Pelini: Suh acted responsibly
Posted by: Steve Sipple on November 3, 2009 at 12:46PM CST

Bo Pelini said Tuesday he's "really proud" of the way Ndamukong Suh handled matters in the wake of his car accident early Sunday morning.

"He called me right away," Pelini said. "He told me exactly what the situation was, where he was, what happened. It was an accident. I thought he handled it the right way, very responsibly. He's fully prepared to take care of the damages and all of that."

Lincoln police cited the Nebraska senior DT on suspicion of negligent driving. Suh told police he swerved to avoid hitting a cat or dog in the road, according to a police accident report. His 2003 Land Rover struck three vehicles parked along U Street in between 30th and 31st streets at about 2:20 a.m.

According to the accident report, a preliminary Breathalyzer measured the 22-year-old Suh’s blood-alcohol content at 0.035 percent. The legal limit for drivers in Nebraska is 0.08 percent.

Pelini said Sunday the accident won't affect Suh's playing status.

In March of 2008, Pelini said his team had a zero-tolerance policy regarding alcohol use.

"The zero tolerance is obviously for drunkenness, that type of thing," Pelini said Tuesday. "He was far from drunk. I know exactly where he was and what he did that night. This doesn't really fall into that category. I deal with those situations kind of on a case-by-case basis. If somebody's drunk and gets into trouble, they're going to have an issue. That wasn't the case here."

However, Pelini said, Suh will be disciplined internally because he was ticketed.

"What I told him was, I understand why he was up that late, but that's probably the thing I was most disappointed in," the coach said. "Any time you're up that hour of the night -- I understand why he was -- you leave yourself at that hour for things to happen."

Pelini said Suh, in the hours before the accident, was at someone's residence, had dinner and fell asleep. "He got up and was going to his house downtown," the coach said.

Pelini began his media session by immediately addressing the Suh situation, without being asked, "because I want him to be able to concentrate on football."

"I told him not to field any questions about it," the coach said.

Suh is the man, don't care what Step says!

"steprazor"

the ultimate double negative. Of course "nishbig" is a close second

Posted by: GBR in Texas on November 3, 2009 12:54PM CST
Was there any doubt that Suh would do anything other than act responsibly? Of course there are those who will try to make something out of it.

Posted by: TomOs on November 3, 2009 12:57PM CST
I heard once that Suh climbed the State Capital building..

Posted by: drivebyposter on November 3, 2009 1:00PM CST
Acutally it was twice.

.035 huh? Looks like the cop was a "husker" fan. Good to see things like the old days with the Lincoln Police.

I hear what you are saying about Suh. My sister is upset with the newspaper for having his picture and article on the front page yesterday.

Posted by: TomOs on November 3, 2009 1:06PM CST
Well it wasnt actually like a Howard Cossell..

Posted by: drivebyposter on November 3, 2009 1:07PM CST
trash, whas up.

Well now that is a stickler. Schwooners only favored by 6, discount homefield of 3, which says it's only 3.......

Corn down by 10. But I hope it is the reverse. Just have never had a smile for the chokos

If Suh is a 3 string fullback, he is sitting for a game or off the team. I don’t have a problem the way Bo is handling it. Without Suh we have no chance of beating OU. Double standards are what makes the world go round.

Posted by: HuskerOLY on November 3, 2009 1:12PM CST
I'm glad he won't be punished on the field. We need him to punish Jones and the rest of the OU offense on saturday.

I wonder what call was harder, the call to Pelini or the call to his mom.

Don't forget to go write in Suh for Heisman. He used to get 1000 votes a day. It's closer to 1000 votes a week lately. Tebow is catching him. We need to stop that.

Posted by: Father of future Husker on November 3, 2009 1:23PM CST
I think the center and guard for Baylor who were trying to take Suh's knees out on several plays (my favorite was the one 2 plays after Suh got the personal foul for the "late hit" before the whistle on the QB) pissed Suh off.

SUH ANGRY!

SUH SMASH CARS!

Sipple..did you ask Bo who's house Suh was at? was she good looking? LOL

To every man and woman who lived like a perfect saint during their college years, MAY I SEE A SHOW OF HANDS. Mine's surely not being held up too high.

Busiekcreek,
Gone wild, now thats hot.

Posted by: 4BigRed on November 3, 2009 1:40PM CST
Coughunter,
Are you implying that the Lincoln police let Suh get away with a DUI charge or are you just mathematically challenged and don't realize that .035 is less than half the legal limit in Nebraska?

Posted by: Doc_Husker on November 3, 2009 1:40PM CST
Well said Busie. My hand isn't raised either!! For a 22 year old college to have a few beers and celebrate a win is fine in my book. Certainly had some Halloween parties to attend.

Glad to see Suh acting responsibly.

Posted by: taco on November 3, 2009 1:41PM CST
joke going around the internet that on the same night Suh hit car..Bo's house was egged. lincoln police believe a NU QB had something to do with it as only 3 of the 12 eggs hit his house. several more were dropped about 6 yards from Bo's house, police think a reciever was also in on it. where do these jokes start anyway? i think i know and we will kick their arse.

Posted by: huskerdog/colo. on November 3, 2009 1:46PM CST
Yea the "DOG" had his moments - after our frat formal, spent the night in jail. Drinking related. Just wonder with the amount of damage done - how fast was he going, skid marks etc. Something smells a little "fishy"! But obviously, with all the "good" players we've lost, glad Suh slipped under the radar! PS - That "boy" named Suh needs to increase his alcohol tolerance!! LOL

After 2 or 3 beers or drinks = .035 & his size factored in, who knows, he may have been a little buzzed!!! God knows other coaches have let players get by with worse!

Why thank you PT. I think.

Can I stay at your place until I wake up to drive home?

Posted by: Outside The Box on November 3, 2009 2:23PM CST
Dog - two things to consider:

1) Lee B has gone out of his way for years to prove that he's not an NU homer. I'm sure most of the room can tell you who he had atop his AP ballot in '97.
2) Based soley on conference record, we're no better than 6th in the league, but based upon performance, 9th isn't a big slap.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on November 3, 2009 2:27PM CST
PT, I sent you a message about a couple things. I've told them here that whatever I would need to do on Saturday can wait until next week 'cause I'm going to Lincoln for the Nebraska/OU game. They can either like it, or not. Won't make any difference if I'm there or not. It might be crazy to drive 650 miles, watch a game and drive 650 miles back, but I've never been accused of being very intelligent, so why not.

Posted by: Trashman on November 3, 2009 2:28PM CST
PT
Thanks, I'll wait for my 2nd invite. Who do we have as confirmed RSVP's from here?

Just Bring her out to Flatirons on Friday am. You can take me back with you\ in the pm. She can stay. I will cover here two nights at the Omni. And we can whip back on Sunday.

Course you have to cover the shopping.

I just wish I could have made it down to the tailgate. But, this year it was not to be. Hopefully they will do this again next year and of course no untimely flu bugs, I can make it down.

With a .035 BAC, that's about one beer, or one glass of wine. Not much. I am against drinking and driving, but this is not that big a deal for me. Suh has a great track record, and I am sure he will take care of business. And he obviously called the police besides Bo, so he did not try to avoid the consequences.

Go Big Red.

Tough to say, but I was always taught that if it came down to a dog or cat, (you know, NOT a moose-sized road kill) and swerving dangerously into another lane or other cars, that the critter would be the one to lose.

Smacking into at least 3 other parked cars? Must have been a leftover Holloween black cat to have caused the big man to be so frightened. Er, uh, I mean "thoughtful".

Wonder if the other auto owners thought he handled it the right way. Call the adjuster, Ma!!!

Posted by: GeneSc2 on November 3, 2009 7:25PM CST
In many states, blowing .035 and having an accident would get you a DUI (Driving Under the Influence) not to be confused with a DWI (Driving While Intoxicated), interesting.

Posted by: huskerdog/colo. on November 3, 2009 8:48PM CST
The "DOG" would drive the 500 miles to see Husker games when we still had season tickets in the west stadium. Sometimes I would take Am Track. Left Denver about 9pm, arrived Lincoln around 6am. A drunken BLAST! With the damage done - how fast was he going? Skid marks
