Osborne's innovation
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on July 14, 2010 at 2:42PM CST
There was an interesting mention of Tom Osborne in the Sports Illustrated story I read the other night.

It was a tribute story of sorts to Don Coryell, the football coach who was the first to win more than 100 games at the college and professional levels.

Coryell, who died just a couple weeks ago, was known for his offensive genius. He was once called the "godfather of today's passing game" by Mike Martz.

Well, late in the story (page 6 of 7), it talks about one of Coryell's assistants, Joe Gibbs, who installed Coryell's offense when he became the coach of the Washington Redskins.

Gibbs had plenty of Air Coryell in his offense. But the Redskins probably became best known for their offensive line during the 80s. When you think of those Redskins, you think of the Hogs, the power running game and the counter plays that came with it.

But where did Gibbs get the Counter Trey from? You guessed it. T.O.

An excerpt from the SI story:

The Counter Trey, among the most dominant plays in the game's history, sprang from an unlikely source. "The whole counter started when we saw some film on Nebraska in the early '80s," says Gibbs. "Tom Osborne was doing some really innovative things with his line up front, and we were watching it and thought, God, that's good stuff. So we stole it. We had no pride whatsoever, and really, nobody does in this game. We all steal things."

Indeed, one of the best compliments to a coach, be your name Coryell or Osborne, is when people start stealing your ideas.

MileHi - You've seen the Wildcat popping up in the NFL recently, no?

Posted by: GBR in Texas on July 14, 2010 3:31PM CST
Yep, they do MileHi. Innovations in the game are not limted to the pro game. There are times when they want to see what, or how, plays are being run and it's not limited to certain levels of football. High school coaches steal from college coaches and visa versa. Many offenses run today are hybrids, or compilations of material from several different offensive minds formed into something that suits their talents. Happens every day.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on July 14, 2010 3:33PM CST
CBH...I completely agree. That said, it's not much fun when you play a former colleague that uses your stuff...and beats you with it.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on July 14, 2010 3:37PM CST
Right OTB. And the Wildcat is nothing more than a spinoff of the old 'single wing'.

Posted by: Inbread on July 14, 2010 3:43PM CST
nice job TO, you helped the Redskins (who I hate) become good. ugh. A quandry here. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? I know something that is definitely bad, thats an MIP ticket. Right Niles?

If I'm seriously thinking of running the "Wildcat".There is nobody better looking over your shoulder than T.O

Everybody copies the winner.

My high school's starting 11 on defense get to wear black shirts in practice.

We call them The Blackshirts.

No joke, and I had nothing to do with it. The Varsity DC is an Iowa boy and a big fan of Nebraska's defensive philosophy, going back to the 70's

Posted by: PT Husker on July 14, 2010 4:11PM CST
While we all focus on the great running back what did Gibbs steal? the line blocking.

It all starts up front.

GBR Tex,

I liked the Hogs, and a former KU RB John Riggins, especially? Riggins, was the prelude to the coming of Bosworth to OU, a character of huge proportions, as I learned of the histories of FB, as I loved studying my sports past. I was always drawn to the renegade or rebel types, for wanting to know more about their exploits?

Riggins ran behind the great Oline, the Hogs, and he was big and strong and fast, for a white RB. But it was his quirks, that I enjoyed reading about. He was at some high gala event in formal wear and Sandra Day O'Connor was there also. Somehow in the course of events, he laid down on the floor and told Ms. O'Connor, distinguished Supreme Court judge, to lighten up baby!

Another story I read, was Joe Theisman said Riggins set out a whole season over contract disputes, and went fishing mainly at Tuttle Creek reservoir, the whole season sporting his mohawk? Now that takes some gumption or conviction, to elect to sit out for a entire season in the prime of a RB's pro career? Not that long in longevity and always a concern that a younger RB will replace you at anytime?

So Riggins like Butkus and Conrad Dobler a guard with Cardinals, and so many others went to the beat of a different drum? I patterned some of those behaviors for my HS play in FB, as it made it more fun for interaction with opponents, and even my own coaches?

As for copying TO, good choice for those Skins?

Who didn't already know that Dr. Tom was (is?) the best college football coach ever?

And thanks for the Scott Criss walk-on story, Brian. Good stuff. I love the 0-line walk-ons that wind up "bringin' the pain" to opponents.

Is it August yet? I can't wait for 2010 Big Red football and some more of that Blackshirt DEFENSE. And, of course, the offense will give all Big Red fans plenty to talk/debate/argue about......and that's always fun.

GO BIG RED FAREWELL TO THE TEXAS 10 TOUR!

I'd put my money on Dr. Tom being the best college football coach ever. He brought so much more to the table than his coaching abilities and people realize it.

Just watching the live broadcast of the Big XII (aftermath) meeting in Lincoln showed me a whole other side of him. He made his points and more without ever shouting or making a spectacle of himself.

Nowadays, it's the Sabans, Kiffens, and others who make the megabucks and receive all the glitz and glory. None of them could qualify to be Tom Osborne's water boy.

Coach, GBRTX, a small town in OK, Blackwell, their HS used to run the single wing offense?

It is different, so gave their opponents fits to defense, as you work out of a long snap and more of a shotgun type offense, with spinner options of FB,and flanker in mothion crossing, so deception to who has the ball types of concepts. More time to execute passing with deep set formations. So compensates somewhat for lack of prowess for OLine, etc.?

They printed up shirts to buy at games, for parents and fans of the team, kind of cool?
On the front side "Single Wing Football, A Blast From The Past"
On back side "The Dinosaur Lives, Single Wing Football"

This was awhile back, not sure they use this formation anymore, but I attended their game in the past, and this was what was going on?

In a post-game interview, I remember TO saying that they KNEW that they would probably score on RUNNING play on the first play of a 90's game in Boulder. They did.

Some of us geezers miss tight ends and fullbacks running for pay dirt. To some, the NU offense was boring, but it created some elements of surprise that left many a defense "counting their change".

Alternative fuel sources are in the works for the coming future and may not be as far off with advancing technology as we think? Shanghai Expo is all about greening and low carb fuels etc. Kind of cool to see the possibilities? Stock in future companies of those inclinations and capital for marketing will make the ones investing very happy campers someday!

Denver Bob- Was that the long run by Ahman Green?

With defenses recruiting lighter and faster players to combat the spread. Don't you think it's about time to bring back power football and knock the defense on their behinds.

Posted by: Ray in Bellevue on July 14, 2010 7:14PM CST
One would think that if the pros can adopt T.O. running concepts, Watson would be able to do likewise. But no, he persists in his WCO-like schemes until the last fan has left. What will happen this Fall without a proven QB? Does anyone really want to go through another 112th worst offense in the country season?

Can anyone imagine a play in which the OL initially appears to be blocking one way, while the RB goes the opposite way behind pulling linemen? Misdirection? Naw, the mentor is in the house, but the OC won't take the time to learn something from the master of proven offenses. What a crying shame.

Guten Abend, Ray. Gehe gross rot!! :D

Posted by: Wrestler on July 14, 2010 7:52PM CST
Ray, 112? My senior year in HS, we got all the way to semis in state, before losing to eventual winner in a close one on defense? So my HS team on a micro level, alot like NU last year, except our offense maybe more anemic than NU's, if you can imagine? But our D, we had 5 players get high post honors, and the other 6 weren't bad? None on offense got recognized, so a very one sided team, kind of like NU last season?

I used to tease our coaches and say let's when we get the ball, just quick kick right back to our opponents and try to beat them on the TO game? Coaches liked my play on the field but hated my antics off? And I was a LBer and when chasing an opponent to our sideline, our coaches would scatter, like you wouldn't believe as they always feared my missing the player and hitting them?

So understand your frustrations, and I do believe that Watts will have to produce moreso this season, or pressure for Coach Bo to reconsider his options, that's why I see the components for healthy QB competition, in a earned fashion of performance and Oline maturing and a more balanced attack, using the good stable of RB's that the Huskers have? I think this will correlate into success for the season to come?

GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

Have to run for my morning workout, with the beast!

Stewing about the rumor about Lee's elbow. Don't really care who the QB is, I just want however it is to win the job against all comers, not be handed the job by default.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on July 14, 2010 9:46PM CST
Too bad about the chick flick...it appears you survived. I guess my feelings are very similar, but I do believe Green having a year of college experience and a year of college confidence would have to be a force to be reckoned with.

I still think he is a loose cannon but you are right he coulde improve a bunch from last year.

Lots of buzz about Martinez. Can't see Bo going with a rook however.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on July 14, 2010 9:56PM CST
You could be right about the loose cannon in his youth but there is a huge upside. I don't see Bo doing that either. Very stressful on a coach going with the young and unproven...I guess that describes Green as well though.

Posted by: PT Husker on July 14, 2010 10:01PM CST
We agree Lee as well. Not a spectacular athlete but a good game manager. If healthy he won't lose many games. Not sure if he will put a team on his back and win one however.

Actually the innovation in football flows from the college coaches to the NFL and always has. For example, Dutch Meyer at TCU introduced the modern Spread to the college ranks when he blew out the Huskers in Lincoln in September 1951. A decade later Red Hickey reinvented it with the 49ers and renamed it "The Shotgun." Red Blaik at Army taught his assistants Vince Lombardi and Sid Gillman his system of coaching and they used it to revolutionize pro football. In 2003, Urban Meyer at Utah brought back the Spread and put in a big, bruising TE to run (and sometimes to pass) in the red zone. Then nearly everyone in the college and pro ranks put in their Wildcat, Wild Hog, etc.

Mouse Davis at Portland State put in his Run and Shoot offense featuring QB June Jones. Jones then took it to the NFL and back to the college ranks at Hawaii and SMU. Chris Petersen at Boise State started using "Play Packages" that Mack Brown, Bob Stoops, are now putting into place. It should hit the NFL in another year or so.

An of course Don Coryell took his system from San Diego State to the NFL and his followers have had great success as the article pointed out. Unfortunately the NFL never had the guts to use the Wishbone (Triple Option) or Jack Mildren and Eric Crouch could have been big NFL stars.

PT,

The line blocking scheme upfront AND it's execution are THE most important part of the play without a doubt.

The previous staff had what I refer to as a soft philosophy about both the scheme and the execution of said scheme.

I have no tangible proof or film to break down for you, and say this is this or that was that...it's more of the shock and awe factor from memory.

I can't really EVER recall going "damn, did you see that lineman destroy that backer" or whoever ONCE ever during the Callahan years.

To me it seemed like they didn't even function as a unit within a unit, like they didn't even have line calls or make adjustments just prior to the snap of who was going to man up on who based on who lined up over them or didn't line up over them on the D side.

Just mindless you go to this spot and hope he goes there too mind numbing boring get in his way hopefully if you are lucky scheming.

That's what it looked like to me all the time especially on a running play.

It looked like the go to this spot and hope you get in the defenders way fora half second scheme.

It's be real hard to convince me otherwise...I know what I was watching time after boring ineffective time.

Out linemen were short handed last year and banged up, but they were aggressive and getting to second and third levels too.

That will be 3 times better this year than last year in both execution and effectiveness.

Posted by: NishBigRed on July 14, 2010 10:29PM CST
Mountain man,

My high school ran ran the wishbone in Highs school. We always had two back who rushed for over a 1,000 yards, sometimes the QB did.
Our coach was such Masochistic there where times when we played a hard nosed defense that he would run the fullback 30-40 times a game just to prove his point.

Years latter I asked our coach why the wishbone didn't work in the NFL.

He stated there was too much speed on defense. The defensive linemen were to good of athletes.
It has been tried several times.
Randie Cunningham never ran the wishbone but with the Eagles he often looked to run first.
Kordle Stewart was a feeble attempt at using a good athlete that was suppose to be able to do something with his feet as well.
Michale Vick might be the best athlete every to play QB, but with his 50 cent brain will never amount to much

Here's an observation,
On the espn blogs, there's been a lot of chatter about the Bevo game.

On the "life" we seem to be talking about the big picture. We've got a lot to focus on as we go big time again. Texas will be fun and I suspect a deeply satisfying game for the Huskers, but that's just a bump in the road compared to where we've been before and are headed again.

Jerry Jones almost drove me away from the NFL for good when he first took over. I am a loyal fan of the team, though. Just started watching the NFL again the last few years.

You are also correct about taking care of the teams we should beat like Iowa State. Can't play down to that level. Need to step on 'em and twist.

Posted by: NishBigRed on July 14, 2010 10:46PM CST
Gofor2,
I wasn't so bad that we lost to Iowa St. It was the way we lost to them.

Iowa St. was starting a walk on Frosh or something like that.
The star of the defense that day was a walk on LB for the Cyclones.
We couldn't get out our own way that game.

One thing I have to give Bo, his teams always improve as the seasons progress.

1995 Orange Bowl against Miami (FL), the last one played in that stadium. 2 point conversion from Frazier to Eric Alford (following a TD run from Corey Schlesinger) tied the game up at 17.

Bowl games during Tommie Frazier's career at NU:

1993 Orange Bowl -- Nebraska lost 27-14 to FSU. Still too much speed and talent for Nebraska (and a true freshman QB) to handle.

1994 Orange Bowl -- Nebraska lost 18-16 to FSU. Ironically, wide left (on the 45 yard FG attempt on the game's last play) saved 17.5 point favorite FSU this time. Frazier was the game's MVP and outplayed Heisman Trophy winner (and future Knick bricklayer, er, PG) Charlie Ward. BTW, I still haven't seen the clipping call that negated a punt return touchdown by (if memory serves) NU's Corey Dixon. FSU was really, really lucky to "win" that game. The Huskers were the better team that night. FYI, all Husker fans should remember the 1 second put back on the game clock by the officials that allowed NU to attempt a 45 yard FG on the game's final play. FSU Coach Bobby Bowden had already been doused by Gatorade and the game clock showed 0:00 before the officials conferred and added 1 second back to the game clock. Alas, all for naught...

1995 Orange Bowl -- #1 Nebraska beat # 3 Miami 24-17, with Frazier, Cory Schlesigner, and the big OL leading a 4th Quarter comeback. Miami had some serious talent on its roster, especially on defense including Ray Lewis and Warren Sapp. Rohan Marley (Bob's kid) and Dwaye "The Rock" Johnson were also on the 'Canes.

1996 Fiesta Bowl -- #1 Nebraska beat #2 Florida 62-24. Was it really almost 15 years ago? The Gators were 12-0 coming into the game but were thoroughly outclassed by NU.

Completely off topic, but did anyone see the Miami Football 30/30 on HBO?

I was mad all day at the glorification of the crap that went down in the 80's at Miami. Yes they changed college football, but for the better? I think not. We should have a blog topic on that.

Posted by: boom.roasted on July 15, 2010 1:58AM CST
I remember the two point conversion Frazier made against Miami. On the same field that Gill missed it against the same team.

"He can't throw! He can't throw!... It's tied."

Chris Collinsworth should do more college football games. His color commentary for that game was the best I've ever heard.

Posted by: boom.roasted on July 15, 2010 2:05AM CST
"Tom Osborne, a man of great faith. He says everyone has faith in something. Some have faith in money or winning or prestige, and he says sure it hurts to lose, but winning or losing is not the most important thing, and some people think 'I don't care because I have that attitude - I do care. I just have my priorities in line.'"

--- Collinsworth coming back from commercial before the winning drive for Osborne's first national championship. It's like a friggin movie.

Lawrence:

I knew ESPN had their 30 for 30 one on Miami football, is that the one you were talking about? I watched that one and as for a human interest piece it was interesting but I agree, it was glorifying a Miami program that really was trying to recruit thugs and it made them look like the victim. In a way it was sort of surprising that there was all this talent in Florida and a school like Miami just wasn't getting them to their school.

On another note, I was always a big Brook homer (even though I was like 7) but how badass is it that he played with a collapsed lung against Wyoming (?). I was able to meet him quite a few times through different school things and even Pheasants Forever one time since he was a big hunter. A life tragically cut short.

Sheesh wolverine,

You appear a bit upset. Perhaps winning a couple of games this year may brighten your spirits. 3 and 9 and 5 and 7 is not good.

As far as 2011, you best hope the scheduling Gods do not put the corn on your schedule.

WOM(en),

I can feel the envy you must have of NU oozing out of your comments. I sense the fear you have for the big red storm gathering in the west, just waiting to lay waste to the big 11.

I see your picture, is a waterfall. It must be all of the tears being cried, because of the impending big red storm that is coming and you can't do anything to stop it.

GBR!

Is the Wolverine indiginous to Michigan or did you steal the Nic?.

Kind of a smelly, carrion eating, pest in its Native habitat. Grumpy devil as well. Needs lots of extra practice from what we hear.

Charger, He is. By nature they are quite anti social Preferring to stay by themselves with little company. Quick to anger if bothered. Quite dangerous if cornered.

Unlike the current version of the football team.

Now that is some third-rate trolling right there. Too stupid to be genuine. Michigan fans aren't dumb, and that criticism of Nebraska and TO is some seriously weak tea. The boards for the Creighton Bluejays must be really, really slow.

Charger. It has been slow. the wife has been down in the back so fishing has been very litte. One two day trip to south dakota about catches it.

N. at least he provides a little comic relief once in a while.

wolverineofmich. You appear to have a severe case of cortical atrophy. I thought that the Big 10 was a grouping of higher learning institutions. By the way, didn't Nebraska and Michigan play in a bowl game about 5 years ago, or have you forgotten the score?

All coaches "steal" concepts or plays.

Osborne admitted "stealing" a trick play or two from films of a high school games.

Joe Gibbs "stole" some concepts watching film of Nebraska.

Callahan "stole" a trick play from a movie he went to called "The Longest Yard".

Just by looking at where those coaches went to "steal" plays and concepts, can anyone guess which two of those coaches have the best records?
