Monday practice update
Posted by: Brian Rosenthal on March 29, 2010 at 7:30PM CST
Nebraska’s second spring practice in full pads earned good reviews from the head coach.

“We’ve had good tempo,” Bo Pelini said after Monday’s indoor practice. “We’ve got a lot done, a lot put in, a lot of good base, fundamental work. I like what I’ve seen so far.”

Post-practice topics included linebackers, true freshmen and swagger.

Yes, swagger. A reporter asked Pelini about that being a buzz word among players in spring practices.

“I don’t buy into that,” Pelini said. “They can swagger all they want — they’ve got to execute. That’s all we care about. I’m not even sure what swagger is. Whatever. You can swagger as long as we win football games.”

Pelini said true freshmen defensive linemen Jay Guy and Chase Rome, who are both participating in spring ball, are progressing well.

“They’ve worked hard. Their future is bright, obviously. There’s a lot of learning to be done, a lot of technique and fundamental things that they’re seeing and hearing for the first time. But their effort’s been good, and they’re coming along.”

As for the linebackers, Eric Martin and Will Compton are becoming interchangeable at MIKE and WILL — if you still like labels for your linebacker positions.

“There’s really no MIKE, and there’s no WILL,” Pelini said. “It depends on the defense and how we have it set up.”

O man... sounds like the defense is gunna be very complex and hard for the offense to figure out...

That could be crazy... year 3 under Pelini... oh boy.

If I hadn't to have gone through 50 steps to register I'd have made it. But I'll slow down! I just enjoy Husker football and can't wait for the fall!

Posted by: drivebyposter on March 29, 2010 8:04PM CST
tenn,

Hill people have to do the 50 steps

flatlanders have about 30

us mountain folk only need about 4

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on March 29, 2010 8:13PM CST
And us Texans only have 2 steps.

Get it? Thats quite good. Quite good.

That was good RaZor.

I'm really interested to know how this offense is going to evolve. Has anyone heard anything concrete about the O-line and how that is shaping up? What exactly are these guys doing in practice anyway?? As for swag, I agree that it means nothing unless backed up with victories.

Posted by: big red 1 on March 29, 2010 8:28PM CST
I think the teams that play Nebrasks this year are nervous. I bet Texas is. This is the year of thr groundpounders!!! GBR

Posted by: Miami Beach Husker on March 29, 2010 8:36PM CST
Austin Cassidy and Matt Holt both got props from Bo after practice 4. Austin can play the nickel and safety position. He is flexible, a trait that Bo loves.

Both of these walk-ons will see the field this fall if they stay healthy.

Walk on tradition lives. Who will be the next Matty O?

Posted by: big red 1 on March 29, 2010 8:46PM CST
Watch for the new monster on the offensive line. That is MR. Hardrick. What an excellant report on him. Could be a born leader for the Oline to feed of on. GBR

A little off the take here. Trashman what are you feeling or hearing from people on the arena? At work I am getting about a 60-40 split against the arena on people app. 40,s range and above and almost the opposite on the younger crowd. I think it will come down to how many votes are cast by the college crowde.

Remember rule #1 of coach speak in the spring.

It goes something like this:

Reporter: So, coach, how is Hyped Recruit doing?
Coach: Hyped Recruit is fine. You know, Walk-on A and Walk-on B have really shown some things at that position. I think they could be pushing for time this fall.
[end canned response]

With the women's basketball season over, the men's basketball team about as good as the Y league, the baseball team not playing nearly to their potential and the softball team writhing in misery, can football/volleyball get here soon enough for any of us?

I want to hear about pancakes n how the syrup slips through cavernous holes.

Good to Hear in the article that Legate is getting more comfy in his role as a FB and the game is slowing down for him.

He started out last year missing some fairly easy blocks just running past dudes then realizing he ran past them , then instead of finding someone else to punish trying to peel back n get the dude he ran by and then not blocking anyone at all.

He cleaned that up for the most part by the end of the year and was really coming on as a blocking FB and did show he has hands, I have high hopes for him, he showed some talent last year. He does a real nice job on isos up the middle, I recall, him leveling a middle backer, forget the opponent though.

Give him the dang ball already would ya.

Sheesh!!

Posted by: the "Maxpower" on March 29, 2010 9:46PM CST
Taylor Martinez, or "T-Magic", as he has been glossed is clearly the fastest guy on the field. C Green looks better, but needs to stop aiming the ball. He hasn't made the complete transformation to stud QB yet.

Posted by: rluben on March 29, 2010 9:48PM CST
Step knows what I'm talking about, running past a dude, totally ignoring him, especially on the edge, we've all done it at one time or another worrying about getting to the spot instead of the head off the first man in your path.

And you feel kinda stupid, I think Legate won't make those mistakes now that he knows the offense better and isn't worry ied about getting to point B, but instead knocking the snot out of whoever gets in his path on the way to point B.

Go Big Nasty Fullback's, maybe this is the year they re-emerge and reclaim what is rightfully theirs.

Posted by: Outside The Box on March 29, 2010 9:53PM CST
The shuffle on the mp3 player just played AC/DC's "Back in Black".

Am I the only one who throws the bones anytime I hear that song?

Who was that guy? I don't seem to recall him... was he good? Did he do anything important for the team ever? lol jk :)

Posted by: Outside The Box on March 29, 2010 10:27PM CST
Schlesinger was the guy who stood in the way of Jeff Makovicka's Heisman campaign.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on March 29, 2010 10:28PM CST
rluben))) Yeah... I do. No mans land = the exact time you realize your guy is already behind you. Thats a feeling of helplessness. But like you said... you can't peel back. Got to keep going. He'll get it down with time.

Do we have a QB controversy yet?

Oh yeah, hi!

Posted by: big red 1 on March 29, 2010 10:48PM CST
Sointenly, YUK YUK YUK

Posted by: rluben on March 29, 2010 11:26PM CST
Nope we have a wildcat back controversy.

Cody green will start, no controversy there.

But it's a battle between Rex and T-Mart for the wildcat back, T-Mart will win that battle but they both will play it.

Posted by: NishBigRed on March 29, 2010 11:55PM CST
So I will just throw it out there. Spano will be the man next fall.

PS
How goes it Russ?

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on March 29, 2010 11:56PM CST
rluben:

Idk about the Wildcat back thing...

How well can T-Magic sell a fake back their? We all know T-Rex can sell a fake back there... he did many times in the bowl game.

Plus, T-Magic is a QB and they know that. Putting him back there does two things:

1. Its basically putting another QB in the picture so the defense wont play it differently because they know he'll be able to throw.

2. It slaps whoever is the backup QB in the face (unless its him) and says that the coaches would rather play him... causing division in the team.

I think T-Rex will get it because they'll rarely throw with him back there so the defense will always play the run... and when they do we'll hit em with a pass they don't expect.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on March 30, 2010 12:01AM CST
NishBigRed:

That's possible... Spano was very good back in HS... but it depends on how he's recoverd from his injuries.

I honestly think it's a close race between all 4 guys with Lee and Green just barely ahead.

Who knows... if Carnes is anything like his cousin Tommy Frazier he could play a part next season in the QB race.

Things look bright for our future.

I want to hear about pancakes n how the syrup slips

Rluben for HK, Mickey D's suffices? "slips through my fingers?" Sometimes, I forget about plastic utensils, treat it as finger food?

Rarely, do I eat, at Mickey D's? But when I do, always for mornings free, and wanting their pancakes? Oh, sorry you meant blocking?

Even Little FU, likes the pancakes? (Little, as in Little John, giant sized?)

GBR! Zhou Da Hong! GB12! Zhou Da Shier!

Posted by: rluben on March 30, 2010 1:11AM CST
Exactly why you want T-Mart back there...he's more of a dual threat, quicker, faster and serviceable throwing it, so you'd have to have some kind of arterial brain blockage not to use him there some of the time.

That's exactly why Rex has been working on his passing skills too, so he can be a threat to throw and the defense can't just T off on the run.

Try to keep up people.

Posted by: rluben on March 30, 2010 1:14AM CST
I got ya covered though , not to worry, sometimes Cody, Rex and T-mart are all going to be in at the same time, rotating at teh shotgun, the slot and running back, D won't know what's going on.

The other times it will be T-,art at wildcat, Rex on one side and Roy on the other..the next play it's out of the offset I, then double tights, then stacked I...then back to the wildcat..err corncat.

Posted by: rluben on March 30, 2010 1:15AM CST
Heck I might just put Cody at QB in the shotgun, T-Mart at the slot and Roy n Rex split backs, while I'm at it.

Don't get me started, designing plays for Wats again, he never credits me.

Posted by: drivebyposter on March 30, 2010 7:00AM CST
lube,

You are leading down the path. Not nice of you.

Lee will be the qb. Couple of crazy corn formations now and then.

But the single wing, or the wishbone or the or the tbone are what memories are made of.

Those boys will become proficient at passing and running the team or they will be DB's

You haven't heard a peep because he and his brother Jordan are no longer with the team. Jordan is playing baseball at Creighton and not sure if Justin is on a football team anywhere.

“I don’t buy into that,” Pelini said. “They can swagger all they want — they’ve got to execute. That’s all we care about. I’m not even sure what swagger is. Whatever. You can swagger as long as we win football games.”

*****

Thank God. Swagger is one of those overused, meaningless buzzwords that get tossed around all the time. I'm glad to hear Pelini put it in perspective.

Posted by: PT Husker on March 30, 2010 8:16AM CST
The General, (as named by DBP) has the experience but is probably the least athletic of the candidates. Green is getting better every day but may not get there this year. Martinez is a rocket sled but needs work on his passing skills. Spano is a mark becasue of his injuries.

This is a very nice problem to have. Any of the 4 is capable of leading this team if the O line gels. Each brings different skills which will determine what we do on the field.

But it is still down to the O line.

Posted by: PT Husker on March 30, 2010 8:18AM CST
That and Execution. Kentucy had great individual Athletes. West Virginia out executed them in the team game.

Winner West Virginia.

Posted by: SuperHusker17 on March 30, 2010 8:27AM CST
Justin's playing at UNO I thought. Good to hear updates from practices. I don't know if they actually get in to watch any practices or not but they should try to sneak in a little recorder or something just to hear Bo yell so we don't hear just coach speak from him. But I'm with Bo, when Lou Holtz starts throwing around the word "swagger" shouldn't it lose all credibility? PT, didn't figure you for a Mountaineer, they keeping your head above water on what's left of the bracket?

Posted by: PT Husker on March 30, 2010 8:34AM CST
Super, In my money bracket if they win I win. Worth about $200 bucks.

But they won that game by executing a good TEAM game plan as opposed to relying on Great individual play.

The Kentucky puppies folded in the stretch IMO.

BTW, the Stanford women escaped last night. Felt really sorry for that girl from Xavier that missed the two bunnies at the end.

Posted by: Big Wave Dave on March 30, 2010 8:35AM CST
Fundamentals. Hummmm, something the past staff never talked about. all they talked about was the players having to get better, that it was all their fault. But the players did not get better.

Nice to hear Bo talkin fundamentals and tempo.

But, Bo happy this day don't mean it will last long.

Posted by: PT Husker on March 30, 2010 8:39AM CST
Bo has been preaching execution since he got here. As do most good coaches. If all eleven guys do their job the TEAM will succeed.

Team execution trumps individual brilliance every time.

Posted by: drivebyposter on March 30, 2010 8:46AM CST
This is a key year for lots of reasons

There will be no bets on an inexperienced sophomore qb by Bo.

Posted by: PT Husker on March 30, 2010 8:58AM CST
Drive, If that Sophmore QB proves to be ready to run the team in practice then he will. Same is true for any of the canditates. If there is no clear winner then Lee will start. Nothing that any of us think will chance that.

But it is fun to "discuss" it.

Then again maybe Lee will prove to be the best.

All things are possible.

Posted by: SuperHusker17 on March 30, 2010 9:03AM CST
Yeah, some people wondered about Kentucky being so young and if they got in a close game in the tourney that they might not know how to handle being down since they were blowing everyone out. That's pretty cool though that you could win some money. The funny thing about fundamentals is that you hate to do them as a player because you do them so much but then it's 2nd nature in the game (which, I know, is the whole point) but you don't always realize it until you go back and look at film. Bo's building the base for success

Posted by: PT Husker on March 30, 2010 9:19AM CST
I would not want to be a college basketball coach at a high profile program. Basicly you start over every year.

I see that Aldrich from KU declared for the draft. Both of Kentucky's freshmen will leave this year. The list goes on.

If you think you are good enough straight out of High school then go pro right away. Otherwise, if you commit to a program you should be off limits to the pros for at least 3 years.

But it will never happen.

Posted by: Bryan on March 30, 2010 9:49AM CST
PT,
You've probably heard what Knight has had to say about one-and-out college guys. Don't even have to go to class the second semester, etc...

I was just thinking about the MLB approach to the baseball draft last night, which is what you are proposing. Enter the draft out of high school, or you're off limits for three years.

Maxpower,
Thanks for the reports. I put full faith in them.

Step,
I'm in late, but still gotta say your two-step comment was funny. Just as clever as you thought it was.

Posted by: drivebyposter on March 30, 2010 10:16AM CST
PT,

At least the corn has some tough non-con foes to check it out.

Posted by: Wrestler on March 30, 2010 4:14PM CST
Coach Bo knows, about wins, most important to the swagger? But swagger, denotes attitude and confidence, and most times, that correlates into the wins, that Coach and fans, are seeking? If not, the wins, I presume, also goes the swagger, and more robotic in fashion, with losing consequences?

GBR! Zhou Da Hong! GB12! Zhou Da Shier!

Now, talk about swagger? The Turkey Rustling Gang, has somekind of swagger, for each of those hombres? Not sure, if it's confidence, or the warm milk, they have been drinking?
