Pelini: Nothing decided on starting QB
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on August 30, 2010 at 11:58AM CST
Husker head coach Bo Pelini said Saturday that his staff had a plan for how they'd use their quarterbacks in the opener.

Some people wondered if that meant Pelini knew who was starting at QB but just didn't want to make a public announcement about it.

But according to Pelini's comment on Monday during the Big 12 coaches' teleconference, it's not a done deal yet who will start against Western Kentucky.

"I have an idea who it's going to be but nothing's decided yet," Pelini said. "It's just kind of our approach is a day-in, day-out competition. When the time's right, then that's when I'll address that."

Pelini said the uncertainty at the position hasn't hurt the team's preparation in any way.

"That's kind of how we handle it across the board in our program," he said. "Our guys focus on practice and how we prepare and all those sorts of things. Our guys are used to it. We really approach it that way at every position."

It will be Lee.

Posted by: MileHiHusker on August 30, 2010 12:06PM CST
Unless it is someone else. Perhaps Martinez or Green. Not likely however. They will all see significant time though.

Posted by: Brian Christopherson on August 30, 2010 12:07PM CST
I don't know MileHiHusker. I'm starting to think it will be Martinez. But we'll know soon enough. And I think what matters most is who comes out of the Washington game as the starter.

Posted by: Blue Sky on August 30, 2010 12:07PM CST
Why even bother asking him?

Posted by: Stone on August 30, 2010 12:09PM CST
It could be up to 10 different guys, as Bo said. Since NU does not even have 10 QBs, that will be interesting. I am sure we will know by 6pm on Saturday who the starter is.

Posted by: Hypno Potomus on August 30, 2010 12:10PM CST
It does not matter to me who starts as long as they win.

I'm getting a kick out of how Bo is stringing along the media.

Posted by: MileHiHusker on August 30, 2010 12:10PM CST
BC,
I saw your comment on that last week. I thought it interesting and since you have better insight and access I'll tell my inner circle husker fans out here what my (your) perdiction is. Martinez is starting!! If not you owe me 5 bucks.

Posted by: Blackshirtsdef on August 30, 2010 12:11PM CST
Everybody already knows the Huskers are shifty at the QB posish......what I want to know is who is starting at RB and if not Helu, why?

How bout, who are the Captains of the team?

I'm not worried about the QB, he's not the play caller. I'm more conserned with Leadership and the running game!

good point blue sky cause his answer will be blue sky

Posted by: bigcajunhusker on August 30, 2010 12:14PM CST
I'm thinking that they have told all three that each will receive some significant reps. But, I think that Martinez takes the field first.

Posted by: Brian Christopherson on August 30, 2010 12:14PM CST
I wouldn't bet my Toyota Corolla that Martinez is starting, but that is my prediction, yes.

Posted by: Gofor2 on August 30, 2010 12:16PM CST
I'm with you Brian
Picture of Martinez on the Chicago Trib sports site yesterday. Coincidence? I think not.

I'm just worried about how the Trashes and Drives will react when TMArt takes the first Snap. I hope they'll be OK. :)

Posted by: Brian Christopherson on August 30, 2010 12:16PM CST
I'd be surprised if we don't see two QBs in the first half, and the third one by some point in the third quarter. Sort of a preseason NFL game kind of feel.

Posted by: Blackshirtsdef on August 30, 2010 12:17PM CST
Question for Mr. Sipple.

I really liked your pre-season prediction post. Sounds pretty solid, other than the Colorado thing and Les Miles.

How do you figure Les Miles is gonna get fired? He's the next best thing for that program other than Saban, and thats not happening. I really think they are flying under the radar and are about to make people remember why they are so tough in the SEC Championship. But thats my prediction.

Along with, Hawkins get'n fired and the Buffs start "a new" in the PAC 10.

When does the prediction thread about the score come out? Maybe we should get 3 predictions depending on which QB Starts.

Also...K-State finishes Second in the North!

Posted by: Gofor2 on August 30, 2010 12:19PM CST
Brian,
I wonder if posters are starting to think we're the same guy who has two screen names since we pretty much agree on everything?

When I win all those dinners for my prediction we'll split 'em.

Posted by: charger on August 30, 2010 12:22PM CST
If Martinez is named the starter, are the fans prepaired for about 3 regular season losses?

Posted by: bigcajunhusker on August 30, 2010 12:22PM CST
I actually have a rationale as to why Martinez gets the start. Last year, we started with Lee, and he went until he fizzled a bit. Then, we went with Green. Recall that Green did not exactly step up and wrest the job away from Lee for good. With the spotlight on him, Green made some bad throws against Baylor and did not exactly wow anyone. Starting against OU was Green's chance to really shine, and we got instead the shaky, deer-in-the-headlights. So, I think that Martinez has wowed everyone this fall so far, and the coaching staff will give him his shot in the spotlight. If he wows 'em the first couple of series, and particularly if he throws up some quick scores, we will see Lee and then Green. The coaches will grade them out, and the top grade will get the Idaho start, and so on, until after SoDakState, when we will see whichever one has been most consistent get the start from there out.

Posted by: MileHiHusker on August 30, 2010 12:23PM CST
I think it is important to see each of them in a game situation with significant reps. Some players are stars in practice and then soil themselves in games. I also think they need to decide on a starter after this game so he can work with the ones for the entire 2 weeks before the Washington game.

Posted by: Tennessee-Husker87 on August 30, 2010 12:24PM CST
I am thinking the same ...

Lee in the 1st Qtr.

Martinez in the 2nd Qtr

Green in the 3rd Qtr

Latravis and Kody mop up in the 4th ...

Probably much the same against the Vandals and South Dakota.

The trip to Washington will probably narrow the field to two QBs if that one is a tight ballgame and probably decide who is the leader of the pack for conference play.

Posted by: Blackshirtsdef on August 30, 2010 12:24PM CST
Maybe there should be a prediction "monitor" so that at the end of the year we see who "Blew it and who Knew it"...just coined it, and currently under copy right in"fridge"ment review!...except for Husker fans to use at will.

GBR!!

Posted by: 4BigRed on August 30, 2010 12:25PM CST
The reason I keep thinking there is a chance it will be T-Mart is that if it is Lee, why not just say it? He is, after all, the returning starter so what would be the big deal about saying it will be him. I don't buy the argument that the competition would stop. The other QB's know how close this race is and would keep pushing Lee. JMO

I dont know who's gonna start, and am not going to even try to predict it.....but I know, I WANT Martinez to start!

Want in one hand and poop in the other!

How pi$$ed are you all going to be when the first play from scrimmage has Martinez and Lee lined up next to each other in the shotgun with Green coming in motion from the WR position?

Posted by: Bbudus on August 30, 2010 12:29PM CST
Off topic, but from the AP

"COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Prosecutors have charged suspended Missouri Tigers running back Derrick Washington with sexual assault.

Assistant Boone County prosecutor Andrea Hayes says a single count of felony deviate sexual assault was filed Monday. She says she will seek $4,500 bond.

Washington has led the Tigers in rushing the past two seasons. Coach Gary Pinkel suspended him last week without disclosing details. Boone County court documents show Washington had been served with a protection order in late June and accused of sexual assault by a former Missouri tutor.

The Tigers open the season Saturday against Illinois in St. Louis."

Could be a long season for Mizzo.

Whoever it turns out to be, this year our QB is going to have to do more than just "manage" the game. We need a game breaker at that position and not a "manager". Just sayin.

Posted by: MileHiHusker on August 30, 2010 12:30PM CST
OTB,
And Washington lined up as TE.

Posted by: huskerbagz on August 30, 2010 12:31PM CST
Actually it will be Suh, as the coaching staff discovered that Ndamakong had one more year of eligibility as long as he played offense only to make it more fair for opposing teams.

Posted by: 4BigRed on August 30, 2010 12:31PM CST
OTB,
Actually I would love that (as long as the snap didn't go to Lee) ;>)

Posted by: Dave on August 30, 2010 12:39PM CST
All the angst many people have about needing to know who the starter is makes me chuckle. Whoever trots out on the field 1st on Saturday, will most likely, still be competing for the permanent #1 job. I expect the plan is to settle on one by the week of the Washington game, unless somebody separates themselves from the others prior to that.

One thing we can count on is that whoever the ultimate starter is, nobody will be able to say he didn't earn it. I don't think the reins are just going to be handed over for the sake of naming a starter. What a refreshing change from the BC years, as in Keller being anointed over Ganz, and we later see that Ganz was actually better.

Posted by: joe t on August 30, 2010 12:39PM CST
How many RS freshmen win championships? None

We need to name a starter and not screw around the first couple of games before Washington. Why play all three with significant playing time? It just doesn't make sense...the team has to gel. If you have more than 1 QB than you don't have a QB. History says that, too.

Posted by: throw46 on August 30, 2010 12:43PM CST
By all accounts and that's not much Lee always goes first. Therefore he will start.
After that anyones guess what kind of non-conference plays are installed.

That said I would be really shocked if either of the other two started any game this year.

Posted by: Silicon Valley Husker on August 30, 2010 12:45PM CST
Apparently Derrick Washington may have been looking for a TE as well. Yeesh.

Posted by: Outside The Box on August 30, 2010 12:45PM CST
Two predictions that you can take to the bank (or use to win BC's Corolla:

1. Whomever starts is going to be the most criticized of the three.

2. The one with the least playing time will likely be the one that the fans want to see more of.

Posted by: RyanSh on August 30, 2010 12:46PM CST
I'd bet T-Mart as well. If it was Green or the General they would have already announced or would do so today or tomorrow. However, in order to not create another media firestorm and protect the program and T-mart prior to the first offensive series, we will find out when the QB says "hut".

Posted by: throw46 on August 30, 2010 12:46PM CST
Dave wrote:

That may be true, but it won't feel like it if Lee starts.

Bbud - Also saw that Mizzery's starting LS (and backup TE) got a DWI over the weekend - the program's third (2 players, 1 coach) this summer.

Here's hoping we can have a "perfect season" as far as law enforcement is concerned...

Posted by: Silicon Valley Husker on August 30, 2010 12:49PM CST
I don't take the non-announcement as meaning much. Granted, this is WKU, but make your opponent prepare for very different potential approaches (Lee vs. Martinez...Green is a bit in the middle.) For a first year head coach, give him a few more headaches.

Posted by: ancient1 on August 30, 2010 12:52PM CST
Everybody is hot for the QB they've never seen. Obviously the ones they have seen are not perfect so the new guy must be better. Maybe Brion Carnes should start. He's not only never been seen he hasn't even been talked about. He must be really terrific!
Phooey. If they are all equal, start the senior.

Posted by: Fitzy on August 30, 2010 12:52PM CST

I would think the fact they have not named Lee the starter yet(and it's game week) that could be a hint that he probably is not going to be the starter. If he were the starter, which would be expected by most... they would just name him and say the others will play some too, wouldn't they? The other guys could not be too down that the SR incumbent was named starter to open up...

I am guessing, like BC that Taylor Martinez has shown too much play making ability in camp to NOT put him on the field.(he also looked good in the spring game and he likely has improved some more during the summer conditioning and fall camp).

When a likely starting Blackshirt LB reports that the defense is "sick of chasing Taylor Martinez around".... that says a little something to me as well.

The Blackshirts don't have trouble chasing any QB's around usually. If they have found a guy that gives them trouble... just think how opposing defenses that are not as good as them are gonna feel.

I look at what Griffin did/does for Baylor... Baylor is/was horrible, but just because Griffin is such a good athlete, HE by himself makes Baylor tough to play against... and he did not turn the ball over as a freshman when he started.

I think Taylor can be the same thorn in the side to opponents for Nebraska, with a lot more weapons around to help him succeed.

Bring the Pain-

LOL

My, the fans silence here in MO a week before the season opener is deafening.

Alright I bet my Corvette that Zac Lee or Green start before Martinez. The only way Martinez starts is if he is the second coming of T-fraiz or Eric Crouch. I just dont see it happening. Lee will start unless above statement proves true.

Posted by: goskers73 on August 30, 2010 1:25PM CST
Lee will start... they are not going to announce to
"control" competition and limit exposure, and thereby minimizing the pressure that the Nebraska faithful AND media would begin to amass on the young man. Lee, Green, Martinez are all susceptible to cracking under pressure. When he says he has a "plan," the plan is to "control" the level of physical competition AND emotional state prior to the start of the season. It is actual brilliant and good coaching IMO.

Posted by: Viking Husker on August 30, 2010 1:28PM CST
It's amazing to me that everyone has crowned T-Mart based on his performance in the spring game.

It reminds me of how everyone was sold on Green this time last year.

Lets see how T-Mart plays in a live game situation. Until then you won't know anything about him. And until you see him in a pressure situation against a stout defense, you won't know if he's the guy or not.

As of right now, Lee is the only one who has performed well in a pressure situation against a solid defense.

My call on QB derby...

All 3 get 2-3 series. Not really important "who starts" this week or next.

Same game 2

After grading it out for 2 weeks, best man wins job to start vs Washington

I would be quite surprised if Zac did not come out with the #1 offense for the first series however....

Come on Wats, do not use the 200 page playbook with Cody and Taylor just yet please. Start with 15 plays both can handle, with no checks or adjustments at the line of scrimmage....

It drives me crazy when our QB tries making 4 adjustments at the line and either can't get the play off or we execute poorly due to all the confusion.

Wats, keep it simple. Let the athletes play.

5 days and counting....and the lights go on.

Posted by: joe t on August 30, 2010 1:33PM CST
1. Lee
2a and 2b. Martinez/Green

I fail to see how Martinez will "spark" this offense running the ball when our OL has been abysmal at best. Cotton on the hot seat.

Posted by: Viking Husker on August 30, 2010 1:34PM CST
It's also possible that the "starter" on Saturday will not be the guy who is leading the competition.

I wouldn't put it past Bo and Wats to start a decoy so Washington is really confused...

Posted by: joe t on August 30, 2010 1:36PM CST
Um...we are Nebraska. Gimmicky decoy crap is for the lesser programs of the world.

Posted by: Gofor2 on August 30, 2010 1:37PM CST
There is no competition. They have a plan and they don't want a bunch of hoopla distracting TMArt until after the game.

Posted by: Miami Beach Husker on August 30, 2010 1:39PM CST
Hey, Wats needs swallow his pride and back off his tendency to want to go NFL/Callahan with a ultra sophisicated playbook.

You get no points for confusing the kids.

Better to run 30 plays really well and execute then try and out trick defenses.

After Zac graduates, our QB's will be all be underclassmen, and Cody is a big question mark right now. Last year, he was overwhelmed.

Posted by: N_trepid on August 30, 2010 1:40PM CST
I view our quarterback situation much the same way that I view our running back competition. Each guy brings his own unique strengths and talents to the position, and we're better off for having ALL of them.

If Bo has decided on a starter, I'm not surprised he isn't talking about it. We need the competition to continue at as high a level as possible. Keep striving, keep working, keep learning!

GO BIG RED

Posted by: Fitzy on August 30, 2010 1:41PM CST
I bet they plan on playing all 3 QB's and that is the true reason they have not named a starter. They will play them all until one of them "takes" the job.

Posted by: joe t on August 30, 2010 1:42PM CST
Whoa now....T.O's playbook wasn't a simple Dr. Suess book, yet the players learned it.

Kids are probably spending way too much time on Facebook than actually learning the thing. The playbook excuse is unwarranted.

Posted by: Silicon Valley Husker on August 30, 2010 1:44PM CST
Joe T....I remember watching an old NU bowl game on ESPN Classic (maybe the Orange Bowl from 1983 season?) where TO changed one of our safety's jersey number for the game because he knew Miami would key on him, so I guess decoy crap is not below us entirely.

I think Wiz is right that it will be a 2-3 game audition. Until someone actually shows it to me, I don't believe that Watson's play book is so large that an 18 year old can't read it or master it. We can't afford a QB who is only capable of running 15 plays and can't call an audible. I remember a previous option QB at NU who was a great athlete and had great stats. He went to the line, checked off to an audible and my brother said, "its an option to the right." It was and the defense stuffed it. The QB needs to know the offense and reading defenses well enough to make the adjustments.

Who takes the first snap doesn't really count until the UW game. Can't wait to see it live.

Posted by: drivebyposter on August 30, 2010 1:53PM CST
Shatelllllllllllllllllllll

This season is for the fans. So let the fans suit up.

Think about it. In Manhattan, Kan., under the ESPN Thursday night lights, Husker fans don white helmets and red jerseys while the purple people put on their armor. Then they whale at each other for 60 minutes, in a message board-comes-to-life scene. That would be great fun.

Then, repeat the exercise in Ames, Iowa, and when Missouri comes to Lincoln. Texas fans vs. Nebraska fans? Oh, the joy.

That won’t happen, of course. But this would be the year to do it. This will be a football season like none other at NU, or anywhere else where folks still claim the Big 12. The Big Red is saying goodbye. A lot of people are mad about it. The Huskers will run into angry mobs on the road. Bo Pelini and the players will be asked about it a ton. That will be the week-to-week narrative of this season.

How does it impact things? It shouldn’t. Fans and media care more about the emotions than the coaches and players, who are focused merely on the simple matter at hand and not how it affects bragging rights on the web or in the stands.

That’s what makes this Nebraska season harder to predict than usual. Will Jack Trice Field be a romping, stomping snake pit? Will Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert want to stick it to Jared Crick for going to the Big Ten? Probably not. But you don’t know. That variable — along with the usual questions like whether NU has one quarterback, never mind three, or if Crick is a leading man or a sidekick — makes this year’s predictions task more of a mine field than usual.

Once again, here goes nothing:

• Zac Lee gets the starting nod at Nebraska. Taylor Martinez plays a third-down utility role, but also gets mop-up time against Western Kentucky and Idaho. By the end of the Idaho game, Husker fans are calling for Martinez to start.

Doesn’t happen. Lee emerges as a play-making leader, not merely a facilitator. It’s one of the early surprises of this season. On Sept. 18 next to Lake Washington, Lee has his breakthrough game — on the same field that a kid named Scott Frost did 13 years ago.

• Nebraska 28, Washington 24. That’s a 3-0 start.

• Boise State beats Virginia Tech 21-17 on Labor Day Night. The next day, the BCS announces that you must win each game by 10 points or more to make the BCS title game.

• Ohio State 31, Miami 21. ESPN announces Terrelle Pryor wins the Heisman Trophy — er, is the leading candidate.

• On a wild and crazy night at Bill Snyder Family Stadium, Kansas State upsets the turnover-plagued Huskers 24-21. Snyder declares it “the greatest victory in the second act of the great turnaround in college football history.’’ Bo Pelini makes his team walk home.

• Joe Paterno opens twitter account.

• Oklahoma beats Texas 31-24. Longhorns Athletic Director DeLoss Dodds says OU now will get only $15 million next year.

• On the eve of their larger-than-life game, UT coach Mack Brown says Nebraska fans are the classiest in the nation.

• Nebraska sacks Gilbert four times, and Roy Helu and Rex Burkhead run wild as NU beats the Longhorns 31-17. Afterward, Husker fans give the Horns a golf clap. Brown says Nebraska has the classiest fans in the Big Ten.

• The Huskers survive the hangover trip to Eskimo Joe’s. Oklahoma State starts the Big 12 race at 0-3. Boone Pickens gets Mike Leach’s cell phone number.

• Blaine Gabbert survives this Nebraska game. Missouri doesn’t. The Huskers outduel Gabbert 28-21 in another NU-MU classic, the last one.

• Ricky Stanzi throws for 220 yards as the Hawkeyes beat Wisconsin 24-10 and stay undefeated.

• The Cyclones limp into the Nebraska game at 3-6. Jack Trice Stadium is full — thanks to Nebraska fans. No eight turnovers this game. NU 35, ISU 14.

• Turner Gill tells the Nebraska media how great it is to be back in Lincoln. Then the Nebraska-Kansas game starts.

• Pryor and Stanzi stage a dramatic battle of Heisman-esque proportions at Kinnick Stadium. Stanzi leads Iowa on a late touchdown drive, but Pryor answers by taking the Bucks to a game-winning field goal. Ohio State, with an earlier loss at Wisconsin, still heads to the Rose Bowl. This game seals the Heisman for Pryor.

• Nebraska can’t corral Jerrod Johnson and loses to the Aggies. Mike Sherman saves his job.

• NU beats Colorado in an emotional finale with former Huskers and Buffs watching on the sidelines. After the game, CU Athletic Director Mike Bohn offers to bring the Buffs back to Lincoln every year for $1.5 million a game.

• Joe Paterno announces his retirement on twitter. Bobby Bowden retweets it.

• In a classic, fitting final Big 12 championship game, Oklahoma rallies in the fourth quarter to beat Nebraska 28-27. Tom Osborne and Barry Switzer hug.

• Nebraska (10-3) accepts a bid from the Fiesta Bowl, which will stage a Big Ten rivalry game with Iowa. The game is sold out in 15 minutes.

• Oklahoma gets revenge on Boise State, 35-24, in the BCS national championship game in Glendale, Ariz.

• Nebraska beats Iowa as the Blackshirts smother Stanzi’s black jersey. Iowa fans tell Husker fans, “See you next year in Iowa City.’’ Stanzi says, “Big Ten, love it or leave it.’’ Bo Pelini says, “We love it.’’

I fail to see why cotton is on the hot seat. I don't want to hear he's unable to develop talent. That's pretty hard to due when they were injured and we didn't have any olinemen after Callacrap got let go.

Posted by: MileHiHusker on August 30, 2010 1:59PM CST
Remember, Green was a true Freshman last year. He came here in January when there were 3 QB's in front of him. One injury and one transfer later he was number 2. that was a lot of pressure and it showed. At least Martinez has one full year in the program and this past summer before he can even get in a game. Plus he was the California player of the year.

As I posted a long time ago, I expect TM to move into the starting roll. Now let me tell you why. With his escapability, opposing defenses are going to have to assign a linebacker or a safety as a spy. Assuming TM can pass and read defenses this will open up the TE over the middle, especially off the play action and zone read pass. The threat of the QB run will also cause the safeties to bite a lot which will open up the deep ball. With this threat, if our O-line plays well (and I think they will), our offense will be pretty much unstoppable (and explosive) unless they stop themselves with penalties or turnovers. This will be an exciting offense to watch because defending against it will be a "pick your poison" situation for defensive coordinators. I fully expect to see 8 and 9 in the box because opposing coaches will want TM to prove he can beat them with his arm. In that case TMart will need to read defenses and throw a clean accurate ball. If he can execute that part of his game.... I think 12-0 and playing for the BCS Championship is a distinct possibility. How good the D is will come down to linebacker play. Let's hope they step up because if they do, this team will dominate most opponents.

IF BC's guess is right, and it is Martinez, I hope he repeats his senior season in high school(undefeated champs).

Posted by: joe t on August 30, 2010 2:13PM CST
Charger...you said it yourself, he forced himself into a corner by having to use injured OL instead of developing some guys to pick it up. I disagree that he didn't have any guys, Cotton just chose to focus on his top 7 because he didn't know the offense well (via story from LJS early last year). Playing injured guys is not good coaching....

Posted by: charger on August 30, 2010 2:13PM CST
Based on what I saw of Martinez in the spring game all it was running the ball. All a defense has to do put 8 in the box and make him throw. Maybe he has improved since the spring game but can he truly read the defence make the adjustment and run the play. (not just take off & run)??

Posted by: JaxFL Husker on August 30, 2010 2:16PM CST
does anyone know of a location you can watch the 'Huskers in Jacksonville, FL ??

Posted by: joe t on August 30, 2010 2:18PM CST
Agree, Charger. Can't get too enamored with his running ability, because in THIS offense you have to make your reads AND throw the ball at the end of the day.

Posted by: CBHusker on August 30, 2010 2:21PM CST
I can see it now; The first offensive play of the W.Kentucky game, Bo has Cody Green go out and tells Shawn Watson:"Tell BC to go _____ himself!".

Sorry BC, I couldn't resist the "All The President's Men" line.

joe

Sometimes u got to do what u got to do. we had to play an injured qb also.

last yr's roster (according to husker pedia)
we had 22 olinemen of which 11 were freshmen or redshirt freshmen. I don't know how many of them were walkons. And the staff bit the bullet and chose not to play some of the freshmen. that's all i'm trying to say. Let's see how they preform this year. Deal?

Posted by: bigred-Ore on August 30, 2010 2:36PM CST
FWIW
I had to start making some calls back home to see if my usually reliable informants had any insight. What I'm hearing dovetails right into what connectedsker posted on the other blog. Green will redshirt and T-Mart is making a big run at this thing. Still think Zac will be our primary signal caller with Taylor getting time in every game. Think Florida when Tebow was a freshman or was it soph? (and they won the whole thing that year I believe)
One piece of gossip that I did find interesting was that the O lineman have really taken to Martinez. The term "natural leader" came up.

Just some home state gossip to fuel the fire. Usually get pretty good info from these though.

JaxFL - I'd suggest the NU Alumni website. They have a listing of watch sites:

I really like Lee and Martinez.......the spring game really opened my eyes up about Taylor. Evidentaly the fall practices have enabled Tmart to show case his talents to the point where the coaches can't ignore him. (i.e. the day TM missed practice.)
Lee is still my #1 guy just because how tough and smart he is......I don't think he'd ever lose a game for us. But, if Tmart can read defenses and go through his processsions as well as he can run then we have something pretty dam special in this guy. I, for one, am relieved that there is good depth at QB because, unfortunuately there's a good chance that we'll need that depth before being crowned Nat'l Champions.

JaxFL - Sorry! The Alumni site didn't have anything close to Jax, so Plan B was huskerpedia.com, who has something in Jax.

It doesn't really matter who is quarterbacking. The Blackshirts will score enough points to win this game.

Posted by: Uncle Fester on August 30, 2010 3:40PM CST
Does the kind of QB recruits that Pelini is recruiting offer a hint as to where the offensive philosophy is going? If so, and if there is a current QB that fits that philosophy, and if he is good enough, why would you wait to implement that philosophy?

Pelini didn't recruit Lee. He recruited Green, didn't he? Certainly Martinez.

Another thing. If it were Lee, then you might think they would announce it, because he is a senior and was the guy last year, so he would be used to the attention. But if they have an idea but haven't announced it, could it be because they want to keep the spotlight off the guy for as long as possible?

To me, it feels like Martinez.

Oklahoma beats Texas 31-24. Longhorns Athletic Director DeLoss Dodds says OU now will get only $15 million next year.

Oklahoma gets revenge on Boise State, 35-24, in the BCS national championship game in Glendale, Ariz.

DBP, Thanks! I like your predictions for the Wagondrivers, so true with their daddy UT, if they beat them too often, whoops lost revenue? Now Boise State, it would be fitting that Wagondrivers beat them on a game ending trick play? The Probationarooskie!

Joe Paterno announces his retirement on twitter. Bobby Bowden retweets it.

JoePa, I had a chance to meet this man while conducting a wrestling clinic at PSU one time?
Now that was good also?

Lots of love between TO and Barry?

Why shouldn't there be? Back in the days the nations eyes were usually focused on the two Big Reds?

DBP in 71 greatest game of the century, Johnny the Jet and company winning it all? AP that year final rankings #1 NU #2 OU #3 CU (your Buffs) only time ever, top 3 ranked teams from same conference? I think,I stand corrected if wrong? Bring on the ole Big Eight days of years goneby, as good as it gets?

My guess for this thread's subject, is DBP's General Lee is the starter but if he stumbles, a very short leash?

GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

"As of right now, Lee is the only one who has performed well in a pressure situation against a solid defense."

Hmmm...I must have missed that series.

Sounds like flashback fantasy hour to me, because there wasn't one game against a real team besides the bowl game that Lee could be described as "performing well in a pressure situation against a solid defense."

Or maybe you are talking about the time he helped guide the offense to a yard gain on 3 downs against TX after a Huge Niles Paul punt return....or that one time in fantasy football camp...or that amazing One first down Total for an entire half against TX.

w/e lol...performed well in a pressure situtation against a solid defense.

Now that's funny.

If any game last year besides the bowl game or the cupcakes is your idea of performing well, I'd hate to see what crappy looks like on your scale.

Posted by: rluben on August 30, 2010 5:01PM CST
Maybe you were suggesting Mizzery was a solid defense? Not really, that's more fantasy land stuff, they were average and that's being kind.

Luckily he will get more help this year from a deeper, more talented, tougher O line and improved skill play, confidence of the staff in the Offense's abilities and a new attitude that has taken awhile to take hold on that side of the ball's transition from cute and soft to mean and explosive.

If he plays much that is. Time will tell, I think he would excel this year under this new look O and not having a bad arm.

But then again any of the other guys should be able to make plays too this year.

But please, don't distort facts pretending he was something amazing last year under pressure against solid teams.

He wasn't even adequate, let alone anything closely resembling amazing.

cody green STARTS AND THE LINEBACKER POSITION WILL BE A BIG FACTOR IN HOW WELL D PLAYS BO MIGHT HAVE TO GET CREATIVE FISCHER BIG LOSS AND I THINK DILLARD WAS A MONSTER FOR THE N LAST YEAR BO KEEPING GREEN STARTING UNDER WRAPS TO KEEP PRESSURE OFF IF GREEN JUST RELAXS SOME HE WILL SHOW EVERYONE WHY HE GOT SCHOLARSHIP EVEN THOUGH HE WAS HURT SENIOR YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL THATS HOW HIGHLY COACHES THINK OF GREEN TMART BETTER WANT TO CHANGE POSITIONS OR SCHOOLS BOOK-IT DANO

"Sounds like flashback fantasy hour to me,"....rluben thats a classic. lol.

No, if Lee is the guy, why the secrecy?

The underclassman won't be offended if they don't start, they'll get their shot. Trying to push Lee to become better? Not real strong, he knows what he has to do.

The secrecy is to protect TMArt before his start. Give me a better reason.

Posted by: AZHUSKER_2010 on August 30, 2010 6:35PM CST
I dont see Cody Green getting any time at all... I think this race is now between T-Mart and Lee. I have a hunch that T-Mart will operate the wildcat with Burkhead. I dont believe the Huskers are National Championship contenders with an inexperienced QB under center... Green will transfer

Posted by: Gofor2 on August 30, 2010 7:14PM CST
I see TMart getting the start and playing the majority of time to give him experience, Lee waiting in the wings to save the bacon if TMart falters. Lee will be a superb backup and I wouldn't be surprised if he saves some games in the 4th.

Schuffling in QB's doesn't make sense if the starter has no experience. If the starter does, then that seems reasonable to bring the young guy along. But the young guy will mature a lot faster if he's in there all the time.

As I've said, I have no frame of reference to judge who should be the starter. My prediction is from the way this is being handled. It seems pretty obvious to me going back a few weeks.

If I'm wrong I will gladly eat my hat. I don't have a preference, I'm just reporting the facts.

Someone putting there vette on the line that Lee will start? I will take a piece of that action. People asking for a game manager ? That sounds like a loser Callahan way to go.
For everyone in the little 12 that is going to be gunning against us this year then the choice is crystal clear. Players talking about him and the defence coming out and saying they are tired of chasing him down.
I present to you Nebraska's starting QB,
TAYLOR MARTINEZ.
Book em Danno for sure.

Posted by: Mascoutah on August 30, 2010 7:14PM CST
This one is easy. On the first play from scrimmage, Rex Burkhead lines up in the Wildcat. That way, Bo doesn't have to name a "starter".

Posted by: big red 1 on August 30, 2010 7:18PM CST
Gofor: Been hearing much talk here in Lincoln. See a player once in a wile come into the store and they are talking about Martinez.
I see BO"S hand in this more than last year. We will be a running team with an improved line.

Not that I'm a Callahan fan, but he had a QB that was conference offensive player of the year and Joe Ganz seemed to do pretty well as a game manager. We all know that the defense's performance was the major problem in those years.

I don't care who starts either....if Gofor is right, the only thing that not naming Martinez does today is save him 4 days of press attention, but he's off limits anyways until after the game.

Posted by: big red 1 on August 30, 2010 8:09PM CST
Gofor: Well I don't know about that but I use to play Dungeons and Dragons a bunch when I was younger and stayed at a Super 8 once. Does that count ?

Not really concerned about this question, I would rather see him hand out the Blackshirts to those that earned it... before mid-season!

Posted by: eddie again on August 31, 2010 9:51AM CST
to date, i have found little to criticize concerning our current fb coaching staff.

i trust bo knows what he is doing in preparing them for this season.

as i have not seen tmart play, and i know the general was hurt most of last year, and i am sure cody has matured, it seems that we will be find whoever the starter may be.

having said that, pure speed in a qb is rare and one of the receivers said lee is throwing great and has great arm strenght but tmart has a stronger arm and can put them on the money.

it seems that in passing the rank is lee, martinez, green and in running the rank is martinez, green, lee.

since we want to become a more powerful running team and want the running game to be our offensive foundation, the best runner may be the starter.

when you run the option, qb speed is vital for its success.

Posted by: rollhuskers on August 31, 2010 6:15PM CST
I really dont see us getting crazy with playing 3 qb's on Saturday...seems foolish to me..i think Lee starts and plays most of the game, but you will see Martinez in for a few series, possibly in some type of wildcat or option formation with Burkhead or Robinson in the backfield..the competition for QB has been going on all summer, they wont be playing that during the first game, its time to come out and play the game, not start a qb competition....Green might make it in late if we are comfortably in the lead, and trying to prevent injuries....
