Hoke making waves
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on February 20, 2012 at 4:31PM CST
Michigan coach Brady Hoke could not have envisioned a much better start to his time as the head man in Ann Arbor.

First there was all the marveling by the locals about the fact the guy wears short sleeves on the sidelines even when mother would suggest a winter coat. Then there's that 11-2 season, which included a Sugar Bowl victory.

And now Hoke has gone full cannonball into this recruiting season. Be sure they've noticed the splash in Ohio.

If you weren't aware, the Wolverines had quite the recruiting weekend, gaining eight commitments after their junior day. They already have 11 in their class, which is seven more than the next Big Ten team, Ohio State.

It was sort of the perfect storm for Michigan: Not only could Wolverine coaches sell the momentum they feel they have from last season. They also had the perfect setup this weekend, with great buzz on the campus with the Michigan-Ohio State basketball game.

Now is where we remind that there are no bonus points given for those who assemble their class the quickest. Early signees don't always equal success on a football field. Ask Texas.

Also, for all the noise Michigan made this weekend, the Wolverines actually are going to probably end up with a smaller recruiting class this year than most. Maybe 18 or 19 signees, similar to the situation Nebraska was in with the 2012 past class. So UM doesn't have a ton of open slots.

And you can be certain many of the newest Michigan commits knew that when visiting this weekend, which is one reason you probably saw the Wolverines produce such a haul. When a class is filling up fast, you best secure your spot.

That's not to take anything away from Hoke. He has to be feeling pretty swell about the perceived quality in his class right about now. Of his 11 commits, 10 have four stars according to Rivals.com, and three of those have come from under Urban Meyer's nose in Ohio.

Be certain that it's been noted by Michigan's biggest rival.

Hmm.

8 is enough.

Still it's a long way to signing day. Now I like Hoke, but having the PR and recruiting hype does not always equal success. Witness Bill Callahan.

Spring practice is just around the corner.

And you can bet the Meyers will go hard at some of those kids before the recruiting years is done, so stay tuned.

until we field a team that doesnt get completeley humiliated by him I got nothing to say,he almost beat us with Ball State,I'm hoping he moves on very quickly because he's a helluva coach IMO.

Now if all those jr recruits could play next fall.. we would annoit Meechigan #1..

Posted by: BuzzMc on February 20, 2012 5:55PM CST
That is what happens when you hire proven experienced assistants that win in prior places with their guys. Mattison the DC was rivals recruiter of the year...

Look at returning starters and holes to fill on michigan's roster & Nebraska's. Conclusion? The Huskers will beat michigan in Lincoln this fall, bet the kids' college fund on it.

Posted by: Ray in Bellevue on February 20, 2012 6:08PM CST
I guess that we aren't Michigan's biggest rival. But, that's ok, we still have Iowa. I wonder if Bo noticed all of those Michigan commits. Probably not.

Posted by: MercilessOne on February 20, 2012 6:08PM CST
I hate to say it, but it's looking to me more and more like Ohio State & Michigan will be the class of the B1G for the foreseeable future ... while the Huskers will continue to be spectators.

(Sigh.)

You can tell that from one season in our new conference? Please, all of you instant gratification clowns really amuse me. I see NOTHING that proves to me that michigan or ohio st are outclassing us in the Big Ten, or that they have the momentum to start doing so. We had a young team facing 8 new conference opponents this past fall, so make your long-term judgments wisely. Will all of you doomsday Husker fans be reversing field this fall when a more experienced Husker team fares MUCH better in their new conference?

ray in hickville belleview is doing anything other than actually following football again. Make sure you are back on this blog come fall, with your pessimistic viewpoints and flawed logic to back them up. I will enjoy putting you in your place, hillbilly boy.

Leave the intelligent commentary to the LJS staff and those of us who actually make a living from the game. Most of the clowns on this blog like to chit chat with their LITR "girlfriends" about recipes & tv shows. We'll handle the legitimate football talk, ladies.

I'm with you IM............I checked the stats for Iowa last year and found that of the 4 teams they played with a QB running threat (NW, NE, MI, MN) none of them got 100 yds rushing on them. Persa was the most with 76, Robinson had 55.

We just happened to poach a coach from said team that will hopefully help shore up our weakness against such QBs.

Posted by: black&bluehusker on February 20, 2012 6:32PM CST
MercilessOne....Since when haven't OSU and MU been the class of the B1G. Sure MU was down for a few years when they had the wrong coach, much like NU under Callahan.

What a difference having the right coach makes.

Do we have the right coach?

Dunno!

Hip Hop

I am looking forward to Michigan getting beat by Nebraska, as you predict, and if it happens you will get full credit, while I am dutifully put in my place in hillbilly boy hickville. But, I would advise others not to bet their college funds just yet since Robinson still has one more year.

is Shoelace gone?if he's still there we stand NO chance, none, next years defense will be the same defense MINUS LAVONTE DAVID...and we're going to beat Michigan, get serious, and no offense but I work with people every day that make a living doing what they do and they suck at it so lets calm down with the insults,I know a couple of fans on here that are alot smarter than some of the guys at LJS or the OWH.

At the Michigan's, Ohio States, Alabamas, and LSU, it is all about closing top line players often, and early.

If you want a spot on the bus, get on now, or risk not having a seat.

At Nebraska, Bo has taken the soft sell approach, letting top talent know they can shop and there will still be a seat on the bus.

Only trouble with Bo's approach is, many chose to go elsewhere.

The end game is, Bo has only delivered 4 loss teams and minor bowls.

Conference championships and BCS bowls?

Michigan and Ohio State except nothing less, and both are on the mission to play for championships, and it is a arms race to the top.

Bo and his staff are up againest top alpha recruiters who know how to close and win big games.

Maybe the Gator Bowl or Cap One Bowl is the new normal.

Does make one wonder how nebraska mightily beat the two teams who not only beat Michigan, but beat them with ease. For some reason the Big Ten Network replayed the Michigan game last week and really, it was a game until the a couple minutes to go in the third, even with all the retarted penalties and turnovers.

Posted by: K-ZooHusker on February 20, 2012 7:29PM CST
Not to mention the horrendous "roughing" the kicker call late in the 3rd that pretty much was the final dager.

Tommy appears to be the one they've been hoping for...we'll see, and the sooner he gets to Link the better...but this guy may once again shatter some of the "$tar Illusion" that some are so enamored with.

for what we do, he appears possibly the perfect fit. he reminds me of other very good Frosh/Soph QBs at the same point in their careers...read as: just potential until they do it for DONU.

Yes, LSkid, its all speculation, but the kid has done well so far, he has the speed, size, and arm, now its just a matter if he can adapt to the college game. He seems very mature, for his age, see what can happen under the big bright lights.

As a Redskins' fan, let me tell you about what the "offseason" trophy will get you... and we're a year away from any of those guys signing a LoI.

Posted by: damakota on February 20, 2012 9:32PM CST
We have brought in what appears to be talented and promising offensive linemen in these past two recruiting classes. They will be true freshman and reshirt freshman, with the exception of the Moore kid. Can Barney and his assistants coach these kids up to the point that we - the Cornhuskers that is - establish a bruising and punishing offensove line reputation once again? An offensive line that refuses to be pushed around and dominated; but dominates in return.

Will Spencer Long emerge as the new starting center this spring and fall. It would be nice to have a center who is 6' 4" and 300 pounds plus; a center who refuses to be bullied! The kid certainly has the smarts to be able to make the blocking calls on all the running and passing plays.

It all starts up front.

10 4*s out of 11, I'd say thats a pretty excellent average.

El Supremo

I bet if we moved a certain WR to QB, we would have our Robinson look alike. Remember that Robinson was originally recruited as an athlete at Michigan. But, I guess it just isn't in the magic cards. We will stick with Taylor until the bitter end.

Posted by: Blackshirtsdef on February 21, 2012 6:43AM CST
I am appalled to hear people really think a true freshman can walk on the field to take over at quarterback and win......you are the same fans that scream cry after every loss, advocate for coaching changes everytime theres a loss, and seem to think the world revolves around you. Here's reality for you all.....IT's NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN!

Armstrong may be good, but at this time he's red-shirt good.....I know Callahan did a number on all of us, but get over it. There are meetings and groups out there that can help with some of these conditions.

IM....your right, and I'm not here to swap recipes.

Well in the recruit of T-Arm.. he looks the part of a slippery option Qb.. but from his highlights it looked like mainly out of read option formation.. but his lateral moves are very quick, quicker than TM.. give him a year.. he might push TM a bit.. I know it would be hard to replace a four year starter, he might get some action.. he has plenty of Arm.. need see how accurate it is

Brian-

Any word on those that came this weekend to our junior day?

There was a nice bunch of talent here over the weekend.

Well, we can expect UM and tOSU to have top 10 recruiting classes every year. But no one said life would be easy.

The interesting thing about Hoke is that he won 11 games and a BCS bowl running RichRod's offense (or at least, many of RichRod's plays). Hoke's offense is pro style, pass first offense. But because of Robinson is not a pocket passer, Hoke changed to fit his personnel.

The game in Lincoln this year will be huge. Mich is going to be good for years to come. We need to establish an intimidation factor with regards to playing in Lincoln.

I.M.HIP totally agree with you,but it does no good to say it. Those who piss and moan will continue to do it,We could win every game and they would find something to piss and moan about,

I just continue to root for my Huskers, win or lose and let them cry about it and holler for a coach to be fired or that the sky is falling. Ray is Ray he's a fan, just wants results before he can fully get behind them, the rest are professional whiners, thats how they live their life.

They say the most popular player is the second team QB. This just shows how advanced NU fans are. Instead of the backup QB, our is the WR who once played QB and dropped from starter to backup at WR because he wasn't giving maximum effort in practice....acknowledged by him.

I guess I'm just blind that it isn't obvious that a freshman WR who got sat down should have been our starting QB. I'm sure JT learned from last year, but many fans have not.

Thanks for the empathy! I do admit that I overuse the "Seeing is believing" viewpoint but it does provide a point of discussion. I would rather be pleasantly suprised with low expectations rather than disappointed following a round of koolaid. And, of course, the blog is a fun thing which we should all enjoy without getting too stressed out. Go Huskers!

I agree with you 100%. I think that Turner could be another Robinson at QB, if only given that chance. But maybe, JT is thinking long range about a possible pro career. There must be some reason that isn't apparent to us.

Posted by: Silicon Valley Husker on February 21, 2012 1:44PM CST
Ray.....I think he needs to pick a position and work on it. He noted that he let up last year. Is that what we want the starting QB to do?

The camaraderie of fandom is breathless, at this time of the off season?

And predictions for what's pending runs the full gamut, of what could possiblly transpire?

I see a more productive season than one past? As the year of maturing, for both coaches and players will bring about a volition for execution or performance, that exceeds season past?

Recruiting for a season, has to correlate also with what is retained on the roster, for complimenting or inverse of ineptness, without much impact to current season?

I think NU's cupboard is stocked for season pending, with enough of difference makers and enhanced with redshirts now eligible and a few recent recruits, for the adding prowse to the mix of what was returning in a uplifting way?

I think the ones, with a more pessimistic view to NU's perceived plight, also tend to exaggerate the opponents upcoming and their actual levels of might or superiority, as a way of convincing others for their fatal prognosis of what will happen to the Huskers?

Is the sky falling, with the claimed rising of recruiting results for both Michigan and Ohio State, really?

Or does the challenge on the field and what really is destined for outcome, combine alot more than just recruiting perceptions now?

Who really knows the outcome, until they play head to head and then outcome determined on the field of play? Sth. D1 FB, is also missing to this pt. until the establishment of real playoffs?

So a little surreal for ones, stating intelligent thinking or lack of based on differing viewpts.?

Of course, the ones that miss their respective predictions for future, will morph into the other side of pts. of view, as in some of the multiple personalities that pop up on here from time to time?

The saga of the blog being ridiculous now, whatever your viewpt. as if discovered wrong, there's always the changing to another personality for continuation I suppose?

I simply think, that season pending will equate into sth. better than season past and also be a prelude for 2013 season of a fantastic result?

And if I am wrong, I will remain the same optimistic self as usual, as it is more gratifying to me in life, to stay on that side of the line for life's outlooks, than the other side of inverse thinking?

Quarter past 6 am Wed. here in HK? No quota today?

Got to scurry early to school today, later?

Go Pot Bellied Pigs!

Remember season pending is mutually exclusive from season past?

Got to bike to school, as KW has her mini car and I have a bike, reversal to importance in our nontraditional family?

ya'd think with her fame and fortune she would be able to buy you a smart car too--controlling me thinks.

Posted by: Wrestler on February 22, 2012 1:34AM CST
Bourne, maybe? But more a choice of a different style of life thing for me?

Let me use the analogy of when in Springs at OTC for years there? As there was a influx of ones selling their high priced homes in CA. and relocating to Co. Springs?

Buying nice homes up in mtns. west of Springs, sometimes a hour or so car time away? Nothing for ones in CA. as they go by time for destinations?

So up in rustic settings and less amenities, more the austere lifestyle of location and living amongst others, choosing this from Colorado partly due to what they could afford?

So dirt roads and difficult routes for getting to their living houses and then wanting paved roads to the most remote areas and transforming the austere life into one of suburbia, in direct conflict to local native residents and their different choosing of livingstyles?

Meaning, I live in HK a densely populated city and this part of the world has super public transportation for the navigating around? And I can get to and fro to university with these transports quite easily and to my health club, where KW needs a car more to where her company is located? One car is enough for HK? We both bicycle for recreation as it fits our lifestyle?

Amazing how you can give up things from America in another environment for the living? And grow quite comfortable with that fact? HK is much different from the midwest USA and how one lives?

Adaptation to where you land in this world is part of the accepting the ways, of that particular society?

I think Los could speak to what, I'm am trying to depict as well?

So controlling not sure, but very content with our relationship and how it works and also content with the living in HK, as well?
