Gill: No cussing zone
Posted by: Steve Sipple on March 16, 2010 at 8:28AM CST

Morning briefing:

Husker fans know all about Turner Gill's strong character traits.

Jayhawk fans are learning more and more.

Great story about Gill in the Lawrence (Kan.) Journal-World newspaper.

“It probably doesn’t have to be this way,” Gill said during a recent speech in Lawrence, in response to a question about how he selected his assistant coaches, “but I decided that I was not going to hire anybody who was going to be cursing and using that type of language. We are here to develop these people as young men, so we don’t need to do that.”

It comes down to Gill wanting his coaches to communicate with players in meaningful ways.

“I want all of my coaches to be able to explain to our students how they are going to do something and why it is important for them to do it,” Gill said.

Also, KU players will be expected to donate at least two hours of time per semester on projects or causes that are designed to help others.

“Yes, I know,” Gill said as he raised his hand and waved it, “I’m here to win football games. I know if I don’t, I won’t be here very long. But I understand my purpose, and I know it goes deeper than football.”

* Guess it's news of some degree in these parts when 18 former Huskers get together to do anything. Ex-NU football greats will take part Saturday in the fourth annual "Hunt With The Huskers," a pheasant hunt in Brainard, Neb. Joel Makovicka, Matt Hoskinson, Brenden Stai, Terry Connealy, Zach Wiegert, Chad Kelsay, Chris Kelsay, Adrian Fiala, Aaron Graham, Marc Munford, Dan Pensick and Jacob Hickman are among those set to attend. To participate, call Gerry Gray (402) 917-2219.

That is great news. Turner Gill is a high-class man, and I know he's going to run the KU program in the right way.

College sports are as much about what you do on the field as what you do off the field.

Good luck with the Cussing thing. Hope he can pull it off.

the community service deal is great. I would have thought they were doing that already.

Too much time being spent covering Turner Gill, he was a great NU QB and a fine person and good coach. But he is now the enemy, sort of. All I'm saying is I have read my last story about Turner Gill until KU week. Thanks

Posted by: Mentally Red on March 16, 2010 9:19AM CST
This sounds all well and good, but that greater purpose he is working toward might just end up shortening his tenure there.

I really like Gill, but I keep thinking that Tom Osborne got it right and knew deep down that Bo was going to win more than Gill ever would.

Posted by: Bullet on March 16, 2010 9:25AM CST
I love these stories about Turner and hope he has much success...except when the Huskers play them. He is a class act and I am happy for him that he has a shot at a BCS school. A man like Turner has an opportunity here to succeed by doing things the right way, with high standards. He will do great things at Kansas.

Posted by: Wrestler on March 16, 2010 9:38AM CST
Gill is class, because he is opposed to his staff using profanity, therefore he's not as great, a winner? Crap, on those, that think that way? It's not the words, that makes the man?

OK, I get it, some don't want to hear about Turner's tenure at KU, on a NU blog?

It's off season, and he was here, so why not, maybe, some can't allow themselves to think, he's good at an opponent's school?

Mature thinking people, can give him credit, for what he is, and wish him the best, and still want to beat him, when playing against him? But win or lose, it doesn't change the character, of the man?

Be proud, that a class individual, so needed today, in college ranks, can win with character, as his mentor once did, TO?

Here's, wishing Turner and his Jayhawks, the very best, except for two Big 12 opponents, for me?

Refreshing story, about the man in my eyes, for the coaching ranks, need more of them?

GBR! Zhou Da Hong! GB12! Zhou Da Shier!

The more, I hear about the man, the more I admire him, as well! He represents, his former ties, to the Huskernation, in a very special way!

this is ******** football not the girl scouts!! are the coaches even allowed to raise their voices at players or do they have to talk to them gently? i'm a huge huge fan of Turner, he is one of my first Husker favorites but sheesh.

I apologize for my ignorance, but can you hunt pheasant in Nebraska in March?

Posted by: PT Husker on March 16, 2010 10:25AM CST
Bugatti, Only on controlled hunting areas such as the one listed in the article.

YOu are hunting planted birds. Some of these places have european style hunts where the birds are released in front of you and fly over your head.

I think there is room for civility in sports, even football. How would we like to hear cursing in the classroom by the biology teacher? It just isn't necessary to make a point. Coaches are also teachers who can find other ways to make points, like running laps.

RobotMonster. Gill never said anything about coaches not raising their voices or talking to the players gently. He just said no to profanity. And I would assume that an occasional lapse would be permitted in the heat of battle so long as it wasn't a pattern.

Kansas is the heart of the bible belt, so I would think there is a lot of support for what Gill is doing. It is hard to mandate civility so hiring only coaches who agreed in advance is really a novel idea. I have always liked Kansas and wish them the best except when playing Nebraska.

Well Shhhhhhooooooooooooooooot, there goes my dream of being Turner's Assistant head coach.

Posted by: rluben on March 16, 2010 10:49AM CST
Don't apologize for your ignorance Bugatti, I never do.

Just go with it like I do and when someone asks you something you can truthfully say I don't know.

Ignorance is bliss.

Posted by: Ray in Bellevue on March 16, 2010 10:51AM CST
rluben. Why not? I haven't seen any profanity coming from you on this blog, or for that matter, from anyone else either. It may be easier than you think, so go ahead and apply for that dream job. You can list all of us as references.

I wonder if this "Cussing" issue is why Gill and Jamie Williams parted ways.

I can't even imagine coaching defense without some colorful language once in awhile.

Not in the real world, might work in fairytale land.

Posted by: rluben on March 16, 2010 10:59AM CST
lol Ray I don't Cuss a whole lot unless I'm on a crabber in Alaska, then it's mandatory at least one cuss word in every sentence is mandatory...3 if you are dedicated.

Unless you are on a show on cable, then you have to tone it down to collect that payolla.

I just never associated cussing with character, I prefer to look at the whole body of work and the actions of a man.

If he's willing to run into a burning building to risk his life for anothers, I could care less if he's shouting F bombs while he's doing it or not.

PT, Islander/Husker, DebTu.

Getting back to Nebraska football, I am hoping for a great Spring Practice where everything falls into place. Even though I dare to point out the problems from last year, that doesn't mean an offensive renaissance is not going to happen. I just haven't seen any evidence of it, yet.

When I see that the foundation for a better offense is in place, then I will be as positive about Watson as I am about Doc's, or Connies, or Cook's programs or even Anderson whom I fully expect to turn things around by the end of the season.

But, the expectations for football are higher than any other sport at Nebraska, and Watson must produce this season so that an otherwise great team can win some championships. That's what it is all about.

Arizona supposedly had a pretty decent D Ray.

Maybe use the holiday Bowl as a preview for things to come...stay tuned.

I think every skill position will step it up a few notches this year and it won't look anything like last year.

I ignored it myself and didn't want to hear it, but we were thin at healthy O linemen last year.

This year it would seem that we will have better depth and should be more athletic at O line, that is if they can stay reasonably healthy.

We were kind of young last year too, at least in terms of actual playing time.

Should be fun to see what they can put together this year.

There are not any 4-letter words that could match the effectiveness of the Tom Osborne glare. I'm sure that Turner has that same ability to get a kid's attention.

I admire Turner and his Christian values and I wish him all the luck in the world, that is until he plays us but I am still glad we have Bo as our head coach rather than Turner. Bo has that very hard edge that a coach has to have to get to the top in college football not to mention outstanding confidence. I also believe that it will become apparent that Shawn Watson is a very good OC when he has the talent, depth and experience to work with. For all the fans that long for the triple option to come back, Turner doesn't even run that anymore who was arguably the best option QB we ever had.

Posted by: SuperHusker17 on March 16, 2010 1:29PM CST
I guess for the women's one, I feel like that'd be straight chalk, but I really didn't pay much attention to it outside of the Big 12, which I would think should do well as a conference. I feel like the men's bracket could be either really chalk or be a big mess.

As for Gill, I was a player that never really needed to be yelled at to get motivated. I feel like if you can't get motivated yourself then you obviously aren't that into it but that's just me. Sometimes that does work for people, and that's fine but I like that he's taking the approach that you don't need to swear at them up and down to reach the kids. Obviously if the kid does something wrong you don't pat him on the back like in the pee-wee leagues but if you don't need to swear then don't.

I was exaggerating to make a point. Football is an emotional game and to have a no profanties clause is dumb.

Posted by: GBR in Texas on March 16, 2010 1:39PM CST
My take on it is this...the words one uses to communicate is his/her vocabulary. The use of vocabulary comes down to one's habits. It's really that simple...it's a matter of choice.

Cussing isn't needed to punctuate a sentence when motivating a kid. If you believe in what you are saying then the passion and energy will show through. That being said, cursing doesn't bother me at all. I accept it as normal everyday language.

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on March 16, 2010 1:54PM CST
As someone who coaches college athletes today, I can say that boys born in the 90s don't respond well at all to being yelled or cursed at. It's a generational thing. You have to coddle the crap out of them.

Then again, maybe Bo proves me wrong.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on March 16, 2010 2:05PM CST
I support Gill 100% in this No Cursing attempt for a few reasons.

1. In today's world cursing and screaming your head off is no longer the primary or best way to get a kid to play hard for you. Most kids no longer respond to that. What kids are responding to now days is positive encouragement and a coach who backs them 100% and gets their point accross in different ways be it running or some other form of physical punishment.

2. By having this rule it stresses the point being made when you do occasionally slip up. There was a game back in TO's day where they Huskers were down going into half and it didn't seem like they were going to recover and beat this team. In the locker room at half when it was Tom's turn to speak all he said was " Well dang* lets knock the shoot* out of em" using a little stronger language. The team came out after the half and just tore the other team to pieces.

Now, had Tom been one of those coaches that cursed and screamed all the time would his team have responded the same way they did? IDK, but I like to think since he wasn't one of those coaches when the team heard him say that they knew that he wasn't happy with the way they were playing and they responded.

As a recently retired player and a newer coach I can attest to the fact that cursing and screaming your head off almost the entire time is not the way to go in today's sports.

Gill is on to something here. Especially with what happened at KU with the last staff.

Ha ha great minds think alike.

That's the point I was trying to make in my post. Today's athletes don't respond to the whole yelling and screaming thing. And it goes beyond those born in the 90's it's that way with the ones born in the early 2000's too.

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on March 16, 2010 2:11PM CST
HSB,

As a coach, you have to evolve to match the players you will be coaching. Bob Knight didn't, now he's unemployed and irrelevant. He could win his way in the '70s and '80s; it's a different world now.

Also, TG needs to do this to make a marked departure from his predecessor, who was known for verbally abusing his players to an extremely inappropriate level.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on March 16, 2010 2:15PM CST
Exiled:

yea players don't want to play for you if you get up in their face as much anymore. The occassional in your face screaming is needed to toughen them up, but you have to find other was to motivate them... that could be using a reward-punishment system or constant positive critisim mixed in with the occassional negative critisim.

Glad Bo's our coach! its a mans sport and its brutal! i wouldnt want a bible thumping coach who when he gets mad uses words like darnit, or heck or shoot! i want the coach who drops f-bombs when somebody eff's up! good pick T.O!!

Posted by: atlhusker on March 16, 2010 2:38PM CST
i wonder if he'll get mad if he hears his players curse?
i'd want to see that kind of passion from my players! me thinks KU may be goin a lil soft!

Posted by: SuperHusker17 on March 16, 2010 2:39PM CST
Yeah I know I had guys on some of my teams that it seemed as soon as they got yelled at they would just shut down. Sometimes it was a mental thing and they felt they were in the dog house or took it personally and others with the bigger egos just didn't feel like they should get yelled at. Best thing to prevent that is DON'T SCREW UP. Sometimes mistakes happen and I understand that but if you're a guy who doesn't like getting yelled at then you should be the first one to make sure you're doing your role right.

Posted by: PT Husker on March 16, 2010 3:02PM CST
To Cuss or not to Cuss. That is not even a question. I firmly believe you can get a point accross without using foul language. I also believe that Men who get upset about it should probably get over it. Mixed company is another matter. It is just Rude.

But Turner is the head coach. He makes the rules.

Deal with it or fold your hand and find another game.

My Mother was a very quiet and smallish lady. and Once in a while I heard her say dang. She taught schoool for 15 years and worked as a City clerk for another 20. Very seldem did she raise her voice in any way. But she could make people feel about a foot tall.

As we grew up in a rural area I have meant many many people that went to school to her. To the person they all say that you did not cross Gladys. She had their total respect and very seldom, if ever, raised her voice.

Wish I had gotten that skill from her.

huskersince devaney posts,

Bo has that very hard edge that a coach has to have to get to the top in college football not to mention outstanding confidence.

Tom Osborne and Barry Switzer both were at the top. They had little in common with each other or with Bo Pelini. You don't... have to be... any one certain way.

Trying to bring class to a town like Lawrence won't be easy. Good luck Turner!

Posted by: joe t on March 17, 2010 8:44AM CST
1. Who are these pansy kids these days that need all this "positive" encouragement? The corporate workplace is competitive in the real world. They don't hand out trophies for participating. Bo has a gift telling you how it is, but still building you up as a player, and still swears and yells.

2. As for Turner, he knows how he is manipulating Nebraska right now. Nice, glossy, rosy stories to get an inroads into the state. Once he steals a few recruits and chalks up a few wins against NU, I know ALL of you will feel differently. Turner is the enemy and you all need to wake up about that fact!

3. Where's some spring preview articles/blogs? Not about Kansas, but about the Huskers????
