Osborne's input
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on November 14, 2009 at 7:01PM CST

I have a feeling this is going to be a big topic in the next few days, so let's get it started. You may have noticed a third-quarter Nebraska offensive play that seemed out of the Husker playbook from the 90s.

Zac Lee started to run the option to his right, then pulled back and found Niles Paul for a 45-yard game inside the Kansas 10. It looked like a play from Scott Frost or Eric Crouch or whoever.

Shawn Watson smiled after the game, recalling it. That play was added about two weeks ago, he said.

"Coach Osborne's input," he said, laughing. "It's serious. Coach Osborne's been awesome. He understands. He gets it. And he never forces anything on me. All he does is say, 'Look, here are some things that you may want to consider now that you are moving into this aspect of your game.' And Coach, he's a beautiful human being...." (Watson got emotionally choked up at this point for a couple seconds). "All those little twists, great stuff, he's helped enhance us. So Coach gets the credit for those."

Watson said it's just a matter of evolving. "If you've been in there hacking away with us, you know what we've been through this year. We'd get a guy hurt. ... You seen (the movie) 'Apollo 13?' We had to put all the pieces on the table. We had to put all the pieces on the table and find a way. The staff's been awesome. We've had to get out of all of our comfort zones. Because we thought we had something really special that we were working on. And we had to get out of our comfort zone and go back and put all the pieces on the table, and hack away and find a way."

Watson said Osborne has even offered him some old video cutups of plays like the one we're talking about. Ron Brown, with his option knowledge, also has been important to the process, the coordinator said.

"I have humility so I just listened and learned and those guys have been big helping us," Watson said.

About Osborne, Watson said: "He's awesome. You want Tom Osborne as your athletic director. He's a coach. He gets it. He understands it. He knows. So when he gives you good input, he's a Hall-of-Fame coach. There's not a guy in our building that doesn't stop and listen and we heed what he says. And he's always gracious enough to say, 'Tweak it to what you''ve got. Make it yours.' And that's what we've done."

Watson said Osborne always comes to practice and watches, "but that's because he's a football fan. He doesn't get involved. But he'll come and say, 'Have you thought about this?' He'll call me and come down. Usually he comes down early in the morning, cause I'm an early-in-the-morning guy and so is he, and we have a chance to talk before we go to work."

Watson said Osborne never imposes ideas on coaches, but he sure doesn't mind the former coach's suggestions.

"You can't be so proud that your pride gets in the way of you winning as a team," Watson said. "I'll never do that. I love what I know, but I'm not afraid to open my box up and go outside my box so that we can win. That's easy to do when it's about the team."

Hey nish do you owe me dinner?

Posted by: Displaced_Husker on November 14, 2009 7:13PM CST
Wow! Nebraska is truly the mecca of college football & a special place when you have a coaching great that serves as AD and is still enthusiastically involved (but not overbearing) in the football program. Gosh..i'm almost a little choked up knowing how close that staff actually is! Really proud of our guys for hanging tough and finding a way. It hasn't always been pretty and i'm sure it won't be the rest of the way this year, but they keep finding a way to put "Ws" in the column and that's all that matters. Gotta love those Huskers. Gotta love Nebraska!

Listening to the locker room show, this is one confident bunch right now. Gotta harness that energy and smack KSU with a statement game next Saturday. GBR!

Posted by: cuddyshack67 on November 14, 2009 7:19PM CST
Osborne has forgotten more football than the entire Callasham playbook could hold. Probably more than the current staff COMBINED.

I got hair rising on the back of my neck at the thought that Osborne's insight could prove to be instrumental in righting the war-torn ship that is this year's version of the Husker offense.

Kudos to Watson if, in fact, he can feel unthreatened and secure enough in his own skin to seek/use the input of a coaching legend. Truth be told, it is a bit surprising given what I suspected to be Watson's thin-skin replies to the arm-chair criticism he has faced throughout his career as Nebraska's OC.

Hall of Fame AD who was offensive genius. Not a bad place to go for advice with a struggling O.

Just for the record Zac played really well today, 13-21 no ints and a few well placed runs. Nothingn special but efficient.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on November 14, 2009 7:42PM CST
You should always listen to the Boss.

Posted by: ChrisHa3 on November 14, 2009 7:50PM CST
Just knowing that Watson is open to suggestions from T.O. makes me like him even more.

I got the impression that Callahan and Co. would have never done that. They always seemed to think they knew it all.

And I'm very excited about the fact that T.O. is getting involved and doing it in a laid back sort of way.

It's good to have Watson and the different perspective he brings working day in and day out on the offense and then to have the wise old coach observing and offering suggestions.

This is a very good sign for the future.

Let's keep Watson ... (just ditch Barney Cotton, IMO).

Well, I just got back from a watch party, and I made the mistake (again) of checking out the Live Game blog. I'm still reading some of it (for who knows what reason).

I just find it so hilarious when all the petulant cry babies throw fits when the offense doesn't call/execute every play with perfection. Or they pack it in and give up on the team when the other team scores for the first time (with 2/3rds of a game to play). Or even after a win, they can see their way back on here and incessantly b!tch about all the things the offense "could've done better".

I'm sure these are all the same people who blame losses on the offense and can't live without Green as the starter. Yet, would they have blamed this game on the D had we lost? I doubt it, even though they played a far less than stellar game today.

We won for f's sake. Get over yourselves.

The team didn't live up to your perfect, high expectations. These are college kids, playing a game. I hope you don't all hold yourselves to these same standards, as I'm sure you'd probably fall entirely short and end up just hating your lives.

Sure this blog is all about venting and conversing with fellow fans and whatnot. I firmly believe anyone can say whatever and act like an idiot all they want. But man, some people on here need a reality check.

7-3. GBR.

Personally, I feel better knowing that a dialog with TO is under way.

You are never too old or too good to learn from a master. Props to Wats for taking a bit of advice and making it his own. The fans appreciate it and so do your players, because it demonstrates that it's about winning, not about egos.

I knew that play was of an Osborne influence, didn't know how it came to be a part of the O, but recognized it as soon as it was ran.

And thanks for making the FB relevant again Wats, you had me worried there a bit with all those plays of Zak under center and a single back set..but somehow my voice was heard and you ran a lead back set, not always out of the I, but a lead back set and it was responsible for 3 TD's and huge running plays.

Roy loves to run behind a FB, he's just loving it Wats...that has to be more than obvious now.

Viva la Fullback!!

The FB is relevant at NE again thank you very much.

It cannot be denied any longer.

And thanks for the heavy dose of play action in the first half, I've been beating that into your skull for weeks Wats...nicely done man, nicely done.

Still lots work to do, but that's a start.

Woohooo!!

Is this the happy blog,
listen to one fan rant about how there were not happy with the win. The line stunk, the Lee stunk and Wats stunk.
I watched a decent game where we prevailed in the end.

I would like to enjoy this one for a few more hours.

OU 42 to 10 at halftime.....wow

I was hoping you'd still be on here. I saw your comments on the game blog. We're on the same wavelength brotha.

It's too bad you didn't get to watch it. I thought the game was a lot of fun. Unfortunately there are fun-haters everywhere.

Posted by: rluben on November 14, 2009 8:07PM CST
Zak finally ran the ball with some decisiveness and authority, made a decision and went after it, props to you Zak, good on you man. And that 2 point conversion was brilliantly executed on your part Zak.

Great job doing more than just managing the game dude...that's more along the lines of what we were expecting you were capable of.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on November 14, 2009 8:09PM CST
I actually thought the defense played well today....maybe I'm wrong....last week they played lights out....that can't happen every week! The D was getting a lot of undeserved hate early on....KU is a good offense when they are in rythmn and they were today....great win by the Husker TEAM, very good coaching IMO also....but I am just an observer

Posted by: NishBigRed on November 14, 2009 8:12PM CST
Low,
I would have like to have seen more presure on Reesing but it was a decent effort.
What was good to see is the offense could pick up some slack when the D wasn't playing lights out

It was nice to see the Huskers not shoot themselves in the foot with pentalties

I haven't read the game blog yet, but I'm sure there was some intersting post. I should go back and see how many stated Wats needed to be fired. lol

Posted by: Sabado Gigante on November 14, 2009 8:14PM CST
Low..

Totally. The D played well enough to win against a fairly decent offense. Just like last week when the offense played well enough to win against a damn good defense.

The bottom line is that they were both TEAM WINS regardless of which units did or did not play up to their full potential.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on November 14, 2009 8:14PM CST
Nish

No sense in reading it sounds like you already have!

was it my imaginagine or was the D line playing stick and hold? I only seen a couple of plays but it appeared they were in a read and react mode

Posted by: rluben on November 14, 2009 8:16PM CST
Sometimes you just have to give props to the opponent.

Obviously we have a great D, and K's line had a great game plan and did what they had to do to limit our front 4's impact on the outcome.

I'm not going to dog our D on that one, but instead give some props to KS for having a solid game plan to nullify our front 4 to some extent...Reesing felt some pressure at times and made some bad throws as a result.

Secondary stepped up I thought against a better than decent receiving corps.

Fun game to watch I thought.

Posted by: Gofor2 on November 14, 2009 8:20PM CST
Thanks coach Watson for getting the TO mind set.

What did the former coach say about TO, some geezer put down deal.

When TO was hired as AD, I remember a posters comment about how he should stay out of the way.

He stays out of the way alright, but if your smart enough to listen to his subtle message then you'll know what a master has say and if your wise you listen to every word.

My vote is Helu for Sport Center. Great runs by that kid.

Nice run on the 4th quarter kick return by Niles.

I bet Bo would like to put a Hurting on K-State and Coach Synder.

I don't think Bo is into that, he wants a game played by his team that shows improvement from today and leads to a victory. He'll leave all that other stuff to the fans....

I may watch the replay of the game on 360 so I can see if it looks as good as it sounded

I thought the pooch kick after KU went up 17-16 was, well to be blount, DUMB! Why would they do that? Obviously they didn't want to kick it to Paul, but they did anyway. Why not kick it hard and low on the ground and let it bounce around awhile to someone other than Paul. KU really blew that one.

Or bring the off guard and TE on a pull to the play side if you insist on running a no lead back set play off tackle.

Hate that play ran straight up with no support blocking in place. HATE IT.

Unless it's used to set something else up later that is.

Plus Synder never got the fact that when you are winning or losing big you play backup players. You would think a smart coach would understand the advantage of getting younger players experience. I think it was his JUCO try to win now and don't worry about next year attitude.

GO BIG RED!!!

Posted by: NishBigRed on November 14, 2009 8:46PM CST
I remember seeing a piece on Synder and Stoops and the differences between the two. Synder is a workaholic and would demand long hours from his coaches. Stoops had alot of family events for the coaches and the families.

From what I understand Stoops is a Synder disciple and so much more.

Posted by: Robka on November 14, 2009 8:50PM CST
Does anyone remember when TO had pulled all starters in a KSU blowout and Snyder refused to do the same. When the game got back to a 3 TD game. TO got pissed and put Ahman Green in the boys back in to shove it down Snyders throat. Syder not playing backups against Bo's D in his only victory in Lincoln led to Bo getting in his face after the game. I loved it.

The AMAZING 2009 SEASON

The Big 12 North has been quite a ride so far this year. Who would have thought that Iowa State would be bowl eligible by mid November? Or that KU would be in last place, and have to beat either Texas or Missouri to even be bowl eligible? Or that the Huskers would be fighting K-State for the Big 12 North title? Or that if K-State does not beat the Huskers, they would not be bowl eligible either. Or that Colorado would not be bowl eligible even if they did beat the Huskers?

Snyder is the person who thought of scheduling 4 cupcakes to pad his overall record. Now everyone does it. It has runied the first 4 weeks of the college season, IMHO. Snyder seems a little more low key this time around, but I know Bo wants to see us kick his butt. KSU will be a juco haven as long as he is there, and few good prospects will want to go to KSU with a coach of his age at the helm. It's not like KSU is Penn State, Florida State or a big time program.

Hey Robka, that incident back in 2003 with Snyder and Bo was the first thing that popped into my head once i started thinking about the NEB KSU game next week. I'm pretty sure Bo's got that in the back of his mind and is ready to set things square if you know what i mean. Like i've said before, this is the same KSU team that lost to Louisiana Lafayette and the same Louisiana Lafayette team that got beat 55 - 0 to us. Let me tell you, we can do the same to KSU and Bo wants too. Everything is against KSU in this one. A night game at Lincoln. The crowd is gonna be loud for this one too.

I thought KS did a pretty good job of doubling and tripling on Suh and handling Crick and the ends without leaving huge lanes for backers to fill. Pretty nice job by them, good coaching and scheming I thought. Kept things kinda bunched up, then Reesing used his mobility to make plays.

Glad our O came to play and executed pretty well compared to lately.

Posted by: rluben on November 14, 2009 9:10PM CST
Bo's going to fart in Bill's GenerAL DIreCTIon.

Reesing was quite impressive in running and avoidng pressure...part of that was their scheme to not set him inthe pocket only. Their receivers were great as expected. I wasn't on the game thread in the first half. Did the "whose fault was the pitch?" have a part 2? LOL

Lee still didn't look like a guy who is a "natural" runner, but he ran with much more confidence and decisiveness. I thought he was very effective today.

All that stuff is for us fans. If coaches held grudges the would have a prettymiserbale existence IMO.

Silicon,
Where you been?
Haven't seen you posting in a few.

Posted by: Gofor2 on November 14, 2009 9:13PM CST
PT, you going to the KSU game?

Posted by: Silicon Valley Husker on November 14, 2009 9:14PM CST
Pitt looks like they are about to go up 20-3 on ND. I can't imagine what Stanford is going to do to them. (When was the last time anyone said that?)

G42...

Ahhh! I still have no idea! Haha!

Wikipedia here I come.

Posted by: huskers4_eva on November 14, 2009 9:15PM CST
Wrong PT. Snyder is not gonna be at KSU forever, so Bo knows he needs to beat him silly next week or he might not get a chance.

A Monte Python in Search of the Holy Grail reference...classic rluben, just classic.

Posted by: Albino on November 14, 2009 9:15PM CST
I like to learn from this august assembly. What did Kansas do to make our D so much less effective. The announcers said they moved the pocket around and, obviously, Reesing has a fine arm. But what did they do in order to hold off our front four as well as they did?

Thanks.

Silcon,
You profile is so deeply secured I can't send you a message even though your on my buddy list. Whats the deal with that?

ahh GBR caught it, good one.

Busy week at work Nish....layoffs were Thursday. Thankfully, I didn't have to participate

Posted by: Sabado Gigante on November 14, 2009 9:17PM CST
Ewwww.

Wikipedia says that the "PE" Robka has is far less than awesome.

I was sure (thus didn't include it on my list) that Robka was not layed-up from a Prostate Exam. I think the only thing that needs recovery in that situation, is one's pride.

Posted by: Silicon Valley Husker on November 14, 2009 9:21PM CST
Not sure....only set up the default.

Sabado...did Bo motorboat Nikki?

I'm still getting over my Navy boys being called dirty and unclassy by that ND assistant. He's right...its just a damn shame we beat them for the second time straight in South Bend.

PS....Bill Snyder...his mother was a hamster and his father smelt of elderberries.

Posted by: rluben on November 14, 2009 9:22PM CST
Looked like to me they kept things bunched up in the middle Albino, sometimes throwing 3 dudes on Suh just playing pinball with him.

I'd have to watch replays to see how they handled everyone else so effectively too, but to me they just got in folks way and at the same time kept things clogged in between the tackles and most the time we didn't bring extra bodies, especially in the spread sets.

The Todd moved around a bit and was sort of effective.

Posted by: PT Husker on November 14, 2009 9:23PM CST
Gofor2, Yes I am going to K State. R. U.

I have rationalized the trip lke this. I did not go to ISU or TT. I went to OU. They need me.

Posted by: Gofor2 on November 14, 2009 9:23PM CST
SB LOL
It can be fatal though, but Robka is Husker iron.

Nite all, back to work, we're headed in the right direction.
GBR!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: GBR in Texas on November 14, 2009 9:23PM CST
Albino, in a nutshell, they double Suh (and held) all day and most of the day were able to get the DE's sealed inside on their rush which allowed Reesing to roam outside the pocket. We were only rushing the front 4 the vast majority of the game but in the first and 4th when we needed pressure we brought a LBer and a corner or safety. That was very effective when it was called, which was only a few times.

Posted by: Sabado Gigante on November 14, 2009 9:23PM CST
I'm glad we'll never have to face Kerry Meier again. That kid is pretty clutch for playing on the opposite end of the battery than he originally intended.

Posted by: rluben on November 14, 2009 9:24PM CST
In other words, they handled their biznezz up front and you have to give them props for that.

Posted by: NishBigRed on November 14, 2009 9:25PM CST
I think it was good the defense was challenged. Lets them know they can't take a game off.

I'm sure on the sidelines the Offense was saying we will pick up some of the slack.
It was a step closer a all round decent game, both sides of the ball.

Posted by: rluben on November 14, 2009 9:25PM CST
Their splits seemed to be tighter than what I recall they usually run, but that could be my imagination too.

Nah. Bo is crashing the party. He's trying to keep all the 6-yr old LITR users from seeing that naughty man put his face in that lady's chest area.

The LITR has standards ya know.

Posted by: PT Husker on November 14, 2009 9:29PM CST
That was a great football game. It was really enjoyable to watch. Mangino is a good coach and so is Bo. Both teams exploited each other at times. Not sure who would win next time.

Fortunately there is no next time until next year.

OU is proving a point tonight 65-10 with 8 min left in the game.

Posted by: PT Husker on November 14, 2009 9:32PM CST
When you look back it was basicly two bad plays on the drive after they took the lead that was the difference. The pooch kick and the face mask when we were stopped. Ball game.

Posted by: Sabado Gigante on November 14, 2009 9:33PM CST
PT...

Right on! I thought it was a great game to watch. I honestly had a blast.

Posted by: NishBigRed on November 14, 2009 9:33PM CST
Low,
Whats it like to drive a Peace Keeper?

So for one week I would assume there will be no discussion who should start at QB?

Posted by: Silicon Valley Husker on November 14, 2009 9:33PM CST
yeah, "the Todd" burned us on numerous runs and scrambles. Tough guy. Seemed like we penetrated but they frequently kept contact on our D lineman and Reesign manuevered well to keep out of their way.

Props to Niles for 244 total yards.

Posted by: NishBigRed on November 14, 2009 9:35PM CST
I think Mangino did a heck of a job coming up with a game plan.

I guess he stayed away from the buffets for a week or two.

Posted by: flimflamfan on November 14, 2009 9:36PM CST
Wow.
So that was one that Osborne pulled out of the drawer...
I remember thinking- "whoa, that's an aggresive formation," it didn't occur to me that it wasn't from this offense, which is supposed to do everything.
But of course, it was from the Coach.

The fascinating thing about the team, right now, is it's difficult project out how segments of it will do, from one week to the next.
I'd like to think that the way Helu and Robinson closed things out on the last drive, when Kansas desperately needed the stop, will carryover and Nebraska can build on it.
In this case, maybe it will.
It was great way to finish though. Just fantastic!

I think the lack of up front pressure had to do with the Pelini brothers keeping gap discipline. But also, last week's game was about the most intensely emotional and physical they'll play again, so...

Coming off Okie, then playing prideful Kansas on Senior Day.
The team kept focus, nothing chippy and they weren't flat. Business like.

I thought Pelini was going to bust something he'd need later, after the tripping call.

C'mon dude. You know better. Just as several coaches will still have real estate signs show up in front of their houses.

Posted by: rluben on November 14, 2009 9:38PM CST
K Sabado, then it wasn't my imagination, they were tighter than usual and it was pretty darn effective.

I agree with GBRinTX, they were forcing (sealing) our ends and getting them clogged up in the middle...nice game plan by them and it worked fairly well 'cept when Bo or Carl dialed up some heat on Occasion.

Reesing was lucky that a couple of those balls he threw up for grabs under pressure inbounds weren't picked.

Posted by: Silicon Valley Husker on November 14, 2009 9:38PM CST
Nish....well Bones on the game thread will keep it going.....as I said during the game thread, it just seems like a hollow win without being able to share it with BRG. :)

Posted by: Islander/Husker on November 14, 2009 9:40PM CST
Sabado you are right Meier is a great player and has had a great career with Kansas. Also glad the Reesing is done too.

If you want to know how far we have come in two years, in 2007 KU put up 70 plus, this yeaer 16. I think under Bo those days are way behind us.

no 7.62, 203s?
Prefer inside of a Corwn Vick or Caprice. Luminas later. Oh yeah and th K cars in the begining.

Man did Bo get in Barney's ares. Not so sure you can blame a coach for a kid doing a leg whipping.

Brian:

Snyder did not invent the cupcake schedule. One the the first was HOF coach Gil Dobie of Washington. He went undefeated for nine straight years by scheduling about half of his games against high schools, sailors from US Navy ships in port and against tiny colleges like Whitman and Whitworth.

The cupcake tradition was carried on by another HOFer, Knute Rockne. He padded his schedule with annual games against Kalamazoo (5), Lombard (3), and Drake (5). Other tigers that he played included Case Tech, Wabash (2), Mount Union, Morningside, Valparaiso, DePauw (2), Butler (2), Beloit (2), Coe and Loyola (Louisiana). Needless to say, he never came remotely close to losing any of these games. His most challenging games came against Nebraska. After losing three out of four against the Huskers, Rockne dropped them from his schedule for "not showing proper respect."

So remember Old Bill did not invent this, and the Huskers have joined the act by making fans pay full price for games against Western Illinois, Maine, Nicholls State, bottom feeders from the WAC and CUSA plus a bunch of Sunbelt teams.

In fact Bill may very well get his punishment this year if he loses to the Huskers. His two victories over lower division teams and the loss to Louisiana-Lafayette, means that he would have only five bowl-qualifying wins. So lose to the Huskers and no bowl for Bill. On the other hand if he beats the Huskers, he gets to roll the dice for shot at the big money BCS bowls. So for Bill, next Saturday, it's all or nothing.

Later on PT.

Helu in that great run on third down with about 3 minuets left in the third quarter, showed his football smarts by staying in bounds, taking the ball towards the middle of the field, then when he was about to be tackled double armed the ball to make sure he did not fumble. It was an incredible run and well blocked by the way.

Posted by: Robka on November 14, 2009 9:52PM CST
I/H I totally agree you can tell Helu is still favoring that shoulder a little so he did the smart thing and went down. He is a gutsy great RB.

GO BIG HELU!!!

RL....I figured him more for daisies, although they aren't hollow

Posted by: rluben on November 14, 2009 9:57PM CST
Yeah it was good run, great blocking but the clock was going to stop to move the chains anyways....looked to me like he had some more yards to be got had he wanted them, but I wasn't complaining.

Kept the chains moving and the drive sustained and that's all that really mattered in that situation...well that and a FB sprung him.

Posted by: Sabado Gigante on November 14, 2009 10:00PM CST
I think Roy did the smart thing in going down. That way the 3 guys surrounding him had no way to stand him up and rip at the ball.

I thought he had some open field down the sidelines, but I may have imagined it and missed a defender in his path...us FB's don't see defenders until we run them over like a speed bump.

What did you guys think of Mangino running the two fake plays, one the kick off and the reverse? Don't think you can run that crap against this D.

The Punt and Kick off coverage has come along ways as well.

I wonder how many Huskers fans made it to the game. Didn't see alot of red in the stands.

Posted by: BrianRi on November 14, 2009 11:29PM CST
I'd take Osborne as OC any day. Need to get back to some 6'2 linemen and blow some people off the ball. Zone blocking pays off 1 out ofevery 10 it seems. Pulling gaurds and tackles, now that's football.

Posted by: UK Husker on November 15, 2009 5:48AM CST
I am still not convinced about Watson, but at least he knows how to take some advice.

Here is some, start running the ball and teach the line how to pancake a few people.

Posted by: Big Wave Dave on November 15, 2009 9:31AM CST
Give wats cuddoes for listening and taking the advice....not many would. We know that Callahan did not.
