Osborne prefers 'traditional' uniforms
Posted by: Steve Sipple on January 13, 2012 at 1:43PM CST

During the course of discussing a variety of issues Friday with Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne, I brought up a hot-button question among Nebraska football fans:

Do you think you'll ever make drastic uniform changes, as so many other programs have done on a semi-regular basis?

"I think many of these clothing companies would appreciate it if you would do something unusual or bizarre or change up because it calls attention -- I guess -- to their brand," Osborne said. "Personally, I don't see where it adds a lot of value if people think the uniforms are really outlandish. Apparently there is a value to the companies. But we've always been fairly traditional here."

Don't expect that to change when it comes to Husker football uniforms, as long as Osborne is running the shop.

"Maybe that has to do with longstanding traditions. But it also maybe has to do with my age," he said.

The 74-year-old Osborne chuckled.

"I'm just to the point where I don't think that you should all of a sudden make yourself into a walking billboard. So, we'll probably be pretty traditional around here."

Osborne said Adidas -- Nebraska's apparel supplier -- approached NU about making what Osborne described as "significant" changes to the football uniforms as far back as the 1990s, when Osborne was the head coach. He said NU would have been compensated for the proposed changes.

"I think that's probably the deal with a lot of these uniforms that you're now seeing that are really kind of odd," he said. "We've always pretty much turned those kinds of opportunities down ... (But) I haven't seen anything come across my desk lately."

I agree with Tom on this issue. Nebraska's football uniforms scream "tradition." You don't mess with that.

I have a feeling many folks will disagree with that stance ...

No weird changes for me, however, I would like an alternate color once a year. (Like that black and scarlet helmet we saw this year)

I am in TO's camp for this one?

I want my two Big Reds to stay traditional?

Somethings need to remain the same in life?

Oregon? Okie State?

PT, KW answered you yesterday on forum side?

Minor changes are acceptable... a stripe hear or there for example. But never change the helmet or overall scheme. We are a traditional and established program and don't need to chase the latest fad.

The teams that are constantly changing their uniforms are just wannabees who feel the need to draw attention to themselves.

Posted by: Husker Spock on January 13, 2012 2:10PM CST
Huskers don't need "Outfits" to show off their program. It's not logical! There's a difference between outfits and uniforms.

Posted by: Long Necks on January 13, 2012 2:11PM CST
Yep, agree. The Huskers' uniforms are great as they are.

Posted by: Busiekcreek on January 13, 2012 2:14PM CST
I disagree with the prior posts. The Nike Pro Combat unis were awesome although I realize Big Red uses Adidas which to me is far behind Nike.

As TO said he is 74 years old not the 17, 18 year old boys who love the newer gear. Tradition has its merits but stodgy/plain jane unis look just that on the field. Those black outfits Texas Tech wore were killers. JMHO

Posted by: Big Wave Dave on January 13, 2012 2:16PM CST
Actually, I want ditch the red strips down the leg for the traditional PLAIN WHITE home pants, and the traditional PLAIN RED pants for the away games.

And dump the the stripes on the jerseys too. Just a plain red jersey with numbers front and back.

And yes, that is I suppose my own age coming through.

Holding out for mirrored "N"s myself.

Excellent news!

Our present uniform, or something relatively close as we've had since the late 60's are our recognized brand! And a great one at that!

Posted by: Busiekcreek on January 13, 2012 2:21PM CST
Black with red accents with matching helmets would be fierce. We used the Nike Pro Combat unis for one game and the players loved them especially with the gloves on and hands held correctly made the "eye of the Tiger". I'm past my salad days but still tend to love the flamboyant. lol

Posted by: BigRedinKC02 on January 13, 2012 2:27PM CST
We need to the old belly cut off jerseys. The ones that the Peter brothers dominated in. Ah, the glory days.

Posted by: 4BigRed on January 13, 2012 2:28PM CST
So many people think the N on the helmet has been around forever. We had numbers on the helmets in the 60's then went to NU in the later 60's and finally went to N in 1970 but only as a money saver because they were too cheap to buy the "U".

One game every year or two with an alternate uniform (I would like the black with red accents also) would be fun. And while we would probably have several hundred people die of a heart attack or commit suicide over it, well that's just one way of thinning the herd!

Posted by: redcornman on January 13, 2012 2:29PM CST
Anyone know why we are always tied to Adidas? Is it a 100 year contract or something?

Posted by: PDX Husker on January 13, 2012 2:29PM CST
I think we should have them wear those throwback uniforms. Maybe as a reward for a decent bowl game wear a new uniform than usual. I think letting the kids have some fun like that goes a long way. Tom O did a few uniform changes in his day...

Posted by: Ture Husker on January 13, 2012 2:30PM CST
Yes, don't! Love the traditional unis. Not a billboard for anyone for dollars, in the age of billboards, llllove it.

Wrestler, thank you for that. Can't help loving the flash from time to time. When you come from an area where "real men" deck out in a hundred strands of Mardi Gras beads and food is not complete without a hearty dash of Tabasco, it figures.

Can't you just see the Nebraska D players decked out in black/red. It's not gonna happen but I would win a bet if you asked the players.

Probably the Ugliest unis on "earf" as Step says are the Penn State ones. They look like they came from the mark down bin at the St. Vincent de Paul store.

I have to agree with most on here and agree with Los.
Part of the problem in this country in general is everybody thinking there is a better way because it has been done that way for so long so if we do it different then it will be better.
Change is not always wht it is cracked up to be.

Posted by: Ture Husker on January 13, 2012 3:05PM CST
I can see a change if generated by the school, after all if we never changed unis we'd still be wearing those strapping striped tube socks to play basketball and short shorts and headbands for men's tennis. But when it's about all this corporation crepe, no thanks.

Posted by: HuskerMose on January 13, 2012 3:15PM CST
Agree with what everyone is saying but I did love the throwback uniforms they used for the sellout streak in 2009.

Posted by: LosSantosKid on January 13, 2012 3:18PM CST
i don't have significant issues with throwbacks to previous configurations... occasionally. i like it in fact. it reinforces our tradition. i would prefer we only reinforce the championship years or those just missed because that's a good promotional story imo.

and Busie, if i need to jab a stick in your cage i will. good mood, bad mood, no mood, too mood.

I think if I was Nebraska and my apparel company approached me with the idea for a change, my response would be:

"PRETTY CLEARLY, YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE STAND FOR....I'LL BEGIN THE SEARCH FOR A COMPANY THAT BETTER UNDERSTANDS THAT IMMEDIATELY."

white helmet no clutter number for ID purposes.

scarlet or brilliant scarlet jersey on top of cream metallic cream...and v/v.

do it like Bama did this year.

Posted by: apolishwarhorse on January 13, 2012 3:34PM CST
You can wear a different jersey for maybe 1 or 2 games. A lot of teams do that...uniform changes don't have to be permanent. I like our current uniforms but it would be cool to seem them do what other schools are doing and wear a different uniform a couple times a year. Players want it and a lot of younger fans want it.

I might accept some Minor changes in shirts or pants but Leave the helmet alone. It has its own classic style and anybody that we want to play here would be proud to wear it.

Shoes, gloves, maybe pants but Please, not the helmet.

I like the traditional uniforms. It speaks to the tradition of the program.

However, I know the kids like a different look now and then. I have no problem awarding the kids a special uniform for their bowl game after they win the BIG championship.

I have to admit I love the Husker all black Nike combat uni with red N on helmet, red jersey numbers and red shoe. Really looks bad and gives the kids a little added incentive to win the BIG if they really want to wear that uni for a game.

It's far from a traditional look, but add to the tradition, don't change it. Something special for the kids if they have special seasons.

Where's GBRTx when we need him? He will set everyone straight.

The funny thing is that it's not 55 year old dudes out running around on the field in these uni's....it's kids. And the kids absolutely love this stuff. They eat it up as anyone with a junior high/high schooler can attest to.

To not embrace a couple minor changes to the uni for at least one home game (not at all a lot to ask) is putting NU behind the 8 ball in recruiting when a northern school like NU needs every perk it can get.

And don't come with "well, if he chooses a school based on a uniform, we don't need that type of primadonna." Who knows? Maybe it's just one silly thing like that which makes the decision sway against us.

Also, if you "won't go/watch if NU sells out to this"......There's plenty of people in line behind you who will.

I'd be okay if Nebraska did something like Wisconsin's helmets for the Rose Bowl. There was a subtle rose graphic in the red W of the helmets. You had to look close to even see it, but it was a nice understated touch to mark a special event.

Posted by: LosSantosKid on January 13, 2012 4:02PM CST

I watched the Wisconsin game. Never noticed the helmets. I was to busy blinking my eyes to keep from getting dizzy from the Duck helmets. And the camo look was just plain ugly

Posted by: Trashman on January 13, 2012 4:13PM CST
So I guess WI has the feel of being less "traditional" now for that egregious error in "traditional" judgement.

To me, it's downright silly to not have a little fun with it for at least a game.

Everything that the "N" stands for will still be intact.

Posted by: Trashman on January 13, 2012 4:19PM CST
PT

I think that's part of the problem. When everyone thinks of uniform changes".....they think of the Ducks. That's the drastic end of the spectrum with mirrored helmets and feathered shoulder pads (or Maryland's awful state flag uni's).

Think minor, yet noticeable. Like the "inadvertent black helmet photo" (yes, your helmet would probably get a little manipulating).

PT, most of my blogging friends/congregate around various Facebook sites as it tends to be more "sane" and much like LITR.

I go to Tiger Droppings to catch the latest gossip/ and especially the fark portion. It is very impersonal unless you post frequently. There is a Tiger Rant as well as an SEC rant. Am just hoping when the LITR changes come about, it will offer more variables such as posting pictures etc. Forbid us to go through the thorns/briars on the last changeover.

LosSantos we know you are really a sweet Teddy Bear and it will take more than you to stir up Marie L. lol

Off topic but i have caught a feww NU B Ball games on the Big Network. they are really impressed with the new Practice facility. they have shown it several times qand bragged it up a bunch.

Sure can't hurt anything.

Honestly I would be up for a change in our Uniforms... only if it were to add a black uniform.

I know black isn't one of the true color of the school, but hey we went against Tradition this past year and joined the Big Ten.

Why not add a black uniform to honor the blackshirts.

That would be the only change that I would like.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on January 13, 2012 4:47PM CST
There's a saying:

"If you do what you've always done, then you'll always get what you've always got."

Sometimes a little change isn't bad.

Posted by: HuskerDarls on January 13, 2012 5:15PM CST
I'm 35 years old and I think our uniforms are great, but I would love to see a change for a game each year.

I think these uniforms would be cool...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/icedavis/6183554041/

...if they made the numbers black (which is a color I ABSOLUTELY think we need to make an official school color...we're the damn Blackshirts, for cryin out loud!!).

I don't need the camo or anything Maryland-esque, but we need to mix it up a bit. It would go a long way with the players (both high school and current). All of the Husker players on Twitter talk about how great it would be to do SOMETHING. I don't think we need to reinvent the wheel, we should just add something a little different, for just ONE game per year. The traditionalists can keep the regular unis the rest of the time. Everybody wins!!

Posted by: RocketHusker on January 13, 2012 5:25PM CST
Trash,

That is exactly what I think. A subtle alternate uniform for a big night game or special occasion if the players and coaches want. Oregon and Maryland are way over the top.

Something simple and classic modern, the kids will love playing in it and would hopefully bring a special focus to the game.

Posted by: DocHuckleberry on January 13, 2012 5:26PM CST

Anyways one episode the former slave owner, rail boss who just killed a man to save one of his black railworkers from getting hanged for sleeping with a white prostitute.

Later on after they have fled the scene the former Southern slave owner knows they will send a posse after them (no law in the territory yet) ...so he asks the former slave if he knows how to use a pistol.

"Oh yes...masser let us play with firearms on the plantation alls the time...yes sir"

I had a near stroke...funniest damn smart azz comment I've heard in a long time.

Posted by: mike5790 on January 13, 2012 6:46PM CST
I think Apex was the last non-Adidas uni? Maybe their German cousins at Puma want to make a splash and come out with some nasty scarlet and black puma unis. Anyway, first off, if a kid is choosing his school because of cool uniforms, then so be it. And if enough of them do... screw college football. All of it. It's all going two-hand touch anyway because everyone wants to create rules, but nobody has the sense that minimalist shoulder pads can take the game right back. Off the soap box, I agree that I like the unis. While I liked the old ones with the belly cut off, I do like how the newer cuts make all the players look cut and lean (but somehow short--Niles Paul looks like a real WR in a Skins uni, but he looked stocky and cut in a Neb uni). I'd be up for a reversal once... maybe metallic scarlet helmet with a white N? Whatever. I have to admit I'm pretty over it. I love what Michigan did to tweak their unis. Small change, but I liked it. And yes. I'm not down for all the crappy unis that Oregon has--was just happy when they dropped the yellow helmets years ago--but I will say... those chrome helmets with the detail were pretty dang niiiice. But you know what, if for a big game Adidas or whomever is willing to pony up the cash to do it, why not... as long as it pays respect to our heritage and looks mean rather than like crash test dummies (looking at you MD), why not? No biggie tho. I'm not going to pimp about it like we HAVE to do it because kids don't want to roll here because of it.

Posted by: Goldenrod Husker on January 13, 2012 6:54PM CST
I would go for a blackshirt but thats it. I think 5 star defensive recruits all over the country would flock to the N if we came out of the tunnel on sportscenter with those. Plus i think they would give our D a mental toughness edge. I believe in that physc mumbo jumbo. Basically i would do it simply to benifit recruiting.

Posted by: NishBigRed on January 13, 2012 6:59PM CST
Wow what a bunch of fuddy-duddies.

You can want the uniforms to stay the same all you want then don't expect the Husker to compete with the likes that are marketing their product.

I say each year when Bo is recruiting a class you tell them one game the following year they get to design a uniform and wear it during a specific game.

I hate the Oregon's uniforms but the kids love and then again I have never played a game for Oregon.

I loved the Nike combat uniforms.

Sometimes change is good.

Yeah we stick with the traditional uniform for 99% of the games Huskers come in the traditional uniform but for that one game the design of the uniform belongs to that one specific recruiting class.

We need to figure a way to keep up with the rest of the Big Boys.

I for one would love to see a uniform that
that honors the black shirts and a reputation of having tough defenses with great athletics.

Lets come out all in black to include the helmets.
Bring back the likes of Suh and every other defensive player.

Be a great way to recruit some defensive talent.

Posted by: Crawford Husker on January 13, 2012 7:14PM CST
Taylor Martinez and Rex Burkhead need 'hologram' uniforms.

Opposing defense would be unable to tackle them.

Trash could be the new offensive coordinator and look like a genious by simply running a '49 pitch' option every play.

Posted by: joe9wicket on January 13, 2012 7:18PM CST
The Cornhusker uniform as it is now, is already spaceage, with the stretch fit jerseys and the pants barely covering the knees. No black/alt unis please. I would like to see the throwback from the 300 game. Old school all the time. And maybe the road unis could actually be cream rather than the eggshell white, same with the home w/ the numbers/stripes/pants. I remember how big a deal it was when they were able to get red facemasks and switched from the block N on the sleeve to stripes. So, yeah, you want a changeup that still reflects tradition, that would be my ideal.

You want black on a husker uni? Watch Basketball, volleyball, or the odd sunday baseball game where they wear black at home. I'll continue to hate any team that insists on wearing all white for road games (it never worked for us) makes the 'horns look a bit.... weak? And the teams that now where black at home sure look like they are trying too hard to make themselves look tough.... Okie St, Ttech... etc....

Posted by: Ture Husker on January 13, 2012 7:29PM CST
A uni change improves defensive execution and recruiting? "The kids love 'em!" best corporate line ever. Kids dream of new outfits- they are very, very important- to figure skaters. The blackshirt isn't honored like that.

The way Kenny Bell wears that ratty blue shirt to remind himself of being on the scout team, that has meaning, classic. Fashion "combat unis" not so much.

Not saying some subtle changes couldn't be fun once in a while but too far and it cuts into the integrity. I imagine them running out in that stuff and it just feels so wrong. jmho

Posted by: HUSKER!!!! POWER!!!! on January 13, 2012 7:32PM CST
I like the traditional uniforms. I think it would be interesting if they picked a few of the variations over the years and used them from time to time. There have been some pretty cool variations at different times and I'm sure everyone has their preference of the different eras. Just bury the early 00's. Those were hideous and a bad idea. LOL I think that would be unique and might be interesting if it's done the right way.

Maybe they could make their everyday jerseys similar to the jerseys they've had in the past, from nameplates to numbers. I know if they did they wouldn't look like anyone else. They'd be all Nebraska. I'm sure some find this to be an amusing topic, maybe a perfect waste of time LOL but that's what I think.

GBR!!!

BCS Game Winners This Year:
Oregon
Oklahoma St.
West Virginia
Michigan

I think you see my point. You can't tell me teams jerseys do not affect recruiting. In order for teams to compete in today's game they must be able to market themselves. A portion of this marketing is done through the uniforms teams wear. The college game has changed significantly since Tom was coach and he fails to realize that. Don't get me wrong I am all for traditional jerseys. I love the jerseys and appearance of teams with traditional jerseys, but I feel 1 or 2 alternate jerseys a year is a must. What can it hurt? If anything, there are several benefits: 1. Money 2. "Swag" 3. Money! Just my two cents

PDX Husker,
golly jeepers they sure will when they strap on the antiques...

I think you're on to sth. here?

The leather football helmet has it’s origin more than100 years ago first worn in an 1893 Army-Navy game.

Or if a good hair day and not too windy?

Most of the 1890--1915 games were actually played without helmets

Now with all the criticism, for TM's passing for so many now, these uniforms leather or lack of, as in no helmets, it would seem appropriate for regression back, to prior the using of the forward pass as:

Knute Rockne
As captain of the Notre Dame University football team in 1913, Knute Rockne inaugurated the forward pass.

Yes, leather helmets for on a bad hair day, now on a beautiful windless day, no helmets? Why the future, when looking to going back in time, seems to fit?

I went to sleep after rat hunting and being on here for a brief time and wow, seems the thread degenerated from the beginning?

Again all differing opinions, should be allowed to be expressed in a civil tone without personal attacks?

I always wonder, how many look in for the first time, to some of the rhetoric used towards one another?

How many potential good bloggers, do we lose from their observations without partaking?

So I like tradition and not that old, as someone said it above, when you have a program such as NU steeped in tradition, why wouldn't a younger person be ingratiated for the wearing of such a storied program's uniform, of all-time legacy?

How many of us would have loved running on to Memorial stadium with N on helmet like Rluben and Los and others on here?

I know, I would have loved that experience?

And yet, I concede, that for some games, a changing or compromising, to the younger tastes would suffice also?

Compromising with uniforms or others opinions, should be what we all strive for, don't you think?

As long as civil in the presenting?

Going towards 10 am Saturday?

Later!

As now my most important duty, is going with KW for shopping and purse carrying? Oh what a good house husband, I do make?

Try it, you'll like it?

GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

Crawford

You maybe missed it from a previous thread, but I got hired as the DB Coach unknowingly.

But I will resign to be the OC. I can't pass up hologram uni's.

Quaid/Howser at one time used the hologram to allow Mars to have "air"....how could you deny the effectiveness of that?

Trash,

For a bit there, I thought I was going to have to be the one to verify your new standing, until SVH corrected himself. Whew!

By the way, I silently commit to approving Aaron Curry attending and playing for N. Don't know anything about him, but I love the last name.

I just hope they never go back to the 70's nylon perforated ones. I don't think my nipples have healed yet. (oop...can I say nipples here?)

I'd like to see something akin to what Baylor wore in their bowl game. Just a little flash of red striping on the pants on the front of the thigh/hip area. Orrrr...It could be white striping on a red pant. I thought it added a little to their uniforms. They're of course starting to get into that Oregon state of mind, where they will take it too far, instead of having good taste and knowing where to draw the line. I think there are a couple of things Nebraska COULD do but will they...I doubt it. Tradition is OK, but a little...I said A LITTLE, Flash/change would be nice! Go Huskers! :-)

I like the traditional uni's, but I'm hoping something will be done so the future Badger/Husker games don't look like a scrimmage. No all-white or all-red though!

I LOVE our uniforms! I tend to agree on a throwback uni every year for a game or two. The Wisconsin game would be a good game for it. Here is a list of the unis I would love to see on the field again.

1. 1990-1994
2. 1970-1971
3. 1983
4. 1995
5. 1986 all red look.

I know most could not stand all red uniforms, but I liked it. Just don't bring back the 2002 specials, especially the all white road version w/ the fat red stripe down the sides. I think the best jerseys we ever had were in 1999. I just personally in my humble opinion prefer stripes down the side of the pants.

But, whether we wear traditional unis, burlap bags w/ duct taped #s, or some space aged fad that looks like someone puked ketchup and clam chowder on, I will never miss a game and always love our Huskers.

By the way, has anyone heard anything on a possible opponent for a 7th home game this coming season? I believe the game would be on September 22nd.

Posted by: Rickinaz on January 14, 2012 6:57AM CST
I would be scared that we'd get a uniform change that would look something like the Dr Jekeyl and Mr Hyde uniforms that Maryland sported this last year. Wow, how would we say Go Big Red??? I don't mind a differing stripe or something basic, but a wild change.... No way! Go Huskers!

we don't like change round these parts. get off my lawn!

If they started winning championships again, no one in Husker Nation would care if they wore pink tu-tu's with lime green beanies.

Problem with the black used for uniform shirts, may be takes something away from the guys who have earned their black practice shirt, then go out and play hard for the team in their team jerseys. Just a thougt.

Do we want to look like Frech whores or do we want to look like the

Nebraska Cornhuskers

Osborne's response and several others on this blog point to the core issue with the football program. Instead of always hoping things will return to the way they USED to be focus on what they are becoming. It is no longer the 90's...the game has changed and Nebraska has been slow to adopt those changes. Other programs have embraced it and results have followed. Evolve or become comfortable with mediocrity. One definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

One other response I see re-occuring on this post is that several "fans" say they do not want to see any changes with the uni's. Well sorry to break the news to you guys but it is not about what you want. It is about what the 18-22 year old kids out there every Saturday what. Why not let them decided what uniforms they would like to wear. After all they are the ones who are sacrificing year round to entertain you all on Saturday's.

So now football is turning into a style show???

aAre we recruiting football players or their girlfriends?

But then I am not into tats or body rings or all that other "Look at me" Stuff. Or standing over somebody 15 yards down field acting like I am all that for doing my job a little late.

What ever. As long as it doesn't get stupid a few upgrades would probably be OK.

TJK,you're right, it's not what we fans want,it's what Tom and the school wants, and Tom wants to stay with the current uni's. It is also NOT what the 18-22 year olds want, they will wear what they are given, they come here for DONU not what the uni's look like, nor does a team win by just changing thier uni's
