NU's 'Dream Team' prevails

Nebraska did something pretty cool during its seven-week winter conditioning program. Head football strength coach James Dobson organized a competition involving eight teams. Each team had two leaders who drafted players before winter conditioning began. Dobson designed conditioning-oriented events held throughout the seven weeks -- some events designed for teams, others for individuals. Dobson left it up to the teams to decide which players competed in certain events. This was the first time Dobson has organized such an extensive competition. "I wanted these guys to have more ownership," Dobson said Thursday in answering why teams were formed. "You can't just turn on the competition switch in the fall. You have to compete year-round." Said Jeff Jamrog, assistant A.D. for football: "It's another way to get guys excited about coming in every day and competing." The winning team was the "Dream Team," captained by junior Jared Crick and senior Niles Paul. Their team had Cameron Meredith, Keith Williams, Jeremiah Sirles, Nick Ash, Joe Broekemeier, Mike Hays, Tyrone Lewis, Robert Barry, Curenski Gilleylen, Collins Okafor, Jim Ebke, Courtney Osborne and Adam Watson. "They won it by a landslide, to be honest with you," Dobson said. "We also had teams that quite frankly were unorganized...I hope they learned from it, because we called them out on it." After the "Dream Team" was declared champion, Dobson jokingly asked Paul what he wants for a prize. Paul's response was telling. "I don't care about the prize; I just want to compete," he said. * * Nebraska's spring conditioning sessions (running and lifting) continue until finals week (May 3-8). "A lot of places shut it down after spring practices end," Dobson said. After spring conditioning ends, players get four weeks to train on their own before the Huskers' official summer conditioning program begins the second week of June.
