Not real big on breakfast
Posted by: Curt McKeever on October 16, 2009 at 8:06AM CST

That's me, not Barney Cotton, the featured speaker at the just-concluded Big Red Breakfast here in beautiful and misty Big O.

This blogger's money says the Huskers' associate head/offensive line coach spent a lot more time getting 'fixed up' for the event than most who work in the trenches, Truly a sharp-dresssed man (maybe because his parents were on hand).

Any way, that's probably not what you're here to read, so let's get down to the good stuff (or at least what was on the coach's mind at what he called "one of the best-speaking deals we get to go to.").

Though proud they had overcome a lot of mistakes to beat a Missouri team that had had their number recently, Cotton labeled the Huskers' mood as subdued when they met to review the game. That attitude has led to what he called one of the best weeks of practice this season.

"We seem to have a bunch of players that are very willing to hold themselves to an extremely high standard," Cotton said . "It was a fun week to coach. These guy were very focused and very concentrated.

"It's nice to have a bunch of guys that want to atone after a victory rather than after a loss. I'm sure that's going to translate to very-hard play (for Saturday's game against Texas Tech)."

Cotton also showed a sense of humor, poking fun at how Nebraska was able to run the ball "over and over and over" on it's last, game-sealing drive at Missouri. The Huskers' lack of a ground attack (or unwillingness to try to generate one) has been a sore coffee-shop topic this week.

More Cotton. . .

On recruiting offensive linemen: NU plans to take three or four every year and wants four in this year's class.

On freshman Jeremiah Sirles:  He's come along far  enough at left tackle that a planned redshirt could come off.

On the running back situation with top backup Rex Burkhead now out with a broken bone: "I can't really tell you who 2-3-4 are. . . . There's a chance we could play four running backs this week. They've all gotten a significant amoung of reps."

On whether he's concerned about the national attention defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh is receiving: "No. I think most nights our coaches say a little think-you prayer that Suh is on our team. . . . I don't see him as being a guy that gets complacent. And it's not bad for your program to have a little notariety.

"I heard on the sideline (at Missouri) one time Suh went up to Zac (Lee), 'Hey, we've got your back.'  Our players are very unified, and that' the message we preach every week. We're a team."

Something I found interesting was that right guard Ricky Henry leads the Huskers in knockdown blocks. Henry had 18 against Virginia Tech. Just to give you something to compare that to, Cotton said NU had 22 AS A TEAM last week, after being in the 60s the previous two games.

Can't wait for lunch.

Nice one Charger!

Saturday's test with TTech will be very interesting. They get the ball out quick with slants and outside patterns, we'll see how quickly our D can adjust and make plays in space!

I really enjoy watching Ricky "bisquick" Henry play. He just constantly goes after it. I don't know what his assignments are but I know he is going to his someone.

Posted by: RedDog77 on October 16, 2009 8:39AM CST
Powerhusker, was that the same person that told you that Holt was booted from the team?

Posted by: joe t on October 16, 2009 8:44AM CST
Now taking shots at Lucky...wow, great fans we have. So if a player doesn't live up to the hype, its ok to bash in some form?

Posted by: BleedingRed on October 16, 2009 8:47AM CST
joe t,

It's okay for 1 or 2 people to do it. They don't represent the masses.

There is always going to be those that are out on the fringes.

Posted by: BleedingRed on October 16, 2009 8:51AM CST
POWERHUSKERS,

Ricky "bisquick" Henry is in the food industry.

He makes pancakes.

I am hoping that we can call the entire offensive line the "breakfast club" when they start making scrambled eggs and pancakes on a very consistent basis.

Posted by: charger on October 16, 2009 8:54AM CST
Maybe after tomorrows game some people can relax. If this team is in the beginings of being totaly accounable for their actions on the field and wanting to be perfect we just need to let it happen.

The talk about NU being back is great. They may never be like the teams of the 90's but the results can be the same. It is also good because just can't stand not hearing anything about DONU on the sports. (only if something bad happened or we got blowed out as in the past). We just need to enjoy the journey.

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on October 16, 2009 8:57AM CST
As long as Henry keeps his P2P (pancake-to-penalty) ratio above 3:1, I'll be happy...

Posted by: PT Husker on October 16, 2009 9:06AM CST
Well, after those comments many of our bloggers are probably feeling justified. "See, I told you we are a crappy offense.. See this, See that. What is cool is the attitude of the team. they know they can do better. And we still won the game after not playing our best.

Been a few years since that has happened huh.

Posted by: BleedingRed on October 16, 2009 9:16AM CST
Pancake: When a player takes the legs out from an opposing player, forcing the opposing player to get up from the ground.

Scrambled eggs: When a player hits an opposing player so hard they fall to the ground and stumble while getting up.

Bacon: When a player hits an opposing player so hard they fall to the ground and are not able to immediately get up. Although they may still "sizzle" for a while.

Juice: When a player hits an opposing player so hard that "liquids" come out of the opposing player.

Each player that achieves all four parts of the breakfast should be inshrined in the breakfast club.

I can see it now...
Ricky "bisquick" Henry was recently enshrined into the coveted breakfast club after serving 12 pancakes, 2 slices of bacon, a large portion of scrambled eggs all while offering free seconds on juice.

Posted by: HskerDean on October 16, 2009 9:17AM CST
It's good to see the Huskers respond to the first 3 quarters of struggle and down 9-0 at the half and 12-0 at the end of three, and STILL come back to win the game. Cally's teams would not have responded to that (they never, not once, came back from a half-time deficit).

Posted by: Husker512 on October 16, 2009 9:22AM CST
Someone needs to ask Bo when he is going to give out the Blackaprons. Or is it Blackspatulas?

Posted by: PT Husker on October 16, 2009 9:23AM CST
We all knew Ricky cxold be a good one. He has kept his emotions in check thanks in large part to Jacob Hickman.

Gottam love the unity and the leadship.

Posted by: BleedingRed on October 16, 2009 9:30AM CST
I think that Jacob is playing pretty well also. We need the entire offensive line to start taking over games.

I have heard people question the ability of our line but I have not given up on them. Each of them have shown good things from time to time. I believe that they will eventually come together and really show what they are capable of.

Posted by: charger on October 16, 2009 9:31AM CST
PT
We'll just call up MU & tell them that they can have the W cause our offence sucked. We just got lucky & scored 27 points.

Did anyone else relize that Gabbert's pass percentage was worse than Zac's?

17 of 43 for 39% with 2 picks = 14 points
14 of 33 for 42% no picks.

Posted by: BleedingRed on October 16, 2009 9:34AM CST
My oldest son got upset the other day. He plays on the offensive and defensive line. He said, "I don't know why everone makes such a big deal of the running backs and quarter back. Do you know who scores the touchdowns? I do. I open up huge holes for them to run through and all they have to do is run through it. I am the one that makes the touchdowns happen."

Posted by: PT Husker on October 16, 2009 9:40AM CST
Good Idea Charger. I mean we really don't deserve that win. Which is want some of the Mizzu guys are saying anyway according to Sports Nightly. In fact we don't deserve any more wins if we don't run the ball 50 times and "Impose our Will". So as l;ong as Watson is gonna run this silly "Spread Style" offense, (which IMO give a team with Good but not Great talent, a chance to win), we will play for the practice but not keep score.

Relax guys. Just poken at ya a little. We are all godd fans and love our team. Just got different ways of expressing it I guess.

DBP Any signifigance the car car getting crushed is red. Just curious.

Posted by: BleedingRed on October 16, 2009 9:47AM CST
POWERHUSKERS,

That is really my point that I am trying to make. We need to recognize the contributions of every person on this team. I just can't express how much of a team game this is. Every cog must execute as one machine.

If something is not working or not performing effectively then that cog needs to be re-evaluated as to whether it should be replaced.

However we must also recognize when things are working very well and be as vocal on those occassions as we are when they do not.

It is so easy to arm chair quarterback after the fact. It is not so easy to take the time to find the things that are going well, concentrate on them, evaluate why and put processes in place to give the team better opportunites to achieve success.

In my opinion, and this is not some miraculous discovery, this all starts and end with the offensive and defensive lines.

Let's recognize their contributions and give them praise when they are successful.

No one wants to go to work and be bichd at on a daily basis.

How about a boss that says, "You did a great job on this and that. It looked like we had some issues with this so let's take a look at what we can do as a group to make this work better. You have my full support."

Posted by: PT Husker on October 16, 2009 9:49AM CST
Oops, We are playing the RED Raiders. How about a Pirate ship being blown up? Can you do that?

Nice Post Bleeding. And it makes no sense at all to bash on somebody that is no longer here. Kind of like peeing on somebodys grave.

Posted by: BleedingRed on October 16, 2009 9:55AM CST
PT Husker,

That reminds me of the story about the guy that wants a fine bottle of scotch poured over his grave. His friend says, "Sure I'll do that for ya. But do you mind if I run it through me kidney's first."

The only incentives and memories for the OL are cleat marks on their backs which the RB's made while climbing over them to get to the endzone. How are those scars healing up POWER. Now I see why you're down on the RB who led the Big 12 as a JR, you never got any credit when your's scored all those TD's. LOL. Got no glory in the W's?

Posted by: Country Husker on October 16, 2009 10:11AM CST
Bleeding Red, I'm a likin' the Breakfast Menu.... fun stuff. Let's hope we can serve some up on Saturday.

I also have no problems with Watson's 'take what they give' statements. I reckon he's watched significantly more film of all of our opponents defenses that any of us bloggers so he may have a clue of what is gonna work. So, a game plan based on tendancies gathered in film study seems to be pretty solid. What the heck else do you figure he can do? Study a crystal ball? Call up opposing def. coordinators and ask for a few hints?

And hey, the running game depends on blocking, blocking, and more blocking. TO knew that and I am pretty sure Wats does also.

GO BIG RED!

Run and pass, pass and run, just make sure we keep the ball and get to do plenty of both!

Posted by: TommyOC on October 16, 2009 10:18AM CST
Country -"the running game depends on blocking, blocking, and more blocking."

The "Breakfast Speaker" knows that as well, but until the POWERS OL starts run blocking better, we're not going to be a great running team. We could have Walter Payton in the backfield right now and he'll be fortunated to break 100. I don't care who's got the ball, they need good blocking in front of them to make it go. They are improving, but just like the QB, and the WR, and others, they got a ways to go.

Posted by: nipper on October 16, 2009 10:18AM CST
So any speculation who the top 3 are ? If they are planning on playing up to 3 backups, maybe Okafor, Ward & Mendoza ?

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on October 16, 2009 10:23AM CST
I'm guessing Ward, AJ, and Mendoza.

Posted by: Big Wave Dave on October 16, 2009 10:24AM CST

Posted by: BleedingRed on October 16, 2009 10:34AM CST

Please! Every one of the running backs are better than good.

You must be kidding.

Posted by: TommyOC on October 16, 2009 10:35AM CST
charger - you mean they'd be better off serving the breakfast club and not bothering playing in the game?

Posted by: PT Husker on October 16, 2009 10:36AM CST
Charger, Don't let them get you man. We positives will rule the world before it is over.

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on October 16, 2009 10:37AM CST
I think they will not be prepared for Mendoza's speed. If we get him 5 carries, 1 will go for 20+ yards.

Posted by: BleedingRed on October 16, 2009 10:37AM CST
Has anyone heard anything about Steinkuhler? Did he even play in the mu game? I kind of looked for him and do not recall seeing him out there.

Told him about once in by younger days getting stuck on a flat headstone in a cemetary with a date and the ensuing activity. cause we had nothing else to do.

did not tell him that after the activity I got out, Jacked up the car, pushed it off the jack and drove away.

That girls was kind of amazed. We however did go back to the cematary a few more times. He He He.

This kinda confirms what I have been hearing.... which is... Sirles is right there with Smith as our best LT.

They are trying to redshirt him.

Also... outside of QB... there no no more important position on our team. This news about Sirles is nothing short of HUGE for the future of our football team!

Posted by: charger on October 16, 2009 10:57AM CST
It's kinda funny, there is so much up side going on here now that some people just can't enjoy the journey. Bo says we have work to do: The position coaches are the ones calling out their players. Brown TE were soft blocking, Barney O line shooting themselves in the foot, and the best for last Ted Ya don't change the play you change the players.
GBR FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: TommyOC on October 16, 2009 10:58AM CST

I don't recall seeing him in the mu game.

Bleeding

The stats on huskers.com show Stien had 1 assisted tackle in the MU game. I thought I saw him in there.

I reckon he was too busy knocking down O-linemen so the Wrecking Suh could wreak havoc to get his name called by the announcers, who don't know our players names anyway.
