Pelini breaks down the Owls
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on August 29, 2009 at 12:09PM CST
In one week, this town will be hopping. The Huskers are practicing today, though the media does not have access to the team again until Monday.

But I think we're to the point -- yes, yes we are -- where we can actually start talking about Nebraska's first foe.

So what about Florida Atlantic?

Defensive coordinator Carl Pelini provided a general breakdown of Florida Atlantic's offense this week: "Goes through the quarterback (Rusty Smith). I was really impressed with their running back a year ago. He's gone. Couple of the younger guys played but didn't get a lot of snaps to get a feel for it. They do have a good running game and they stress the running game. They have a great play-action game off of that, but I think the quarterback is very talented. He's got a big-time arm.

"Tight ends can run pretty well. They're similar to our tight ends and that they can get down the field in a hurry, and it creates match-up problems for your defense. And they got a lot of speed at the wide receiver. Having changed a few guys on the offensive line, it will be interesting to see how that unit performs. But they do have three starters back, and the guys who aren't back, the new guys did get some playing time last year so we did get to watch them on some tape."

Cliff's Notes rundown: FAU last year ranked 62nd in scoring offense, 66th in rushing offense, 25th in passing offense and 42nd in total offense.

Defense wasn't as good. The Owls ranked 81st in scoring defense, 98th in rushing defense, 81st in passing defense and 92nd in total defense, giving up an average of 400 yards per game.

Should be a good game for about a half or until a lack of depth rears it's ugly head. Then the gates will open and the sea of red will come pouring through. (pardon the pun)

We will destroy their lines.

Thx Brian for the update and all the Husker news this week. We're counting down a few days and hours now. Go Big Red

In that picture of Smith, he brings his arm back pretty far. May nnt have a quick release.

Soooo. Number 11, the chicken neck, is the QB. Interesting.

FAU will be a good opening opponent. Although I think the score will be close at halftime maybe 14-10 or 21-10, our depth and size will take over the game and probably win 48-21.

FAU has some athletes and will test us on some big plays. Will be interesting to see who starts and who earned the PT during spring and fall camps.

Watchin ESPN. Watching another player with a scheduled visit to Nebraska... Gio Bernard. Good grief! That guy is outrageous.

Posted by: Bornhusker on August 29, 2009 2:24PM CST
Hopefully this will be a good game to gain some confidence for both the new QB and for the running game.

But before we get overconfident, let's remember that their 92nd total defense ranking last year was 1 slot ahead of Oklahoma State's – and we know OK State was a pretty fair team.

Not saying we won't roll; just that it if we sputter at first and they gain some confidence it could be tough.

GBR

Step - I was watching that as well. He gets to the edge pretty quick and has some nice moves. Not the biggest back in terms of height I've ever seen, but he's got some power in those legs. Probably still got some growing to do. He would be a nice addition to the team.

sportillustrated.cnn.com college football homepage has an article about Suh and the Heisman, unfortunately it's about how he's one of the best players in the country and has virtually no chance but wow!

After rereading that statement is a bit misleading. It's about how players in the less high profile positions get little consideration, nevertheless always nice to have the recognition for one of our guys!

islander/husker

I agree. His arm is very far back. Sounds like we'll be able to score. It's just a matter of shutting down their offense.

I loved watching Giovanni Bernard today too. Man he's a beast. I hope we land him but there is a lot of competition. He's really impress with FSU. I'd rather just get Aaron Green next year though!!!! GBR!!!! His cousin is visiting us (austin hill). He is a very good WR and if he commits it will be hard for Aaron not to come here because then he will have his bro and cousin here too.

two comments _ BornHusker: the danger of comparing FAU's defensive stats to OkState's is the fact that OkSt played the B12S plus Mizzoo last year. Without looking I know that FAU didn't play against comparable offenses. I'd hazzard to guess that the BEST offense they played last year would be ranked in the lower tier in B12.... As far as Gio Benard goes he is as likely to follow his older brother Yvenson to Oregon State as not. Yvenson is the #2 all time leading rusher @ OSU and is currently playing in the CFL

I'm changing my prediction from 45-17

to

61-13.

Open the gates!

600+ of total offense.

Yeah Bernard looks good to me. He's awful quick with that low center. Love to have him. We got a visit ans thats all that matters.

rib))) HE may got to Oregon State... but it's not 100% for sure. Sometimes brothers like to make a name for themselves.

Slow day for story lines and post. The sports writers at LJS need a rest after giving us rapid fire story lines after the relaunch.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on August 29, 2009 5:20PM CST
Still would like to see each post numbered. Don't know if they will do that. I know that is something every beta tester requested. It might have to so with the size of the memory.

FAU not a good team. Nebraska gets a better opponent against their own scout team. If this isn't an ez win it oughta be. I really don't like these games against cupcakes. I know everyone is doing it but I don't like it. I just can't get excited over beating the snot out of a mismatched opponent. What does it prove?

It isn't a memory constraint - you can store some pretty large integers in just a couple of bytes (from 0 to 65,536). It's probably more along the lines of how they decided to model the blog, and whether they wanted to include a number attribute per blog entry.

Either way, it should be a simple feature to add (and even retro fit onto previous blogs).

FAU, cannot play headsup with Huskers for too long? So have to rely on turnovers, a sloppy game for Big Red, and some trick plays etc. I just don't think they have the athletes to go toe to toe, so they will try lots of different things I imagine? In the end it will be around a 35 to 14 spread I am predicting with one of their TD's coming late in the game? GBR!

The first step in the quest for the Sunbelt Championship

Dont underestimate your opponent.. I remember a game in the late 70's.. with a young QB, called the Throw'n Somoan.. from WSU.. a game we were suppose to win handily.. if pro scouts are looking, there is a good reason.

Looks like everybody must be in Church. Not much going on this morning.

Fans are usually the ones that underestimate teams. Coaches never do. (at least not in public). IMO as long as we pay attention to detail it is going to be a fine year. But that is not a new thought by any means.
