LB Lawrence's career over
Posted by: Steve Sipple on October 22, 2009 at 5:28PM CST

Husker junior LB Blake Lawrence has decided to step away from the game after suffering his fourth concussion in the past 18 months.

Lawrence released his own statement about his departure Thursday.

"I am blessed to have been able to play for the greatest football team in college history," Lawrence said. "Thank you to all who made it possible, and thank you for your support through this process."

Lawrence started the first two games this season at weakside linebacker but didn't play in three of the past four contests.

BC will have more soon.

Sorry to hear of you injury, best in the future to you!!

Stay strong Blake.

Good Luck Blake! It was an HONOR to watch you play> BAM!~

Posted by: NewfieFan on October 22, 2009 5:40PM CST
Now there it is! There's the difference for me! Someone like Blake who laid it out there every day, EVERY DAY. I've been sitting on the sidelines, listening to the meanderings and mutterings of the truly affected fans about Green and Lee and Watson and the offense and BO, and now there's this. For those who feel they've earned the right BOO, slander (beceause that's what a lot of it amounts to), or Arm Chair quarterback, remember Watson's words...You've never played (which equals you never spilled the blood so you don't know what it costs). In Blake's eyes, it cost too much, but he gave everything anyways. Zac Lee is right too, none of us are in the dressing rooms, the film rooms, the meetings and they go through all of the blood and tears. Yet a so-called 'Fan' knows better. Fans know NOTHING, except when and where to spend their money and how to criticize. I feel sorry for this team! I used to love Nebraska fans for their loyalty. What I don't like about them is how they beat up on certain individuals because of LACK of understanding and NO patience. Good Luck, Blake! You're a helluva young man!

Posted by: Islander/Husker on October 22, 2009 5:43PM CST
Wish him well, that's just tough. He is a class act all the way. I am sure he will be successful in whatever he choses do do. Now all he has to do is focus on continuing his education. Plus he will be stepping out of the fish bowl. Hopefully he can continue to help us on the sidelines. You can tell he bleeds Husker Red.

I Salute you Blake for giving it your all.

Posted by: bruNo on October 22, 2009 5:46PM CST
Wow, that's really too bad, I hadn't realized he been getting the concussions.

He will be missed.

Posted by: huskers4_eva on October 22, 2009 5:46PM CST
kind of an ignorant statement there newfiefan. But i guess you know better, so that gives you the right to say that about the fans of nebraska.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on October 22, 2009 5:50PM CST
Blake

Sorry to hear your career is cut short. Study hard, get your degree and keep bleeding red!

Posted by: NewfieFan on October 22, 2009 5:54PM CST
Well, huskers4...I'm not from Nebraska, so I guess I have a right to say something about Nebraska fans, right? After all, many who are not on the team seem to have a right to criticize what goes on behind the locker room doors, right? Quid pro quo...
...Don't get me wrong, I'm Red as Red is on here. And I have many, many Husker fans in here too. I just don't have much time for people who have already run out of patience already. It's a long, long season.
...My statement wasn't ignorant, by the way, it was very well measured based upon the 1,000 or so rants I've read on here since the Tech Game. It's my cross to bear!

Posted by: Islander/Husker on October 22, 2009 5:55PM CST
Newfie ny good friend, so good to see your again. I have so missed your insight, your humor and most of all your passion for the Huskers. Sometimes fans think they all know more that the coaches. I know I don't. Many fans get upset when players point fingers at others. Those fans who second guess all the time, should follow that advice, if your going to point, point it at yourself.

Posted by: Husker4Life on October 22, 2009 5:57PM CST
You will be missed Blake! I read Peter King's article on concussions and this is nothing to mess around with. I am glad he made this decision as it is the right one. I will miss watching him play though.

Posted by: Ndomitable on October 22, 2009 5:59PM CST
Best wishes Mr. Lawrence. You have a bright future. Thank you for contributing to the team and for being a student/athlete worthy of emulating.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on October 22, 2009 5:59PM CST
Hey, I will back Newfie 100%. He is good stock, and has had my back several times on the LITR from several pretty vicious Trolls. He is one of us a true Husker fan and a Patriot.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on October 22, 2009 6:00PM CST
Huskers4

Trust me Newfie has been on this blog for a long time and has earned the right to speak his mind.

Newfie
As always, well thought out and honest to a fault.....good to see you back to communicating with us.

Posted by: Husker4Life on October 22, 2009 6:00PM CST
NewfieFan & Islander/Husker you are right. Anyone who boos these kids playing their hearts out is just plain rude and does not understand the meaning of sportmanship. Our players hold themselves to high standards and it is about time Husker fans did too.

Posted by: NewfieFan on October 22, 2009 6:01PM CST
Islander...so good, my friend to hear you're 'still at your station'!!!!
...I'm finding more time to read on here lately, now that I've almost caught up at home! I miss, RinGuam, RinW though...See 'Luber' on here from time to time..What d'ya'll think? Are people running out of patience already? There are other people on the team playing hurt too. I honestly think Roy is more hurt than is reported, but with the loss of Rex, the team is not about to let another team get a leg up on that. Bo has his team's back - Period! Sounds like a good general to me!

Posted by: Islander/Husker on October 22, 2009 6:02PM CST
Yeah, he has had a quire a few concussions. No use risking more and permanent damage. Head Injuries are nothing to mess with.

Posted by: NewfieFan on October 22, 2009 6:08PM CST
Low - C...great to make your acquaintance - you too Huskers4!
...I won't bore you with the details, but Islander and I have had some great past posts together, eh Islander?? Well, pretty soon I'll be back to 'scrapin' my driveway' as winter is coming close!
...I think this team's psyche is the most fragile part of this whole process that Bo refers to. Fans seldom get that part of sports psychology. This team had an attitude comin' in this season, but two setbacks can challenge a team, especially when there are injuries, such as Blake's, involved. Hopefully, they can use this as a rallying cry! 'Let's win this one for the Gipper'??

Posted by: Islander/Husker on October 22, 2009 6:10PM CST
Newfie, I don't know whether you were around in August when the LITR put up a first try on a new design and format. It was broken and badly, and we lost some regular posters because of the frustrations and slowness. Redinbend has posted several time, I think he will be back in the states some time in the near future. RedinWest, he has not been on since August. Hope he comes back. But we have had some very good new posters, who add a lot to the dialgue. But they can't get rid of me though, I just keep hanging around. This is still the best Husker blog around, bar none in my view.

Posted by: Crazy Jack on October 22, 2009 6:11PM CST
Newfie: you assume too much like we are all armchair QB's, never played a down. Of course only a true a$$ like yourself would be posting saying "LOOKIE AT ME I AM A DIP SH--" on a article to honor a fellow Husker player.

Posted by: Ray in Bellevue on October 22, 2009 6:11PM CST
NewfieFan. I am one of those who have been critical of Lee and others lately, and your comments struck home pretty good. You are absolutely right. Most fans have no knowledge of what the players and coaches are going through to win these games, like Blake. We need to all step back, especially me, and show some empathy and patience. Thank you for your insight. It came at a good time.

Posted by: NewfieFan on October 22, 2009 6:12PM CST
...And Sip, if you're in here (and it's true you played), share a little insight about what it takes for a team to bounce back from this kinda thing, especially when the O or D is struggling! Isn't it a tough deal all around? Won't an impatient fan base just add to all of this? Isn't that why Bo and Wats are trying to take all of the heat? Isn't that what true leadership does, instead of pandering to the press or the fan base?

Posted by: Husker4Life on October 22, 2009 6:13PM CST
Great to make your aquaintance too Newfie! You and Islander sure make a lot of sense on your posts. I do like the resiliency of these kids though and they play hard so they definitely can be successful!

Posted by: Low Country Husker on October 22, 2009 6:13PM CST
Off subject but did you all see Ahman Green signed with the Packers again....I wish him nothing but success it would be great to see him be able to capture the running records he is so close to getting there.

Posted by: Husker4Life on October 22, 2009 6:17PM CST
Ray we all make mistakes. As long as we have friends around to help us see them and we then see them we will be ok. I have been in your shoes too!

Posted by: NewfieFan on October 22, 2009 6:17PM CST
Ray...we haven't spokin' in a while...It's not that I blame anyone for speaking out, and I understand there's frustration, but wow....is it all worth it, when you look at what Blake's family is facing today? You're right, it's all about perspective, isn't it..
...Crazy Jack....My avatar is a memorial to the fallen soldier at Kandahar Airfield. Don't talk to me about what it takes to honour someone. Blake's circumstances I empathize with...You, on the other hand, are pretty good at making a few assumptions yourself. Don't bother with the dollar signs...I know how to spell!

Posted by: Husker4Life on October 22, 2009 6:19PM CST
LCH I saw that about Ahman Green too. I am with you. I hope he breaks those records! Great to see him back with the Pack!

Posted by: Husker4Life on October 22, 2009 6:23PM CST
Wow Crazy Jack got a lot of garbage spewing there. I don't think we need to resort to that. Newfie wasn't doing that at all. He just wants the players to be treated right. There is nothing wrong with that especially in an article to honor a player.

Posted by: NewfieFan on October 22, 2009 6:23PM CST
I know one thing...I'm sure Blake's presence on the sideline would be a HUGE lift to this team! Hopefully he makes it to all of the games (especially the Bowl!)....Go Big Blake!

Posted by: NewfieFan on October 22, 2009 6:29PM CST
Well Huskers faithful, gotta go make a tea! Keep the faith! I say again, Keep the faith!
...Crazy Jack, you come back at me anytime...I don't hold grudges, and if you did play, give us some details on another more appropriate blog, like say, 'quick fixes for armchair QBs' (just kiddin' Bro - I come in peace)!

Posted by: Husker4Life on October 22, 2009 6:30PM CST
Thanks Newfie! I think I am gone too. I look forward to more blogs with you and Islander!

sheesh if the locker room is like this blog there is no team in team.

Hey you are either a corn fan or you are not. If you are then no booing allowed period.

Now back to the regular scheduled progam.

This is a good kid. Keep the faith young one. You have a long life ahead. Thanks for being you.

Low-C...Just got back in Jun! They have pavement now, can you believe? See??? Things can get better, can't they?
...very pleased to meet you! Wished I'd met a real NU fan while there...worked with many of your country folk! They thought I was crazy for my devotion to Big Red...Hell, I spent most of New Years trying to download every video clip I could get of the Clemson game!....ahhh, those memories.
...What d'ya think, these kids gonna get this thing back on track for themselves?? There's only so much a coach can do.

Posted by: PT Husker on October 22, 2009 6:42PM CST
Newfie, You don't know me, and i have not had the pleasure of much inter action with you. Sorry you will not be able to make it to the OU game. It would have been an honer to share a seat with you. But that is the way things go. I am now working on IH to take your place.
good sub don't you think??

Posted by: NewfieFan on October 22, 2009 6:46PM CST
PT....I have read many of your posts...I won't make OU this year, but NEXT you should be assured that I'll be bustin' my butt to get there! You keep the faith, too, ya hear!

Posted by: Ray in Bellevue on October 22, 2009 6:54PM CST
NewfieFan.

I think that many fans are more understanding of other sports, ie, volleyball. For example, this season, our volleyball team which is a perennial Big 12 champion, national champion contender, and top 5 program has fallen on the hard times of a rebuilding year. But, I have yet to read a truly unkind word about the coach or the players. Everything written is constructive in nature with an insight into the difficulty of integrating freshmen into a lineup dependent upon building trust and relationships. Sure, we complain about errors in serving, passing, and attacking, and sure, certain players are singled out at times for poor performance, but the tone of the criticism is uniformily civil.

Nebraska volleyball has become such an institution that the pressure to succeed is enormous. The pain of losing is unbearable. And the volleyball fans are no better than the football fans, many of whom are the same, but the fan response to adversity seems muted by the culture of the program. Some will say a woman's sport will have more fan restraint, and maybe that is part of the society in which we live. But, hopefully, we can have a little more restraint in our response to the football program which is also still in the process of rebuilding.

Newfie

IMO they never fell off track....they slowed, they lost a little steam, but they will be fine. 2nd year of a new coach I think NU is doing just fine. I understand growing pains....I was a little disheartened when I witnessed what appeared to be a defeatus attitude last week but that is easily overcome with the right amount of enthusiasm and a kiwi injection to those that need it!

Posted by: Miller on October 22, 2009 6:54PM CST
Wow this is just horrible for this kid. I wish him the best and thanks for playing for the huskers and for all that you did for the team. This must be devastating to this young man!

Posted by: huskers4_eva on October 22, 2009 7:03PM CST
Newfie, nebraska fans have the right to their opinion all they want. They want to criticize their teams performance then they should be able too. The fans pay the bills (coaches salaries, facilities, ect.) Bo knows their opinions don't matter, but if voicing an opinion makes them feel better at the end of the day then let them voice away. I love Bo and his staff. I think they have what it takes. But come on Newfie, fans showing this kind of intensity and tenacity for wanting to have their players and team do well is what makes college football great. If we want to pat a player on his back and give him an ice cream every time he screws up, this sport would just plain suck. Come on Newfie show a little fire. Atleast Bo does on the side lines with the refs sometimes. Give me a break.

Posted by: jeromethechicken on October 22, 2009 7:05PM CST
What a damn shame. This kid is the very definition of what it means to be a student athlete. I wish him luck in his feature academic endeavours.

Posted by: drivebyposter on October 22, 2009 7:17PM CST
... Nebraska fans have the right to their opinion all they want...

Just like Colorado fans do okay?

So whats yur point? You wanna be like them and boo and then boo and then boo?

Sorry, but "I paid my sixty bucks and I'll do what I want don't" cut it.

Hey rag on the blog if you want, it's where anonymous is king."

But don't pick on the kids regardless where you are.

Coaches making millions are fair game. It is their "product".

But no booing.

It is not a trait of corn fans. And I won't stand for it.

So there.

Posted by: NewfieFan on October 22, 2009 7:41PM CST
Huskers4...agree, freedom of speech, correct? But let he hath NO sin cast the first stone...besides, freedom of speech also allows the fans to criticize and be criticized, right?

Posted by: JTHF on October 22, 2009 7:46PM CST
NewfieFan, I agree with you. No need to boo the players or rag on them. Most of the time they are trying the hardest to win. Anyone who thinks they don't want to win are wrong. I don't comment all the time but I read the comments most days. I was wondering where some of the old posters went. Glad to have some of you back. The Huskers will be ready to play Saturday !!

Posted by: Drill Instructor on October 22, 2009 7:46PM CST
Newfie and the rest of you in that profession.....You guys are twice the soldiers we were and believe me, I appreciate you more than you know.

I also appreciate those young men who bust their butts every day to entertain us. So sorry that some are forced to give it up after being so dedicated and giving so much for NU.

Posted by: bruNo on October 22, 2009 7:47PM CST
I was really surprised to hear the booing @ the TT game, on TV that is.

I was hoping most of it was directed @ the refs, but I guess it was going to the team too.

I dunno, given it was our 1st game where the O really wasn't getting it done, I felt the booing was rather premature in the season.

Posted by: NewfieFan on October 22, 2009 7:55PM CST
Hey, DI...! You know and I know, it's about team work...the only way to really measure someone's worth is to see who's standing beside you when the chips are down...sound familiar...I think a lot of the kids on our team get this...too bad some of the fans don't!...
...If it's you in the avatar, you look like someone I could chew sand with. GBR!

Posted by: huskers4_eva on October 22, 2009 8:11PM CST
Nothing personal guys, but i think this is being taken way out of proportion. No ones booing any of the players or coaches. What they were booing Saturday were the refs. They just happened to be going out at the same time as the team. Also, stop treating these players like little kids. Bo wants his players to be men and start being accountable then they have got to accept being criticized. I mean come on, oh boo hoo, the fans thought i didn't play well, let me cry on someones shoulder. Seriously, you think Florida and SEC teams fans are gonna cut their players slack. They want perfection and if they don't get it their gonna let the players know one way or another. This is college football not ballet guys.

Posted by: bruNo on October 22, 2009 8:12PM CST
yea, thats what I thought, they were booing the refs at halftime, not the team.

But seems there were some boobirds in the 2nd half too, right? Well, there were some bad calls there too as I recall.

Posted by: Mentally Red on October 22, 2009 8:23PM CST
For a kid like him, there are many exciting possibilities left in life. Football is only one small part of who he is. He absolutely is making the right choice.

And by the way, DON'T make this about the fans or the media. This is about a kid who wanted to play for our team, but can't and is now moving on to the next phase of his life. It has absolutely nothing to do with booing or criticism of the team.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on October 22, 2009 8:52PM CST
Four concussions in 18 months...WOW! I have a feeling that a great many people don't understand the level of sacrafice that Mr. Lawrence has laid out there. He probably should have been done after the third one. Concussions are not to be messed around with, very serious issues later in life and I am so hoping that he doesn't have issues to deal with later on. I can't express the degree of gratitude that I have for his efforts. If you really think about it Blake Lawrence laid his life on the line for Husker Nation...think about it.

Booing your team is like cheering for their opponent.

Posted by: Hskerfn on October 23, 2009 11:07AM CST
Newfilefan and IslanderHusker, all your sanctimonious comments on the Husker Fans booing the players, how much do you know about it? you heard a huge boo ing during the game and automatically you think they're booing the team or the coaches. That BIG boo was not at either. If you listen to commentary, then you know that Husker Fans know the game. They know what's going on. If you watched the game at all, then you realized the the officiating was absolutely terrible!!! I'm wondering if I've ever seen such bad officiating? Well, those intelligent Husker Fans were booing thr Officials and I can't blame them! Calls after the fact... anticpatory calls... light taps!!! Consistant Play calling is all anyone wants! So gentlemen, get your facts straight and I'd suggest not saying anything if you don't know the facts. I congratulate you on your Husker Passion. Use it wisely! Go Huskers!
