Pelini: Jackson, Davie status 'pending'
Posted by: Steve Sipple on May 25, 2011 at 8:18PM CST

Talked to Nebraska football coach Bo Pelini on Wednesday about a couple matters, including a few nuts and bolts issues:

-- Nebraska senior defensive tackle Jared Crick (knee) and junior defensive end Cameron Meredith (shoulder) are cleared for the June 6 start of summer conditioning, Pelini said. Meredith missed all of spring practice, and Crick missed most of it. Junior cornerback Jase Dean, a walk-on from Bridgeport, is the only player who won't be participating in the off-season program because of injury, the coach said.

-- Two incoming freshmen -- cornerback Charles Jackson and wide receiver/athlete Daniel Davie -- have some academic issues "pending" before they can officially join the team. Jackson, in an interview Wednesday on Unsportsmanlike Conduct (1620 AM), expressed confidence that he'll clear the necessary academic hurdles and plans to enroll for NU's second summer session in July. Meanwhile, Davie also is working on summer course work to get eligible.

--Pelini said running back Braylon Heard, a 2010 signee who was academically ineligible, is cleared and will be part of the summer-conditioning program.

--Quarterback Taylor Martinez, a 12-game starter last year, has been working out on his own in his homestate California. "That's not unusual," Pelini said. "Guys do that all the time this time of year."

Glad to see Heard cleared. We need a BAM!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Sabretooth on May 25, 2011 8:33PM CST
Hope Jackson and Davie take care of their business and are ready to go at the start of fall camp.

Posted by: PaintItRed on May 25, 2011 8:51PM CST
TMart better be actually working out in his offtime, and not sitting around playing video games. He needs to be actively working his ankle and turf-toe, and making sure he's getting to 100%.

Posted by: PT Husker on May 25, 2011 8:54PM CST
I hope we hear more about it than we have in the past.

Not likely however.

Posted by: cstxfn on May 25, 2011 9:01PM CST
Wait a minute, what am I missing? If Martinez has been working out on his own back in California, how has he been attending classes. Maybe Bo means since school has been out? How long has that been?

Posted by: Islander/Husker on May 25, 2011 9:08PM CST
Good to see Heard finally on board. It's been a long road for him. Has not played for a year, so anxious to see how fast he can work the kinks outs.

Posted by: wacky4huskers on May 25, 2011 9:21PM CST
Not happy having 2 of the recruits starting out with academic issues to be cleaned up.

Happy to see Heard is cleared to join the team as we will need help for Superman.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on May 25, 2011 9:25PM CST
School has been out I believe, with the first summer classes starting on June 6. It's ok to head home in my view, the kids do need a break. If I remember right, Suh went home for several weeks or so in his senior year, before returning for summer workouts.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on May 25, 2011 9:31PM CST
Jackson sounds like he is closer than Davie. Good too, to see Crick and Meredith a good to go for summer conditioning.

Posted by: wacky4huskers on May 25, 2011 9:34PM CST
IH, Jackson says he hopes to be able to join them for the second summer session and that won't be too bad IMO, assuming he does make it.

Posted by: PT Husker on May 25, 2011 9:39PM CST
It is senior night LITR. I think I am qualified to join in.

Posted by: wacky4huskers on May 25, 2011 9:42PM CST
PT, yes you are, the same as the rest of us, LOL

Posted by: Islander/Husker on May 25, 2011 9:44PM CST
There is always 1 or 2 recruits each year having to hurdle some academic issues. So clear the hurdles, some don't.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on May 25, 2011 9:45PM CST
Senior's rule. LOL.

Prediction contest:

Who will the Huskers' 3rd leading rusher be in 2011?

Posted by: PT Husker on May 25, 2011 9:46PM CST
How much rain IH?

Posted by: PT Husker on May 25, 2011 9:49PM CST
Tt is a tough one Exiled. Not even sure who will be 2nd.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on May 25, 2011 9:49PM CST
PT - yep, May is really going by very quickly. August is not that far away.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on May 25, 2011 9:51PM CST
About 2 and a half inches since yesterday, and about 9 inches in the last week or so. It can stop anytime.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on May 25, 2011 9:53PM CST
Maybe the fullback will be the 3rd leading rusher.

Posted by: gregefta on May 25, 2011 9:53PM CST
Classes at UNL ended on April 30th. If Martinez had his last final prior to the 30th, he could have gone home as early as the 26th or 27th.... That said, working out at home in CA isn't a big deal. I wouldn't make a big deal out of it.

Behave Trash or we will send you to your room.

Fine.
If I'm not old enough to hang out here, I'll go hit up the Justin Bieber message boards.

Thanks greg... I wasn't thinking anything was suspicious. It's permanently stuck in my head that classes run up to the week going into Memorial Day.

I am going with Wacky. You younguns keep things under control

Posted by: Islander/Husker on May 25, 2011 10:05PM CST
Ok, we will pass the baton to the younguns for the rest of the night. I am going to say good night as well.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on May 25, 2011 10:07PM CST
I gotta say good night as well. We can pass the baton to the younger set.

Posted by: zaruba on May 25, 2011 10:10PM CST
Great to see the new Taylor "the teammate" Martinez is still the same old Taylor "me me me" Martinez. . .

So long as he is the QB I don't see any sort of a championship in our future. ...sort of sad. . .

Posted by: Trashman on May 25, 2011 10:15PM CST
2010 Big 12 North Champion?

Posted by: zaruba on May 25, 2011 10:17PM CST
@Badgerland, a year ago, and as far back as I can recall, we all thought the Big10 was not only over rated, underskilled and slow, the Big10 teams proved it . . . on the field. What has changed? With the exception of a skilled and fast Nebraska team added to the league nothing else has changed.

On October 1 Nebraska will throttle Wisconsin. . . you are too slow, too limited and just aren't very good.

You need to find another messageboard where all the posters don't understand the true nature of Big 10 football. In Nebraska, we understand the step down in competition we are taking. . . if you don't understand this, you will about 1/2 through the 2nd quarter of the Oct 1 NU-Wis game. . .. .

You poor S O B. .. ..

Posted by: zaruba on May 25, 2011 10:23PM CST
Sorry trashman, I don't consider the B12 North any more of a championship that a 2nd grade track participation ribbon . . . there is only one championship that the fans in Nebraska care about and that is the BCS championship. . .. .

as far as any Big Ten championship, again, who cares. . . . I've grown up with the understanding the truth about Big Ten football. ...too slow, over rated, and over hyped. . . I expect to advance to a BCS game out of the Big Ten, but any championship label won't mean much. . .(just between you and me. .... the teams in the Big Ten aren't very good). . just saying

2 summers ago TM was here in Lincoln for the Summer...How do I know? I bought some furniture from that place in front of Wallyworld (Slumberwhatever) and he and Zak delivered and set it up for me.

I think Zak owned the truck and they contracted out to the store. I showed them my view of the stadium's big screen from my balcony.

TM was wearing a Cornfed T-shirt and when I commented on it he said it was a company he and his dad owned and ran.

He commented on my red floor sweeper he saw leaning against a wall..."Hey, we used to have one of those!" I later read that after the divorce, when his dad was having a hard time (depression) and they lived in a small place, Taylor did all of the housework.

They couldn't afford a vacuum cleaner so he used that little boxy thing to clean the carpets and floors. He also saw my vacuum and looked like he wanted to ask why I had both. They both seemed like a couple of nice quiet kids. Huge quiet kids, but nice.

If he was here for that summer and perhaps last summer as well, I don't begrudge him a summer with his family.

Zaruba

I get that, but to get to a BCS Game, winning the B1G will be something that likely needs to be accomplished. You can't win the B1G without winning the Legends (or whatever other name they end up changing it to).

So I guess what I'm saying is if TMart indeed leads this team and duplicates the task of helping NU win their division....they are then one win shy of getting to the goal of where you expect them to be.

Posted by: RedGore on May 25, 2011 10:39PM CST
Hey Trash, Where do you keep disappearing to?
Weird!

Posted by: huskers4_eva on May 25, 2011 10:40PM CST
It's obvious the SEC is the best conference in college football, no questions asked. Last year, I probably even would have put the Big 10 ahead of the Big 12.

Even so, with Nebraska entering the Big 10, don't expect the three conference leaders OSU, Michigan St., and Wackyconsin to steam role this year. Now they'll actually have some competition with Nebraska coming in.

Regardless of what Wacky says, the Big 10 is a lot more competitive with Nebraska joining. It'll be more heated than ever. Because of that, the Big 10 should be the clear #2 conference in the country. Then I would still put the Big 12 next, but I will say the Pac 10 may be moving up. However, it was all and only Oregon.

Anyway... Go Huskers!

Posted by: huskers4_eva on May 25, 2011 10:43PM CST
Wait, is Wacky and Badgerland two different guys here? Or am I imagining something?

Posted by: cstxfn on May 25, 2011 10:47PM CST
huskers4....definitely 2 different guys

Posted by: RedGore on May 25, 2011 10:50PM CST
Lets see...Wack & Badgirl occasionally share similar opinions...

Trash and h4_e occaisionally share the same silver screen...

Weird!

Sheesh!

What are the odds?

How come we haven't had any OSU, Michigan, Michigan St, hell even Iowa fans in the Husker blogs yet? Two Wisconsin turds seems a little strange to me.

Posted by: cstxfn on May 25, 2011 11:08PM CST
huskers4... Besides Badgerland, who is the other?

Posted by: huskers4_eva on May 25, 2011 11:09PM CST
I mean is it because Wimpconsin finally had a winning season and now they feel threatened that the real Big Red is joining the conference. But I dunno, just saying I guess.

Posted by: huskers4_eva on May 25, 2011 11:11PM CST
cst - I thought there was a fellow by the name of Wacky. Or am I getting him confused and he's a Husker fan. If so, I apologize. But I could have swore he was a turd from Wisconsin talking smack.

Posted by: huskers4_eva on May 25, 2011 11:13PM CST
But in all seriousness, I have all the respect for Wisconsin's football team. Good team. But Nebraska ain't too bad themselves. Should make a good game.

Dear Diary,

This is cool. Today I learned that The Big 12 Divisional championship is worth nearly as much as a primary school award that is given to everyone who joins in on the fun.

B1G Divisional and Conference championships are worth even less. A BCS win would be ok; but really, nothing less than a National Championship will do!

I don't even know why anyone would even care about the journey that it takes to get there...Hmmph!

Gosh! I feel just like I was 13 again!! Do you think that when I do this to my hair...do I look like Justin Beiber?

Do you think Ashley and Tori like me?...Hee Hee...Who cares!! :))) I wonder if anyone would notice if I sneak out with my skate...I'm soooo booooored!!!!

Posted by: huskers4_eva on May 25, 2011 11:28PM CST
RedGore- That was creepy what you did just there.

Posted by: cstxfn on May 25, 2011 11:28PM CST
huskers4... I know who you mean. It was "Bucky". I believe he crossed the line and the LITR content editor, Victoria, put a mob hit on him.

There is a regular poster on here who goes by "wackey4huskers", and some of us shorten his name to Wacky. That's who I thought you meant because Wacky is a fine fellow and obvious Husker fan, like you.

Posted by: cstxfn on May 25, 2011 11:31PM CST
RG... Any good news to report?

Posted by: RedGore on May 25, 2011 11:35PM CST
cst,

This is why I am so confused about my own identity.

Today I went and got my photo retaken for my DL renewal...which I had done once already a couple months ago.

They were supposed to send it to me in the mail but I never got it. They said they dent it to me already, but I never got it. When I asked to have it sent again, they said they had already sent it to me twice.

I told them I didn't understand, because I still don't have one. They said come in again and give us more money and we will send you a duplicate.

I went in and they said where is your proof (bills, etc.) that you live here. I said I already showed it to you the last time I was here and no one said I had to bring them again. But, I'll go get some and be right back again. No, we will be closed before you get back.

So...after 3 trips there and 2 payments later, I'm still in the same boat. Waiting for my DL.

My bank account is pretty much depleted; I don't use CCs; and my SS# is old and the # looks way too different from anyone else's here, so it could be suspect.

My skin is brown, I have 3 middle names- that I picked out, I only have 2 vowels and 2 consonants in my last name, yet no one can pronounce it properly, and everyone else here is someone else and the same as everyone else, and who knows who else... Now do you see why I am so confused?

Posted by: RedGore on May 25, 2011 11:45PM CST
cst,

Still in the same holding pattern as yesterday...I don't know if they've spoken with my previous employers yet.

Went to a lab where I had to assure 4 young ladies that I was certain I could immediately "produce" before I was allowed to pee into a cup- after I was warned NOT to flush the toilet once I was done.

Had to watch them separate it into 2 containers, seal them with sticky labels that I then had to initial. I now have to wait 24 to 48 hours for them to send the results to my potential employer.

All of this is making me a bit batty, I guess.

Posted by: RedGore on May 25, 2011 11:48PM CST
h4_e,

Sorry to creep you out. Just a bit tired of all of the "know-it-alls" who are also "above-it-all" coming on here and poo poo-ing every-one and every-thing.

Posted by: cstxfn on May 25, 2011 11:53PM CST
RG... Wish I could change all that. Life is hard enough and then you get to deal with the folks at the DMV to really make your day complete.

Posted by: RedGore on May 26, 2011 12:02AM CST
Hoi!!!

I know, cst. And thanks. I guess it could be worse...I could be working there.

But, on the bright side, I thought the interview yesterday went really well, and the interviewers seemed to give off the "vibe" that meshed with what I was looking for. And the"feel" of the place was fairly good. Didn't sense any of that weird tension in the people I had contact with outside of the interview office...Just feeling antsy waiting.

How are things for you? Any more rain? Do you think you'll get to mow your lawn this summer, or just sweep it with a push broom?

Posted by: cstxfn on May 26, 2011 12:16AM CST
We had some rain, that helps us neighborhood folks and our lawns. I water the lawn and have the utility bill from Hell, between the electricity and the water bill. The farmers and ranchers are the ones who really suffer. I'm still mowing and doing mosquito control.
I'm going to hit the sack. Check your inbox when you have a chance.

Posted by: Dave on May 26, 2011 7:49AM CST
OK, I have a few things to address:

-Re: Badgerland; don't even respond to this idiot troll. Badger fans have a very limited knowledge of college football.

-Backlash: You probably only hear what fits your template. I could care less that you apparently don't like the coach who has brought us back into relevance.

-Re: TMart - My understanding was that he was back in CA working with a QB coach on footwork, etc. since the semester ended. I didn't get the impression that he was staying out there for the entire summer conditioning sessions. Even if he does, I don't care. He'll be fine.

Generally, there appear to be too many of you who get your panties in a bunch over the littlest things. Geez, just relax and try to enjoy our first year in the Big 10. All indications are that our roster is shaping up to the point where we could accomplish good things on a consistent basis. Do we have to win every game? No, nobody usually does.

Ignore the trolls and the haters, and just look forward to the continued improvement of the Huskers.

Posted by: charger on May 26, 2011 7:51AM CST
Yup he run him off so he could hang around & signal in the plays.

What a maroon u are backlash!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: charger on May 26, 2011 8:10AM CST
Dave....Good points.

So do you assume that TM will be back for the start of summer conditioning? To me him being here for 7 on 7 will be very important. BC will really be putting on the heat for the starting job come fall if he don't.

Posted by: Dave on May 26, 2011 8:19AM CST
charger, I assume he'll be back for that. He realizes he's got competition, so he won't want to get behind.

Posted by: Trashman on May 26, 2011 8:21AM CST
Chhharger

BC still has eligibility left?

And has been wasting all of that athletic ability behind a desk at LJS as a sports writer?

I am now really looking forward to hearing more about the 7 on 7s. Hopefully he's working out in Lincoln with his "teammates" so everyone doesn't doubt his leadership ability....

Posted by: charger on May 26, 2011 8:32AM CST
Dave...You know that you probably opened up a can of worms about Martinez working out with a QB coach in Cal. People will think that Beck can't coach QBs. :)

Posted by: Dave on May 26, 2011 8:35AM CST
The trolls will always think what they want, but the truth is that the NCAA wouldn't approve of Beck working with Martinez since Spring Practice ended.

Posted by: TomOs on May 26, 2011 8:47AM CST
To answer the ?... of who will be the third leading rusher next year.. I hope it is the QB.. and he is not be the number 1 or 2 rusher.. need a healthy QB at the end of the year, less reliance on the QB for running may be a good thing.

Posted by: charger on May 26, 2011 8:55AM CST
Dave....I forgot about it being summer, duh on my part.

Posted by: charger on May 26, 2011 9:00AM CST
Tom....I beleive we'll see the 3 leading rusher come outa the young guns coming in. Ameer (ms) is my pick.

Posted by: TomOs on May 26, 2011 9:17AM CST
Rex will be number one, #2 and #3, two of the young guns (Heard, A.Green, Ameer), #4 the QB. Personally I think Green is a sure bet to see a lot of action and make a big impact on the O. Improved O line play will be the difference maker in how well we do next year on O.
The team next year I see our biggest threat for our division is Michigan St.. Wisconcant, then MI. This will not be a cakewalk to the Division title. I dont think our division title winner will get by without at least one loss in the division and maybe two, with the head on head winner deciding who takes the crown.

Posted by: Dave on May 26, 2011 9:37AM CST
TomOs

Wisconsin is not in our division. I think a darkhorse could be Northwestern, as they don't play either Wisconsin or Ohio State. They have Michigan, Michigan St., and Penn State at home, while traveling to Iowa and Nebraska.

Posted by: TomOs on May 26, 2011 9:44AM CST
right. wisconcant isnt.. duh.. so much talk about them on here, included them.. NW .. is Persa back?

Posted by: charger on May 26, 2011 9:52AM CST
Northwestern runs a spread type of offense correct?

Posted by: Sabretooth on May 26, 2011 9:57AM CST
Yes Persa is back this year for Northwestern. His Achilles tendon should be fully healed.

Posted by: Sabretooth on May 26, 2011 9:59AM CST
Yes they do, Charger

Posted by: TomOs on May 26, 2011 10:07AM CST
Good point about NW U... their schedule is an advantage.. with Persa healthy, definite possiblity to contend.. Persa, reminded me a bit of Joey G.. a gamer.

Posted by: charger on May 26, 2011 10:13AM CST
We must remember most of the B1G haven't seem the spread offense as much as we have. I also know that they have no idea at how fast NU's team speed is.

Posted by: TomOs on May 26, 2011 10:13AM CST
I think the wildcard in our O next fall will be J. Turner.. if he develops into the position, slot or WR, its a dimension we havent had in a long time.. wondering if he is not playing the slot, who would replace him?

Posted by: charger on May 26, 2011 10:21AM CST
Turner will have to learn how to be a good blocker. Can't have him on the field if we are only in passing downs.

Posted by: TomOs on May 26, 2011 10:29AM CST
I see him more than just catching passes downfield.. I hope he is involved in the run scheme, reverses, options, counters and screen/shovel passes.

Posted by: charger on May 26, 2011 10:45AM CST
Tom.... that's what i was refering to. He has to be able to block in order to be involved in the run game also.

Posted by: Dave on May 26, 2011 11:04AM CST
I have a feeling that even if he's not the best blocker, Turner will be on the field more than he would have been under Watson/Gilmore. Beck wants the best athletes on the field.

Posted by: TomOs on May 26, 2011 11:33AM CST
If he is the threat I think he can be in the slot or WR.. he is going to attract attention of the D from the OLB and a Safety, he would take some of the D to put them out of position.. and if he is more involved as possible runner in the game or as a decoy to the offside of the running play, he wont have to block as much. I may be over hyping an unproven player, its just what I would like to see happen. Not really trying to underscore the importance of blocking, just sometimes you can achieve the same effect with certain play calling. He has to prove he is this big threat, like a Maclin of Mizzu was.

Posted by: belacoz on May 26, 2011 6:49PM CST
I see the #1 rusher being Martinez, #2 Burkhead, #3 Green.

I think Turner and Bell will be huge additions to the offense this year.

Posted by: casualobserver on May 26, 2011 10:31PM CST
Bel... Are you basing your #1 rusher projection on his ankle being 98% ready and his turf toe being 99% ready?
