NU's 'Dream Team' prevails
Posted by: Steve Sipple on April 23, 2010 at 9:26AM CST

Nebraska did something pretty cool during its seven-week winter conditioning program.

Head football strength coach James Dobson organized a competition involving eight teams. Each team had two leaders who drafted players before winter conditioning began.

Dobson designed conditioning-oriented events held throughout the seven weeks -- some events designed for teams, others for individuals. Dobson left it up to the teams to decide which players competed in certain events.

This was the first time Dobson has organized such an extensive competition.

"I wanted these guys to have more ownership," Dobson said Thursday in answering why teams were formed. "You can't just turn on the competition switch in the fall. You have to compete year-round."

Said Jeff Jamrog, assistant A.D. for football: "It's another way to get guys excited about coming in every day and competing."

The winning team was the "Dream Team," captained by junior Jared Crick and senior Niles Paul. Their team had Cameron Meredith, Keith Williams, Jeremiah Sirles, Nick Ash, Joe Broekemeier, Mike Hays, Tyrone Lewis, Robert Barry, Curenski Gilleylen, Collins Okafor, Jim Ebke, Courtney Osborne and Adam Watson.

"They won it by a landslide, to be honest with you," Dobson said. "We also had teams that quite frankly were unorganized...I hope they learned from it, because we called them out on it."

After the "Dream Team" was declared champion, Dobson jokingly asked Paul what he wants for a prize. Paul's response was telling.

"I don't care about the prize; I just want to compete," he said.

* * Nebraska's spring conditioning sessions (running and lifting) continue until finals week (May 3-8). "A lot of places shut it down after spring practices end," Dobson said. After spring conditioning ends, players get four weeks to train on their own before the Huskers' official summer conditioning program begins the second week of June.

Nono

You cut bait too early. This was your prize thread to read.....

Trash, But did they set any records? :)

Posted by: Steve Sipple on April 23, 2010 9:48AM CST
PT Huskers,

Ha!

Posted by: PT Husker on April 23, 2010 9:52AM CST
Also I am sure they were doing this a 2 AM because Therer is never anybody in there.

Just teasing Ya No.

Top of that morning to ya Sip.

Were is Asante projected to

PT

But were there referees for this competition? Were the green jersey's off?
Who were the leaders of each team?
Who were the teams that did poorly?
Will they be asked to do more?
Why was our best defensive and offensive player on the same team together?
Was it just lifting conditioning or cardio as well?

Sharsh.

Would love to know who the unorganized teams were...have a feeling these are guys just along for the ride anymore. Time to "allow them to explore other opportunities elsewhere".

Back on Topic. This is a great idea. Put some fun into what can be pretty boring for some. Mix the teams up for the next time and let them go at it again.

Nothing like a little old fashiioned competition to make you push yourself a bit.

I like it.

I know we used to do this with some of my teams. Usually it was at practice but the prize was not to run. If you didn't want to win for whatever reason before that, you wanted to win just so you didn't run. Certainly helps stuff go by a little faster and make it competitive yet fun. You don't want one of your teammates raggin' on you all season or for however long because you lost. Where is No No when you need him?

Sounds like not only a good way to get folks motivated for winter conditioning, but a way to separate those who talk the talk from those who walk the walk.

Posted by: TomOs on April 23, 2010 10:48AM CST
Sounds like a team unity.. bonding deal.. to me

Posted by: TomOs on April 23, 2010 10:52AM CST
It's rigged deal .. A. Watson was on the team..

I wonder how the "Dream Team" would do against the Husker Volleyball Team? The last group of football players to try matching up got their knockers handed to them. Wasn't that Paul who got his head bounced around by Mueller's kills?

i dont get it! so what was the competition?

Posted by: Insidious1 on April 23, 2010 11:45AM CST
"Dobson designed conditioning-oriented events held throughout the seven weeks -- some events designed for teams, others for individuals"

Might be the best we will get... sounds good enough for me.

so what was the competition?

How about a tug of war? FU, against everybody else? Here he is doing, a simple clean and jerk, with 276 kg or 1,050 lbs?

But good stuff, I agree, for No to read or see, but Trash, you and I know, No, would have his questions about it, also?

Going towards 1 am Trash, you and FU, need to drink more green tea or lu cha?

i would guess, using the keyword 'conditioning', that it was sprints, agility, lifting.

Perhaps like a track meet minus the Pole Vault, adding in squats.. or something like that.

Cone Drills, 10 yard dash, 20 yard dash, 100 yard sprint, Relays.. Chemistry building things.

Jeremiah Sirles, Nick Ash, Joe Broekemeier, Courtney Osborne were all drafted by Niles and Jared?

Hmm, does this denote playing time potential, or was this an asture move by a few seniors that knew what they were doing?

Posted by: NishBigRed on April 23, 2010 11:53AM CST
Who was on the other teams?

If the competition was measured on conditioning oriented events wouldn’t a team that consists of mostly DS, WR and RB have an advantage?
I don’t know the positions of all the players on the dream team, but I don’t see any recognizable linemen, either offensive or defensive.

Now if the drills consisted of Piggy back relays it always helps to have a lineman doing the carrying
It is always funny to watch a WR, try to carry a Lineman doing these relays, they usually fall down.
I wonder if the Husker do monkey rolls? Nothing more fun than doing monkey rolls and having a lineman fall on you. Good times.
Anyone?

Sorry make that 476 KG not 276 my bad!

Jeremiah Sirles, Nick Ash -- both redshirt freshman linemen.

Posted by: Insidious1 on April 23, 2010 12:03PM CST
70 Ash, Nick OL 6-5 275 RFr. Keller, Texas (Keller)

57 Sirles, Jeremiah OL 6-6 310 RFr. Lakewood, Colo. (Bear Creek)

Both are pushing for playing time (or this was the buzz in spring camp)

Posted by: Insidious1 on April 23, 2010 12:11PM CST
they also had Cameron Merideth -- projected starter at RE

Kieth Williams -- has started at LG for 2 years now.

91 Barry, Robert TE 6-8 240 RFr. Battle Creek, Neb. (Battle Creek)

37 Lewis, Tyrone LB 6-2 205 RFr. Lincoln, Neb. (North Star)

30 Hays, Mike FB 6-1 235 Jr. Papillion, Neb. (Papillion-LaVista)

32 Ebke, Jim S 6-0 210 Jr. Lincoln, Neb. (South Dakota State) (East)

29 Okafor, Collins IB 6-1 225 So. Omaha, Neb. (Westside)

16 Watson, Adam DB 6-0 185 Sr. Lincoln, Neb. (Niwot (Colo.))

One Common thing with this team... Most of them are 'in staters'.

Posted by: Insidious1 on April 23, 2010 12:13PM CST
Looks like Robert Barry might be a DE by the end of his tenure at NU, by statistics and jersey # alone.

Posted by: PT Husker on April 23, 2010 12:18PM CST
Ray, The football team had their "Knockers" handed to them? Maybe a bad choice of words.

Posted by: NishBigRed on April 23, 2010 12:19PM CST
Thanks Insidious1,
See most of those guys are speed guys.
Isn't Cameron Merideth a DE?

Now who will be the next Husker taken in the draft? Larry Asante?

OU had 3 first rounders.
Imagine what they would have been like if Bradford had played?

Kind of proves the fact no matter how much talent a team has, if they don't have a proven QB, the team may not reach it's potential.

Posted by: Big Red in Big D 007 on April 23, 2010 12:36PM CST
OU had four in the first round

Posted by: TomOs on April 23, 2010 12:37PM CST
Good point Nish.. 5 int. will usually lose a ballgame.. or 8 turnovers..

Posted by: TomOs on April 23, 2010 12:41PM CST
that was my point with.. that why I can't understand all this craziness about TMart.. you cant expect a RS freshman to take you to the promised land.. they are not Moses.. and he may be great QB in a year or two..

Posted by: Wrestler on April 23, 2010 12:43PM CST
OU had four in the first round

Big Red in Big D 007

You're right! Nish was wondering about Sam playing what if? What about Jermaine TE #21 to Bengals, preseason best as now shown in the draft? He didn't play a down got hurt before first game, Sam's go to guy? Sam and Jermaine 2 of the four taken first round and didn't play? TE was a beast?

SUCH IS LIFE!

PT. It's all in the interpretation of the metaphor, since it is a dictionary word suitable for publication.

Round II: Take the 15 guys, divide them into 8 groups (2 each with Crick the loner) and let them captain the next 8 teams. Repeat the "draft" format. Spread what worked for "Dream Team" to the remaining 105 or so players (assuming there were about 15 on each team). Spread that "unity" lesson around. Got the vision, Dr. Dobson? Call me if you have any questions!! LOL

Posted by: belacoz on April 24, 2010 5:04AM CST
So what was the competition? Which team can lift more? Or is it pound for pound? Does it include speed and agility work? Vert? More reps? Who looks better without their shirt on? Who has more lines in their pecs? Who can squeeze more juice out of orange in their buttcheeks? LOL!
