LG Williams watching behind back
Posted by: Steve Sipple on August 7, 2010 at 1:09PM CST

Nebraska senior LG Keith Williams went through most of last season declining interview requests.

But he was cheerful Saturday as he met the media before the Huskers' first practice of preseason camp.

The 6-foot-5, 310-pound Williams, of suburban St. Louis, likes the increased competition along the offensive line, he said.

"For an old guy like me, it pushes me," he said. "You try to improve and be that leader I know I can be."

Nebraska returns five offensive linemen who combined to start 53 games during the 2009 season, including seniors Ricky Henry (14), Mike Smith (14), D.J. Jones (3), Marcel Jones (11) and Williams (11).

Juco transfer Jermarcus Hardrick and redshirt freshmen Jeremiah Sirles and Brent Qvale are all potential starters and are essentially certain to play key roles.

Williams also brought up -- unsolicited -- true freshman Andrew Rodriguez, a 6-foot-6, 325-pounder from Aurora.

"He's good," Williams said. "I mean, I got to watch out behind my back."

Just how Barney wants it.

Just what Mr. Williams needs, someone to make him sweat and think a little harder.

Andrew Rodriguez is going to be a MONSTER. Look at the recruits behind our top two lines. Look at the commitments in the pipeline. The talent is astounding. Pelini is gathering GREATNESS to Nebraska.

Go big O line. Show people what you are made of this year.

Sure hope we can afford to redshirt A Rod this year.

Rodriguez is only a freshman so he has got lots to learn. But this kid works hard, he is an athlete and has the size. I would say by the time he gets to be a Senior, he is going to be a great player.

I don't think you can look at the O-line depth chart, without a little grin... you look at the size of these guys and the talent level stacking up for the present and future. There are massive kids lining up back there to get into the mix. This bodes very well for the jump to the Big Ten where it will be imparative to a have talented crop of "big uglies" up front pacing the way. I don't think you could have a depth chart looking much better in that regard. I am excited to watch these guys grow and learn. There is enormous size, enormous talent and hopefully they can all learn a bit of that aggression factor from Ricky Henry... maybe some already possess it. Lookin very good... with more top end O-line commits on the way for next year as well. Fantastic to see.

Why does Bo deserve the credit for rebuilding the O line, you think he has more to do with who is being targeted and who is coming on board than the position coach does or any of the other assistants involved in the process?

Cracks me up how so many people think that one man is doing this stuff all by himself.

Posted by: PT Husker on August 7, 2010 5:39PM CST
Oh, but Rlube We like Bo, And the assistants are the only ones we can target. Specially the offensive ones.

Everybody seem to need a target.

Best players play!

What you mean "needs to get" devil?

We ARE GETTING and do have exactly what it is you propose we need to get, you have seen the last 2 recruiting classes and the current commit list at O Line haven't you?

I think we ARE getting great talent and it is getting coached up and WE WILL start to see the results of that process this year.

Oh it's on!! The pipeline is well on it's way back.

The bad news is... we have bunches of top rated OL recruits coming in.

We don't like highly rated players because they never amount to anything.

We want nothing but 1* recruits. They work harder and haven't hit their ceiling yet.

Posted by: rluben on August 7, 2010 5:55PM CST
Some of the talent they have been recruiting upfront is going to allow them to do some things they probably didn't have the option to do upfront scheme wise the last couple years.

I'm betting by the end of the year there won't be many questions about which direction things are headed in that regard.

I have total confidence in the direction Barney has the O line going and that the O will become a punishingly effective unit over the course of this year and well into the future.

Bring the pain!!

We do love us some under the radar underrated overachievers around here Step, but we also love those highly rated prospects too, especially when they live up to the hype.

It's all good in the neighborhood.

Nebraska's back, that's what matters. And it was done with a mixed bag of upper rated talent combined with walkons and middle rated talent along with an attitude, a culture and coaches who care about getting it done the right way.

We aren't all the way back, but we are well on the way and headed down the right path.

And it is being done the Nebraska way.

Lube

You mean your Boss doesn't call every shot, handle every aspect of your business?

I'm sure Bo is the only one on this staff making decisions that effect the outcome of practice and games. There's no way he would think to surround himself with people capable of making great decisions....it's all Bo baby...just like it was all T.O. and Bob they had no help either!

Posted by: big red 1 on August 7, 2010 7:12PM CST
Low: I don't think that is quite right. T.O. assistants had much input and Bo's assistants have much input. I don't think either 1 called it 100%. Just a thought.
