Heisman finalists named today
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on December 7, 2009 at 12:37PM CST
The Heisman finalists are expected to be announced during the 5 p.m. SportsCenter broadcast today.

I know Suh has at least two first-place votes.

Sipple's ballot is below. Here's mine: 1) Suh 2) Ingram 3) Gerhart.

McKeever and Rosenthal also have ballots, but I'm unclear which direction they went.

Go BIG SUH, you deserve the invite and the trophy!

Posted by: Crazy Jack on December 7, 2009 12:50PM CST
Suh is the best player in the nation and that is what the award is about. SUH all the way.

Posted by: HuskerBruin on December 7, 2009 12:55PM CST
On the Schick and Nick show on 1620 they have been tracking Heisman straw balloting of actual voters (think political exit polls). According to their last update (about 5 minutes ago), Suh is currently leading the voting, with Gerhart, Ingram, McCoy following. Very interesting indeed.

Posted by: Bumarooskie on December 7, 2009 1:04PM CST
I think N. Suh was ahead on the ESPN ballot before they took it down. That would be another vote for the best player in the country...no bias here.

Posted by: broganreynik on December 7, 2009 1:07PM CST
How long has it been since there's been a Heisman race so wide open? Granted there's been an upset here and there, but for the most part, the last 15 years there has always been a consensus favorite.

Posted by: 4BigRed on December 7, 2009 1:13PM CST
Sports Illustrated has Suh #1:

Yes he is the top of that list buma, by about 15,000.

Just back from Texas, and I believe that SUH is by far the best player in the country, but I also thought we won the game

Some pundits have the "eventually, we'll have a woman president -- when the time is right" attitude. I've heard the same arguments for Suh's chances. It goes something like, "Suh's a great player, and at some future point, a non-skilled player will win the award." With the wide-open race and Suh's dominance, isn't this year just right for a DL to justly earn the award? Can I get an "Amen"?

Posted by: Big Wave Dave on December 7, 2009 1:24PM CST
AMEN!

Posted by: 4BigRed on December 7, 2009 1:25PM CST
Amen and Hallelujah, brother!!!!

Exile,
I checked out that link. Thanks. They call it the Stiff-arm Award, because they were threatened with a lawsuit by the H-------- folks for using the "H" word.

Everyone thinks of skill players using the stiff arm. It made me think of Suh's stiffarm that began his stampede of CHawkins last year against sCUm. So, with his interceptions, etc., he has a history of using a stiff-arm in ways that DLs usually don't. Does this qualify him as a skill player? Plus some snaps at FB?

Posted by: Bryan on December 7, 2009 1:29PM CST
Thanks, fellers!

Posted by: Bumarooskie on December 7, 2009 1:31PM CST
I was thinking about Toniu Funoti. For anyone scratching their head, he was an offensive lineman for the Huskers in the late 90s.

There are a few parallels with Big Suh. Funoti had a great junior year and was being touted for lots of awards if he came back for his senior year and continued to impress. Instead he went pro after his Junior year and got swallowed up in a horrible Detroit Lions organization, pretty much never to be heard from again.

My point is that Big Suh did the right thing to come back for his Senior year. He'll easily make up the money he would've earned this year. The hardware he's going to collect alone will ring up the $$$$ in negotiations. I just hope he goes to a decent team with coaches who will help him develop further.

Thanks again, Mr. Suh, for coming back!

Posted by: Huskerzone on December 7, 2009 1:40PM CST
Suh already won the Nissan Heisman vote. Great comeback fellowfans.

Posted by: Bumarooskie on December 7, 2009 1:41PM CST
Funoti was a steam roller. He played, as a freshman, in the last Nebraska - Arizona Holiday bowl as the long snapper on punts. He outran the coverage down to the kick-returner.

Posted by: 4BigRed on December 7, 2009 1:43PM CST
Have never, EVER, seen a d-lineman throw a quarterback, not to the ground, but through the AIR, like he did with McCoy. Looked like a kid throwing a temper tantrum and chucking his GI Joe doll across the room!

Posted by: HuskerzRock on December 7, 2009 1:44PM CST
We NEED another Funoti to show these boys on the OL how to play...

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on December 7, 2009 1:46PM CST
One thing I don't understand is that just about everyone that has a vote for the heisman says, "Suh is def. the most dominant player in college football right now and he alone has the skills to influence a game, BUT he wont win it b/c he's a DT."

Ok, if everyone is saying that then y doesn't everyone vote for him??? If they think he is the best player then freaking vote for him! Then a DT will WIN the heisman.

And two, i would love to see on the ballot where it says you have to vote for a "skill" position player...

Posted by: Bumarooskie on December 7, 2009 1:47PM CST
Suh looked like he was throwing seed bags into the back of a pick-up when he was manhandling McCoy -- the WINNNINGEST QB in history.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on December 7, 2009 1:47PM CST
I think we just need another Steihnkuler on the OL... I think Dean has some elgibility left doesn't he??

how many can they bring to New York? There a limit?

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on December 7, 2009 1:49PM CST
Or maybe another Rimmington... lol the guys got an award named after him...

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on December 7, 2009 1:52PM CST
Theoneandonly:

I think they can only take a max of 5... but usually if someone doesn't have alot of first place votes they don't take them... hence y last year it was only Tebow, Bradford, and McCoy that was in NY even though Harrel was up for the heisman too.

IMO if you get a vote... just a vote you should be invited b/c its just an honor to even be nominated for the award.

Posted by: 4BigRed on December 7, 2009 1:52PM CST
If you thought this year was fun, Crick will be the new "beast" next year, Baby Stein steps into a starting role, as does Cameron Meredith, with Jason Ankrah as the swing end and Thaddeus Randle as the swing tackle. Hard to believe, but as even the coaches have said, the d-line will be better next year!

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on December 7, 2009 1:52PM CST
t1aO,
The Downtown Athletic Club can invite as many or as few as they like. Like the Fed, they are an unelected, unaudited body with no rules and they answer to no one.

Posted by: Bumarooskie on December 7, 2009 1:54PM CST
During the Big XII Championship game, my spouse kept saying "Why don't they just let the Defense play on Offense?" You know, maybe that wasn't such a far-fetched idea. :)

One of the competitor sports writers said that they could've run nothing but Quarterback sneaks and achieved the 1.9 yards per play that they ended up with.

But I digress....this is about Mr. Suh for Heisman. Go Big SUH!

It seems to me that they invite the top three vote getters. There was a stink last year about Crabtree not getting an invite and the story, as I remember, was it's a budget thing and they only invite the top three.

Posted by: HuskerzFL on December 7, 2009 1:57PM CST
Go Suh!!!!

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on December 7, 2009 1:57PM CST
There are some traditions with how the D.A.C. puts on the Heisman show, but THERE ARE NO RULES.

It's like the ExiledInVT.com blogger Highsmann (no trademark infringement there). I can invite as many as I want to my little party, and I can give it to whomever I want. You all can whine and complain about how I do it, but I don't have to follow any rules.

Posted by: Sandhill on December 7, 2009 1:59PM CST
Has Suh really won the Nissan Heisman poll? I keep checking back on it and even though they state the poll is inactive, Ingram has been getting about 2500 vote added daily to Suh's 1000 votes. Suh has dropped from 19% to 18% and Ingram has gone from 15% to 16% since the poll became inactive. Looks like Nissan wants Ingram to win their vote.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on December 7, 2009 1:59PM CST
O ok... i thought they were limited to 5... thanks for clearing that up guys.

I liked it the old way when no one knew who was up for the heisman untill the winner was announced.

IMO that took away the "popularity" contest it has now become.

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on December 7, 2009 2:00PM CST
For those of you on the edges of your seats, I will be announcing the finalists for the ExiledInVT.com Blogger Highsmann tomorrow. Just a hint of what's to come: 2 of the finalists were NOT rated as 5* prospects by ExiledInVT.com coming into the season...

Posted by: Bullet on December 7, 2009 2:00PM CST
Exiled, I love it.

Maybe even like the Nobel committee.

Best of luck to Suh, what an animal.

SUH GATHERING STEAM!!!!

I see there's two votes from our guys for Suh, but more will be coming. On Mike & Mike this morning Herbstreit said it was not finalized and looking at it as he spoke. But he had : Ingram, Suh, Gerhart unofficially.

Mark Schlaybach on Jim Rome said he's embarassed Suh didn't even make his top 5 coming into this week. Said he was flooded with emails from Nebraska fans and really saw why this weekend. His vote was Suh first.

He may just pull this off.....

They're trying to jyp us just like the refs did in the Big 12 Championship game...

Jeez people really try to suppress Nebraska don't they... they must really hate that we can be so good without cheating.

Just like how the Heisman has gone traditionally gone to the glory boys--the QBs, the RBs, the WRs--the ExiledInVT.com Blogger Highsmann has traditionally gone to the ranters, ravers, and red kool-aid drinkers...but this year could be different.

Could this be the year an ALL CAPS POSTER or a -gasp- troll wins the Blogger Highsmann?

Stay tuned, and subscribe to my website (I need, like $500 to even get the site up and running, so please send me some money...like, I don't know, $99.95 for a lifetime platinum subscription) ExiledInVT.Com.

Trash, are you asking about the Heisman or the Blogger Highsmann?

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on December 7, 2009 2:06PM CST
Well honestly if we had won the game on saturday Suh would have a great chance at winning... but IMO the Bama running back won it saturday.

120+ total yrds and like 3 TDs (i think) against FU... pretty sure he won it.

HSB,

While I don't disagree that Ingram played well, he wasn't even the best player that day. McElroy won that game for 'Bama. Suh was the MVP of that game.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on December 7, 2009 2:11PM CST
Well since Exiled is campaigning for money I will try too.

Anyone wanna send me enough money for tickets to the holiday bowl, gas to SD and back, and for a hotel room?

Trash--here's how the winnowing process works for the ExiledInVT.com Blogger Highsmann:

I take all the records and throw them out the window (just like a rivalry game in college fb).

Then, I take the stats on paper...and throw them away. The blogs aren't played on paper, they're played on the field, er, internets!

Finally, I consult with no one and use no explicit objective criteria. Remember, I'm just trying to stir up as much business as possible in the form of normal, gold, platinum, diamond, and beryllium level subscriptions to my blogger ranking service, ExiledInVT.Com.

I announce the finalists tomorrow. How many will there be? Who knows? I haven't even made up the rules in my head for how many I'll announce yet.

The award will be announced Dec. 14 after much debate in my head.

People who want to win better put up a good showing in the Blogger Conference Championships, i.e., today's blogs.

Posted by: Trashman on December 7, 2009 2:14PM CST
HSB
Yeah, but I don't get it. I guess it has to be the ol' best player on a championship team....but as a couple have said, the freshman back behind him (Richardson I believe?) may even be better.

Ingram's added another 322 yds and 3 TDs receiving. That's nearly 1900 total yards and 18 TDs. To me, that's kind of run-of-the-mill type numbers that are put yearly by RBs. Gerhart has more rushing yards, total yards and 8 more TDs. If anything, look at him over Ingram.

It's a perfect year for a DL to win this award.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on December 7, 2009 2:16PM CST
HuskerinCO:

You and I know that, but how many of the other voters actually watched that game? I'd say only about 20% of the voters probably watched the game... the rest will look at the stats.

In todays game the heisman goes to the player who is on one of the best teams in the country, plays decently, puts up alot of stats, and has a great PR person.

Suh has someof those but a 9-4 record is not enough to win it for him, and the only big name PR person pushing for Suh has been Kipper Jr. on ESPN and most people wont listen to him b/c "he's an NFL analyst and doesn't know college football"

I would argue the 20% viewership point as well. All 3 of the most talked about guys were playing last weekend on nationally televised games. I had heard that only 20% of the votes were likely to be cast before these games. Most were looking for a standout performance to solidify their vote. I think Soh popped out a lot to people and went from underdog invitee, to at worst runner-up.

Sounds crazy I know.

Suh getting serious love on Rome. I think it was Schlaybach that said he considered Ingram, but wasn't even sure that Ingram was the best player on his team. Leave it up to Herbstreit to not put Suh on top . . . he's got a little anti-N in him.

Posted by: RobotMonster on December 7, 2009 2:36PM CST
colt versus suh for Heisman. who won the head to head? i think it's pretty obvious watching Colt flying threw the air Saturday night that Suh crushed Colts Heisman hopes and should be on the top of anyones ballots.

So Nutts agent says he is taking the KU Job, Tommy tubbervilles daughter has contacted KU admissions, Perkins is in New York interviewing Gill this afternoon....

Someone is going to be disappointed!

Posted by: HuskerzFL on December 7, 2009 2:47PM CST
Maybe Nutt will take the KU job and Turner will take the Ole Miss job.

Posted by: Wrestler on December 7, 2009 2:51PM CST
It would be nice to see the voting go for SUH!
And break the tradition of always choosing a QB or RB this year? Probably won't happen but should? I hope he is there in NYC at least?

Suh was the leader of the band of a truly outstanding Defensive unit this year! But O unit well the tale of two stories? Coach Bo and AD TO's support I am sure will be more involved to some degree for the seasons to come in addressing that situation? GBR! Zhou Da Hong!

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on December 7, 2009 2:51PM CST
I think KU should have gone after Gill...

Gill would get alot of those Nebraska players to go there b/c they'll know who he is... and he's from FW and has good connections in Texas...

I think Gill would have been a better choice for KU than Nutt.

Posted by: Tennessee-Husker87 on December 7, 2009 2:53PM CST
From 104.5 The Zone in Nashville, TN this morning I heard from Mark Howard that he voted Suh 2nd on his ballot.

It really sounds like it is going to be a close race between Ingram, Gerhart & Suh.

I knew Dirk Chatelain back in college. My roommate grew up with him in Columbus. He is a fun guy to have a few beers with and a great guy to talk to about sports. Puts everything in great context.

GO BIG ?

Posted by: Robka on December 7, 2009 3:01PM CST
Suh4 H - my problem with that is that our Offense carried our D last year. Our conference rating had to do with Chase Daniels, Gram Harrell, Todd Reising, Sam Bradford, etc. You should look how our offense did nationally last year, because the Big 12 was loaded with great O and poor D.

GO BIG O-LINE PLAY!!!

Posted by: HuskerzRock on December 7, 2009 3:02PM CST
Suh is still ahead on www.stiffarmtrophy.com but he is now projected to be third instead of first. Gerhart predicted to win it followed by Ingram and Suh. .02% difference between Suh and Ingram. In the projections anyway...

I have no problem with Gerhart winning it over Suh. Just not Ingram. He isn't even the most talented RB on that team.

Posted by: Miller on December 7, 2009 3:13PM CST
I would love to see Suh get the Heisman but as long as McCoy doesn't I can live with that. Bo has to make tough decisions in regards to the offense, may it be coaching changes or players sitting on the bench. He has to hand his defense over to his brother and be more involved with the offense and get them on their feet so the team can be balanced out. Neither the offense or the defense should be carrying one or the other through a season. If Bo gets a handle on the offense like he has on the defense we will see an NC in the next couple of years. He just needs to make the offense toughen up and run through that brick wall for him, and keep them fired up. There has to be a way to get this offense too play. Kinnie is one of my favorites on offense, he is big and is tough. If we could grab more of him in the receiving area things could turn. I like Burkhead also, I think he is tough and strong for a true freshman.

Huskersincebirth2, you did not offend me. I am just plain tired of the whole thing. It's been said so many times already.

Believe it....the greatest defensive player we will ever see.

Posted by: huskers4_eva on December 7, 2009 3:28PM CST
Speacking of Suh, man i went to suh93 website and watched his highlights of the Texas game. I was amazed when watching the game, I'm amazed after the game. Suh was a man among boys out there that game.

Hopefully Suh gets the trip to NYC.
There is no other player in the country that receives more attention each week against teams than Suh does. I guarantee that.

SUH for Heisman baby.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on December 7, 2009 3:31PM CST
Honeslty... SUH maybe the best DL to ever play the game.

I think we will see that come his career in the NFL.

I bet he gets Defensive MVP next year.

Here is an interesting story by ESPN about the coaches voting.

http://espn.go.com/blog/big12/post/_/id/8052/usa-today-poll-provides-interesting-look-at-big-12-teams

Some coaches are idiots!

Posted by: huskers4_eva on December 7, 2009 3:33PM CST
Huskersince, we haven't agreed on a lot of things, but i'll agree with you on Suh.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on December 7, 2009 3:38PM CST
Where's Mack Browns vote?

Posted by: wildlovehog on December 7, 2009 3:40PM CST
Stupid ESPN, Yeah, where is Mack Browns vote!

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on December 7, 2009 3:41PM CST
Ugh... Coach Dodge seriously? Well Im gunna have to go up to the athletic department tomorrow at Fouts Field and give him a piece of my mind.

Posted by: wildlovehog on December 7, 2009 3:42PM CST
It wasn't surprising to see that Rick Neuheisel didn't rank Nebraska.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on December 7, 2009 3:42PM CST
Todd Dodge didn't vote for Nebraska at all...

Posted by: Huskerzone on December 7, 2009 3:47PM CST
Rickey Williams blew soooooo many brain cells smoking dope, he could probably only remember the one name.

Posted by: Guido on December 7, 2009 3:58PM CST
http://stiffarmtrophy.com/ is up to 103 ballots that have been published and Suh has been named on 61 of 103 ballots with 36 1st place votes so far. They are projecting him to be 3rd because of the West Coast ballots not in yet (and Gerhart has nobody to split them with out there).

Posted by: throw46 on December 7, 2009 4:07PM CST
Do yo guys think that if Suh blocked the final TU field goal kick that Suh would be a shoe in for the Heisman?

Posted by: Outside The Box on December 7, 2009 4:08PM CST
Guido - good link. And for the record, whomever gave a 3rd place vote to Denario Alexander should have their vote taken away.

Posted by: RedDog77 on December 7, 2009 4:09PM CST
Did anyone see Outside the Lines on ESPN today? If so can you tell me what the topic was?

Posted by: RedDog77 on December 7, 2009 4:15PM CST
I had the TV on caption and I thought I read sommething about big 12 officials and vendettas. Please someone set me straight.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on December 7, 2009 4:18PM CST
If Suh had blocked the Kick, yes... he would have won the heisman no doubt.

Posted by: Guido on December 7, 2009 4:20PM CST
The actual votes they have logged on stiffarm.com are here:

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on December 7, 2009 4:24PM CST
Suh's gotten alot of 1st place votes...

Posted by: MercilessOne on December 7, 2009 4:25PM CST
RedDog77, prolly that NBA ref, Donaghy...

Posted by: HuskerzRock on December 7, 2009 4:25PM CST
Bradford voted only for mccoy as #1 as well...

Posted by: HuskerzRock on December 7, 2009 4:27PM CST
I'd like to see who Tebow votes for...

Posted by: RedDog77 on December 7, 2009 4:31PM CST
ChrisHa3,I think you're probably right. Thanks. GBR

Posted by: Low Country Husker on December 7, 2009 4:35PM CST
Question....do the former winners only get a #1 vote or can they give their top 3.....several only voted for their #1?

Posted by: HuskerzRock on December 7, 2009 4:38PM CST
Good question LCH, that would explain it...

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on December 7, 2009 4:41PM CST
Former winners in the ExiledInVT.com Blogger Highsmann get 12 votes apiece.
I print out those votes and then set them on fire and make the selection myself.
Stay tuned tomorrow morning for the finalists.

Posted by: HuskerzFL on December 7, 2009 4:41PM CST
of course Bradford voted for his boyfriend.

Posted by: PlyNeb on December 7, 2009 4:46PM CST
I thought Colt was Chase Daniel's boyfriend.

Posted by: PT Husker on December 7, 2009 4:47PM CST
entering the Exiled blooger sweepstakes with a family friendly Avatar. won't win but it is the season.

Posted by: SouthBendHusker on December 7, 2009 4:51PM CST
Suh is making a historic showing. At the very least, he's breaking heisman stereotypes.

Posted by: Huskerzone on December 7, 2009 4:51PM CST
Could it be possible that some of the voters picked others not listed, that way they may only show a #1 or #1 and #3 pick, etc?

Posted by: PT Husker on December 7, 2009 4:52PM CST
New Web site. FireWatson.com. S for H Chariman treasurer and chief Preacher.

(Just Kidden S for H. Just kidden)

TO and Bo should ask (grovel) Turner to come back as OC. You won't know unless you ask.

With Gill as OC, we would've won the Big 12 THIS year, as may have won ALL THE MARBLES. If you don't think knowing this isn't getting under Bo's craw right now, you're wrong. We have the players...

Posted by: Tadow on December 7, 2009 4:56PM CST
When there is only a single name listed, I bet that is because the voter only said who they voted #1, and left out their other two.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on December 7, 2009 4:57PM CST
Bo has said all year long that Wats is a very good Coach. He knows the challenges ahead of him. IMO the huskers are going to change things up after the season.....

Posted by: Solid Husker on December 7, 2009 4:58PM CST
If Suh wins it, I hope they don't have a recount at the "last second."

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on December 7, 2009 5:02PM CST
They're about to announce the "finalists" on SportsCenter...

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on December 7, 2009 5:03PM CST
And the finalists are:

(NYC invitees)

Gerhart
Ingram
McCoy
SUH
Tebow

Posted by: TheNUorder on December 7, 2009 5:04PM CST
Sweet Suh!!!!

Posted by: Miller on December 7, 2009 5:04PM CST
Suh gets the invite!

Posted by: HuskerzFL on December 7, 2009 5:05PM CST
Suh's going!

Posted by: KeithHe on December 7, 2009 5:05PM CST
SUH going to NY!!!!

Posted by: Skull&Bones on December 7, 2009 5:05PM CST
Just because Bo says Wats is a good coach doesn't mean he thinks wats is the right coach for NU. And even if Bo hated Wats he's not going to say it during the season.

Posted by: redcornman on December 7, 2009 5:06PM CST

Posted by: huskers4_eva on December 7, 2009 5:12PM CST

Hey, did you hear. Suh is going NYC. New York New York Baby!!! haha j/k everybody knows.

GO BIG SUUUUUUUUUUUUUH

Posted by: Miller on December 7, 2009 5:22PM CST
SFH, you are right about going out on a high note, but this teams D just set the pace for years to come, they believe in the sceme and the coaches, now we just got to get the other side moving. NC in two years, but int he top 15 at the start of next season, we are being noticed thanks to our new HC.

Posted by: huskerdog/colo. on December 7, 2009 7:55PM CST
AWESOME NEWS! HE'S INVITED & I NOW THINK HE MAY WIN! Back on earth, probably not. Another Husker disappointment & another ROB JOB (zebra's)! Where in the "H" were throws to the tight ends!? One of the strenghts of an anemic offense! BUT, txASS, with a great offense, only scored 13! Obviously, they have a great "D" too (TX M & M game excluded) & DONU game vs TX Techies excluded! Will there be any motivation for AZ in Holiday Bowl? At least "THE DOG" was hoping for USC - aka University of Spoiled Children!

Posted by: micropterus_salmoides on December 7, 2009 8:54PM CST
In my mind I see McCoy and Suh at the award ceremony, Suh walks up to McCoy reaches out to shake his hand, and McCoy wets his pants and retreats to the corner sucking his thumb.

I hate Texas

Posted by: taco on December 7, 2009 11:17PM CST
i think watts and some of the staff have contracts....they also got some big pay raises. so where is all the money going to come from to pay these guys off and hire new coaches. if some recruits dont want to come here because of the poor offense.. (as said in other posts) who do you think is going to want to take the OC job. have a little faith in Bo, TO, and the rest of the staff. these guys really do know what they are doing. now enjoy where we are at this point in the season and relax. it's going to be fun to see big Suh win his awards and play on sundays. GO BIG WIN OUR BOWL GAME
