Brief injury updates
Posted by: Steve Sipple on September 5, 2010 at 12:30PM CST

Nebraska junior right tackle Marcel Jones, projected as the starter, sat out Saturday night with a sore back, according to Husker head coach Bo Pelini.

"He was available to play, but we didn't want to use him unless we had to," the coach said.

Senior D.J. Jones started in Marcel's place, and redshirt freshman Jeremiah Sirles saw time at RT in addition to starting at LT.

Starting defensive end Cameron Meredith left the game with two minutes left in the first half and didn't return. Pelini indicated Meredith's injury might not be serious. "He's OK," the coach said.

Husker defensive coordinator Carl Pelini shed a little light on starting linebacker Will Compton's foot injury, which occurred Thursday in practice and has the sophomore sidelined indefinitely.

"It really is just a healing process, and it's kind of a wide, wide range of time," Carl said when asked about the timetable for Compton's return.

(bam) Beat Idaho!

Posted by: Blackshirtsdef on September 5, 2010 12:37PM CST
Hopeful for quick healing for everyone...

I just listened to the postgame stuff and have to agree about the D.....whats missing, in my opinion, is leadership...not coaching or play calling.....it's the "senior" presence on the field that keeps guys in check..

Just a thought

What a Game!

Posted by: Fitzy on September 5, 2010 12:42PM CST
I am hoping that Compton turned an ankle and is sore... I hope they are sandbagging and he will be back in practice and ready to go next week... or at least by Washington.

I thought the O-line looked better late in the game with whoever they had in... they seemed more impressive than the group that started. Of course that could have been conditioning and the fact that WKU was tired and beat up by that time...

Idaho will provide a little better competition and a better gauge. It will also be nice that the coaches will have some film to look at of Idaho's game this week to go off of for game planning and personnel.

The coaches reaction leads me 2 believe CM had a shoulder stinger, so he should b available 4 Idaho, he was not holding in like a dislocation.

GO BIG GET WELL SOON BOYZ!!!

Posted by: PT Husker on September 5, 2010 1:33PM CST
Injuries are a part of the game. Backups need to prepare like they are starters. Maybe did not happen in the young backers. Especially Comptons replacement. Not sure but it sounds like Whaley was not ready. His bad if that is the case.

Heal up boys.

Posted by: Robka on September 5, 2010 1:53PM CST
Pt give Whaley a little break since all the mental and physical practice is still not "I'm the starter" game experience. He will get better quickly or some one else will step up.

GO BIG BLACKSHIRTS!!!

Does anyone know if Washington played on Special Teams as Bo said he would?

Posted by: PT Husker on September 5, 2010 2:33PM CST
Texas Tech on ESPN.

Posted by: NishBigRed on September 5, 2010 2:50PM CST
Afternoon,
So everyone happy with the Huskers performance last night.
I only got to see the end of the 3rd and 4th quarter.

Plus it was in a crowed bar so I didn't really get to see the game as I would prefer.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on September 5, 2010 2:50PM CST
I actually thought Whaley played pretty well considering. David got the stats but Bo did say David made lots of mistakes. Good to hear the injury report appear to be minimal.

Martinez is fun to watch, but I thought Green's ball had more zip and accuracy than T-Marts. I think too, we need to hand off the ball more often to our backs, though with the Zone Option, the defense dictates whether you keep or hand the ball off. I would like to see how Martinez handles a Big 12 style blitz

It's just a first game, so you don't run everything in your playbook. The 2 minuet drill in the 2nd quarter was not stellar, so that is something to work on. We should know more about our QB's Saturday as we have a little tougher competition in Idaho.

Over all, we had more than 500 years total offense, put up 49, so a nice beginning.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on September 5, 2010 2:55PM CST
Nish, it was about what you would expect of first game. The defense had it's moments but let WKU run the ball in the 3rd quarter, so some work needs to be done. Bo was not happy with his defense, said the Coaches need to do a better job.

It's clear to me that by starting T-Mart and bringing in Green 2nd, that Watson is not going to play it safe. Yes, a QB needs to be game manager, but he also needs to be a playmaker, and it appears we now have that.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on September 5, 2010 2:59PM CST
Sounds like Compton will be back, I hope sooner than later, but want him to be 100%.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on September 5, 2010 3:00PM CST
Our kick return game looks to be very good. Both Marlowe and Paul did a good job.

Posted by: NishBigRed on September 5, 2010 3:02PM CST
Thanks Islander,
Like I said I watched it in a crowed it bar and really couldn't get a feel.

Couldn't tell if the O line was dominating.
I did see Green throw a nice TD ball in the third it had a nice touch and zip.

One think about Bo' defenses they always improve throughout the season.

The talent over all seems to be much better.

Wow a Redsrt Fresh starting at QB, I never thought I would see the day.

Posted by: Islander/Husker on September 5, 2010 3:27PM CST
Our offense is changing, and the talent at QB is rising, there will be some new guys coming in next year. Off course in first game you are not going to run your whole playbook. I expect will see see the Wildcat down the road for example, but yesterday it was not used. We did show big play capability in both the run and passing game. It is unusual to see the 1st string QB of last year being the 3 string so far this year. But that could change. Lee is a competitor and there is no quit in him. He did do nicely in mop up though.

Posted by: Fitzy on September 5, 2010 3:27PM CST
I think Taylor will be the main guy, but you will still see plenty of Cody Green as he is probably a little better with the arm at least at this point. Both will play a lot. Cody will need to be ready just as Zac will need to be ready in case of injury or Taylor simply needing a breather from running so much, just like a running back needs a breather.

Posted by: Fitzy on September 5, 2010 3:29PM CST
There is so much more that this offense can do with the weapons they have. They did not show that much yesterday. You want to keep as much of the offense in the bag as you can for Washington. They will have by far the best coaching and athletes we will see in the non-conference.

Posted by: PT Husker on September 5, 2010 3:46PM CST
It was good to see the backups play well in the 4th.

Also I was somewhat surprised to see Rodriguiz play. so much for his redshirt.

Posted by: PT Husker on September 5, 2010 4:16PM CST
Corn, So you want 12 to 15 play drives rather than 3 or 4 play drives?

As the teams improve that will happen. Pretty good average per carry.

Posted by: TruBlueRed on September 5, 2010 4:30PM CST
Got to agree with PT, that is a pretty good APC for both backs. I doubt if Pelini or the running backs coach is dissatisfied with the running backs production. As far as number of carries if your QB is ripping off 46 yard runs the backs aren't going to get as many carries. If defenses start keying on QB the backs will get more carries......the benefits of a multiple offense and a dual threat QB. It ain't the old option 3 yds and a cloud of dust offense, but I guarantee it will give defensive coordinators nightmares :)

Posted by: PT Husker on September 5, 2010 4:32PM CST
Any coach worth his salt will see the films and after he recovers from fainting, try to takeaway, or at least control, Martinez.

That will open up the running back option in the zone read. I think those are called multiple options available to the QB.

Posted by: PT Husker on September 5, 2010 4:44PM CST
Assuming he has won this job my question about T Mart is durability. As the defenders become bigger, stronger, and faster he is going to get hit. Hard. How will he hold up?

Posted by: PT Husker on September 5, 2010 4:49PM CST
Corn, we agree on that for sure. No doubt they will be our biggest challenge of the season. They also claim to have a very physical defense with a secondary as good or better than ours.

IMO that game comes down to field position. And turnovers.

Alex will be huge. Both punting and Kicking.

Posted by: PT Husker on September 5, 2010 4:57PM CST
But, I look ahead. We have a few games to play before that. I will wait, not very patiently, but I will wait.

Posted by: WyHuskerFan on September 5, 2010 5:29PM CST
I must admit I was a little disappointed in our D play. Guess I expected them to pickup right where they left off last December. Too big an expectation I know, but hey, it's WKU. I expected to be in their backfield all night and watch the QB running for his life. He looked way to comfortable in the second half as the game slowed down for him.

The kid from North Platte better look out next week. I'm sure Carl will have them breathing fire by then.

GBR!

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on September 5, 2010 6:06PM CST
Our D will be get better. Lots of young guys. We have time to get it fixed.

But I just don't see our D being as good this year. We won't be able to replace all those amazing plays Suh made.

Posted by: The StepnRaZor on September 5, 2010 6:26PM CST
Feels good to get some explosive QB play. It's been a while.

Posted by: Husker_Heat on September 5, 2010 6:31PM CST
hey, the rodent is back!

Posted by: BleedingRed on September 5, 2010 6:33PM CST
I thought that as critical as Bo was of the defense, he may have been a little kind...far too many break downs in every area. One of the db's needs to step up his game BIG TIME.

The best thing I saw all night was trade mark hitting a receiver after going through his reads.

I sure do hope there is some substantial improvement next week and going forward.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on September 5, 2010 6:39PM CST
Idaho's usually at the bottom of thw WAC. This should be another easy win.

Im looking for a more dominating game from us though.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on September 5, 2010 6:43PM CST
BleedingRed:

I think part of the defenses problems were due to the fact that we really had no clue what they were going to run. They had a new Head Coach who was coaching his first game. We didn't have a clue what his offensive scheme would be. So we just had to kind of guess what they were going to do.

Is this an excuse? No, but I think it may have contributed a little to the defenses problems. I also think us starting a few new players and guys getting their first ever game experience could have hindered us a little.

I think we'll see some big improvements in the next game.

Posted by: RyvenVi on September 5, 2010 6:47PM CST
just curious..but where was chyrinski gullian (no clue how to spell his name) today? i saw him on the sidelines with no pads on?

Posted by: nino_43 on September 5, 2010 6:49PM CST
I think we had best play them 1 game at a time! Okie-Lite looked pretty damn impressive yesterday! Mizzou s D looked pretty good in their game. Im telling u folks, once we get into Big 12 play, its either Get Down! or Lay Down! My $ says we Get Down! but Im a little biased. I didnt get to watch the game. I had to listen to it on Huskers.com. Black Shirts, I think those Boys have been reading their own news paper articles too much! The game as a whole, about what I expected. Dr. Tom said a team makes the most growth from game 1 to game 2.

Posted by: Gofor2 on September 5, 2010 6:49PM CST
One of the major things that I saw yesterday was the presence of TMart.

Just that extra focus and confidence I have not seen since Frost/Tommy/Crouch days.

He seemed fearless of making a mistake, Memorial stadium packed crowd, contact and being the leader. It was natural. Without the distraction and worry about failure he seemed able to be above each play and execute what he was given.

One play, where he was in the shotgun and the RB passed in front of him with the option to hand off or keep, stood out for me. His eyes were reading that D intently and he waited until the last second to make a decision. It was the right one and he went through the line in a flash for a big gain.

He explodes when he's made his decision and takes off fearlessly with abandon.

I flashed on some of the great option QB's like Lott, Turner, Tommy, J. C., who had this magic.

Also, his second touch where there was a lot of traffic near the end zone. He intuitively had the presence of mind to make contact, then back off, evade and was in. Shades of Tommy's Fiesta bowl run through most of the Florida D.

As TO would say "he's a difference maker," and there's no holding him back.

nino_43:

OSU looked good, but that's against WSU... who hasn't had a winnning season since 2003.

Washington State might possibly be worse than WKU.

Posted by: Silicon Valley Husker on September 5, 2010 6:55PM CST
I would like to see the RBs get a few more carries. Helu and Burkhead had some nice yards on plays but not a ton of touches. Of course, I think 5 or 6 I backs had carries.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on September 5, 2010 6:56PM CST
Don't take the bait guys just type around him.

Posted by: Gofor2 on September 5, 2010 6:59PM CST
Of course the argument that he was facing the "Hilltoppers" is valid.

But he faced the Blackshirts to crawl out of oblivion and take the start.

I suspect some of Bo's surliness in fall camp was having this redshirt freshmen shred his D. A player like this is almost unstoppable, Tebow like, but TMart has some qualities of evasion and speed Tebow didn't.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on September 5, 2010 6:59PM CST
Silicon Valley Husker:

I think they were trying to evaluate as many players as they could against another opponent.

I think the coaches were pretty confident that our talent and work rate alone would beat these guys.

Posted by: Gofor2 on September 5, 2010 7:04PM CST
As far as the D, I'm not worried. I saw the hitting and intensity and playmakers. They just have to jell.

Bo and Carl will have great D's, and some that are close to greatness. Nothing else. They'll figure it out, just like figuring out the new O with TMART.

Posted by: nino_43 on September 5, 2010 7:07PM CST
Huskersincebirth2. thanks for trying to put my mind at ease. I always worry when I see any of our future opponents doing good. That RB from Okie-lite is the real deal! he was hurt last yr, but he tore it up the year before i think. like i said i didnt get to watch the game, i just had to listen to WKUs RB gash us for 140 yds. sounds like we need to pick up our run D a little bit. Go Blackshirts!

Really didn't like this article "Curt McKeever: Zac Lee the odd man out", about one of our kids who plays his heart out for NU. Unnecessary in my view.

Posted by: Silicon Valley Husker on September 5, 2010 7:16PM CST
I'm not worried or impressed too much either way. WKU is not OU. Martinez obviously has some skills. Let's hope we can do the same against B12 teams.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on September 5, 2010 7:19PM CST
nino_43:

Hunter is a good back, but we stopped Thomas (KSU's RB) last year and I think he's way better than Hunter.

Besides, by the time OSU plays us we'll fix our defense to where no one will be able to rush against us very well, and OSU will be passing like Texas Tech. They'll be tough, but nothing we can't handle. And if the offense can sustain drives and take forever to score points the defense will be well rested.

I think one reason the defense did horribly last night was the fact that our offense was scoring to quickly (did I just say that?!) lol

The defense wasn't able to catch their breath.

Posted by: Silicon Valley Husker on September 5, 2010 7:20PM CST
Didn't see the KU game but it seems clear that Gill did better than Rich Rod in his first game at MU....particularly with all of the lost talent.

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on September 5, 2010 7:24PM CST
Yea. Talked to a couple of KU fans yesterday. They are upset about the offense, but they understand they lost almost all the talent on the offense. They did say that the defense is light years ahead of where it was when Mangino was HC there though. They see alot of promise with Gill.

Posted by: Gofor2 on September 5, 2010 7:33PM CST
Silly
I agree, he hasn't proved it yet where it matters. But he will or I'm just a burned out, koolaide drinking, Husker Geezer that's lost it, and you all are to polite to tell me. But if I'm right, well great things are in store for the Huskers. Trust me on this one, I'm right.

Turner has to start from scratch and if the administration sticks with him, he'll be fine. The fans will be hurling some pretty rude stuff at him, but Turner's a tough one.

How many days did you camp in my backyard?

The Korean kid, Seung Hoon Choi, from Lincoln Christian, was mentioned in the OWH for his contributions on the O-line yesterday. Has anyone ever heard of this guy? I don't ever remember seeing his name in the stories about offensive line depth.

When's the LITR open? Maybe I'll take up golf again. Before, I was to focused on drinking beer and screwing around when I played. Actually got kicked out of a CC for not wearing a shirt. Jeez, what's that all about, can I guy get some rays while he's playing? Is cheating allowed?

Posted by: Huskersincebirth2 on September 5, 2010 7:42PM CST
So who wants to take bets on how many plays it will take the offense to score on their first drive against Idaho??

Posted by: Gofor2 on September 5, 2010 7:43PM CST
Boise State looses tomorrow.

We need major improvements to the defense. The play of the safeties is best with Gomes and PJ. The defensive line could not shake their blocks and looked to be out of place when the ball was snapped. The best play of the defense came from The defensive end starters. Linebackers need more training. Lots of missed tackles all around.

Posted by: Miami Beach Husker on September 5, 2010 8:05PM CST

I know Bo did not sleep well last night.

Bo and Carl probably put in 16 hours today coming up with a plan.

They now know the situation at LB, and our limations.

Now is the time E Hagg, A Cassidy, D Gomes, and even A Green can be used creatively.

Has there been any traction to moving L Washington back to Mike? He is big, athletic, though rusty, knows the defense and Bo's expections. Might fill the middle for us down the line.

We need to have heavy LB package, a more physical LB option for K-State, and possibly UT.

Bo is probably laying out a plan right now. No time for sleep. NU has its first real shot at being a national contender.

Bo knows.

Have faith.

It will be interesting to see how this season plays out. It was nice to see some explosive plays for once, but the run defense was, quite literally, terrible. I also expected a bit more then 49 points from our offense. The Hilltoppers, on paper, were the worst team we have played in the last 2 years or so - 49 points seems a little light. The good news is it is early in the year, and hopefully the coaches can get the defense fixed in time for k state and texas, because I can assure you they will try to run it down our throats.

PS - I still dont like watson's play calling whatsoever. Someday soon, he will head elsewhere and be a head coach at a 1AA school

Posted by: big red 1 on September 5, 2010 8:43PM CST
The defence will be firing on all 10 cylinders this Saturday.I don't think they played real bad we just need to do a little tweaking. The one good thing I liked was watching the defense swarm to the ball.
Excellent teams do this(I.E 95 blackshirts, and the steel curtain). We will be fine.
The team that needs to worry in the big 12 is Texas. Watched some and saw the highlights. Not impressed. There secondary being better than ours? Don't think so.
Go big D, Getter Done.

Posted by: ChadMO on September 5, 2010 8:52PM CST
Congrats Husker friends on a comfortable start. Now after having seen what the rest of the Big 12 did, where do you rank the Huskers today? Still easy frontrunners or might need to study it further to see how close it wil be?

Are you surprised by Colorado and KSU?

Posted by: big red 1 on September 5, 2010 8:59PM CST
Chadmo: KSU no but Colorado yes. Maybe they figured out that they had better play good or they will have no coach.
Don't mean that as a jab just an observation.
Good win for MO
I still pick us to win the big 12 North.

Posted by: ChadMO on September 5, 2010 9:02PM CST
And if this weekend changes not your thoughts on the north, did you learn anything about the NU pecking order vs the south?

I really expected more out of TX and OU. Am I crazy to think there's a chance at some parity in the conference this year?

Posted by: big red 1 on September 5, 2010 9:04PM CST
ChadMO;Texas did not look impressive and neither did Oklahoma.Oklahoma State looked good though.
Steve I still think you have Oklahoma rated too high. LOL

I wish your game was televised, I want to see some clips of the D bringing it. Still haven't seen anything on ESPN...

MU D came to play in the second half of our game, it was kinda exciting. Fun to have some hope on a fresh year.

And BR1, that kid from OSU is ridiculous. No way he can keep up that pace, though.

I love you too. I love the way you can pull a heart from someone’s chest, take it apart and put it back together, like a rebuilt Chevy.

Step,
It’s good to have you back. Although Trash kept some of us abreast of the lurking and goings on in his backyard where you was camped out
Said it was like when Cousin Eddie came to visit in National Lampoon’s Vacation except you didn’t have an RV.
Although Trash did add, it was amazing what you did with that old refrigerator box. Said you fixed it up real nice.

Like Osborne, while he was coaching all those years, I think Pelini actually helps with the imparting of perspective to the scribes facing him. Just in a different way. Scribes, who are also not gleefully wanting to ask him something that’ll set him off. Not saying Nebraska writers are “pliable,” but I think you can say a lot of them are “team players.” And, rightfully they should be…
He’s at a level of fortitude and common sense, backed up by all that intensity, to the extent that media peeps are simply learning to adjust, with the framing of questions they’ll have self filtered, before they throw it out, to him. At least, until the Texas game.
In other words, I think he can clearly answer tough questions, based on what happend, as long as he doesn’t sniff out something the questioner is underlying, or, leading him to say. He doesn’t go crazy, he doesn’t slap his head, he quickly questions the validity of the question. That actually happens a lot, except coaches try to be polite about it, until the pressure forces something out.
Yeah, he’s animated and he’s intense enough to fry an egg. He’s also pretty consistent with his approach to questions. He’s just not trying to play the smooth, political “statesman” game.
Not at 42, anyway.

Ok, that's better.
Sorry.

Step, you see that goofball always trying to get goofballs to join his goofball ban da BAM campaign?

He's pretty darn obsessed with it , the BAM rules his world...owned by the BAM!!

Kinda sad really.

lol Nish.

Hey tell Ginger I wasn't ignoring here i left before I read her comment.

What's one of linebackers doing in the 3 point in your avatar?

Posted by: rluben on September 6, 2010 12:13AM CST
"one of OUR lineslackers (linebackers)" it should have read.

Posted by: NishBigRed on September 6, 2010 12:15AM CST
You know I'm against the Bam, I say just let the Bam go.

It was great in the 80s.

No problem regarding Ginger.
We had a busy week getting her first engagement going regarding the Charity she is running.

We will be hosting the first annual Music For Hope Poker Run.

We did a pre-run yesterday resulting in me missing most of the game.
Man oh Man what a boy will do for his GF

That's cool, sometimes ya gotta make sacrifices.

I'm a random BAMer...especially now that I know it pisses a few folks off.

Anytime I want to get on some goofballs nerve all I have to do is BAM?

Crap, If I knew that before, it could have been like Christmas all day every day.

I'll never BAM a first post, that's so yesterday.

Nope I'll just RAM da BAM randomly, because I can.

I do miss the days of trying to time the 100 post or 200.

Not really.

So did you catch the game yesterday in WA?
Do you go somewhere or dish out PPV and watch it at home

Posted by: 3&OUT on September 6, 2010 12:36AM CST
Just got back from Lincoln and I feel like I need to express a couple thoughts about the game yesterday.

1. T-Mart can run, he needs to look the defense away from his intended receiver, and he needs some work in the 2 minute offense.

2. The defensive coaches need to get the calls in quicker so that the front 7 are not trying to get into position when the ball is getting snapped. It happened too many times and it almost cost them a long touchdown run had it not been for Gomes.

3. Offensive line looked good.

4. Zac is a classy kid, when he got his chance he came in took what the defense gave him and moved the ball.

5. Not sure why we were throwing the ball with 3:00 left in the game?

Overall, we won easily but there is some work to be done. GBR

Posted by: NishBigRed on September 6, 2010 12:56AM CST
Thanks 3&Out,
I missed most of the game.

What is surprising is one of the W KY kids ran for the most yards of his college career.

That means W KY was able to run on the defense.
YIKES

Posted by: Uncle Fester on September 6, 2010 3:57AM CST
Did I miss something, or have they not handed out the black shirts yet? And if they didn't, is it right for Mr. Sipple or anyone else to refer to this season's defense as the blackshirts?

Maybe I'm being picky or something, but until they wear the blackshirts, how and why should anyone else call them blackshirts?

Posted by: Drinkin' Wit' Terrell Farley on September 6, 2010 4:42AM CST
I just realized Taylor Martinez is from the same school as Vontaze Burfict.

I wonder why they never made the effort to recruit him? ....or maybe they were rebuffed?

Posted by: drivebyposter on September 6, 2010 7:09AM CST
Espn Blooooger on Tmart.

On how hard he had to work to hone his quarterback skills to get to where he is now:

“I don’t think I had to work very hard to get to this point. I don’t know. I’ve had the ability to throw the ball since high school and have always been able to throw really well.”

On his first run that went for a touchdown

“At my last high school, the first time I carried the ball I scored a touchdown. And then right when I came here I was hoping I was going to do the same thing. I was hoping to score a touchdown for Nebraska and as it happened, I just ran.”

Perhaps "Imart" works as well

Posted by: Inbread on September 6, 2010 9:16AM CST
not everyone agrees with you no nothing. You say EVERYONE in the state sees them as blackshirts. Not True. anyone who gives that type of yardage and running holes to freaking western kentucky is NOT under any circumstances a blackshirt IMO. I tend to agree with Bo on this, not you.

Posted by: rattenkriegplatte on September 6, 2010 9:52AM CST
Martinez looks faaasssstttt, not just on TV even, dude decides to hit it and is gone. Kid is going to give people fits. Green looked calm and confident and still has a rifle for an arm. Lee, props dude. Is it just me or did McKeever's last two articles blow.

Posted by: rattenkriegplatte on September 6, 2010 9:59AM CST
I didn't think the defense looked that bad for a first game. You loose your number one linebacker to graduation and your other top two linebackers get hurt tough to cover those losses on short notice. Lack of concentration in the later part of the game hurt us. Overall, I thought defense was sound for the first game, as a unit better than last years first game. WKU will win some games this year, was very impressed with Taggert, that man had a team on a 20 loss streak competing and that means something. Hats off to that man.

Posted by: pistolbc on September 6, 2010 10:10AM CST
No nothing, the people who dissed the blackshirt tadition were Kevin Cosgrove and Bill Callahan when they allowed the players to keep wearing them after weekly pathetic performances. They even turned on Zach Bowman when he volunteered to give his up after the team gave up almost 700 yards to mighty Ball State.

Bo is doing exactly the right thing making them earn them. Being a blackshirt should never be something that is just handed to you. It has to be earned.

No the whole state does not agree with you. In fact you are in the minority.

Posted by: rattenkriegplatte on September 6, 2010 10:12AM CST
Who's Bill Callahan and Kevin Cosgrove?

Posted by: rattenkriegplatte on September 6, 2010 10:16AM CST
Stat that had me laughing
Newton-18 carries 61 yards.
Johnson-15 carries 63 yards.
Whittaker-9 carries 51 yards

42 carries 175 yards 4.17 yds per carry not bad if you're playing Alabama oh wait they were playing Rice. The 102 ranked rushing defense in 2009. Here's to guessing Texas leaves the running game soon. Heck Rice made an improvement from last year they gave up 11 fewer yards to Texas than they averaged last year. Looks like it could be a long year for GG.

Posted by: rattenkriegplatte on September 6, 2010 10:22AM CST
Okielite looked impressive but lets be honest, it was Wazzou and frankly Wazzou hasn't been back to average since Ryan Leaf was there. That game showed us not much other than Wazzou still can't tackle, which was a known commodity going into the game.

Posted by: fleaflicker on September 6, 2010 10:32AM CST
I remember last season when we lost players on defense.....Coach Bo and Carl expect other players to step up...it will happen this year too.
I can imagine the upside down grins from the Big XII coaches when they look at the replay of our game. Martinez, (plus great QB depth) has them scratching their heads on how to stop us.
One game at a time but it's hard not to be damn optimistic about this season.

GBR!!

Posted by: 3&OUT on September 6, 2010 10:37AM CST
The late calls from the bench on defense concerned me and it caused the guys up front to lose leverage when they ran right at us beacuse they were not always in their 3 pt. stance. A big problem when we face a big backfield like Texas has. Sideline to sideline they didn't give up much yardage but there were holes up the middle on quick openers and counters.

oNe Nebraska, GBR!

I agree flea, I'll start worrying about the D if they are playing like that 3-4 weeks from now.

They will be fine, they have some kinks to work out but I suspect they'll get it done sooner than later.

Good thing is we might just score some dang point this year. I believe that they do have the ability to pound it and control the clock if that's what they feel they NEED to do in a certain situation or if the D needs a little break.

Lull the opponent to sleep and boom....or just boom, whichever suits their fancy.

Posted by: rattenkriegplatte on September 6, 2010 10:45AM CST
Rluben - looked more like kachow instead of a boom

Posted by: rluben on September 6, 2010 10:45AM CST
Could be that Whaley was having some difficulty with the signals.

I'd guess he knows them as well as the starter, but ya never know...maybe that's part of what makes him a backup at this point in time when Compton isn't sidelined with an injury. Might be still learning all the calls and defensive alignments or being in the right spot all the time.

rluben,

You callin me a goofball?! Be nice now. If I've got Nish on my side of the Ban the Bam drive, then you're callen Nish a goofball too....and if yer doing that, well then thems fightn words.

Just kiddin.

Nish said it best : it was OK in the 80's...but so was a Flock of Seagulls. But since then, we've all moved on to better things....

If we can just get Stepn to join our fight, then we've got it made.

Ban the Bam! Put down the pipe and gain control of your life. Dont fall back to the lame opening to your take.

We're all soooo much better that that ( intellectually).

We definitely have some weapons on the offensive side of the ball, T-Mart, Helu, Burkhead, Paul, Kinnie (needs to put the ball away when he runs though). The offensive line gave the quarterbacks time when threw the ball and opened some holes. Team speed is much better than a few years ago. Liked what I saw on the offensive side of the ball, just need to make that next step up on the defensive side of the ball. They looked confused at times, maybe it was because they weren't sure what WKU was going to run since they had a new coach. GBR!

Posted by: rattenkriegplatte on September 6, 2010 10:52AM CST
I don't think that anyone here seriously doubts that this defense will improve from game to game. Everyone will see the film see the mistakes and start to eliminate them. I don't care who you play first game always has mental mistakes. I was impressed with just how athletic we looked on D. Yeah we blew some assignments but four years ago we were getting blasted and told our D was to slow. Did they make mistakes yeah but did anyone think we looked slow. Once the defense gels a bit more we should be downright nasty.

Posted by: HuzkerMunky on September 6, 2010 10:53AM CST
Don't forget Green, from what I saw yesterday he will be able to pick apart most secondaries and he can still run.

I didn't like seeing Meridith go down, still want to know how he is

Posted by: 3&OUT on September 6, 2010 10:56AM CST
Only had the one sack but got close several other times. I thought Crick was going to rip their QB in half on one hit. Nailed him right in the chest so the ref couldn't even call contact to the helmet. The only contact to the helmet was the back of his head hitting the ground. There were a lot of gang tackles another by product of the teams speed. GBR!

Posted by: rluben on September 6, 2010 10:58AM CST
Nish, I left before you asked that question last night.

I watched the game at a Husker watch site here in WA with a buddy I went to junior High with back in Lincoln. He lives here too, ran into him at a watch site back in '93 watching the 'skers play FL ST for the title when Tommie outplayed Ward running Ward's O half the night. We've been watching the games ever since, kind of a tradition now.

Second week leap is an Urban Myth.

What about the Husker leap after the TT game last year? That wasn't the second week and that was more then a leap. That was a vault.

I've gently been proceeding with the plan.

I've been using all manner of subtle suggestions and she is now tipping.

Things like "Well maybe I'll not go" after I explain how poor the seats are(they're super), it'll probably rain, it won't be a good game, maybe I won't go I've lost interest in the Huskers. She's tipping Luber and with the last little nudge your sitting next to me on the 40 yard line.

Posted by: rluben on September 6, 2010 11:14AM CST
Yeah, but it's a little different for running back to have a shoulder issue, he has to lower that shoulder and initiate contact with it while running full speed.

A DE is never going to hardly have to use his like a running back does.

It looked to me like that guy was holding him and gut under his armpit and when the O player took him to the ground pounded his fist or fingers into the soft spot of the pit while also driving Cameron's shoulder into the turf.

It looked like a dirty play to me, dude was holding him all game up until that happened.

Anyone who's ever had the nerve in their armpit tweaked knows it aint no fun, your arm can actually go dead for awhile if it's done right.

Posted by: rluben on September 6, 2010 11:16AM CST
Actually I was going to tell you gofor2 that I might be having my knee scoped the week before that and not sure I'll be wanting to crutch it all over the stadium.

I find out this week I think when it's going to be scheduled.

Like I said don't get couched for me man.

That's exactly what I saw too. I can't believe the refs didn't.

Posted by: 3&OUT on September 6, 2010 11:18AM CST
rluben, your right on both counts he was getting held and did get twisted and pancaked and it shouldn't affect him like Helu's injury last year. GBR

That "nerve" is a thing called the "brachial plexes." It's a combination of multiple nerves, like a tree trunk, about the size 20 french catheter.

Because of the complex structure of the muscles to the hand and fingers and the need for precise control it's a major network of nerves.

My first day of med school, in gross anatomy, we started on that area.

We butchered one side, thought we'd done the assignment and I went up to our professor for our team and announced " We had the armpit done, sir."

He looked at our work and me and said "First of all you hay seed, that's the axilla not the arm pit and your guys butchered it!"(We were in a hurry, there was a world series game on)

He said, if you don't do the other side right you bunch of yahoos are outa here.
We got the other side right, Jeez.

I could pull the old fan in the wheel chair maneuver.

I'll get a wheel chair from the U of W med center across the street. Push you through the gate with your ticket as your attending physician and park you on the sidelines.

Done it a few times.:)

Yeah, I'm listening to the broadcasters talk about how the officiating crew will allow no slack in the first couple games...and then watched WKU's o-line hold almost every play-- especially our DEs--and got called fror holding like once. I know, I know...whining...and it's isn't holding if you get away with it, but Sheesh! It did look like the officals were trying to equalize the trenches a bit.

Posted by: Gofor2 on September 6, 2010 11:49AM CST
The key though Lube,

You have to act like your in pain
and if you get excited, you can't jump up out of the wheel chair and lay a block, or mess with the players if a play ends up in our lap.

You can't jump up and get in a players face or wrestle around if there's some out of bounds skirmish.

That wouldn't look good on TV if a wheel chaired dude does that stuff. Security would probably give us the boot.

Did my peepers deceive me last night or did I really see a post from RedInBend a.k.a. Redinguam? If you read this, welcome back and hope everything is going well in your part of the world.

In response to Trashman's inquiry, riot police are being summoned here in Baton Rouge. The natives are past restless and the calls for scalps have reached a fever pitch. OC and the head Kahuna all better watch it. They will awaken to find "FOR SALE" signs sprouting in their front yards. With the talent we've got, there is no excuse.

Busiekcreek,

Didnt LSU just add another national championship in 2007?

Are you joking?

I think Ryan Perrilloux really screwed LSU over at QB, and you guys are still dealing with the aftermath. Les Miles is a good coach. Winning it all every year is hard. Patience, Tiger fans, patience!

Posted by: Trashman on September 6, 2010 12:27PM CST
Busie

This is what I figured.

Glad people are "seeing the light" on Miles down there....not a good coach IMO. Always felt he got a little lucky for his Okie St run.

It's been confirmed with the LSU slow demise....

The University of NE may get a little lighter in the pockets when LSU makes an inquiry however....

Finally got to see what had Bo so hacked off for all of fall camp. T-Mart can flat-out fly. The QB competition really was as close as they said. The difference was obviously T-Mart's speed. This is GOOD news for Nebraska fans. We have three high-quality, highly competitive, VERY capable QB's in place.

Look at the enormous amount of YOUTH that rotated into that game. Lots of true freshmen and redshirt freshmen, more than I can ever recall taking the field at once in a Nebraska game. Yes, we made some mistakes. Very young teams do. But think about how good these guys are going to be when they've shed the first-game jitters and had a chance to gel.

Loved how Helu battered his way into the endzone, and Burkhead was breaking ankles with his cuts.

Lavonte David, uh, WOW. I know Bo says he made a lot of mistakes, but, WOW. Dejon Gomes is a STUD.

Seven rushes for 127 yards and three TD's? Man, woman and child! This offense was Taylor-Made for T-Mart.

Cody Green and Zac Lee both looked great, Paul and Kinnie were solid, my man Will Henry had a nice reception (Go, Will!), Austin Jones got in the endzone....I'm happy.

Let's just take 'em one at a time, and see what happens. GO BIG RED!
