Pelini: Suh playing at high level
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on September 14, 2009 at 12:12PM CST
Obviously, a lot of pressure on Ndamukong Suh this season. Bo Pelini said on Monday's teleconference call that the senior nose tackle is playing "at a pretty high level."

Pelini was asked if he's talked to Suh about ways he can make an impact while getting more attention from other teams.

"No, we just totally want him to just play within the scheme of the defense," Pelini said. "He'll make his impact because he's a helluva player, but if you start trying to offset what teams are doing, then the whole scheme will break down."

Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said Monday Nebraska is a much improved team this year. What's Pelini think about that? "I think we're a little bit better. I think we still have a ways to go. We'll find out this week. We're going in there, a heckuva test. A very talented, tremendously coached football team. ... I think we're a bit improved but we'll find out in a setting like this."

Virginia Tech had two freshmen running backs -- Ryan Williams and David Wilson -- both rushed for more than 160 yards in a 52-10 win over Marshall on Saturday.

Pelini said "they're really good football players. ... We'll have our hands full, we know that."

Polite coach speak, what do you expect? But I think Beamer is a class act and the Huskers will live up to his compliment. I also think the NU coaching staff will take off the leashes for this game.
GBR!

one would also think that we have been doing some work for this game since summer condition started. I know I know one game at a time. But it makes one wounder..............

Posted by: charger on September 14, 2009 12:22PM CST
Just to follow up on that. If i remember correctly Scott Frost made a comment about they had done some work early for their trip to Washington. The last time we bet a top 20 team 1997

Charger,
You know they have. I think Bo blames himself for the loss because of his outburst that piled on additional penalty yards. If not for those two calls, who knows?

VT and NU have some similarities. Beemer has been there for a long time. They seem to be content with running a class program with a class guy. Kind of a different attidude in this day and age. We are back to that philosiphy it would seem. Maybe no losers here. Just 1 team scoring more points than the other.

Posted by: charger on September 14, 2009 12:26PM CST
You know Wyhuskerfan, A person has to believe these coaches here when they talk about their players in what they can & can't do. I got a chance to talk to a couple players before the season and I told them Just believe what your coaches teach ya and you guys will be fine.

Beamer is old school and earned his stripes the hard way. Not like some of the coaches you see roaming the sidelines. Agree a hard played contest will produce no losers. Anyone know what conference the officials will be from?

Charger, actually we beat #1 Oklahoma in Lincoln. NU was #2 at the time. That was the pass to Crouch game. I can't remember the kid who threw it, his GF was the one that tutored Tommy Lee on the reality show. On the road, that may be a different story, if so, my bad

Mike Stuntz to Eric Crouch, if I remember correctly.

you are right about that. i didn't get it right. 1997 was the last time we beat a top 20 ranked team on the road. my bad

The running game of VT worries a bit...but it IS the early test. 12 years of not beating a top team at their house has to end. This should be the team to do it!

It's nice to hear the coach give some praise to Suh.

Beemer reminds me alot of Weeb Eubank

Mike Stuntz, I've been trying to remember that guy's name for years. That was one sweet pass and one sweet play, that play and the run against Methzoo that got him the Heisman. Back to BolisneyWorld. I think that we keep them out of the end zone. I also think that we can contain Tyrod Taylor. This may be the QB that gets broken completely in half. We don't really have to worry about the fast release, b/c we don't really know where the ball's going w/ TT. He's probably less accurate than I would be passing under the same pressure. I can just see Martin, Hagg, Suh, Compton, Fisher, someone just annihilating TT as he tries to come around the end and breaks contain. What a beautiful sight that would be, and I still want to hear it all the way in NE Arkansas. Beemer is a class act as a coach, he never hardly has that good of an offense, but wins the old fashioned way; ball control, good defense, and good special teams. He always manages to win the ACC title and go to a BCS Bowl. They also seem to loose a game or two a year that they shouldn't. This seems to be that game, coming off a demolishing win and 440 yds on the ground. TT threw what, one int against Marshall, a bad Marshall team at that, we shoud have 3-4 ints against this guy. Hence my final score, NU 35, VaTech 21. This O is too balanced and will make VaTech's Defense pay if they are not balanced against us, just as Bama did. Again, NU limit TO's, Stay home on Taylor, contain the RB's. I see a breakout by our D in a big stage. These guys are insatiable in will to improve and knowledge of the game. Like I said, Bo will find some reason to complain about our game execution, and this week, he unleashes the hounds. Bo doesn't need to critique this team, they're critiquing themselves. They see the sky as the limit and they know if they keep this up and improve, then BCS NCG here we come, then next year, we will be the favorites, open the schedule ranked either 1 or 2, and do it all over again, then Step's 4 & 5*'s start knocking down the door to come to NU

VT really has a tough run defense. Huskers must get their running game in gear if they want win. We will see if that big OL can play smashmouth against a top tier defense. Husker's WR's should be able to get some mismatches, and Lee has the arm to deliver, if OL can protect. Where is Bell?

If Huskers can handle VT, then the rest of the schedule is tough but doable. At the start of the season, I thought the Huskers had a reasonably good chance against everyone except the Okie's. Now after BYU proved the Sooners could be had, the door is open at least a crack for the Huskers. But VT is the first big hurdle.

Baylor and TTech look tougher than expected, while K-State and Colorado look much weaker. KU and Mizzou about as expected. So, the opportunity is there even if Bo won't say anything about it.

For AR:

So how many four and five star guys does BYU have? Boise State has none, and did you see the job they did on Oregon's great recruits? BSU does have a couple three star guys, but they did not even get into the game.

I'm sure Houston was really impressed with all those Okie State's stars. Hawkins has some four and five star guys at Colorado, and I'm sure that scared the pants off of Toledo and Colorado State.

The way to defeat VT defense it to run right at it. With their speed getting the corner will be real hard.

Posted by: gtsum2 on September 14, 2009 5:43PM CST
the o line must be physical and run directly at the tech d...we do not have the talent (speed) to try and run wide on them, as tech has a lot of speed on that side of the ball. IMO, the O line will determine if we win this game..if they can play their most physical game (in years actually), NU will win, as the offense is very balanced and very dynamic. If O line cannot get the run game going, it will be tough dropping back passing 40 times a game and beating tech. I do think our D line against their O line will be interesting as well...we will see how good crick is and how much our young LB's have grown up this short season...I am really looking forward to this game, as it is the first legitimate test of a game that the Huskers CAN actually win (as opposed to the past USC games, etc). I cant wait til Saturday!

Mountainman,

All I was saying is that the talent level and play level will increase. I know, the recruiting sites are a bunch of crap, they just measure potential based on a computer formula. I would rather have the talent level that Pelini & CO have and develop them. That's instead of the PRIMADONNA SNOTS THAT THINK THEY ARE GOD'S GIFT TO FOOTBALL AND BOUNCE TO THE NFL AFTER PLAYING ONE SEASON!!!!! I hate the recruiting process. The only reason I said that is that Step's been talking recruiting for the last two years that I've been on this site about how NU needs to get the 4&5* recruits to come to NU. That's fine and dandy, but I personally would much rather have a talented guy that is willing to learn and will listen to the coaches than some snot like VaTech's RB that said he don't need no coaches to tell them how to run a football, or the people like Weis and U Meyer talks about spending three years convincing a player they are not God's gift to football so they will then be able to learn. I was saying that the talent level will increase, and we won't have to be yacking about recruiting and complaining about it in March afte Nat'l Signing Day
