Burkhead's return?
Posted by: Brian Rosenthal on November 3, 2009 at 4:56PM CST
Bo Pelini shed some positive light on Nebraska’s running back situation Tuesday when he said true freshman Rex Burkhead could return in time for the Huskers’ final game at Colorado.

“Obviously, for sure for the bowl game,” Pelini said.

Burkhead, who’s rushed 23 times for 118 yards, has missed the last three games with a foot injury.

Great to be getting a proven playmaker back

Posted by: Mountainman@ on November 3, 2009 5:11PM CST
Don't count your bowl games before they're hatched. Bowl eligibility requires six wins, and right now the Huskers have five. Remember what happened in 2007? Each of the four remaining opponents will bust a gut trying to beat the Huskers. With Okies, no explanation required. Kansas, K-State and Mizzou are all fighting for top spot in the B-12 North. Hawkins at Colorado (in Boulder) will be fighting for his job. There's not a gimmee in the batch. Huskers better get that offense in gear if they want to survive.

Have we qualified for a bowl game? I just saying, maybe we better win one more before we talk about "the bowl game."

Glad Bo has more confidence than some of us.

Bowl Game?Don't talk about a bowl game! Are you kidding me? Bowl Game?! I'm just hoping we can win a game, another game!"

Callahan didn't have any lack of confidence, did he?

Callahan didn't have a defense.

BO BIG RED!!!

Hey PT, at least there is one fanatic on this thread:)

GO BIG FAITH!!!

Posted by: atlhusker on November 3, 2009 5:43PM CST
i wouldnt want him to come back this year! not the way the oline is blocking! get ready for next year!
here's my thing y cant we run like we did against VT? we dominated them the whole game. i thought that was a peek into what to expect this year but nope! havent seen em since!!
i dont think green's ready either! i'd start zac see how he does. if he stinks it up take him out but i think lee will be better composed and better manage against an attack style defense like OU has. green is still green. pun intended but if lee cant score or move the ball in the red zone then put green in. at least he's a legitimate run threat!

Posted by: atlhusker on November 3, 2009 5:50PM CST
about the defense and lack of turnovers. i read an article the other day and marvin sanders said the defense bo ran that year when they led th ecountry in tunrovers was a different defense. he said this is more of an attack style defense. really?! can we go back to that defense cuz this defense is anything but attack style its more of a read and react instead of strike! our db's are always gettin beat deep, we have no speed rushers on the ends and we play like this mobile zone coverage instead of man 2 man. our blitz pakcages dont work. our turnovers come from our front 4 which is the best in the country! the rest of the seven are average at best! our secondary coverage should be called toast cuz they're always gettin burned!!

Posted by: Robka on November 3, 2009 5:50PM CST
Alt - I agree, I'm afraid Cody might turn into a turnover machine against OU. Lee knows the offense better and if our Oline could give him time (I realize that is a big IF) he definitely has better accuracy when he doesn't have happy feet. I would like Cody better if he can take care of the football and run wild:) Whomever starts I will cheer hard.

GO BIG RED!!!

...Obviously, for sure for the bowl game,” Pelini said....

Hey only one more game to qualify. Question is which one is it.

Swooners. Nope
Kstate perhaps
Kansas Nope
Colorado Nope

Posted by: Robka on November 3, 2009 5:59PM CST
althusker - I have to beg to differ on our secondary and LB's. Yes we have had breakdowns like even the best D's do, but for the most part our secondary has covered & tackled quite well. Dennard, Gomes, Prince, & dillard have been great. I must be watching a different Nebraska team than u, because I think our D is awesome, but I do understand it starts with our front four. You must have wiped the old Cosgrove D out of your memory, because that was a read and barely react Defense. Plus our LB's & DB's are VERY young and I think they have played well for their age.

BO BIG BLACKSHIRTS!!!

Posted by: atlhusker on November 3, 2009 6:01PM CST
im thinkn can we get Scott Frost to come back and coach the qb's or maybe even the offense?
1)he's a native, 2)he's winner, made n.iowa a top division 2 school in the country, and 3)he's a national champion and arguably one of the best qb's ever at NU. i said ARGUABLY!
and 4)he must be doing something right up there in Eugene! there a top 5 team now and did u see what their qb did to USC? they made the trojans look like huskers! and 5)what better way to teach young qb's like lee, green, ltw, spano and martinez the real way to run the zone read than a qb who ran the option himself! i know they're different but this zone read is anything but effective or even convincing!
i put it like this. if colorado come a calln i hope wats a walkn and frost is comin back home!

Posted by: JayBr on November 3, 2009 6:04PM CST
atlhusker....if you want a read and react defense, check out highlights of Nebraska '07. While it's true our defensive ends are not necessarily speed rushers, they have done a great job of contain....that is forcing the quarterback to step up in the pocket. This has greatly benefitted Suh and Crick. Perhaps you've missed a few little things like Suh's INT and deflections and tackles, or Crick's tackles and sacks. To say our blitz packages don't work is questionable....since we don't blitz often (don't need to). Turnovers do need to improve and they probably will as our safety play improves.

Posted by: JamesoN on November 3, 2009 6:06PM CST
Have some faith for God's sake. Sure we may not win out the rest of the year, but what happened to everyone that was always full of confidence that we could win any game we played. This year is no where near as bad as 2007 yet everyone is bitching and moaning how we won't win another game. At least we will have a defense that will keep us in everygame and give us a chance to win. One lucky break our way in all but the OU game could be all we need to win. How about if you're going to bitch and moan to everyone we aren't going to win a game you do it to the people around you, not online. Some of us come here to see and read how the team is improving and actually support the team no matter what. I don't see why everyone is so pessimistic hell we are 3 points away from being 7-1 so just lighten up.

BO BIG RED!!!

Posted by: WyHuskerFan on November 3, 2009 6:07PM CST
A bowl bid is certainly within our reach. I don't think it's an overstatment to expect a sixth win and an invitation. I do think we've let the last gimme (ISU) slip away. However with the turmoil in Boulder, that team will be in total disarray before we get there. At 2-6 they may have a shot at one more win at ISU, but don't count on it. Huskers likely take 2 of the 4 remaining games. 3 of 4 quite possible if O gets it together. Saturday should be a good barometer. Play OU tough, win or lose, and this team will have the confidence it needs to win out. If they get blown out Bo will have his work cutout for him.

Looks like Darrel Scott is trying to get his release. Wants to talk to Bo.

GO BIG DARREL SCOTT AS A HUSKER!

It would be great to have Frost on staff.....he coaches receivers at Oregon, so perhaps if the bloggers who want Watson and Gilmore gone get their way, there is room for Frost.

Posted by: Robka on November 3, 2009 6:10PM CST
JamesoN - While I know OU will be really tough, I still believe we can easily win 3 or the next 4 and that would put us at the top of the north. Some of us have plenty of faith my fellow Cornhusker:) Plus OU is not impossible, we just need to play a complete game in all three phases.

BO BIG RED!!!

Posted by: atlhusker on November 3, 2009 6:10PM CST
robka-
i'll give u that the db's they're way better tacklers than last year and dillard is playin like an all american but im not sold on them being better covers!
if baylor wasnt soo bad on offense they coulda easily mopped up the floor with us! how many td's did they drop last week! nothing wrong with being lucky but that ish isnt gonna fly against ou, and kansas. they can score!! k-state looked good against OU. i was surprised they were able to run against them effectively and score! y can t we get players like that? they have 2 pretty good qb's, banks is a burner and their running back is tough and solid! our rb's are soft!!
we'll win at least 2 of the last 4 but only b/c the defense. mainly the front 4.

Posted by: JayBr on November 3, 2009 6:14PM CST
StepnRaZor.....A lot of fans in Colorado have been raising cain about Scott not playing enough. A couple of my friends are CU alum/donors and they are not happy about how underutilized he's been in their eyes. If I remember correct, he's related to either a CU staff member or player....can't remember which.

Posted by: NishBigRed on November 3, 2009 6:14PM CST
JayBr,
I'm thinking give Scott a couple more years get Oregons' O down, eventually become the OC here. All you hear on Sports talk is how great Oregons' O is.

Posted by: JamesoN on November 3, 2009 6:15PM CST
Robka- I am glad to see someone else out there that believes we can win 3 outta 4 games. We have all been talking about that breakout game for the offense, OU may be that week where the little things finally come together, if it came together for 2 or 3 td's I honestly believe that we can win. NO special team errors, tough defense, and no bad TO's and I believe that we can win this game.

Posted by: WyHuskerFan on November 3, 2009 6:15PM CST
Driveby,
What has CU shown that causes you pause when we go to Boulder? The win against KU? That's says more about KU than the Buffs. These team is dead on its feet and the only question is, who will deliver the knockout punch?

Posted by: Robka on November 3, 2009 6:17PM CST
I don't judge the D on anything but points given up and they gave up 3 pts to Baylor. I don't care if it is Baylor.

GO BIG BLACKSHIRTS!!!

I doubt hawks gives him a release to transfer to UNL. Didn't he put restrictions on the receiver they had transfer on who he could transfer too before they would give him his release?

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 3, 2009 6:19PM CST
Jay))) No doubt they are mad.

It's a simple game. You get a a dude like Darrel Scott... you put him behind a strong Oline... and you give it to him... over and over. Play good defense behind that... and you have a good chance to win.

But Hawkins won't do that. And thats why he won't be coach much longer.

Posted by: atlhusker on November 3, 2009 6:19PM CST
jaybr-
thats what i said! our defense is only good b/c of our front 4! they stop the run, they get the sacks and they break up passes. our 2 interior lineman alone probably have just as many pass break ups as our db's do. maybe even more!

JamesoN-
at least that 07 team could score! this offense is offensive! never in all my years watching big red have i witnessed an offense that cant score more than 9 points against iowa freekin st to win the game and we almost gave Baylor the game. the bottom feeders of the big 12!
which would u rather have? a potent offense that can score at will or a defense that gets u the ball but the offense cant score?

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on November 3, 2009 6:21PM CST
Robka))) Nice! 3 out of 4?

We can win them all... for those that don't know.

Posted by: JayBr on November 3, 2009 6:25PM CST
atlhusker...I know your question is to JamesoN, but I'll take the defense. You've got a much better chance in a 9-7 game, than a 70-50 game. In the 9-7 game, it only takes one possession......

Posted by: WyHuskerFan on November 3, 2009 6:25PM CST
Hawkins has a love hate relationship with CU. They hate him but he loves his paycheck. The state is broke and alumi won't or can't pony up to send him packing. Recruits are bailing. I see CU asking to join the MWC in the near future. Maybe we get Iowa and the Big X goes back to ten teams.

Posted by: Robka on November 3, 2009 6:26PM CST
Didn't you read the whole post? I think we can "Easily" win 3 out of 4, but the fourth will take an extra ordinary effort, but yes we can win them all:)

il take the defense because you can get one break and win the game

Posted by: rluben on November 3, 2009 6:28PM CST
Our O isn't as bad as people want to make it out to be.

Sure me n step complain about scheme, i still believe we need a better power run scheme or when we go to the I formation or a lead back we should stick with it longer.

But it really has been execution that has been lacking for the most part and what has caused the biggest problems of all.

Dropped balls, missed blocks, not hitting an open receiver, things that can be cleaned up.

We can win all our remaining games if they get those things cleaned up some and just execute.

I know we can, so do our coaches and players.
They know they have beat themselves and I bet they get that fixed.

there are no moral victories at Newbraska! we're not 7-1 we're 5-3 and we lost to iowas st at home without there 2 best players. just bcuz i point out the obvious doesnt make me any less of a fan but thats just down right disturbing!
im pretty sure ark st is comparable to iowa st hell they almost beat the mighty undefeated hawkeyes and we could run and pass and score on them. we beat la lafayette 55-0! this is the same team that beat kansas st which is the leader of the divison!
whats happened to the offense since we won the sunbelt conf earlier this year?
y cant we run those plays now. all we do is dump offs and bubble screens and wr screens that dont work! i mean wats has 2-300 plays in his playbook yet he only runs like 20 a game! he's got that callahan mentality! we dont domintate we take what they give us! and we dont play to win we play not to get blown out! we need a leader on offense and bo needs to take possession of this team before it starts to unravel and another showing like the one we had last year against OU at night on national tv could be that step that propels us up or sinks us!

Posted by: drivebyposter on November 3, 2009 6:33PM CST
I love wyoming

Posted by: JayBr on November 3, 2009 6:34PM CST
rluben.....agree with you about execution, but I also agree with some of the weaknesses you've pointed out. In defense of Watson, though, I believe he likes to run those laterals and bubble screens because he doesn't trust our O-lines interior blocking as much as he trusts our TE's and WR to make key blocks on the outside. That's just my opinion, though.

Posted by: Robka on November 3, 2009 6:34PM CST
The last thing the big 12 needs is another poor fanbase. Please stay in the Big 11 Iowa.

GO BIG RED!!!

Robka,

You think Iowa fans are worse than CU's?

Posted by: rluben on November 3, 2009 6:38PM CST
An example of execution in it's simplest form and how just a tiny improvement in execution would make a difference...where scheme or the playcall has nothing to do with the big picture.

The VT game, Zak hits Niles Paul (I think it was, maybe Holt) deep on the sideline, it's a completion sure but easily could have been a TD reception if Zak had thrown a better ball and the receiver hadn't had to secure it while going out of bounds.

Hit him in stride without taking him out of bounds and he runs for a TD untouched simple.

But nope, just a little off on the throw to the outside and we settle fora fieldgoal instead.

Clean up small things in the execution and it will come together.

Posted by: Robka on November 3, 2009 6:39PM CST
althusker - Why is losing to a team 9-7 with 8 TURNOVERS disturbing? We would lose to NW Crap St. if we have 8 turnovers. It was a freak of nature, definitely not something to be disturbed about. If we play ISU 9 more times I'd bet we win all 9 because the chances of 8 turnovers happening again is about the same as winning the lottery. I was amazed by our lack of ball control, but how could I be upset about it?

GO BIG RED!!!

Posted by: BleedingRed on November 3, 2009 6:40PM CST
I sure hope that we completely open the spicket on the offense.

I don't see why we can't win this game other than not being allowed to.

Make OU play the whole field the whole game.

I would be thrilled if our first 3 passes on offense (if it takes 3) are for all the marbles. Stretch the field and make OU defend all of it.

If you don't like the local media get the hell out or deal with it like an adult. I lived in So cal and didn't bag on USC fans. If you don't like it move. I did:)

thats whats disturbing! and the fact we cant score an offensive td or put together multiple offensive td games!
screw that iowa st game. we lost we didnt get beat but we didnt score either and havent since!
what we scored like 37 points the last 3 games?thats how many points we avg per game last year! of that the offense scored 3-maybe 4 td's?

I say that to shine a positive light on the situation, because as much as we'd like to lay it on Wats and his O scheme at times.

Sometimes it really is in how a play is executed that determines if it's a big play a TD, a bust, or just a first down that keeps a drive moving.

I believe our execution will improve and the players will rise to the challenge and make the plays they are capable of making.

I know this is all obvious observations, but when you think of it in this light, then it doesn't seem so gloom and doom.

Don't be afraid to believe that our players have enough in them to get the execution cleaned up, we have good athletes who want to get it done, so maybe they will find it within themselves to rise up to the challenge.

I believe.

Posted by: BleedingRed on November 3, 2009 6:52PM CST
If we don't stretch the field against OU they are going to tee off on us and we won't have a chance.

We HAVE to make them play the entire field, including the short and deep middle.

Man I hope that we don't come out with some rediculous and conservative game plan.

Posted by: Robka on November 3, 2009 6:53PM CST
Atlhusker - How can u say" it was a fluke, but.." We didn't get 3 more points BECAUSE of the turnovers. 8 turnovers equals 16 possession swing. You can't score if don't have the ball.

GO BIG HOLD ON 2 THE BALL!!!

Posted by: rluben on November 3, 2009 6:56PM CST
I'm done stressing over what was if that's what you are asking atlhusker.

Those games are over, each new game is another chance that the real Huskers O will stand up and be heard.

Execution baby, execution.

Someone needs to take this team on his back and get the train rolling make some big plays and drag this O out of it's funk.

I think it happens this week, they put it together.

Posted by: WyHuskerFan on November 3, 2009 6:56PM CST
Robka,

I'll admit it's been awhile since I've been around Iowa fans. Wyoming played them in several bowl games and those I met reminded me of good Husker fans.

I was being serious about CU. With their financial problems and the fact they're not putting money into athletic facilities, I believe they will leave the Big XII in the near future. Denver media is downplaying it, but I see it happening. I was curious what team Husker fans would like to see come into our division.

Posted by: no nothing on November 3, 2009 6:56PM CST
If you execute a play perfectly, you have to at least consider the defenses input to the outcome. I think you have to call the right play too. A perfectly executed play at the wrong time may still come up short.

Posted by: rluben on November 3, 2009 7:08PM CST
Well yeah no nothing.

Just saying plays have been there to be made, but lack of execution has prevented them from being made.

It's got to start somewhere and execution is the thing as a player that you can control.

The rest is a whole different bag of worms.

I best see me a play action pass to a TE or FB this week and downfield not for 2 yards.

Posted by: BleedingRed on November 3, 2009 7:08PM CST
Robka,

I did not know that. That is actually pretty pathetic if you think about it.

We handed them the ball every time we got it except for our 1 score and they could only win by 2 points.

that throw by Green to Paul to the 1 yard line is that considered stretching the field, the catch and fumble by Paul is that considered stretching the field, the drop by Gillellyen (sp) is that, the drop by Chris Brooks is that? You can see a trend here. IMHO they have been streching the field just terrible at executing.

"Drop" behind the line of scrimmage, if that is what you are referring to - No, and please get rid of that play. If we run that play I hope Cody or Lee audible into a deep pass for a potential score.
The drop by Gillyen that came off the hands of the TT db - Yes, but it was not to him and it was a tough catch for him to make.
Don't remind me of the ball that was thrown right into the path of a lb who was already coming in to make a hit - No, that was 8 yards deep. If you want to run that play then post the TE and throw to him.

As I said originally, if the Huskers are going to win any or all of their remaining games, the offense has to get in gear and put points on the board. When you take the Huskers out of the Sunbelt, they may be the worst team in the country when they are in the red zone.

Virgina Tech--15 points on five (5) field goals (zero TD's)!!! Texas Tech--10 points (one TD), Iowa State--7 points (shut out 3 qtrs-one TD), Baylor--20 points (shut out 2 qtrs-two TD's by offense). Missouri (shut out 3 qtrs and one red zone TD). And overall that is an average of only 15 points per game against BCS competition. That simply will not hack it these last four gotta have games.

Fumbles, interceptions, penalties, poor play calling, poor execution or whatever. Either fix it or pray that the defense can pitch four shutouts. Win only one game and maybe you can get the 7-2 Idaho Vandals on the Blue Turf in the Humaitarian Bowl. The Idaho QB is from Nebraska so he would be excited to play against the school that didn't give him a tumble.

Hopefully Bo wasn't thinking that the Huskers could get one of the two Sunbelt bowl bids.

Posted by: JamesoN on November 3, 2009 9:00PM CST
Well at least we won the Sunbelt Conference Championship. The offense left 4 TD's on the field against ISU, 5 FG's against VT...so say 3 TD's, We left 2 Td's and gave them another in the TTU game. Thats 9 more TD's we should have had this season, little things like lack of execution are the difference between being ranked #4 and not right now.

Ugh... im watching Inside College Football... and they keep making fun of the Big 12 North.

I hope whoever wins the North just goes on to win the Big 12! That'll shut them all up

We can definetly win out, sat. will be tough, but we husker fans love tough. If the O-line can get real ugly and knock people off, this team has the horses to score.I realise I am optimistic ,but I believe we can win every game we play. This defense is a monster, and as long as they continue this trend we should be in every game if not ahead, and don't ever compare these teams with ,He-who-shalt -not-be-named,lol,these kids are fighting hard and deserve our continued support.huskersince birth, wait, those that are putting us down now, will be singing our praises before long.GOOOOOO BIGGGGGG REDDDDDDDDDD

OH and by the way.I would rather have BO saying Burkhead will return at least for the bowl game, than saying next year after the col. game..I love BO's confidence

Colorado will be NU's bowl game. The season is pretty much done. The team must be in pretty sad shape as Bo has been having, live day time, conferences explaining what is wrong with the team and what he plans on doing about the short comings.
