Pelini sees more consistency this fall
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on August 16, 2010 at 2:05PM CST
The Huskers are finished with one of two practices this Monday.

Honestly, there was nothing too eventful to report on, though I never cease to be amazed with how big Alex Henery has become in this state.

He did interviews after practice and at one point I counted 12 media members around him. Try finding another place -- college or NFL -- where a kicker could draw such a crowd.

It says something about Henery. It also says something about Husker football is covered and consumed in this state. From head to toe -- literally.

Anyway, about the practice....

"It was good. We had good tempo. I thought it was a really good practice," Husker coach Bo Pelini said. "We got a lot done this morning."

No scrimmages today, but Pelini noticed some fresh legs in his team after taking Sunday off.

"I'm sure they're not game-ready," Pelini said. "They're still a little leg-weary I'm sure, but you couldn't have seen it out there. They moved around pretty good out there today."

One thing quite evident to reporters is how positive Pelini has been in talking about his team's practices.

Not near as many "we have a long ways to go" from Pelini this fall.

"I think our consistency's better," Pelini said. "Our kids understand how to approach the day. I don't see as many ups and downs. I think our guys are a little bit more mentally tough than we have been in the past consistently. But trust me when I tell you there's still a lot to fix. We're not game-ready by any means."

But Pelini added that his team has come a long ways. "I don't see our guys feeling for themselves this time if they get a little bit leg-weary. I mean, that happens some. It's human nature. But you don't see it as often and it's not as hard to address. You see our guys come out ready to compete."

CONSISTENCY

hey nice pic of BO in an old man stance.....lol My grandpa used to stand like that when discussing the weather...

Posted by: Ray in Bellevue on August 16, 2010 2:15PM CST
So far, so good.

Posted by: drivebyposter on August 16, 2010 2:16PM CST
IB,

Good one. I know that stance.

Ray,

Is that coach speak?

Nice.

Posted by: Outside The Box on August 16, 2010 2:17PM CST
It doesn't matter if you're discussing football teams or grandma's gravy: good consistency is the key.

Posted by: Inbread on August 16, 2010 2:27PM CST
BTW, when its all said and done, Henery will be the finest kicker to ever grace the turf at memorial stadium. I have Kris Brown as #2. Anyone disagree?

Posted by: Outside The Box on August 16, 2010 2:29PM CST
Speaking of Alex Henery: I picked up a schedule card with his picture on it. He is in a post-kick celebratory flex. It cracked me up to see his little kicker muscles ripping.

As good as he is, I still maintain his jersey number is his weight without pads.

Posted by: Inbread on August 16, 2010 2:30PM CST
OTB, go watch the replacements. Henery is just WIRY......;)

Posted by: Outside The Box on August 16, 2010 2:38PM CST
Inbread - it should be no contest. With an "average" season, Alex should be the career leader in Points, FGs made, FG %, and PAT %.

If he has another 4 FG game, he would set an NCAA record for most 4 FG games (7).

As for the Kicker Top 5, I'd go like this:

1. Henery
2. K. Brown
3. J. Brown
4. Dale Klein
5. Gregg Barrios

Posted by: Blackshirtbacker on August 16, 2010 2:58PM CST
It was good to read the comments from Coach Pelini regarding practice. What a change from the previous coaching staff and what they did in practice. Attitude is everything.

Give up 76 points in a game. Defense ranked 112th in the nation. Next year the defense is ranked in the 40's. Same players, but different attitude.

This coaching staff is teaching a lot more than just football to these young men.

I don't know that I would totally disagree but I might have to make it 1 and 1A. If Brown was setting up to make that kick against the buffs I would have been more confident that he could make it than I was wil Alex.
Just glad we can say we had them both!

dbp.

Yea, backseat drivers speak. Bo is at the wheel and Watson is hanging on in the passenger seat. I hope he has his seat belt on.

Power.

Do you think that Bo has also built the offensive plan in this well oiled machine? I don't think so from his comments about how he is relying on Watson.

Not alot being said about Anthony Blue.

Does anyone have insights?

I'm with U. mabe the secret wepon. Could still be struggling with the mental side. He'll play.

Posted by: CBHusker on August 16, 2010 3:31PM CST
Last I heard about Blue was a World-Herald article last week saying he was back up to speed. Too bad for him he has so much competition. But good for the team. Hope he can work his way back up, he's earned it.

Posted by: fleaflicker on August 16, 2010 3:31PM CST
Ray........I remember Wats saying that it was hard not to air it out last year after the Husker's offensive scheme was thrown out. IMO the revamping came from the front office.....Coach P with TO advising. The main thing that I look forward to this season is how serious the Huskers are in re-establishing the run with power and hopefully being able to run a more balanced offense.

Ideally a 1:1 ratio of run/pass.

I posted some stats a while back Got them from husker.com. We ran the ball more than we threw it last year. Also Lee was the 2nd leading ground gainer.

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on August 16, 2010 4:00PM CST
Exiled in VT was not at practice.

Posted by: RocketHusker on August 16, 2010 4:00PM CST
Don't be fooled, I know Alex, he looks wiry next to the other players, but he is an athlete (Trash he is a pretty good golfer). When that fourth down came up against the puffs, my friend and I were in the south endzone next to the students. I looked over at my friend and at the same time we said "Alex." We knew he could kick that far, just needed Bo to pull the trigger. Something that HWSNBM would never do, trust a kicker.

Power-
Watts record while coaching there was definitely better than Hawkins. Depends on who else would get a look. A good coach should be able to win in that scenery.

It is clear you are clueless as far as the Buffs are concerned. Watson will never get an offer from Colorado.

Posted by: Outside The Box on August 16, 2010 4:42PM CST
Rocket - In fairness, other than 2007 (Henery's freshman year) Callahan wasn't exactly blessed with kickers that you would count on with the game on the line.

Remember the 2006 Cotton Bowl where Cally went for it on 4th & long because he knew Congdon couldn't hit a 46 yarder with a 50 mph tail wind?

To Billy C's credit, the following August two of the strongest legs in Husker history (Alex and Adi) were in camp.

Posted by: PT Husker on August 16, 2010 4:43PM CST
AP OC of the year: Shawn Watson.

"After a dismal 2009 season stastically, Watsons 2010 Huskers led the big 12 in offensive production while winning the last Big 12 championship they will play for. Coupled with an outstanding defense, the Huskers dominated time of possession over their opponents. Showing outstanding balance, they led the league in rushing and were 3rd in passing showcasing a huge turnaround by Zac lee, the beleagured QB from the 2009 season.

Said AD Tom Osborne, Shawn Watson possesses a fine offensive mind. We have worked closely together and I am proud to have him as coach".

then what will we say???

Posted by: Outside The Box on August 16, 2010 4:44PM CST
Drive -

IF our good friend Hawk is fired at the end of the year, who are some candidates who would receive an interview/offer?

Posted by: PT Husker on August 16, 2010 4:53PM CST
Power, If he is all those things, Why should he leave? If he is not, or is as bad as some here think, why would they hire him?

Posted by: RocketHusker on August 16, 2010 5:12PM CST
OTB - I do realize that, but wasn't Congdon HWSNBM's first kicking recruit. And in all fairness, he wouldn't give Alex the time of day his freshman year because Congdon was still on scholly and could be demoted. Trust me Henery was easily kicking 50's his freshman year, and no offense to Congdon but anything over 40 was questionable at best.

However, you are right. bc had nothing in the kicking department.

Great post. Has it happened? No. Could it happen? Sure. If Bo and TO aren't pushing Wats out the door, there must be something that the man can do as a coach. Too many things happened last year for the offense to mesh. Michael Jordan knows a little something about a year that didn't go the way he planned when he got cut from the team.

Okay somebody tell me about the Tight End tranfer from West Point (Army)

Posted by: All "N" on August 16, 2010 6:28PM CST
A big, physical team with the ability to run when it wants to run. Bo isn't going to settle for mediocrity when he has his pieces in place. Year three means more of his players in the fold to do the things he envisions. He has been doing this well with what he was given--look at the upside.

Posted by: All "N" on August 16, 2010 6:30PM CST
It was a military transfer request so that he could play with "the General".

IH, trying to keep the peasce in your absence. Not doing so well.

Bo is happy, we should be also.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on August 16, 2010 8:06PM CST
Well, some just have to complain about something, with Watson being the easy target. They need to wait to see how the season unfolds. Some simply don't like Wats, simply because he coached for Colorado. But his offense their pretty much took the Huskers to school.

I for one am feeling good about the upcoming season, the players seem to be working hard, and competing. I think our offense is going to do some real good things.

Go Huskers.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on August 16, 2010 8:09PM CST
Bo seems to be in a pretty good frame of mind. This is truly now his team, with 75% of the players now belonging to him. Pt - you are right, if he is feeling good we should too.

Actually from what I was able to read he is from Washington but played in the army game.

Posted by: BleedingRed on August 16, 2010 8:39PM CST
There should be blog rule that players are not talked about until they have seen the field. :)

It's kind of weird seeing Bo in a good mood, isn't it?

I choose to think that as a perfectionist he knew he had things that needed to take hold and become part of the new culture. Until this year he was no pleased with how that was going. Now, everyone knows what is expected and what needs to be done on a daily basis to be successful...so, Bo is in a good mood because he know that he has created a self fulfilling prophecy of quality.

As long as no one messes that up or tries to go backwards I suspect that Bo will be happy to spend his time on some of the other things that he wants his teams to accomplish.

Posted by: big red 1 on August 16, 2010 8:51PM CST
Sounds like this week end went well. No one in trouble and that is a good thing.

Posted by: cstxfn on August 16, 2010 8:51PM CST
I read an article from the Washington media that said Middleton was dismissed for failing a drug test back in July. He was a started last year, but lost the #1 in spring ball. They said he was a junior. Hope he works out okay, he was a prize recruit.

Posted by: big red 1 on August 16, 2010 8:55PM CST
cstxfn: How much truth is there to that ? Sounds very weird that BO would be looking at him with that kind of baggage.

Posted by: drivebyposter on August 16, 2010 8:56PM CST
Power,

sorry, but he would not even be a candidate.

OTB, based on the last hire, they will take their time. No one pops out like Hawk did 5 years ago.

Not Bo or Husker material. Call me a bit skeptical here.

No, notice my comment was in the past tense. I think, in year three we have assembled a capable group. The Red shirt program Bo has utilized to the max has allowed the time to learn the nuances of the technique required.

At least it would appear so with the young players we are seeing in the mix.

It is working.
