Maher honored by Big Ten
Posted by: Steve Sipple on November 14, 2011 at 10:17AM CST

Nebraska junior Brett Maher was honored by the Big Ten as a co-special teams player of the week for his performance Saturday.

He averaged 45.0 yards per punt on eight punts, placing five inside the 20-yard line.

He had two punts of 50 yards or more with a long of 61 that came in the game’s final five minutes.

He converted on a 41-yard field goal and is now 16-of-19 on field goal attempts this season.

He claims his third career weekly Big Ten honor.

Here are this week's honorees.

You get co-defensive Big Ten player of the week by blocking an extra point? Sheesh ... I hope he did more than that during the game to warrant bumping Maher into a "co-" role.

Without Maher, that is an entirely different ball game.

Methinks we will really need Brett to flip the field for us several times this weekend.

Every time I see other teams struggling ('Bama) or losing (Boisie State) with their kicking game, I think how spoiled we are and have been to have such fantastic kickers here over the years. Congrats, Brett! It is certainly a well deserved honor after being called on so frequently on Saturday and delivering when we needed it most.

I am shocked BK didn't earn honors for defensive POW. ... he had to have led the Big Ten in pass breakups on Saturday...

Sorry... coundn't resist...

Love ya though BK... (CATCH THE DAM BALL)

That was a pretty big extra point he blocked, Cajun. :-) Without that block, well that game would've been different.

But congrats to Brett for stepping up to fill some pretty big shoes this year with coolness and poise.

here here, GLHH... IIRC... We beat a good team in a bowl game a long time ago with our kicker. Their coach got with Dr.Tom about it, and the following season, had a schollie kicker on their team.

I'm SO glad the Huskers aren't so short sighted as to not see the benefits of having a great kicker on the team!

Way to go, Brett! Big shoes to fill and you're doing an outstanding job of filling them!

Congratulation Brett "Big Foot" Maher! The kid is so humble and hardworking (surely a compliment to his parents) that many more pre-season and B1G accolades are in his future. Again, congratulations Brett! GBR......git 'er done this weekend.
