Hawkins announcement Thursday
Posted by: Steve Sipple on November 25, 2009 at 6:24PM CST

This just in from The Boulder (Colo.) Daily Camera:

LAHAINA, Hawaii -- Mike Bohn will leave here tonight having already decided the fate of football coach Dan Hawkins at Colorado.

CU's athletic director would not reveal his decision during an interview with the Camera following the men's basketball team's 73-58 victory over Chaminade in the EA Sports Maui Invitational at the Lahaina Civic Center.

Bohn said an official announcement about the football coaching situation will come Thursday.

"We'll head back on the red eye and will spend some time with coach Hawkins (Thursday)," Bohn said.

Hawkins has been under fire from fans and critics throughout a disappointing 3-8 season. With one game remaining -- Friday's season finale against Nebraska at Folsom Field -- in his fourth season at CU, Hawkins has a 16-32 record.

The Camera has confirmed that Hawkins did sit down face-to-face with CU chancellor Phil DiStefano this week and came away from the meeting with the understanding that he would be given a chance to coach the Buffs for a fifth season. A source also said Hawkins has spoken with CU president Bruce Benson.

CU spokesman Bronson Hilliard said today that no decision has been made.

If CU decided to fire Hawkins it would cost the school over $3 million.

I think he stays another year. He completes the contract and they don't have to do a buyout. Saves them some money. I don't think they would annouce a firing one day before the game.

Posted by: drivebyposter on November 25, 2009 6:35PM CST
the contract goes through 2012

sheesh,

and actually if they fired him after the game it would cost the school 2.2 million

sheesh

I was hoping they would burn the turkey

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 6:37PM CST
The Scott Van Pelt Show said today that Hawkins was informed he would be back.

Posted by: Flopper on November 25, 2009 6:37PM CST
I think Weis, Hawkins, Miles, Mangino all should keep their jobs. You have to start from scratch with a new coaching staff. I thought ISU should have kept McCarney. He had a couple of down years, but I don't think they would have been down for as long as they have if they would have kept him. Changing staffs to often is hard on a program, even in the NFL.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on November 25, 2009 6:44PM CST
I think Weis is gone. The AD annouced that he canceled Weis's plan to recruit on the West Coast after the Stanford game. So I think he will be let go.

Posted by: drivebyposter on November 25, 2009 7:07PM CST
steph

Hawk made some kind of lame statement that he had been retained after the chancellor meeting

the chancellors office denied that a decision had been made.

Tomorrow is turkey day, I can hardly wait

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 7:10PM CST
No doubt Weiss is gone. Thats just not good enough at Notre Dame.

However... 3-8 is still plenty good for CU. So Hawkins will stay.

Posted by: HuskerzFL on November 25, 2009 7:11PM CST
I hope Hawk does stay.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 7:15PM CST
drive by))) Are you calling Dan Hawkins a liar?

Posted by: drivebyposter on November 25, 2009 7:16PM CST
cali had 4 hawk had 4

the right decision needs to be made go bye bye birdie.

Whats the name of that pregnant chested girl?

Posted by: drivebyposter on November 25, 2009 7:22PM CST
steph,

perhaps I am. But at a minimum the bald one bon pelt will have to issue another apology for not checking on things.

His commercial is perfect.."I'm embarresssssed.

And by the way, it appears that mr. hawkins has told a few "fibs" along the way.

I just figure that 16 and 32 means it would take him 4 years at 8 and 4 to get to 500.

Not gonna happen with him in that position.

Posted by: drivebyposter on November 25, 2009 7:29PM CST
steph here is the latest

Sources have confirmed that University of Colorado Athletic Director Mike Bohn has heard enough and is not happy with Head Coach Dan Hawkins releases agreement information to the media. We have been told Bohn will make an "an official announcement about the football coaching situation" Thursday after meeting with Hawkins tomorrow. Our source confirmed that Bohn has moved the Monday meeting to tomorrow to put an end to this.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 7:32PM CST
But... Scott Van Pelt... said he was coming back.

SVP knows more than the CU AD.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on November 25, 2009 7:34PM CST
dbp - an end to what, the speculation, or that he is going to end Hawkins tenure? I just can't see them letting him go on the eve of their last game. Could be wrong though.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 7:38PM CST
drive by))) Don't you live in Colorado? It's pretty nice up there isn't it?

I might come on up there and stay with you for about 7 or 8 months. That cool?

Posted by: drivebyposter on November 25, 2009 7:39PM CST
IH,

the whole dang thing is a mess and has been for just about 2 years.

sheesh And I like them thar buffs.

the rumor is he has not even been around practice much this week. And he made some bonehead statement that Kasa, a 5 star freshman who got hurt and then sick, was gonna play friday.

And Kasa said no way and that he hadn't even been practicing and was working on a medical redshirt.

Boulder is such a silly place

Posted by: drivebyposter on November 25, 2009 7:41PM CST
raz,

i can get you a good rate in blackhawk

Posted by: Islander/Husker on November 25, 2009 7:45PM CST
Thanks dbp. Yeah I know it has been messy there for sure. How do you think it will end up?

Posted by: drivebyposter on November 25, 2009 7:49PM CST
A couple of days ago, I was sure he was gone.

And that all changed today based on these press leaks by hawkins and some stuff in the paper.

But it truely is indicative of the state of buff football. It is a real shame actually, a real shame.

It is worse than the cali era as at least he won some games. This guy appears clueless

The buffs don't deserve him any more than the corn deserved cali

sheesh, more beer

Posted by: Islander/Husker on November 25, 2009 7:50PM CST
What's interesting to me is that over in Kansas, where Mangino is getting some heat, many of his current players are backing him up and wanting him to stay. Down in Buff land many players are non-committal. Plus McCartney gave them a pep talk Sunday. He thinks the players will be fired up. But you wonder. Maybe they will be asking McCartney to come back like Snyder at K-State, to right the ship.

Happy Turkey Eve guys.
Can't tell you how nice it is to have Thanksgiving in the states.
I has been a few years since I was overseas but I do appreicate being able to be at home.

Posted by: PT Husker on November 25, 2009 7:58PM CST
I agree with someone above. He is staying. If not there would be no announcement the day before a game. hate to see what is going on happen to any program.

Posted by: PT Husker on November 25, 2009 7:59PM CST
Another interesting rumor, Miles to Notre Dame.

Posted by: TX_Husker on November 25, 2009 8:06PM CST
Hawkins will be cut, before or after the game is redundant.

The bigger question is if Watson will persue CU's interest in him for head coach.

Posted by: PT Husker on November 25, 2009 8:07PM CST
Happy thanksgiving all. Do you ralize that if the Pilgrems would have chosen Donkey instead of turkey we would all get a piece of A** tomorrow,

Posted by: Low Country Husker on November 25, 2009 8:09PM CST
DBP

Can you really say it would be better without Hawkins? I mean there is a lot of talent there it's just very young......you of all people know that he walked into a complete mess.

Oh PT,
Thats so wrong
You never know there might be some eating arse tomorrow.

The Buffs have such a pathetic group of rainy day alums and boosters, I doubt they could raise anywhere close to the 3 million it would take to buy Hawkins out. If he stays, it means they can't come up with the cash. I like Hawkins and don't wish him any harm. You can tell this has been a really rough year for him, he looks like he has lost a lot of weight. He kind of offsets our portly pal down south.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on November 25, 2009 8:48PM CST
Nish

I lean towards a spicy taste but if you don't back off the chili and Cayenne it won't change the flavor. If you can find a hard wood like Pecan it is amazing!

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 8:50PM CST
You mean... you guys don't have donkey arse for Thanksgiving dinner?

Posted by: NishBigRed on November 25, 2009 8:51PM CST
where can you find Pecan?
I stated before I use to buy my wood at Barbquesgalorie but they went out of business.
I have looked into buying wood on line but that so expensive.
Right now all I can find is Hickory and Mesquite.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 8:51PM CST

It's only 7 months.

True story....when I was in the war I had camel for Christmas dinner......yum yum!

eww,
Had sheep brain but it wasn't for dinner of anything special

Posted by: Low Country Husker on November 25, 2009 8:56PM CST
Nish

This is a little unorthordoxed but you could probably just take the actual pecans and put them in the burn pit they will give off the same flavor as the pecan wood. Walmart sells those cast iron boxes for gas grills you could substitute the wood chips for pecans.

Posted by: NishBigRed on November 25, 2009 9:00PM CST
thats and idea,
I use a wood smoker but I could put the pecans in there

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 9:00PM CST
Camel was on the menu in Morocco. I didn't try it tho.

Arabs have been eating Camels for thousands of years.

Posted by: Mountainman@ on November 25, 2009 9:04PM CST
Any thinking Husker fan would want Hawkins to stay. Who knows who you might get instead? You want Turner Gill there? Or the DC from Texas? They probably would get one of the young bright guys from Texas with strong recruiting ties there. That would not be helpful to the Huskers at all.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 9:05PM CST
QB Ryan Mallett of Arkansas... formerly of Michigan... has an 11.6 YPA. Thats incredible.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 9:06PM CST
Everybody(except CU fans) wants Hawkins to stay. No doubt about that.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on November 25, 2009 9:08PM CST
I think they need to offer him an extension I haven't heard of any inmoral coduct by the program since he took over and that is miles from where he began!

Posted by: Mountainman@ on November 25, 2009 9:09PM CST
What about that hot DL from Portland, OR that came in for the K-State game. Any chance of getting him? Some pundits were comparing him to Suh.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on November 25, 2009 9:11PM CST
well I need to get to bed lots of cooking early tomorrow....Night all

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 9:12PM CST
While we are at it....

there is an old Bedouin joke. They tell people that a Camels nads are a delicacy... then the person eats them... and supposedly they are the nastiest thing you can put in your mouth. Which isn't all that surprising.

I saw some guy tricked into eating them. The guy was none too happy. But those Bedouin desert rats thought it was hilarious though.

They tried to get me to eat them... I told them... The StepRaZor don't eat nads. Period.

Posted by: BrianSm on November 25, 2009 9:12PM CST
Hawkins is a good offensive guy. His downfall has been on the defensive side of the ball. I don't think CU has the money to buy him out and given the lack of support CU has, the job won't attract a lot of interest from top shelf coaching propects. Plus, Hawkins is not making a lot of money, again because of the lack of funds.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 9:15PM CST
Odighizuwa will visit Florida this weekend... and USC the next. Then he will decide.

He did say that Nebraska will have a hat on the table when he makes it official. So... we got that going for us.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 9:22PM CST
Nish))) The correct way to smoke is...

low and slow.

250 degrees... all day... and as was stated before... hard wood.

Posted by: NishBigRed on November 25, 2009 9:24PM CST
Step,
I understand that concept. My smoker has a water pan to keep the temp down and increase the flavor
Just hard to get good wood in Vegas since Barbquegalore went out of business
I don't smoke no Camel though
I have smoke some arse, but thats another story

Sportsnightly (1400 AM Lincoln) Had Hawkins on tonight, and apparently he's coming back

God I hope so, the trainwreck down in Boulder has just been fantastic to watch.

Nice guy or not, He said the Worst days as a Buff was better than the Best days as a Husker.

He's run that program into the ground worse than Callasatan ran ours into the ground.

We're back, and still have a dump truck full of trophies, and Hawks is back, and still looking to dig the hole deeper

HAHAHAHA looks like the worst days as a Buff are about as bad as it gets in college football PERIOD

Husker fans are very diverse. We can discuss almost anything, including football. Step has some great stories regarding midgets.

Posted by: BlackshirtBeado on November 25, 2009 9:33PM CST
Nish, I understand.

anyother week, and I would say midgets should get the majority of attention. I mean I occassionally enjoy tossing them

But I want to smoke the Buffs

Man College football is crazy this year.
I'm sure glad the Husker are finally back on track.
Boy we had it good all those years.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 9:44PM CST
Nish))) You can probably get some shipped for about $800... plus the price of the wood. lol

Posted by: BlackshirtBeado on November 25, 2009 9:45PM CST
whats crazier than the actual play of college football this year, is the overwhelming ineptitude of the AP Poll.

I bet midgets could handicap better than these current AP polltroons (Sip Excluded of course)

Posted by: NishBigRed on November 25, 2009 9:47PM CST
Step,
Thats if I go by regular mail
Honest you can buy wood online. They will waive the shipping if I buy 500 pounds. The mail man wont be happy.

Midgets for $800, plus wood???
(slaps Knee)

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWEEEEEEEE
Thas a mighty good deal
(we cookin' midgets Friday, or something?)

Posted by: Outside The Box on November 25, 2009 9:50PM CST
If Hawk comes back, it means one of three things:

1) CU and their big boosters in Boulder don't have the money to buy out Hawk.
2) The boosters have the money, but don't care enough to buy out Hawk.
3) The CU administration believes Hawk can turn it around and be successful.

I don't see an answer in the list that makes CU look good here.

Posted by: NishBigRed on November 25, 2009 9:51PM CST
midget cooking now thats just sick.
I draw the line at throwing a one midget into a pile ofo another midgets.

Step,
Didn't you use to go some place to pickup ugly midgets and fight all the men of the town?

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 9:53PM CST
One of my many ventures is... I own the only mealworm farm in Texas. Pump out about 4 million worms every 4 days.

Anyways... if I ship 400,000 worms... it runs the people I ship to about $300 bucks.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 9:55PM CST
Nish))) You know... my wife caught me with that midget girl you hooked me up with. My wife said... "I thought you were gonna quit cheating on me!" I said... "Can't you see I'm trying to cut down!"

Posted by: BlackshirtBeado on November 25, 2009 9:57PM CST
hmmmmmmmmm,

So mealworms are ok?

Midget cooking is bad?

And boosters at CU are infantile?

Have I got this right?

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 9:57PM CST
I wonder if midgets have regular people jokes?

Posted by: BlackshirtBeado on November 25, 2009 9:58PM CST
oh, and Step is cutting back with wee midget hookups?

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 10:00PM CST
Mealworms don't taste too bad. 57% protein also. Some countries munch them down. Those are the countries without a Wal Mart mind you.

And I messed that post up. 4 million worms every 8 days.... is what I meant. 2 million every 4 days.

Posted by: NishBigRed on November 25, 2009 10:01PM CST
Im afraid to ask what the mealworms are for.
Step,
What can I say you told me you just wanted to get a little. Jeez one midget set up and I have to hear about it for every.
Did you ever get your step stool back?

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 10:04PM CST
Step stool. Thats pretty funny.

Thats actually funny you brought that up. I don't use step stools for sex. I use camel saddles... and I am serious about that. I got a camel saddle one time from my aunt that went somewhere for vacation. Been using that thing for years. It's perfect.

Posted by: NishBigRed on November 25, 2009 10:06PM CST
I'm afraid to ask why your aunt had a camel saddle?

Posted by: BlackshirtBeado on November 25, 2009 10:08PM CST

Some person stated earlier in this thread of perhaps Watson coming south to figure out his offense. In the spirit of the holidays, I no longer state my official view of said coach. But, I, for one, do not want him south of Missouri or east of Texas, i.e. SEC land. Sheesh, we've got enough stinking fish in town as it is.

Posted by: NishBigRed on November 25, 2009 10:13PM CST
Holy Cow,
Busie from the top rope. Miles to ND and Wats to LSU? no?

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 10:18PM CST
I sell mealworms to Zoos, aquariums and bat and bird rehabs.

You see... it's out there.. you just have to be smart enough to find it. I knew from years ago that mealworms were easy to grow.... bu I didn't have anybody to sell them to. When I found out how much the shipping was... and that there was not another farm in Texas.... I knew I could take everything in Texas... by simply saving them the cost of shipping.

Total cost of a 4,000' building and all the bins and shelving was about 14 large. I made that back instantly. And the only overhead is gas for delivery... a bunch of workers from Honduras... 200 pounds of carrots... and 400 pounds of grain every week.

Some day... somebody else will do it. And there will be a serious bidding war. I won't be able to do it forever. But whatever... I already made more cash than I thought I could.

Posted by: Busiekcreek on November 25, 2009 10:19PM CST
If Watson comes here, I will offficially declare myself a Gump. I wish him well wherever he stays or lands. Long as it's far, far away.

Step, do you still have all those snakes?

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 10:22PM CST
I met this guy from Philly... he did the same thing I did... with potato chips.

He lives in San Antonio now. He's the only distributor of these certain types of potato chips in Texas.

He's making a killing.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on November 25, 2009 10:23PM CST
Busie, what do think of the idea of Miles jumping the ND? I don't think that will happen, but stranger things of taken place. Are the natives still restless?

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 10:25PM CST
Oh yeah. Always getting new snakes. Still have the old ones. I make some cash breeding them also. But the big cash with snakes is their venom. Per weight... it's worth more than gold. The thing is... it ain't all that easy getting it out of them.

Posted by: Busiekcreek on November 25, 2009 10:27PM CST
I don't know Islander. Rumors are rampant; even to the point of a total housecleaning of the OC, DC, and HC. The natives are not restless; they're hitting manic about now. Papers, tv, radio, blogs, somebody even put up a big sign out by the university that said. "Reckon Michigan still wants him". It is not pretty and will only hurt the program and recruiting.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 10:30PM CST
They wanna get rid of The Chief already? I thought LSU's D looked pretty good this year. Certainly better than last years.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on November 25, 2009 10:32PM CST
Busie, the Tigers OC has not exactly set the world on fire. Watson might even be an upgrade (smile).

A Hawkins thread has over 90 posts. That's an amazing stat on thanksgiving eve.

The good wife and I are going to have a very quiet day at home tomorrow. But Friday, we are having a houseful. My two daughters and their families. Plus my future son-in-law's parents. So a good dinner, Husker football, and an evening of playing pitch. Should be a great day.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 10:33PM CST
Alright guys. I'm outski.

Merry Thanksgiving to each and all! Unless you are a CU fan.

I actually like Gary Crowton ok.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 25, 2009 10:37PM CST
LSU))) No doubt about that. LSU's D has slipped since Bo left.

Hey... you guys should steal coach JP from us to be your DC. He was on the LSU staff when Bo was there. He's also our best recruiter.

Posted by: Busiekcreek on November 25, 2009 10:39PM CST
Islander, May your Friday be all that you hoped for. We are so blessed, we are alive and free thanks to those like Big Red Jay and others

Busie, you can't have Bo back, he now belongs to the Huskers.

Posted by: Doc_Husker on November 25, 2009 11:22PM CST
For the love of all things Holy everyone. I am sick and tired of reading people's comments about Watson's offense. He's forgot more about offense than any of you will ever know.

This offense was just fine in 2008 when we scored 40 a game. Enough with the instant gratification. When will people learn that the experience of Ganz, Swift, and Peterson was very valuable?

Posted by: Drinkin' Wit' Terrell Farley on November 26, 2009 12:09AM CST
Say it louder Doc_Husker, you are making too much sense for this post though

I want Watson to stay, he's a great coach and recruiter, however if he left for a head coaching job, Mike Sanford, the former UNLV coach, or even better, Dirk Koetter, the OC for the Jaguars would be a fantastic pick-up if he wants to return to the college game

happy turkey day.

Looks like the turkey is surviving in boulder today.

Sorry the corn will not survive tomorrow.

Anyway there is more than enough committed cash from alums to buy him out.

The chancellor fellow happens to be a hawk fan, and even if the weak-kneed bohn decided to get rid of him it would be over-ridden by the pinhead.

Anyway, again happy turkey day. corn will have to be at its very best to win in boulder.

I am not expecting that to happen.

raz, we have a trailer out back of our trailer where you would probably fell right at home.

Lets play some football.

PT, Which mall will you be at tomorrow?

You're not the only ones on here but it's pretty close.

DBP
Sorry it's not working out the way you hoped for....maybe he can get this team to rebound to success next year.

No No

How can you say a defense that holds every team to less than 350 yards is average?

Posted by: drivebyposter on November 26, 2009 9:15AM CST
Okay

Happy Thanksgiving all.

Morning Anybody.

DBP No malls for me thank God. Xmas light time tomorrow and Saturday. Maybe some of Sunday as well.

Hope for a good game tomorrow. If each team plays to its ability it should be fun.

Mistakes will be critical and each has a propensity for that.

Buffs could be inspired by the news about Hawkins.

Go Big Red.
