Cody G: Still have to earn it
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on November 3, 2009 at 3:14PM CST
Bo Pelini wasn't going to declare anyone a starting quarterback on Tuesday (though he didn't offer a correction to a question that asked specifically how CODY GREEN would handle this OU defense).

I know it frustrates some that he won't flat-out commit to Green. But coaches have said all along players have to earn their position each week at practice. So Pelini would be going against what they're preaching if he just named Green the guy early this week.

It is worth noting that Green was the only quarterback to come before the media at Tuesday's press conference.

"I think I still have to earn (the job) and that's just the way everyone's mentality is around here: It's not your job right now. You have to go earn your spot," Green said.

Does the true freshman think he did well enough to keep the starting position?

"I think I did," Green said. "It was a W, but still I made some mistakes, of course. The interception and the fumble, those turnovers were costly and could have turned the game around. Thankfully we have the defense that is just being a beast of a defense right now. Those Blackshirts are really showing out right now."

Brian, I kinda thought that sip put a question to Bo, which indicated that Green would start.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on November 3, 2009 3:19PM CST
It really doesn't matter who starts what's important is who leads this team to a win.

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on November 3, 2009 3:22PM CST
I don't think people will have anything to say about this, but in Rivals' weekly rankings of the best offensive coordinators in the country, Shawn Watson is #12.

Carl Pelini is not in the top 25 DCs.
Bo Pelini is not in the top 25 HCs.

Posted by: leftcoastfaNatic on November 3, 2009 3:24PM CST
throw46-

I heard the question that you are referring to also, and Bo did not make any attempt to correct it.

Posted by: throw46 on November 3, 2009 3:25PM CST
low country...to most husker fans your right, to Lee and Green and respective camps your wrong.

Posted by: Flopper on November 3, 2009 3:26PM CST
I would like to see us use a similar system Urban Myer used with Chris Leak and Tim Tebow during Tebows freshman year. I just want to win. As a Husker fan, please, just win. I cannot believe the Huskers that I have grown up with have not won a league champioship is 1999. Please, just win.

Posted by: throw46 on November 3, 2009 3:26PM CST
left coast....Sip is a tricky guy.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on November 3, 2009 3:27PM CST
sorry I thought I was voicing as a fan...next time I will remember I speak for the players.

Posted by: charger on November 3, 2009 3:28PM CST
WE just keep plugging away & they will get there. GBR

Posted by: leftcoastfaNatic on November 3, 2009 3:29PM CST
Very smoooooooooth that Sip guy.

Posted by: throw46 on November 3, 2009 3:29PM CST
Low....and for some others who (ie. Sip) have made their thoughts known.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on November 3, 2009 3:32PM CST
Low Country agreed. I think some fans put to much on who they think should start. Like you said, it does not matter who, just who helps us get a W. I do think though Cody will start, but if he has a very bad week of practice he may not. I like it that they still have to earn it. They have to show up at practice everyday.

Posted by: leftcoastfaNatic on November 3, 2009 3:33PM CST
If there is a win on Saturday in our future, I think that Cody is the right person to help us get it. Take off the handcuffs and let him make some plays.

Posted by: redone on November 3, 2009 3:33PM CST
Man, the NU football team must be in a real mess. Bo has been have live day time news conferences reguarding the problems of the team. That only indicates that it is in a real mess. He said earlier that Green was not ready for the job and that he was not going to put him in, and then there he is. Bo is talking out one side of his mouth and then the other. Does that mean he don't know what he is talking about or just trying to find an answer someone will buy. He is a worse communicator then Solich was. I think its time for RED ALERT TIME.

Posted by: throw46 on November 3, 2009 3:34PM CST
Flopper...
My prediction for the OU game.
Start Lee....lose.
Start Green...Lose.
Play then both and pray....might be able to win.

Throw46,
I had to move closer to my screen I thought the poor girl was lopside and had a strange discoloring.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on November 3, 2009 3:36PM CST
IMO The Huskers are at an advantage they have 2 QBs capable with game experience.....l will let them play the game and would love to see that both QBs contributed and the offense shined.....only time will tell. It's true I'm living in the future but it's only an hour ahead of you LOL

Posted by: throw46 on November 3, 2009 3:37PM CST
I don't know if she's lopsided or not....won't let me get close enough to find out.

Posted by: Click_on_Husker on November 3, 2009 3:38PM CST
Redone ... you sound like Nancy Pelosi.

Posted by: fleaflicker on November 3, 2009 3:38PM CST
I just have four words for OU's defense.......Please don't kill Cody!!

Posted by: leftcoastfaNatic on November 3, 2009 3:39PM CST
Bo Knows!!!! His intense desire to win and zero tolerance for anything else more than makes up for any deficiencies that he may have on the offensive side of the ball. And said deficiencies are not nearly as great as some people are trying to make them out to be. This is of course just my never to be humble opiniion.

GBR!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: rluben on November 3, 2009 3:42PM CST
You know Brian I have to agree with that train of thought.

You can't say that the competition is open for every spot every week and that it's earned in practice then turn around and name a starter on Tuesday.

You'd lose your guys respect real quick and then things would get real ugly.

I do some complaining about our Offense, but I still love the effort and the want to that is out there on display every Saturday.

Pretty soon...someday...sometime...somehow...someway that want to is going to translate into solid, sometimes near flawless execution. The attitude, desire, work ethic, team chemistry and coaching is there, it will come together and the coaches and players will get it running on all cylinders.

Posted by: redfaced on November 3, 2009 3:43PM CST
Cody definitely showed flashes of great play against Baylor, but we need other guys to make plays on that offense. Really our best chance of beating OU is a healthy Roy Helu. When he's not hurt he's one of the top 10 backs in the country. Hopefully this is the week for Helu's return.

Posted by: fleaflicker on November 3, 2009 3:44PM CST
I think Coach Pelini is trying to light a fire under the offense's arse. We can't have a bunch of three and outs this Saturday because our D won't be able to stop them all of the time. We need to go 2nd and five or less. I'm afraid that 3rd and long could be an adventure for our offense.

Posted by: redfaced on November 3, 2009 3:45PM CST
Every down will be an adventure against OU.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on November 3, 2009 3:50PM CST
What we need to do is get get in to 2nd and five, second and 2 situations on a regular basis. When you do that, it opens up the offense and helps the QB, where you don't have to have a must pass situations. That helps the QB no matter who he is.

Posted by: earniechambers on November 3, 2009 3:53PM CST
Islander
I like what your saying, it seems like a sound game plan.

Posted by: JamesoN on November 3, 2009 3:53PM CST
Come on guys have some optimism, who says that our defense won't harrass them as well? This game may be won by whoever gets to 14 first and if that is the case we have just as good of a chance as them.

Posted by: rluben on November 3, 2009 3:53PM CST
I'm still going to install my power O for them though.

Posted by: TommyOC on November 3, 2009 3:54PM CST
re-done "Does that mean he don't know what he is talking about or just trying to find an answer someone will buy. He is a worse communicator then Solich was."

You just can't make this stuff any funnier. Keep em coming there Jethro.

Posted by: no nothing on November 3, 2009 3:54PM CST
Is the offense working on doing any new things from here on out? Switching QB's and lighting fires under players sounds very good, but what they need to do IMO is to somehow learn how to run block in the next 3 days.

Posted by: Low Country Husker on November 3, 2009 3:55PM CST
Rluben who are your fullbacks? Suh and Crick?

Posted by: earniechambers on November 3, 2009 3:55PM CST
My sources tell me that Suh has Gieco insurance and that his car is already in a local shop being repaired.

Posted by: Goldenrod Husker on November 3, 2009 3:55PM CST
I don't like redone at all but I wouldn't go so low as to call him like Nancy Pelosi. That is just beyond fighting words. lol

Posted by: TommyOC on November 3, 2009 4:01PM CST
Start Cody and mix in a little mis-direction by also playing Zac. I think that'd be rather interesting.

Posted by: fleaflicker on November 3, 2009 4:02PM CST
no nothing......yep......run blocking by the o-line and perimeter blocking by our receivers will be key, IMO. And I predict that the leading receivers this Sat will be our tight ends.

When President Obama makes a speech to the Joint Congress, there is nothing more irritating to me than watching Nancy Pelosi sitting behing him with that silly smile on her face and starting to stand up and cheer even before Obama finishes his sentence. It's so annoying.

NEWS FLASH....

Darrell Scott is leaving CU to play somewhere else. The news people are calling this a blow to the program, but the kid just wasn't good enough to play. 5 stars anyone?

you in here bashing on folks again. Haven't you learned your lesson?

TommyOC said impants, yum!

Scott just wasn't really "coached up" to his potential over there at CU. He's also from out in California and we all know those 5* players from there are pretty much a waste of a scholarship.

earnie,

Out here in New England, we have restaurants called Friendly's that are like Denny's plus they have elaborate ice cream desserts. My sources say you should try the Big Two Do.

Posted by: earniechambers on November 3, 2009 4:07PM CST
I read an interview with Nancy Pelosi once regarding football

She said she believed that offenses that can get to 2nd and 5 or 2nd and 2 will have a better chance than if they have a third and long, I thought it was very profound myself

Posted by: rluben on November 3, 2009 4:08PM CST
Hopefully they've been giving some extra attention to FB lead blocking and getting those things squared away execution wise and assignment wise.

The lead back has to actually block someone, not just run by them then look for someone else as the one he ran by makes the tackle.

Receivers need to make the catches, they just need to execute at a high level no matter what the play is.

That's what I'm hoping to see is better execution and making plays that are there to make. That's been a huge issue so far.

I'm thinking they are going to do a better job at it this week and the next and the next...play time is over, now it's time to go to work, but have some fun with it too.

Got to execute better no matter the scheme or who's playing.

Posted by: TommyOC on November 3, 2009 4:09PM CST
what's an impant Nish?

earnie, it's good to see your sense of humor is still intact. LOL

Posted by: TommyOC on November 3, 2009 4:13PM CST
re-done err Jethro - Can you please explain to the rest of the class what an impant or implant is?

In order for you to gragiate from the turd grade, you'll need to know this information and be able to recite it to the rest of your class. Maybe you should give Uncle Jed a call. He'll know the answer.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on November 3, 2009 4:15PM CST
Can you imagine the uproar if they run a play with Suh at fullback and he gets hurt. I know injuries are a part of football, but we need him more on defense. Let's leave him there.

Posted by: TomOs on November 3, 2009 4:22PM CST
OU offense is no better than VT... we will be alright.. this is not last years OU team.. our D will more than take care of their end of the bargain.. the O will just have to play better than they have the last 3 games.. and we always have Henery.. he may just end up winning the game..

If there ever was a time for Watson to shed his role as a conservative playcaller this Saturday is it. We must gamble and accept the results.

Vanilla will not cut it. It has to be pistachio with Macadamia nuts. And throw in some sprinkles for good measure.

Posted by: rluben on November 3, 2009 4:27PM CST
Huh, how's he going to get hurt any easier at FB than at DT? Are these guys china dolls?

Is a LB going to submarine him and take himself out of the play?

I just don't cotton to this you can only play one way and have to be a specialist crap.

And I sure as heck have an issue with ANY player 18-22 who doesn't have good enough conditioning to run 5-15 yrds with a 35 sec rest inbetween each play and play and entire game every snap both ways if that's what he's asked to do.

You play to win and you do what gives you the best opportunity to win..the day you start playing not to get anyone hurt is the day you best just hang up the whistle and the cleats.

It's football....in football there is always a risk of an injury.

Don't like the risks take up tiddly winks.

Not to be confrontational, but I despise that train of thought of not wanting to play someone where he could help out just to avoid injury in a game that is a physical game.

Posted by: Dave on November 3, 2009 4:30PM CST
They'll start whichever one they feel will be able to execute the things they need to do to defeat OU, which will not be an easy task.

I know they don't like switching QB's around, but a win would be sweet.

On the other hand, maybe Bo will check out this blog 1st to see what the geniuses on here would do. Of course some have already given up on the season, but I'm not looking for him to follow that lead.

Posted by: TomOs on November 3, 2009 4:33PM CST
K st ran off tackle on them for good gains.. I think OU let up a little while having a big lead.. but even when K st was decreasing the lead.. in the second half.. OU D was rattled and the O was ineffective.. they are NOT world beaters.. we have to go into the game with a good mind set that they are no better than us.. last year we went into that game already beat.. and made it happen..

Posted by: PT Husker on November 3, 2009 4:35PM CST
IMO, Zac is done unless there is an injury. Wats, admittedly dumbed down the O to accomadate Cody. And he throttled him down a bunch when we got a comfortable lead. Yet we saw Zac not at all. I could be wrong but I think, right or wrong, they have made the switch.

Posted by: TommyOC on November 3, 2009 4:37PM CST
I agree PT

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on November 3, 2009 4:40PM CST
QUESTION!

Has Bo given out Blackshirts yet???? Seems like that has gotten lost in all this talk about the offense and who the starting QB will be and stuff.

Mayb he did I just missed that update a while ago.

Is he switching that to an end of the season on mid-season award now? Cuz it used to be that they were awarded at the beginning of the season... now he's saying they have to earn them.

I think the way Bo is doing it is probably better in todays game b/c offenses are so multiple. one second you're play a 4-3 defense... the next you're in a dime with totally different people out there.

Posted by: rluben on November 3, 2009 4:40PM CST
You naysayers would sing a different tune the first time Suh or Crick blew up a LB or a DT on an iso and the tailback busted off a 50 yrd run.

Both Crick and Suh have a good enough 5 yrd burst to get to the hole quick enough and not delay the tailback...if it was a prob you could just use counter action steps for the tailback while the FB went directly to the hole.

I could care less if they never do it or not, but if they struggle running the ball I'll know that it could have been done and would have been presented a challenge to defend.

I hope they get the run game going just using Legate and he actually improves on finding a man and taking him out of the play. he's shown flashes of being capable and in time should be a really good FB.

I hope the HB (TE) they like to use as a lead back lined up in the slot starts getting it done to.

I hope they use some play action pass and throw to the FB or HB sometime too and that they dial it up at a perfect time.

Posted by: TomOs on November 3, 2009 4:41PM CST
JMO.. but the Baylor game was Green's game to win or lose.. there maybe a little different mind set (used it again).. if Green is ineffective.. of all the games, Bo wants to win..its this one, B. Stoops, and Lee may come in, if Green is off his game..

Posted by: rluben on November 3, 2009 4:44PM CST
What kind of run game does or did K sate use most the time TomOs? Was it a lead back or just a single back or?

Posted by: PT Husker on November 3, 2009 4:45PM CST
If Watson does not open up the playbook Green has no game to get off of. As Shatel said. A big twelve QB should not have training wheels.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on November 3, 2009 4:46PM CST
rluben:

"You play to win and you do what gives you the best opportunity to win..the day you start playing not to get anyone hurt is the day you best just hang up the whistle and the cleats."

Hmm wonder if anyone explained this to Callahan when he was going through his coaching career...

*** A little correction to that statement should be you play to win the game with the intent of not getting someone hurt, but you have to be willing that someone at sometime will get hurt b/c its the nature of the game.

I say that b/c you always play with the intent of not getting hurt... nobody wants injuries. But I understand your statment. You're saying the second you stop trying to win is the second you need to stop coaching.

Posted by: no nothing on November 3, 2009 4:53PM CST
Well, Watson may have "dumbed down" the offense for Cody, but Cody's offense scored more points than the smart boys offense did the previous two weeks. I think they ought to put back in the smart boys offense this Saturday night. We can't be going into this game without our A-game in. We just can't afford to lose the third straight home game IMO by "dumbing down" the offensive game plan!

Yeah he gave them out before the TT game HSB I believe.

Eventually it will get back to them getting them before the first game...when Bo feels the transition is complete to the culture, mindset and performance he expects all the time from is D.

That's my take on it.

Maybe next yr from the get go they will be at that place Bo envisions them being as a unit.

I think he was waiting for his LB's and Secondary to get caught up a little closer with his D lines level of play.

Do you happen to know what overall rank our defense is currently?

I know we're in the top ten in scoring defense and yrds allowed.

Just wondering where our overall defensive rank is. I have a hard time believing it's anywhere outside the top 10.

What improvement that is:

2007- 112 of 120 in defense
2008- 51 of 120 in defense
2009- ???? of 120 in defense

Posted by: no nothing on November 3, 2009 5:02PM CST
I really liked it that when the defense was on the field he had his guys right there where he could talk to all of them at once. I think he found out he can be just as effective down there on the field. I am sure the players appreciated it too.
If I could just get him to run the full back, just once this year, I may be quite. Well, maybe not. I have more ideas! All I want these guys to do is be all they can be.

I have no issue with Cody starting other than the dumbing down issue. Hopefully Wats did it just for his first start to get his feet under him and now will open the playbook. I truly expect that's the case. He's a tremendous athlete who graduated HS early to get her to compete for the job. Now that he earned a start, I don't see him letting anyone take it away. The rest of the offense needs to step up and play better around him. A healthy RB would make a huge difference on Saturday.

WyHuskerFan:

Thanks.

That's some pretty good improvement in 2 years if you ask me.

So what is Bo now?

2003: Weren't the Huskers like 11th in defense
2004: 3rd
2005: 3rd
2006: 1st
2007: 3rd
2008: 51st
2009: 9th

I think those are all right... not 100% sure... my memory doesn't work well when studying for biology and trying to talk Husker. But dang Bo is crazy with his defenses.

Defense is on track and I'd like to think Carl can keep it there while Bo turns his attention to offense. No slam on Wats, but having the HC watching is more of a motivator. Lots of talent that just needs to put it all together and play a complete game.

The scary thing is our D isn't even where he want s it to be or where it can be yet.

I mean our secondary can and will improve, our LB's will for sure improve as the Pelini campaign continues and out D line will get better as hard as that is to comprehend.

Crick's turning into a monster our DE's are really starting to come on strong, not as much admiring Suh going on as there was in the beginning of the yr.

Baby Stein's getting some solid game experience.

The secondary is starting to have the lightbulb flicker on and off instead of complete darkness.

So I think there's hope for the O to turn it around this yr.

Look at the play of the LB's from the first few games to now.

If we can start getting better overall execution from our skill guys and dudes busting open some holes consistently and not drop so may balls...we could maybe just be dangerous enough to get this train rolling.

I think I'll try to get excited about the possibilities ahead instead of apprehensive about what has happened in the past possibly being the way the future will go.

Should they bring back the Fake Field goal that everyone knew we as going to run?

It did work great the first time. After that, not so good.

Thoughts?

I wonder if Cody ran any option in HS. LaTravis is another healthy body they could scheme around. Play him at the H back or the old wing back.

Ehhh, let's not talk about BGR if he's not here to defend himself.

Dude just gets carried away or something for some reason, who knows what really eats at him to go off on folks the way he does.

I still try to see the good in a person if at all possible.

No need to be mean and rub it in I guess.

Even if it's kind fun lol.

I thought LT at the beginning of the season .. he would make a good wildcat or whatever you want to call it.. but others said.. whats the surprise there.. he already is a QB.. Thomas at K st is a big bruiser and was a QB..

WyHuskeFan:

Yea, but opposing coaches of TO said one of the scariest things about playing TO was looking at him on the other side line and knowing that he probably knew your offense better than you...

Im pretty sure if TO looked at our offense he could help Wats get some stuff sorted out.

Plus, it would be a great learning opprotunity for Wats.

RL is a peacenik...who woulda thought? LOL

I have previously dismissed the Latravis, multiple QB, weirdcat alignment, but given our injuries...let it roll. If he was playing LB, he must be a tough dude and we ought to put him on the field for a few of these just to show thanks for switching positions.

Yea, Green ran an option in High School. But it was more like that West Virginia Spread Option stuff.

He was really good at it. Got to see him play his senior year.

He ran the read option in HS I believe, but I don't think the traditional triple option from the I.

Which isn't an O you learn in one week, maybe install a few plays as you go, but when it's not your staple O you don't just install it in one week.

I mean just the down the line option, fake dive to FB then, continue down the line reading the end is complicated than it looks to install across the board for all positions.

Plus that one play can be ran from a few different sets and motions or shifts.

Then there's the counter option where the QB does a 360 after taking the ball from center and just getting the footwork and precision down is a process of reps and timing.

Remember the O Tommy Frazier ran out of the Gun against FL St and Charlie ward and in some other games?

Now something along those lines could be installed as some packages for Cody I'd think.

It was some option out of the gun mixed with run n shoot and spread before there was a term spread O.

Charlie Ward ran the same O at FL St too for the most part.

Sipp said after the game the Wats and TO spent some time talking. Bet it was not their last conversation. I think perhaps watts wants this as bad as we do????

Hey my only goal when confronting a bully is to debullyize them and let them know that behavior won't fly in my presence.

Just quite a bit harder to actually execute a debullification procedure online than it is in person.

Much simpler process in person lol.

No Nothing - Your Avatar looks alot like me! If the "DOG" understands, "SCRIPTING" the 1st 10 - 15 plays, means these are plays you'll run regardless of down & distance or what allignment the "D" is in. For "Buffalo Bill" Cody it would mean plays he & the team run well. Now of course, this runs counter to Dr. "Hollywood" Watson's philosophy of "taking what the defense gives you!" Mike Shannahan, ex Bronco coach, use to do this.

Who is going to start at quarterback? That, my friends is the question. I don't think Bo knows. I am waiting for another live new conference today, maybe Bo has something to tell us. Man, things must be bad if he has to give news conference everyday, maybe he can't make up his mine. Josh Freeman is the starting quarterback for a pro team, maybe Bo could get Josh to come in and give him some advice. Kansas ST.---Josh Freeman hits big time.

Come on corncobs, don't give up the ship, even though its sinking. Have faith, look to Tom Thumb, he will have then answers that Bo doesn't know. Bo could use Josh Freeman, as he is now a starter and from Kansas ST. you know the one that Nebr. lost to K-ST. How about Gabbert the other one that got away among many others.

Who is starting at QB in game 8, Watson is a classic, if you haven't figured it out by now your probably not going to. All I know is that it is a secret, it's a secret because we don't have a clue. If we are sharing snaps in practice for 3 weeks that would mean we have 2 quarterbacks that are each half ready. Our offense is in total shambles and until somebody down there can make a decision it is going to stay that way. Thanks alot Watson you've made Callahan look like a genius.

Right on jd hail. Your one smart Nebraskan. NU will wish they keep Callahan as dark days are still coming.

Bring back B. Callahan. Dark days are ahead.
