Checking out the numbers
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on October 9, 2009 at 4:03AM CST

Yes, I really am posting this around 4 a.m. Didn't get out of the press box until 1:30. Then Rosenthal and I thought we'd live on the edge and eat a litle Steak & Shake. An hour later, the food came. The tip was minimal.

Anyway, while I watch the end of the replay of the Husker-Missouri game on ESPN, here are some interesting numbers from NU's 27-12 win:

Blaine Gabbert hadn't thrown an interception in 164 passes until he was intercepted by Ndamukong Suh. Then Dejon Gomes claimed an interception on the next play.

This is the first time since 2003 that Nebraska has held its first five opponents to 20 points or less.

Nebraska did not allow a point after its two turnovers tonight despite the fact that both came in Husker territory. Nebraska has not allowed a point after any of its six turnovers this year.

It was a career day for Niles Paul, who had six catches for 102 yards and two touchdowns.

Suh had a pass breakup on Thursday, giving him 12 for his career. He now holds the position record for pass breakups, moving him out of a tie with Steve Warren.

Nebraska won its conference opener for the 33rd time in 35 seasons.

The Huskers tied the greatest fourth-quarter comeback in Husker history, rallying from a 12-0 deficit. In 1966, Nebraska came back from a 19-7 score to Colorado to win 21-19.

It was Bo Pelini's first win against a ranked opponent. He is 1-4 against ranked teams.

The penalty numbers for this game were something. Missouri had 8 penalties for 100 yards. Nebraska had 12 for 108 yards.

Stat of the night: Nebraska had 109 yards of offense through three quarters. The Huskers had 154 yards in the final quarter. Total yardage ended up in favor of the Huskers by a count of 263-225.

1966 sucks.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on October 9, 2009 4:11AM CST
Thanks for the heads up BC. My Nebraska bat phone woke me up so that I could get this #1 post. The Cubans and check are in the mail.

Suh can do many things... not sure if he is better than Cody Green though.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on October 9, 2009 4:13AM CST
Greg Davis is a good offensive coordinator. Er... I mean.... Shawn Watson is a good coordinator.

Yes I know my enemies. They are the teachers who taught me to fight me.

Compromise, conformity, assimilation, submission, ignorance, hypocrisy, brutality, the elite.

All of which are American dreams. They'll be no shelter here!

LJS. I agree 100% with the grades you provided for this performance. Not one of those grades should come as a surprise. Last night things worked out for us. That doesn't happen very often.Enjoy the win.

________

that IS impressive!

The truly sad thing about the game was that, with 30 sec. left in the third quarter, I turned the tv off and went to bed. This morning I cursed myself to the point when my son-in-law heard me he took the dog outside cause he thought I was going to kick it.

The Huskers wanted it more.

Any idea if Helu will be OK, I saw nothing about his shoulder anywhere.

Posted by: AndrewSa2 on October 9, 2009 7:34AM CST
Step you are right Cody Green will be our starter next year.

The General shall lead them period.

I still would have liked to see Cody Green in for a series considering our troubles running the ball. I understand not wanting to put a true freshman in that atmosphere, but that kid has some wheels. I think he would be awesome out of the wildcat.

Posted by: AndrewSa2 on October 9, 2009 7:55AM CST
Both offensive coordinators should be questioned. Even if they did blitz every play you need to run the ball in that rain.

Reminds me alot of 1996....."Scott Frost is terrible, Scott Frost sucks".....

5 games in Lee is growing and learning....nobody becomes a winner like Tommy Frazier in 5 games....not even Tommy...have some faith in the coaches they have this team winning again....enjoy it!

Lee was very fortunate that NU's D was stellar.
He was off all night. Watson dialed it up on a long pass at the right time and the turnovers were the game breaker.
As previously mentioned, Lee is not a runner. Pretty clear that he isn't the dual threat that he was billed as. He wasn't calm or poised either.
But he is a very good front runner.

Gabbert went downhill after he hurt is ankle, from then on the were one dimensional.

Great win. Suh is the man.

TOO BAD! OMG, it was such a great turn around! I mean last year's Mizzou game I think I shut it off midway thru the 3rd since we were getting pummeled, but last nite we were still in it and I just had this feeling like we were gonna pull out the 'W'!

I'll watch a close defensive game till the end usually anyway.

Man was that exciting!

Yea, I dont see why we cant start usuing him in that capacity, I mean, FL did that w Tebow his first year there...why not with CG?

Top 10 in 2 weeks......count on it!

Posted by: bruNo on October 9, 2009 8:09AM CST
I actually don't think we have a top ten offense after what I saw last night, I mean Lee just has to make some significant improvements. I see us as in the 13-15 range, though our D is top 10 for sure and I suppose if we win 10-11 games then you could make a case for us being ranked in the top 10 as a team.

Posted by: Robka on October 9, 2009 8:15AM CST
Zac is the man for our offense because he knows it well and takes care of the football. Hell,
Gerburt should have thrown about 6 INT's last night if our D would have held on to the ball. Mr. Lee had poise when it mattered and I'm not worried about our offense at all. (except the health of Roy's shoulder) Great fourth qtr win.

GO BIG ZAC!!!

Posted by: bruNo on October 9, 2009 8:20AM CST
I just think has to get up to speed against these better teams w better athletes, he seems kind of slow in his delivery and the better dbs have time to jump on our receivers before the ball gets there.

It's his 1st year as a starter so I give him some slack there and hope he gets his timing down better.

Speaking of numbers.....In 1968, MO was at NU on a beautiful sunny football day. Twice, Yes Twice, that day a Husker was hit in the back by a screwy bounce of the football while heading downfield on punt coverage. I believe that both times it was Dana Anderson (?). On both occasions, MO got the ball deep in NU territory and that fabulous MO FB , James Wilder took it in the South end zone and the Huskers lost.

I think that the offensive gameplan for the Huskers was pretty woeful. We seemed to do best with the two back set with Lee taking the snap in the shallow shotgun formation. It was run so little. Defensively, the Huskers are the real deal.

Looked to me that Helu separated his right shoulder on that long run. He was quite a man to stay in there and take it to the endzone on the next play.

Overall, though I am struttin' proud this morning.

Welcome to the big leagues, Mr. Gabbert. (I wonder what Tyler G is thinking right now?)

gordito,

Wilder was in '78 wasnt he?

Posted by: bruNo on October 9, 2009 9:03AM CST
One of the greatest running backs in Missouri history, who went on to a distinguished professional career in the NFL. In three years at MU, Wilder set the school rushing record with 2,357 yards (broken in 1987). But it's the 1978 Nebraska game for which he is probably best remembered. In that game, he carried 28 times for 181 yards and four touchdowns including the game-winner in a 35-31 MU victory. He led Missouri in rushing three times, and holds or shares four school records. Was the MVP of the 1978 Liberty Bowl game that Missouri won over LSU. Was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and became the Bucs all-time leading rusher, and also a Pro Bowl selection, during nine seasons there. Wrapped up his pro career playing with the Washington Redskins and Detroit Lions. A native of Sikeston, Mo., hence his nickname - "The Sikeston Train."

Yes, Wilder was 1978. 1968 is the number of Gorditos that Gordito ate in that picture.

Please read to calm yourself about the offense: I think some of you are underlooking the impact of the weather on Zac's and Blaine's passing percentages. Look at Miami vs. VT. Also, no one, even with gloves, where catching consistently. Further, Lee could not grip the ball well and this lead to behind passes and over throws (Blaine was worse in this, except for inside slants).

The secondary played outstanding and the pressure from (only) our front four was dominate. Suh is our best defensive lineman ever and is the best in the country, bar none! He got screwed by the refs on at least 3 calls. The defensive game plan won the game anad gave the chances we needed to win.

Forward - a win is a win, especially down there where it hasn't been pretty and we have shaken that monkey off our back. I truely sense the tide is turing and that the team is starting to feel that swagger. Special teams needs to get fixed or it could cost us one game (likely OU).

Keep the faith and positive waves...the Big 12 North is ours to lose!!!

Posted by: bruNo on October 9, 2009 11:00AM CST
The WR's we have are good enough to be the top group in the country...
_____________

WRONG!!! Our WRs are good, not great, they don't strike fear in ya and they aren't close to being one of the top WR corps in the country...have you seen LSU's receivers, now those guys scare ya, cept their qb cant get them the ball. USC has some sick receivers.

Ours are not on that level.

You got me guys. When one is as old and decrepit as I am, names and dates tend to mingle. It was 68 when it happened and the final score was 16-12. Dan Devine took the Tigers south for a bowl and whoooped on Alabama for sure. (Why do you suppose I can't remember the FB's name. I recall him scoring both times coming right at me in the SE End Zone) Yes......I have consumed too many of those South of the border goodies, but my favorite is Poll del Mojo de Ajo.

And while I'm discussing the reason for my girth, if any of you Lincolnites have a hankering for some "Real" Mexican food, I recommend El Rancho on the NE corner of 27th and "O" sts. Don't order any of that Americanized stuff though, order the good stuff.
