Burkhead could return in "couple of weeks"
Posted by: Brian Christopherson on November 16, 2009 at 11:59AM CST
Husker coach Bo Pelini said Monday that true freshman running back Rex Burkhead is "coming along good" in his rehabilitation from a foot injury that has sidelined him since the practices leading up to the Texas Tech game.

"He ran yesterday and he's progressing really well," Pelini said. "We expect to have him here in the next couple of weeks."

Pelini said he expects tight Mike McNeill to be ready to go by the Kansas State game.

The junior had four catches against Kansas, but his fourth one came at a physical cost. McNeill took a shot in the rib area early in the fourth quarter and did not return to the game.

"We expect him for this week. He was feeling a lot better yesterday," Pelini said. "Whether we practice him today or not, that's to be determined yet. We expect him to be ready to play."

BAM... Take that in the ribs and try to keep going. Has to be one of the worst injuries because when it hurts to breathe, you kinda don't wanna do that.

Posted by: Albino on November 16, 2009 12:03PM CST
BAM!

Burkhead will be back by the bowl. Maybe even by Texas. The one-two punch reemerges.

It may be time for a wildcat formation.

We're 10 games in and still trick play free...

Im not sure if Rex's return maybe that huge for DONU. D-Rob has been showing signs of running well or atleast as well as Rex did. Plus he maybe a little rusty when it come to real game experience. It will be nice to have him back as an extra tool though.

Posted by: Big Red in Big D 007 on November 16, 2009 12:20PM CST
As I posted a few weeks ago he will be ready for the CU game however I think we should wait till the big 12 game to get him in. Just more time to heal.

Posted by: Viking Husker on November 16, 2009 12:31PM CST
Definately want to get him in a couple games so he isn't rusty for a bowl game.

IMO, Rex had a bit quicker burst than Trey. Hit the hole faster. That may have flipped with the time off, but I still see Rex having a bigger upside than Trey at this point in their development.

Posted by: Albino on November 16, 2009 12:47PM CST
In the KU game, Trey had a large hole to his right but kept moving forward into the pile. Helu or Rex would have veered off into a big game.

"Run to daylight" seems to be a subtle and elusive concept (and not just for Robinson).

Correction to previous post: 'game' was intended to be 'gain'. Sorry.

Posted by: Denver Bob on November 16, 2009 12:52PM CST
Rex is a special young back. If NU beats KSU, I'd save him for a Texas surprise package. I'd hate to see him reinjured against CU, particularly if the title shot is in the bag after this Saturday.

Any truth to the rumor Hawkins is done at Colorado, he won't even coach the Nebraska game?

Posted by: Denver Bob on November 16, 2009 12:58PM CST
Corky...

Nope, no news like that in Denver today.

Posted by: Outside The Box on November 16, 2009 12:59PM CST
Some would argue Hawkins hasn't coached all of their games this year.

Posted by: TommyOC on November 16, 2009 12:59PM CST
Albino - That was a big hole Tray missed. Better vision to make that cutback and he goes for big yards. He's a banger type back and would probably make a good FB considering. I like him, but Rex might have hit that hole and made 15-20 out of it.

Posted by: Average Joseph on November 16, 2009 12:59PM CST
Its true, Burkhead is and will be a better back in the future, he has a raw talent and a blue collar mentality....I'm just hoping that he's not rusty. They have each played 4 games each. Rex has 23 carries for 118 yards (5.1 avg) and D-Rob has 38 carries for 159 yds (4.2 avg). Not much of a drop off.

Posted by: Viking Husker on November 16, 2009 1:00PM CST
Rex is from Texas. We play him as a secret weapon, maybe mix in a little Green when we upset Texas in the title game, that could be huge for recruiting.

Posted by: HuskerzFL on November 16, 2009 1:01PM CST
I want Hawk to stay.

Posted by: BigAppleHusker on November 16, 2009 1:02PM CST
Man Say what you want but our offense went South the Week RexB went down. We had 2 straight losses @ home as soon as he was injured and not in the game.

I sure hope he is back ASAP. DTrey is good but not as quick and developed as RexB.

Posted by: TommyOC on November 16, 2009 1:02PM CST
We have a game Saturday first Viking. I'm with you though. I don't think Ksucks is gonna be as hard as some are making it out to be. Too one dimentional. Stop Thomas and Banks and it's gonna be a long day for them. I don't see those two guys being as good as Murry, Brown, and Broyles. Just saying.

Posted by: HuskerInCO on November 16, 2009 1:03PM CST
No news out here in Denver about Hawkins being fired.

Posted by: Outside The Box on November 16, 2009 1:04PM CST
I'm hoping Hawk has another kid to plug in at QB.

Posted by: Ray in Bellevue on November 16, 2009 1:11PM CST
I wish we knew exactly what kind of foot injury Burkhead sustained because of the likelihood of recurrent symptoms. Was it a stress fracture of a metatarsal, for example? But, of course, if we knew, it would be something else to worry about, so maybe it's better this way. He would definitely be a big plus for the offense, if he can get on the field soon, with Helu hurting. I would guess we would see him for the bowl game, for sure.

Posted by: Inbread on November 16, 2009 1:14PM CST
I think CU has money issues, and they cannot afford to fire Hawk. That is unless some privete "donor" ponies up the cash for his buyout, or someone can convince him to quit. I was thinking I read that from one of the papers in Colorado, but am not sure.

Posted by: Average Joseph on November 16, 2009 1:17PM CST
Apple,

You really can't blame those losses on not having Burkhead.......how about 8 turnovers against the Clones??? The offense looked better against the Jaybirdies and Rex wasn't there. Plus don't forget Rex was helping us win the Sun Belt Championship not the Big 12. I'm not saying that he isn't an asset but I think we're just keeping are heads above water w/out him. Just one mans opinion.

Posted by: Albino on November 16, 2009 1:17PM CST
Hawkins on Hawkins: "Everybody wants to win more games, but I think in terms of helping get this place back on track after what it went through, we've had to take on a number of tasks and done a great job with that."

Think about this: get a commitment from Aaron Green out of San Antonio and have Burk and Green along with CG in 2011. Think his brother is a DB for us now.

Posted by: Exiled_in_VT on November 16, 2009 1:19PM CST
Bob Stoops to Notre Dame is the best rumor going out there today. If any OU fans are trying to run him off just because this season's been disappointing, they're morons.

Posted by: Inbread on November 16, 2009 1:22PM CST
Here, I found a decent article from a complete jackarse. The article is pretty accurate and fair (towards CU AND Hawk) considering the boob that wrote it.

Inbread,

CU has money issues beyond buying out Hawk--they're not paying him that much and can't afford to pay the next guy any more. Who would want to come to CU and coach that mess for less money than they're already making? They'd need to bring in some small-time guy looking to make a name for himself...

Posted by: HuskerzFL on November 16, 2009 1:32PM CST
That's the first I have heard the Stoops going to ND rumor.

Posted by: PT Husker on November 16, 2009 1:33PM CST
Best rumor i have heard is that Kstate has a chance this weekend.

Posted by: joe t on November 16, 2009 1:34PM CST
Hawkins is staying for another year. That's a good thing, except if he pulls the upset on us...

Lots of love for Rex I see. I still hold out that Robinson will be a better back over their careers.

The wildcat formation? You mean the unimaginative direct snap to an RB? Why is it that only announcers and the average fan get excited over it... Defensive coordinators don't really give a crap. 95% of the time is just a running play. Wow, not that big of a deal.

Posted by: Inbread on November 16, 2009 1:36PM CST
Exiled, I agree. However if they had fired Hawk last year, they could have had the coach from Ball State. Instead he went to San Diego State. There are a bunch of coaches out there who are or should be better then Hawk, for comparative dollars. Although, I like having Hawk there, cause he makes me laugh and doesn't win very much.

Posted by: NishBigRed on November 16, 2009 1:39PM CST
Not that it matters much to you guys, but UNLV just fired their coach.

Posted by: HuskerzFL on November 16, 2009 1:40PM CST
Like I said before, I want Hawk to stay just like I wanted Grimace to stay at KSU.

Posted by: Viking Husker on November 16, 2009 1:47PM CST
Tommy,
I agree with the one game at a time mentality, when you're involved directly with the team. If I'm a coach, I don't even mention CU, let alone Texas.

Didn't we lose a RB recruit to ND? If Charlie goes away, any chance we get that kid back?

Posted by: TommyOC on November 16, 2009 1:57PM CST
Viking, well he's probably committed to Notre Dame because he's thinking Charlie will be leaving. lol

Posted by: 4LoJoe on November 16, 2009 2:07PM CST
I think Giovanni Bernard is the RB. Better give him a call...

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on November 16, 2009 2:14PM CST
This is good! Getting people back from injuries at the end of the season! That'll help. The only question I have is will they be ready to go full speed in a couple of weeks?

Posted by: rluben on November 16, 2009 2:35PM CST
I doubt Bo would let him go if Rex and the Trainers or the Doc hadn't convinced Bo he was good to go.

Bo wouldn't risk the kids future on one game, not a chance.

Posted by: rluben on November 16, 2009 2:39PM CST
I have a feeling that Rex is one of those tough guys that can fool a staff into thinking he's 100% when he isn't though...can't keep heart n desire off the field sometimes even when they should be letting themselves heal up 100%.

Posted by: Tice on November 16, 2009 4:07PM CST
Beat UT and OU in the same year we lose to ISU...what a maaaaaaad world this would be!!!

Posted by: Albino on November 16, 2009 4:41PM CST
joe t,

Never seen any unexpected passing or option combos from the wildcat, huh? Too bad, UR missing half the fun!

A healthy Burkhead would be a huge benefit. None of the other reserve backs possess his abilities. He has great running-back vision, hits the holes fast, great cuts and explodes into contact. Again, none of the other reserve running backs are close to his skill level.

Posted by: BlackshirtBeado on November 17, 2009 1:34AM CST
Why on gods good green earth would anyone EVER want to commit to Notre "golden domers Dame. I mean, my god. Talk about over hyped irrelevence.
