Gruden on Suh
Posted by: Steve Sipple on April 15, 2010 at 1:43PM CST

ESPN analyst Jon Gruden had an interesting take on the question of whether an NFL team should draft a defensive tackle with the first overall pick.

Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy are regarded as surefire top-five picks in next week's draft.

"You can (draft them) if you really think that guy is unique and something you really need and something that is rare," he said on an ESPN teleconference. "When you really look at it, there are some concerns whether that defensive tackle can come in and electrify your fans and your football team -- like Warren Sapp.

"I think these two guys are outstanding talents, no question. They're different kinds of players. Suh plays with his hands. He's more of a two-gap player on the line of scrimmage – reminds me a little of Richard Seymour from the Patriots. McCoy is more of a classic one-gap defensive tackle, a lot like Tommie Harris, who came out of Oklahoma a few years earlier.

"You have to take a look at what you need. Quality big people are hard to find to play on every down. If you take one of these guys, he better be an every down guy that can rush the passer and impact your football team in the fourth quarter. I don't want some guy who's only going to play 26 snaps a game. I want a guy who can play 55 or 60 snaps, potentially, a game."

Well based off his answer, looks like Suh will be #1

Crick made the watch list for the Lott Trophy btw..surprise surprise

Really?

I don't recall Suh being replaced based upon whether it was a running play or a passing play that was expected. And he seemed to be able to tackle RBs as well as QBs.

Not a big fan of Gruden or what he thinks........Suh has proven himself and every NFL team knows it.
Gruden thinks Tebow is an NFL quality QB.....he's just going to follow Wuerfful and Grossman and their wonderful careers in the NFL!

Suh will be a "game changer" or at least as much of one as you will ever see at D Tackle... All he did was completely dominate at the D1 level. His best games came against the best competition as well. He took the Texas O-line and made them his "female dogs" much like he did every other team he lined up against this last year in particular.

Bring the Pain-

Sammy B is going #1 overall anyway, so it's academic at this point.

Suh will be outstanding in the NFL, as he was at NU, this I am sure of?

And Gerald, can have an excellent pro career also, both need to have luck in their careers also, as in injury free sustained long careers?

But no player, as great as Suh, maybe Dorsey close from LSU, at his position going into the pros, from recent times, in my opinion? He will make the Huskernation proud?

Just hope his situation is different, than Barry S. (Okie Lite), and big Suh gets to play on a team good enough, to win a Super Bowl also?

Suh is the man, and should have been the Heisman winner this past season, for sure?

Suh plays every down and goes 100% all the time. He is like a black hole, sucking in anything in his path, and spitting out the debris. Remember, Bradshaw?

Addendum: Black hole is an astronomical term defined as: "According to the general theory of relativity, a black hole is a region of space from which nothing, including light, can escape."

Ray, my brain is like one big blackhole of nonsense, (maybe word brainfart, comes to mind), according to GF/KW, thus her adoption of the term knucklehead, for me? Thanks Coach! I owe you one?

I concur, Suh is awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

PSSSSSSHHHH. 60 snaps?

The D played what.... like..... 87 snaps against Oklahoma? 87 snaps that Gerald McCoy wasn't on the field... I might add.

I lived in Maryland for a while. I learned about football from the Redskins...learning how terrible one team could be. Moving back to Nebraska in the late '60s showed me how high my emotional pendulum could swing. I thought maybe Suh could be drafted first then traded to the 'Skins who need him now that Albert Haynesworth is gone....but they probably screw that up, too.

Haley, Genius, coined by Coach, for you? Knucklehead, for me? What a disparity, of labels? Goes, to our differences, I suppose?

Yes 87 snaps, Suh is the greatest, and greater than Gerald? No question?

But I will comment to you, about stat manipulation? Stats can be implied meanings, depending on the intent used?

A OU person, would say OU, wasn't on the field as much, as more effective on stopping NU's offense, in less number of plays? The counter to your pt., So stats can be debated, based on perceptions?

Truth to be told, NU and OU were mirror images, of each other last season, with NU being better of course, both as in the greatest player, in all of FB in Suh, and better as a team in victory, and playing in Big 12 Championship?

But, while OU's defense was not as stellar, as NU's, it was their defense, that kept them in games, as their offense like NU's, struggled with a rash of key injuries, to key players, and a inept OLine, kind of like NU's, but worse, with former TE's and LB'ers, eventually filling in on the Oline?

So Suh, has the endurance for sure, to play in the pros, no question? He will be outstanding, and one of the very best, at that level also?

Have fun with your mom, in Lincoln, and enjoy the game? I have to bicycle off early, and all day classes, for this basketweaving expert?

I think the Rams will be making a big mistake drafting Bradford #1 overall. I would love to see the Rams draft Suh, but that's probably not going to happen. I think Bradford is a good college qb for the system he was in. There is just something about moving from the offense he ran in college to one that is successful in the NFL. Too many qbs failed to go from a spread/run and shoot offense to the pro game. Names like Klinger/Smith/Ware to name a few.

I hope the Rams trade the pick to Pittsburgh for Ben Worthlessburger...and the Steelers pick Suh.

Bowl Championship Subdivision (or, whatever it's called) football isn't the NFL, as they say.
But Suh played unreal snaps, these last two years. Like 70, sometimes?
Production and- quality production. Impactful plays. Difference making production, at the end of games, to boot. The type that, if a few more guys on the theam were at that level, championships get won. That's not Suh?
I mean, if you're trying to win a Super Bowl...

"Silly season," before the draft.

I was watching NFL Live and Herm Edwards made another interesting comment. He said, paraphrasing, the NFL ain't like college, in NFL, these D-lineman will be held on every play. Since Suh was seemingly held on every play in college, should be a fairly easy transition for him.

I think the best part of Suh's game is his pursuit on the back side of plays. He's going to make a name for himself not with big sack numbers, but for pursuing and catching guys 3 - 10 yards downfield.

No way Exiled. As a Rams fan, I don't want Ben Rapistberger anywhere around

Sapp didn't electrify his team against the Huskers and he did plenty of bench time sucking wind.
