Osborne: Expect close games
Posted by: Steve Sipple on September 1, 2009 at 2:52PM CST

Tom Osborne understands the nature of Nebraska football fan expectations.

"They're usually pretty high," he said Tuesday.

That said, the Nebraska athletic director said he mostly will be watching this season to see overall improvement throughout the program.

"I think we'll probably see that, particularly on the defensive side of the ball," he said. "I think the offense can be good. Hopefully it'll fall into place, but there's going to be some close games.

"And I think in some of these first three home games (Florida Atlantic, Arkansas State, Louisiana-Lafayette) that we might be challenged more than people think.

"Everyone has good athletes. Everyone starts the season optimistically. Everyone believes they can get it done. By the fifth, sixth, seventh game, some teams start getting beat down and begin to lose confidence.

"Right now, nobody's been beat down yet. So you're going to get a great effort. The thing that you always hold your breath about the first game, the first two games, is turnovers."

Bam! I'd like close games against the ranked teams and blowouts against the teams we should beat. is that asking too much?

Usually pretty high??

We'll see...I figure that the games we are supposed to win, we'll do so handily. The games that we are supposed to lose, we'll lose so in hard fought battles that are much closer than last year's blowouts.

Right now the line I saw on NU is 21 1/2...remember, TO is going to play the "politically correct" role as to seem that he's not picking on them nor that we scheduled cupcakes. He knows that we are going to win each of these first three games by 20+ each!

GO BIG RED!!!

Anyone get the feeling from reading this that TO is not impressed by what he has seen with the offense? I'm a true Husker...paranoid.

TO is a wise man. You have to prepare hard for every team. In today's game with all the parity there are no give me's. Just ask Colorado against Montana State, or Michigan agains Applaician State. While I think we will win against FA, Shellenberger will have them well prepared.

Mike, we can can make all kind of interpretations, and it's ok to be a little paranoid. But, I feel this defense is really going to be the strength of this team. On offense we have talent, but we have a fairly inexperienced WR corp. Inexperience in our #2 I-back postion. A Qb with very little game day experience and the two backups with no snaps in the college level. So it may take several games before they reach an idenity.

Still we don't know until we play the games.

bigredN - TO probably has forgot more football, than what any other Coach knows, and still knows more than they do.

Think TO is making a comparative reference to his '95 team. All he is saying is, it will be 55-10 instead of 70-3. Sorry BO, you have to do better.

It seems there are some that forget Lee is a JUCO transfer. Below is what he did his last year at San Fran. I know he is in the big legues now but he has had a year to grow into the system.

Lee had a standout campaign for Coach George Rush, with more than 3,400 passing yards and 35 touchdowns while completing 64 percent of his passes. Lee's performance led San Francisco City College to a 10-2 record and an appearance in the California junior college title game. The City College of San Francisco offense averaged nearly 40 points per game with Lee at the controls.
