High praise for Hagg
Posted by: Steve Sipple on July 20, 2010 at 8:22PM CST
I just caught Lane Grindle's excellent "Sports Nightly" interview with Nebraska defensive backs coach Marvin Sanders.

I was driving home as I listened, so I'll have to paraphrase. But it was very interesting to hear Sanders say that if he were starting a defense from scratch, and had his pick of players, he'd select Eric Hagg first.

Not Prince Amukamara. Not Jared Crick.

Sanders praised Hagg's athleticism and versatility, saying the 6-foot-2 , 210-pound senior can play cornerback, safety, nickel or linebacker. NU's "peso" defense will allow Hagg to remain on the field on every down.

Amukamara and Crick are receiving a lot of preseason hyperbole -- well-deserved, for sure. Meantime, Hagg seems to fly under the radar, though not in Sanders' eyes.

He was crazy-good this last year. All except the Iowa State game when he got "lost" on the 50 yard TD bomb. Oh well, I'll give him a pass based on the rest of his season...

Posted by: Blackshirtsdef on July 20, 2010 8:40PM CST
I don't know what crazy-good means...but guess it's somewhere near livin "High on the Hagg"

GBR!!

All hail Hagg. I think he is going to have a monster year. Watch out Texas because we are on your six. GBR

With a lights out crazy good secondary,
The LBs will jobbing for play time specially when there in the pesos the LBs should be solid a the d-line should actually be better this coming year.

With an average offense the Husker should be top 20.

Posted by: TomOs on July 20, 2010 8:56PM CST
Hagg was good.. but there was a spark plug in there named.. Jomes.. with Hagg, Prince, and Dennard.. we are well set.. hard to pick anyone.. but I sure like this combination on the 2nd and 3rd level..

Posted by: TomOs on July 20, 2010 8:57PM CST
I meant Gomes..

Nish, when I asked if you were in I meant the Fantasy thing. The secondary will be one of the best in the country.

Mark it down.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on July 20, 2010 9:10PM CST
I never realized Bucky was as great as he is... till I saw that live action video. He's something else. He's special when it comes to mascots. One of the best. Grade A Top-O-the-line.

Posted by: PT Husker on July 20, 2010 9:10PM CST
Gonna Need some tips. do you pick defensive players or offense only?

Posted by: Trashman on July 20, 2010 9:13PM CST
BR1

Not bad, not great. So about like usual.

Shot a 79 in Tulsa. Course was a wreck due to a severe winter kill so I was told.

Driver is struggling. Everything else is top notch.

Especially Billy Baroo.

PT,
I have done fantasy football, never paid to play.
Just between some fellas at work.

It can get kind of crazy.
I had Payton Manning one year so I've had some luck.
It there going to be a LITR league

Posted by: PT Husker on July 20, 2010 9:19PM CST
Supersaid he would start one if he had the interest. Can't do much worse than the Basketball thing.

Posted by: NishBigRed on July 20, 2010 9:25PM CST
Yeah I would play with you guys.

You end up rooting for players on teams you can't stand.

My luck I would end up getting Tony Romeo or a receiver from the Cowboys.
At least I don't have to worry about getting TO

Go like Bo!

Get the defense up first!
Get a kicker, set back and let the defense knock'em down, let the kicker win it with no time left.

PT))) If you are playing... then I can't tell you s***. You'll have to figure it out on your own.

Just kidding.

Welp... if it's a 10 team league... there is no depth problems. But a 12 team league gets kinda dicey.

Also... the way the league is scored makes a huge difference. If the QB's get 1 point per 20 yards... they can carry your team. 1 point per 25 yards... and they are more like everybody else. And if you get extra points for long TD's.... guys like Chris Johnson and Desean Jackson become even more popular.

You have to look at it like this. There are 64 starting WR's in the NFL. But some teams 3rd WR's are better than others #1's. Like say... the Colts 3rd guy... whether it be Gonzalez or Garcon... is likely gonna be better than the jags #1 WR... simply because Garrard has no noticeable report with Mike Sims Walker or whomever. Even guys like Lee Evans who are terrific players... have trouble in fantasy because they have all those crapbag QB's in Buffalo.

Also... there are 32 starting RB's. But if you sit down and make a list of true featured RB's... the list is pretty damn short. Lot's of RB by committee in the NFL. True #1 RB's are gone in a flash during fantasy drafts.

Thats a good start.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on July 20, 2010 9:48PM CST
Also... usually no defensive players. But you will choose a defense/special teams. Punt and KO returns are counted like defensive TD's.

Your roster will look something like this.

2 QB's

5 RB's

5 WR's

2 TE's

2 D/ST

And a K or two.

You decide who stars by bye weeks and match ups.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on July 20, 2010 9:49PM CST
stars = starts

Howis the draft order decieded?

Posted by: drivebyposter on July 20, 2010 9:52PM CST
stepn,

When you drop a "t" it is time to "un-bogart"

Posted by: Trashman on July 20, 2010 9:54PM CST
PT

That's a pretty good synopsis. One needs to understand the League Rules very well.

Super should pay attention too.

My winning team last year (in a 12 team league) had respectable RBs but not killer (Grant, S Jackson), but carried by the Schaub-Johnson connection along with Marshall and a nice early add in Meachem on a whim.

That will be my adendum to Stepn's report to you. Draft a suspended or injured WR, it is always good.

People think that a player who misses 3 games is someone to be avoided when it is actually the opposite. See Steve Smith of Carolina in 09' or Marshall last year both of whom I drafted.

3 games is nothing in the whole scope of the season. In fact, many important RBs or WRs miss 2-3 games regardless. Don't shy away from them and cover yourself by taking the guy replacing them if the QB is good enough to get it to them.

Vincent Jackson is a prime example for this year. Don't drop their value much, if at all because of this.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on July 20, 2010 9:54PM CST
I go first.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on July 20, 2010 9:58PM CST
Yeah... forget suspensions.

I actually don't even look at bye weeks. Even if I have to forfeit a game because I can't field a team.... I don't care if my team is loaded.

I took Steve Smith that year.

And Trash is right. Those combos are dynamite. I had Jeff Garcia and TO one year. Set the record for points in my big money league. The record held till this guy had Moss and Brady during the record setting season.

Posted by: PT Husker on July 20, 2010 9:59PM CST
Always up for learning something. Sounds like the stat nerds have an advantage. that or dumb luck.

I am good at #2.

Nite all.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on July 20, 2010 10:00PM CST
Just kidding abut me going first. ESPN automatically chooses a little while before the draft.

5 RBs? That's plain silly. Never heard of that. You better vote to change that in your yahoo leagues. 3 is necessary, 4 is max. Sheesh.

Most are interchangeable anyway based on matchups unless you have the RBs on the few non-committee approach teams.

Posted by: Trashman on July 20, 2010 10:05PM CST
At one time I paid attention to bye weeks. But they matter very little. Just draft the best player.

Now I only do for Ks and TE's if there's a drop/add charge for the league. We eliminated this a few years ago and just increased the league fee.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on July 20, 2010 10:06PM CST
What if you want to run a wishbone?

Posted by: drivebyposter on July 20, 2010 10:07PM CST
Trash,

You are so into fantasy. Thongball?

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on July 20, 2010 10:08PM CST
I've never played with a charge by transaction. Usually in the leagues I play in... people are add/drop'n every week.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on July 20, 2010 10:12PM CST
drive by))) What the hell is a "t"?

Did someone say Hagg?

Let 'em Sag if ya got 'em

Posted by: SuperHusker17 on July 20, 2010 10:25PM CST
Well here you guys are talking shop and I'm not around. Damn you wiley ol' guys. I'm by no means amazing at it but I'll hold my own. The cookie cutter league on ESPN allows:

1 QB

2 RB

1 RB/WR (so you could technically have 3 RB's playing in a week or 3 WR's)

2 WR

1 TE

1 D/ST

K

That's your starting roster and then you have 7 on your bench that you can have whatever on. If that doesn't work for people we could do a custom league.

Posted by: Trashman on July 20, 2010 10:28PM CST
Super

So are you charged a fee for "custom" leagues?

Posted by: SuperHusker17 on July 20, 2010 10:34PM CST
Nope, its free even if its a custom league

Posted by: SuperHusker17 on July 20, 2010 10:38PM CST

Posted by: SuperHusker17 on July 20, 2010 10:42PM CST
I don't have it set up yet. Don't mean to confuse people, it's info about the different types of leagues.

Posted by: Trashman on July 20, 2010 10:43PM CST
Super

I thought that was the case. My friend runs the ESPN League for the other one I participate in.

I will be setting my league up with:

2 QBs, 3 RBs, 4 WRs (5 if I have to but CBS let us use 4), 2 TEs, 2 Ks, 2 DEF.

All will be required positions to hold in a 12 team league. So, for my league, no keeping 1 Kicker and 4 RBs or 3 DEF and 4 WRs.

But my other league, nearly anything goes. Less skill involved, but fun either way.

Posted by: BleedingRed on July 20, 2010 10:44PM CST
Is this college or pro? ...I'm too tired to read every post. Sorry.

Posted by: Trashman on July 20, 2010 10:52PM CST
Super

The thing with fantasy, or any activity, people are always looking to take it to another difficulty/fun level.

So along came "keeper drafts" then "dynasty teams" now "auction drafts"....

I'm doing keeper in one, and auction would be my choice if I could get a group to do it. At least everyone gets a fair chance at their player if they want to bid for it.

But drafting a team, just filling your starting positions, then no limits to whatever direction just bores me. You end up with dudes taking 6 RB's and 4 QB's hoping for trade bait of which never happens because everyone's benches are too big anyway. Just not fun in my book.

But I'll do whatever, especially for free.

Posted by: Trashman on July 20, 2010 10:55PM CST
Bleeding

College? Kinda tough, but I did try it on ESPN. pretty difficult.

Pro is the way to go.

Posted by: BleedingRed on July 20, 2010 10:58PM CST
Yes Trashman,

There is a lot more parity in all aspects of an organization in the NFL...barring a few franchises that is.

College would be a job just trying to figure out who to take based on way too many factors.

Obviously we are in the latter stages of withdrawal (sp?) from a lack of football.

You never know what you are going to find on this site from day to day. :)

The most shocking part of this post, is that Sip was able to turn on Commercials Nightly and catch actual football conversation and not a montage of old clips or filler babble.

Sip - The big question is this: Is your drive home long enough that you were able to catch the whole interview (and the requisite 10 minutes of commercials) or did you have to sit in the garage and finish it before going in the house?

Posted by: N_trepid on July 21, 2010 4:20PM CST
Hagg is a stud, and a great recruit from HWSNBN.

Look how the talent flourishes under Bo and Carl Pelini! This guy is smart, fast, strong, adaptable. Great player, and great mentor for the talent behind him. Can't wait to get these guys in action!
