an invite, I see them going. It sure seems like they would be a good fit with the Big 10 and the money would be tough to walk away from.

Going to be interesting to see how it all unfolds.

Posted by: hskrnut on May 10, 2010 3:09PM CST
LSK

that is what the big ?? is trying to do they just might anger former big 10 teams

Posted by: LosSantosKid on May 10, 2010 3:09PM CST
Hsb2, I agree. The Boise State fad will pass.

Besides, there's a new red turf going in up at Eastern Washington which means they will replace Boise St. over time as the new novelty.

LOL

Posted by: crindal on May 10, 2010 3:10PM CST
T.O. wants out of the Big 12 .Period.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on May 10, 2010 3:11PM CST
hskmut:

Actually I would say the confrences by football strength go as follows:

1. SEC*
2. Big 12*
3. Big Ten*
4. ACC*
5. Pac-10*
6. Big East*
7. Mountain West
8. WAC
9. Confrence USA
10. Independents
11. MAC
12. Sun Belt

* = BCS confrence

Posted by: hskrnut on May 10, 2010 3:12PM CST
seems this radio station had alot of "sources close to the negociations" sounds like a bunch of malarkey to me but is guess you never know

I just think that the confrences would do a better job of keeping that kind of information under wraps

Posted by: LosSantosKid on May 10, 2010 3:13PM CST
Anyone in the current B10+ that isn't excited about DONU joining up is either irrelevant already or blind to all the possibilities. IMO

I'd love to add trips to Lincoln to their menu not to mention ALL of the excitement DONU brings to the table across the board.

Whether the Texass schools will admit it or not, joining up with DONU and OU was a major step UP for their programs.

Posted by: hskrnut on May 10, 2010 3:16PM CST
ACC has the big 10 beat, and the PAC-10 has USC, Oregon, UCLA, and Oregon state bring them in a tie for 4th

it seems that the big 10 is better because ESPN and others overrate Ohio State, Michigan, and others every year ESPN had Ohio State as the #4 or so in their way to early preseason ranking crazy

Posted by: HuskerzFL on May 10, 2010 3:17PM CST
I hope, for the sake of the program, NU is being proactive and isn't setting around waiting to see what Texass is going to do.

Posted by: hskrnut on May 10, 2010 3:18PM CST
LSK

I was speaking of academics of course they would love to have more football power but they may not like some of the academic sides of things

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on May 10, 2010 3:19PM CST
Tom never wanted to add the Texas schools... but he was over ruled by the 7 other schools.

Think about it... at that time:

Mizzou- Was ok
KSU- was the #2 team in the confrence
CU- Was the #3 team in the confrece
OSU- Was still a joke
ISU- was a roller coaster program
KU- Didn't know what a football was
OU- was a middle of the pack team trying to find their way back.
Neb- was the best program in the land of CFB

Those other 7 schools all had reason to add the Texas Schools. OU and OSU saw a way to play easier competition. UT was a decent program at the time and aTm was the only other school that would give both schools somewhat a challenge.

The other "North" schools wanted to limit Nebraska in any way possible because there was no way they could compete.

So you have 7-1 there.

Those schools were looking for fast ways to get better without thinking of the consequences. UT played their cards right back then by catering to these desires of the other Big 8 schools and sucked up all the power...

Well Karma's a B aint it UT!

Posted by: LosSantosKid on May 10, 2010 3:36PM CST
I think the Texass Sports Network might have been the last straw. IDK for sure...

As for the B10+ being concerned about the level of educational opportunity at DONU compared to, even say, Iowa or MN - then their reasons for concern over our academics are less than meaningless.

Posted by: Drinkin' Wit' Terrell Farley on May 10, 2010 4:19PM CST
there was a good article about the Pac-10 whereas the schools have to be unanimous in voting for expansion and talked about turning down Texas in the '90's

they also made a great point about the academic standing of Stanford making it tough for other schools and the left leaning Cal-Berkeley wouldn't allow BYU in the league as the Mormon church funneled tons of money into the state to defeat the California bill recognizing gay marriage. I think you would see BYU and their conservative ways fit much better in the Big 12.

Posted by: pacer on May 10, 2010 4:52PM CST
I'd love to see Bevo and the SWC in our rear view mirror; Iowa as our "rival" instead of CU; anual 4-team playoffs that may well include the Huskers, tOSU, PSU and Michigan as often as not.

GBR!!

Posted by: Mountainman@ on May 10, 2010 6:54PM CST
What would happen if the NCAA passed a rule that limited the size of football conferences to 12 schools? Maybe the would put the brakes on all this conference cannibalism nonsense.

Posted by: Dallas Husker on May 10, 2010 7:22PM CST
I really hope NU jumps on this if they are offered. Imagine a season with these types of matchups:

NU vs Wisconsin.
NU vs Iowa
NU vs Ohio State
NU vs Michigan
NU vs Notre Dame
NU vs Penn state.

I mean, think how many more people would tune in to those games than NU vs KU, ISU, sCUm, K-State. As for UT, I hope this hurts the hell out of their program. They won't admit it, but I don't think they want Nebraska leaving the big12. My personal belief is that NU has been offered but Perlman's not talking about it because it hasn't been made official yet. I'm sure there are legal issues Perlman is trying to steer from by not talking. Smart on his part.

Posted by: zaruba on May 11, 2010 8:18AM CST
WE need to be in the B10, now. It is only a matter of time until Texas goes to the SEC or Pac 10.. . we really need to learn to be pro-active instead of reactive to Texas. Since this B12 was formed, Texas has drug the other 11 teams around by their ears. . . .

It is time to leave the B12. . .

Posted by: DebTu on May 11, 2010 10:56AM CST
Well, we should be careful what we wish for. However, some great volleyball with regular trips to and from Minn and Penn St . . . and in baseball we'd be competing with teams that all have lousy spring weather. Basketball MIGHT be a little easier for men and women. Gymnastics, too . . .
